Naturally, every recording Eddie Van Halen ever played on has been pored over by legions of guitar players of all styles. It might seem funny, then, to consider EVH solos that might require more attention. But your 100 Guitarists hosts have their picks of solos that they feel merit a little discussion. Some of these are deep cuts—get ready for some instrumental bonus tracks and Van Halen III mentions—and some are among the biggest radio hits of their time. Just because their hits, though, doesn't mean we don't have more to add to the conversation. We can't cover everything EVH—Jason has already tried while producing the Runnin' With the Dweezil podcuast. But we cover as much as we can in our longest episode yet. And in the second installment of our current listening segment, we're talking about new-ish music from Oz Noy and Bill Orcutt.Supported by ToneSpeak: https://www.tonespeak.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. He's been the rim-batterer of choice for some of the greatest contemporary purveyors of "jazz" (Joe McPhee, Paul Flaherty, Mette Rasmussen, Zoh Amba) and "rock" (Sir Richard Bishop, Bill Orcutt, Jim O'Rourke), as well as artists beyond categorization (Björk for her Volta album and world tour, Michael Flower, Okkyung Lee). We're back after a four month hiatus to bring you our list of the top 100 albums of 2023. Is it, at bare minimum, a month and a half late? Yes. By "we" do we mean "just Brad because Sean wouldn't want any part of this nonsense"? Yes again. But whatever, we're doing it anyway. It has been another great year for music, which at this point should not be shocking. We've got incredible team-ups galore, big names from the past making a mark in the present, new names bursting on to the scene, everything and the kitchen sink albums, spoken word weirdness, hip-hop standard bearers still innovating, gloopy synths, the sounds of a haunted house, and above all else, a lot of very aggressive, noisy music. It was a hell of a year. So... enjoy? (We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming... eventually. Probably soon. We are still reeling from the Detroit Lions losing the NFC Championship game, so it might be a while) Artists Discussed (In Alphabetical Order): 2FAC, Aaron Dilloway, Aho Ssan, Altin Gun, Ana Frango Elétrico, Armand Hammer, Bandler Ching, BBBBBBB, Bill Orcutt, Billy Woods & Kenny Segal, Bounaly, Brass Riot, Bully, Caterina Barbieri, Charif Megarbane, Colin Stetson, Dead Times, Deena Abdelwahed, Disclosure, Divide and Dissolve, DJ Finale, DJ Girl, DJ Smiley Bobby, EABS & Jaubi, El Michels Affair & Black Thought, Ellen Arkbro, Embarker, Emergency Group, Euglossine, Fever Ray, Fire Toolz, Forest Swords, Gazelle Twin, Gezan & Million Wish Collective, Great Falls, Guilty Simpson & Uncommon NASA, Hitech, Hourloupe, Hyphyskazerbox, ICECOLDBISHOP, Jana Winderen, Janelle Monáe, Jlin, JPEGmafia & Danny Brown, Judgitzu, Karen y los Remedios, Katarsi, KEN Mode, Kool Keith & Real Bad Man, Kouns and Weaver, Larry Wish, Lauren Bousfield, Loraine James, Lost Girls, Lunch Money Life, Madlib, Meyhem Lauren, & DJ Muggs, Mallwalker, Marina Herlop, Matmos, MC Yallah, Mendoza Hoff Revels, MIKE, Mike Nigro, Model/Actriz, Mukqs, M-Ziq, Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy, Neupink, Novatron, Nuovo Testamento, Oozing Wound, OrangeTone, Organized Cream, Ortopedia Tecnica, Osees, Paavoharju, Physique, PoiL/Ueda, Private Lives, RP Boo, Screaming Females, Shit And Shine, Sightless Pit, Silver Apples & Makoto Kawabata, Sunik Kim, Sweeping Promises, TALSounds, Tee Vee Repairman, Teeth of the Sea, That Mexican OT, The Gate, The HIRS Collective, Tim Hecker, Tinashe, Tzusing, Victoria Monet, Vorsicht Kinder, Wound Man, Zoh Amba/Chris Corsano/Bill Orcutt --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social

Guitarist Bill Orcutt has gone from noise artist to an iconoclastic solo guitarist who redefined his own relationship with the instrument, deconstructs American standards, and now composes music for larger groups. In this episode, he discusses how music by Jimi Hendrix, Judy Garland, and Joseph Spence shaped his course. Essential Tremors is produced by Matt Byars and Lee Gardner and distributed by Your Public Studios.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's our yearly tradition here at Queen Venerator as we're counting down our Top 100 Albums of 2022. To say that this was a good year in music would be a massive understatement. This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more. On today's episode, I talk to musician Bill Orcutt. Originally from Miami, Florida, Bill made films and played music in various groups before co-founding the noise rock group Harry Pussy in the early '90s with his then-wife Adris Hoyos. After releasing a number of albums and EPs on labels like Siltbreeze, the group broke up and Bill moved to San Francisco to focus on filmmaking and other endeavors. In 2009, he began making music publicly again, and in the last 13 years, has produced a number of incredible experimental albums. His latest, Music for Four Guitars, was just released back in September, and it's wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

