Make sure to have your rat poison and morphine ready, because we're diving into the psychedelic nightmarish wasteland that is 2003's Deloused in the Comatorium by progressive-rock band The Mars Volta - AKA the rise and fall of Cerpin Taxt. While Alex has been somewhat of a fan of them for over a decade, this is Austin's first foray into the bands music. We talk about the bands prior history as At the Drive-In, the songwriting duo of Cedric Zavala-Bixler and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the revolving door of musicians (including RHCP's Flea and John Frusciante), the incredible drumming by Jon Theodore, Rick Rubin and the importance of a good producer (where Alex accidentally credits Stanley Donwood instead of Nigel Godrich for Radiohead), and the albums unique mix of prog-rock, post-hardcore, psychedelic, and droning ambience. Outside of the topical discussion, we get into how busy Austin's life is getting with an upcoming wedding, house-hunting, and infatuation with emulating old SNES and gameboy games, plus the overall nothing-happening going ons of Alex's life at the moment (RIP). We're drinking Urban Artifact's berry-heavy fruited sour Audion for this one. Looks like we're doing The Last Samurai next. Want to reach us on social media? This week's guest is Willy Rodriguez. Willy is a Latin-Grammy award winning drummer and percussionist based in New York City. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Willy has been playing drums since he was thirteen and his list of associated acts is endless…including Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Mon Laferte, Domino Saints and more. After leaving Puerto Rico, he attended Berklee College of Music and began making a name for himself in the Boston music scene rather quickly, but he ultimately set up shop in New York City. His work with Omar eventually led to him being called to drum on the newest The Mars Volta record (which is an insane honor for any drummer), but Willy is a singular player. He extremely knowledgeable and well-plugged in to so many scenes and genres that you can't really describe him in any particular way; He's just Willy. Also, hit him up on his Instagram the next time you're in New York City and he'll point to the right places to go. Please enjoy my chat with THE willy Rodriguez about the 5 records that shaped him into the player he is today. Cheers! Willy Rodriguez is a Latin GRAMMY-winning drummer, percussionist and bandleader. He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and began playing drums at age thirteen. He received his musical start playing throughout Puerto Rico in rock and pop bands. When Willy was twenty-one he started working as the Musical Director and drummer for Latin American Idol's touring group. Following his experience at Idol, he was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in 2007. His reputation as a skilled musician spread quickly in the Boston area and he began playing extensively with musicians such as Jason Palmer and Andre Heyward. At Berklee, Willy studied with a host of famed teachers such as Terri-Lyne Carrington, Yoron Israel, Ralph Peterson and Greg Osby. In 2014, Willy graduated from New England Conservatory with a Master's degree in Jazz Drum Performance. At NEC, he studied with Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, Miguel Zenon, Jerry Bergonzi and Bob Moses, among others. He has performed alongside some of the premier musicians in jazz and Latin jazz including Jason Palmer, Papo Vasquez and Dave Liebman, with whom he has recorded and played with extensively. In addition to his work in jazz, he has performed and/or recorded with an extensive list of genre-spanning artists including Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Mon Laferte, Domino Saints, and more. In 2019, he won a Latin GRAMMY for his work on Mon Laferte's 'Norma'. Willy recorded the self-titled seventh album by The Mars Volta, released in 2022 after a ten-year hiatus.  In this episode, Willy talks about How he got into The Mars Volta's circle, and how his style fit the more intimate feel of the new record Wanting to make his own name as an artist, as opposed to becoming known as "so-and-so's drummer" His experience as an older student at Berklee Understanding the American pocket and shedding his "Puerto-Rican-ness" in pursuit of it How he got into jazz through metal and math rock

In 2001, at the peak of their success of "Relationship of Command", At The Drive-In announced their disbandment. What resulted were the formations of 2 bands way ahead of their times: Sparta (led by guitarist Jim Ward) and this week's featured act The Mars Volta. Consisting of the driving force that made AtDI great (Vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez) and a mixture of crazy math-rock guitar riffs, insane drum beats and passionate vocals, The Mars Volta would release only six albums in the 11 years the band had been together. Although there have been rumors of a possible reunion for a couple years, the respective members have remained busy with other projects since their disbandment in 2012 (including a "Drive-In" reunion featuring one more album). So until Cedric and Omar can get the Volta up and running again, I will have the absolutely daunting task of ranking their albums from worst (???) to best! Released digitally on July 1st 2014 (november 10th 2014 physically) Antemasque caused a minor ripple for fans of At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta, which led Antemasque to play their debut London show at the Electric Ballroom, a show which Remfry attended and recalls here via a long lost Team Rock review.