This week's guest Joe Tunis (Carbon Records, Pengo) once again guides us into the world of post-rock, with Chicago-by-way-of-Kentucky band Gastr del Sol and their 1994 Drag City release 'Crookt, Crackt, or Fly'. Like many of their adjacent bands - Slint, Tortoise, Bastro...etc - the music on this mysterious record is often hard to define. It's a strange, evocative amalgamation of unconventional guitar virtuosity, subtle tape-work and occasional forays into full-on math rock that's definitely not for the timid. Songs featured in this episode: Wedding in the Park - Gastr del Sol; Queasy Stream - Pengo; Sun God - Squirrel Bait; Breadcrumb Trail - Slint; Shoot Me A Deer - Bastro; A Watery Kentucky - Gastr del Sol; Rain On Tin - Sonic Youth; History and Repetition - Bill Orcutt; Four Violins (excerpt) - Tony Conrad; Sunflower River Blues - John Fahey; Wedding in the Park, Work From Smoke - Gastr del Sol; Glass Museum - Tortoise; Parenthetically - Gastr del Sol; Wird - Codeine; Every Five Miles - Gastr del Sol; Boilermaker - The Jesus Lizard; Thos. Guitarist and composer Bill Orcutt has always worked on the fringes of music: He's crafted noisy punk as a guitarist in Harry Pussy, served raw blues-inspired acoustic music as a solo artist, and has even composed computer music. With his new album, 'Music for Four Guitars,' he creates something completely different: 14 compositions for a guitar quartet that, as of now, doesn't really exist. Between Bill's mesmerizing, looped playing (on what turns out to be a Telecaster with two strings removed) and his DIY recording technique (Logic with a "pawnshop" amp plug-in), it's like nothing else you've ever heard. It harkens to the classic sounds of early Minimalism, but with an entirely new twist. On the podcast, Bill sheds light on this beguiling record, talks to us about his recording process, and explains why he used only the bridge pickup for these compositions. He also describes how he re-created Randy Newman's 'Sail Away' album cover photo and hints at when 'Music for Four Guitars' will actually be played by four guitarists (himself being one of them). Buy this album on Bandcamp and you'll get an 84-page PDF score of these compositions. Who knows? You and three friends may be the first to play them in their entirety. https://billorcutt.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-four-guitars This Fretboard Journal Podcast is sponsored by Peghead Nation (use the promo code FRETBOARD and get your first month free or $20 off any annual subscription); Izotope (use the coupon code FRET10 to save 10% off their plug-ins); Retrofret Vintage Guitars; Izotope (use the discount code FRET10 to save 10% off your Izotope purchase); and Calton Cases. Bill Orcutt of Harry Pussy joins us today for a great historical discussion on a different branch of noise. In the 90s along with bands like To Live and Shave in LA and Laundry Room Squelchers, Harry Pussy tore apart all semblance of good taste and set proper foundations ablaze. Miami in the '90s was a wild place and Orcutt was right in the middle. We also get into his return to sound and his current work. What was music?

Thanks to much-celebrated guitarist Bill Orcutt, That Record Got Me High has now driven into the proverbial Everglades and begun wading around, in the dark. The alligators are sure to take notice, and who can blame them? Daring to approach 17-now-18-year-old wunderkind Billie Eilish, and her pop masterpiece, as 55+ dads, is bound to elicit some stink eye. We did it though, didn't we? Welcome to the September edition of our monthly Transmissions podcast, our series of conversations with musicians and artists about why—and how—their art exists. On this episode, Aquarium Drunkard founder Justin Gage sits down at AD HQ with Devendra Banhart to spin selections and discuss his new album, Ma. Then, Jason P. Woodbury joins Throwing Muses founder, solo artist, and writer Kristin Hersh backstage to discuss future sounds from Throwing Muses and Don’t Suck, Don’t Die, her book about her friend, the departed Vic Chesnutt. And to close out, Jason rings up Bill Orcutt, whose latest release, the sparse electric guitar noir, Odds Against Tomorrow, sees release October 11th.

For the past several decades, guitarist Bill Orcutt has been on a singular musical journey that started in Miami, FL and has led him all over the world. On a recent visit to New York, he stopped by the 5049 Chihuahua Sanctuary for a talk about his work, the Bay Area, growing up in Florida, picking up and putting down the guitar and a whole lot more. A great talk with a completely unique musician. Dig.