Steve Cooper talks with bassist Juan Alderete. Juan met renowned guitarist Paul Gilbert in 1985 and the two started the ground-breaking metal outfit, Racer X. The band released two studio albums, both of which showcased the band’s incredible speed, dexterity and skill in what many have dubbed “shred metal.”  After releasing couple of live records,  the members of Racer X went their separate ways in 1988, but reformed eleven years later, recording Technical Difficulties and touring throughout Japan where the album reached gold status. Post-Racer X,he formed another Los-Angeles-based rock band, The Scream, which produced two albums then moved onto Pet. In 2003, he was approached in 2003 by Omar Rodriguez Lopez of The Mars Volta to be the touring basist for the run of the band’s debut album, De-Loused in the Comatorium.  After a successful, year-long tour, he became a permanent member of the group and went on to record The Mars Volta’s landmark second album, Frances the Mute (Universal).  It was this album that inspired Bass Player Magazine’s editors to put him on the cover of their March, 2005 issue. In addition to his work with The Mars Volta, he frequently contributed to Rodriguez Lopez’s countless solo releases and toured extensively with the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group.

FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP28. Sinkane / On-Line Meia. 10.06.12Originally this podcast was supposed to highlight the work of Sinkane but somewhere along the line my Attention Deficit Disorder got the best of me and I began to think and write about all the amazing music I have downloaded in the past few years. I started this podcast to highlight bands that my listeners haven’t heard of yet and hopefully expose them to genres that they may not have known they could like, while at the same time keeping my production chops fresh. Along the way I have discovered some amazing talent that I wouldn’t have even known about without this online underground music society and to me that is awesome.I would like to start interviewing underground bands that have at least one album out, and are willing to sit on the phone with me and discuss their craft, and what it feels like to do what they do. If that sounds like fun to you then hit me up on FaceBook/WesleyNyle or find me on Twitter/WesleyNyle. I would love to listen to your work, do some research and call you up or meet you some place in the Dallas area and talk shop.So with that said here’s the podcast:Without the internet, many bands that are currently the focus of the independent music scene would otherwise be lost in obscurity. The rabbit hole of current indie rock trends continues to go deeper with bands like Yeasayer as a prime example: a group originating in Brooklyn nearly six years ago, and in some aspects sharing the traditional tale of touring and peddling vinyl singles, to rise form the primordial ooze that is indie rock obscurity. But also gaining traction from online publications and being boasted as the “Most Blogged About Band” in 2010. Let’s hear the Doors, Janice Joplin, or Queen brag about that. It’s true that the majority of entertainers are jumping on the online band wagon. And why not? Aside from the monetary aspect of it, producing and publishing your own music or media, is less mess altogether, no agents, no labels, no censorship, no contracts, and with home studios becoming more and more reasonable to build and operate. Bands essentially have all the time you need without paying a studio to play. Radiohead’s last two self-releases, In Rainbows, and The King Of Limbs are shining examples. Doing extremely well as digital downloads that were presented initially as a “Pay What You Think It’s Worth” experiment. Even comedian and writer Louis C.K. made an impact, with his self-releases that he made available only on his website for the ridiculously low price of five dollars, knowing that the media could easily be pirated, but trusting his fans to pay for the easier experience of simply downloading the content directly from his website.Ahmed Gallab, a relatively obscure, yet insanely talented multi-instrumentalist, who has toured with Caribou, Of Montreal, and now has landed a solid role as Yeasayer’s multi-instrumentalist. Is following in the footsteps of many other successful, and established musicians; like Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Marz Volta, in the vein of branching out into his own solo project, under the name Sinkane.Really, Gallab has been creating music on his own for several years. It’s only now through the miracle of sites like SoundCould, ReverbNation, and BandCamp that artists are able to take risks, and show off their work with less capital, green lighting new music attics like myself to discover and share what would normally only be a local treat. This is helping smaller artists make a living with their music, and for artist like Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, generate revenue for causes in a more creative way than selling an autographed bass. Example being Flea’s solo album Helen Burns: a solo, self-released, pay what you think it’s worth album, that’s funds benefit the Silver Lake Conservatory of Music. The online liner notes warn, or boast that this is not a Red Hot Chili Peppers album, and stands on its own merits with spaced out experimental jazz, giving this newish idea of posting your own self-produced media some serious street cred.Even though some of Sinkane’s work is out on the internet for our enjoyment his entire body of work can’t be found entirely in digital format. A shrewd business decision, and yet still an artsy move. His entire discography consists of 2 EP and 3 LP’s that majoritively can only be purchased on vinyl through his site. Since early this year this native Sudanian has been teasing Bloggers with talk of a new LP titled Mars, but right now it looks like the single “Jeeper Creeper” on his SoundCloud is the only proof of new material. This is Sinkane, an artist that you wouldn’t have heard of without the online music community.Tracks Herd On This Podcast: (intro background) Sinkane – Color Voice Yeasayer – Blue Paper Yeasayer - Longevity Radiohead – Morning Mr. Magpie Sinkane – Apache Beat Fela – 333 Sinkane – Jeeper Creeper

A warm welcome to James Elphick, aka Mys-Elf, art director and organiser of London's heady Guerilla Zoo events, and sonic conjurer behind the sixth instalment of Spannered's Oddcast series.   Entitled A Room With a View, Oddcast #6 slides, drifts, hops and chops between sublime electronica, infectious folk-rock, Latin rhythms, crackly cinematic samples and queasy instrumental hip hop; we've had it on heavy rotation since he sent it in to us (we particularly recommend it for long train journeys across the UK, accompanied by a four pack of Guinness).
