Special Episode #1: The GRIP Program

Feeling Good Podcast | TEAM-CBT - The New Mood Therapy

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2024 70:16

Rhonda Describes the GRIP Program and Interviews GRIP Graduate, Shakur Ross The Guiding Rage Into Power (GRIP) Training Institute serves incarcerated men and women in California.  Their mission is to create personal and systemic change to turn violence and suffering into opportunities for learning and healing. I (Rhonda) was introduced to the GRIP program when two of my dearest friends, Steve Zimmerman and Vicki Peet, invited me to a yearly celebration of the GRIP Training institute.  I was blown away by who I met and what I learned that I wanted to share it with the Feeling Good Podcast listeners.  Thank you, David, for letting me deviate from our typical subjects. The GRIP program is a different subject for the Feeling Good Podcast, because it is not about TEAM-CBT.  What the GRIP Program and TEAM-CBT have in common is that they are both evidence-based programs that incorporate CBT theory and methods into their treatment methodology.  But the main thing they have in common is that people who engage in these two therapies experience profound, enlightening changes in their lives. From their program: “The GRIP program is an evidence-based methodology developed over 25 years of work with 1000's of incarcerated people and many victim/survivors. Rooted in Restorative Justice principles, the program's trauma informed model integrates cutting-edge neuroscience research.  Students engage in a yearlong, in-depth journey to comprehend the origins of their violence and develop skills to track and manage strong impulses rather than acting out in harmful ways.  They transform destructive beliefs and behaviors into an attitude of emotional intelligence that prevents revictimization.” The GRIP Training Institute was started in 2011.  As of October 2020, nine years after running its first group, 915 students have graduated.  Of the 915 graduates, 369 were released from prison.  Only 1 graduate in nine years returned to prison, which is a recidivism rate of 0.3%, which is very impressive considering the recidivism rate for California is between 44-46%.  Many, if not all of the graduates, say that GRIP saved their lives.  Something many people who have benefitted from TEAM-CBT echo. At the GRIP celebration, I was standing in line waiting for the buffet.  A man got in line behind me.  It was confusing where the line ended, which was not directly behind me. In another circumstance I might have mentioned to him that the line ended somewhere else, but he was kind of scary looking, big, buff with obvious prison tattoos on his neck so I didn't say anything.  But the line moved slowly and I was curious so I asked him what his connection to GRIP was.  He told me he was a graduate of the program and then politely asked me the same question. It has been my experience that often people love to talk about themselves more than they are interested in other people so I was immediately impressed that he was as interested in me as I was in him.  When I told him I was a therapist, he asked me what kind of therapy I practiced.  I explained TEAM-CBT, and he was super interested! He told me he loved CBT, and had learned a lot about himself through that kind of therapy because GRIP incorporated it in their program.  I asked him about his experience in GRIP and his tough exterior transformed right in front of me as he talked about how GRIP saved his life. I talked to several other men (so far only men have graduated from the GRIP program because the services have only recently been brought to a women's prison), and had the same experience.  I met our guest on this podcast, Shakur Ross, who kindly agreed to share his journey of transformation with us. GRIP graduates continue to do the work and live as Peacemakers.  Shakur works for GRIP and returns to San Quentin and other prisons to provide the same lessons that he received. The podcast starts with an interview with Kim Moore, the Executive Director of the GRIP Training Institute, who explains some of the key concepts of the program. Thanks for listening today! Rhonda

Drop Nineteens - "A Hitch" a 2023 single on Wharf Cat Records It's been 30 years, but Boston shoegazers Drop Nineteens returned last week with their long-awaited third full-length, Hard Light. The album features the band's original line-up of Greg Ackell, Steve Zimmerman, Paula Kelley, Motohiro Yasue, with drummer Pete Koeplin (who played on the band's second album, National Coma). Co-founder Ackell describes the new album as "the band's proverbial follow up to [their 1992 debut] Delaware, a modern Drop Nineteens record that is completely singular in its sound and vision." In fact, today's Song of the Day is the song that got the reunion rolling. “'A Hitch,' was the first song the band wrote when they got back together,” Ackell explains in a press release. “It set the tone for the rest of the album, for what a new Drop Nineteens song could sound like.” Read the full story at KEXP.org  Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Steve walks us through his journey in a restaurant family, where he started in the kitchen washing dishes at the age of 15. As he works through the ranks, he finds himself being called in to his Reserve status and cooking for the 500 - 600 airmen (breakfast and lunch each day). When relieved of his duty, he went back into the family business and worked his way to the very top at a point of having over 35 restaurants, 20 of them being their signature Zimm's. You will hear how Steve makes a radical decision to leave the family business and reinvent himself to be the largest premiere restaurant business broker and realtor. Restaurant Realty Company is the largest California restaurant brokerage specializing in sales, acquisitions and leasing of restaurants, bars, nightclubs and related commercial buildings with local representation throughout Southern and Northern California including the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Central Coast, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego markets. The conversation delves into the hardships of owning a restaurant, the pitfalls of buying and selling, and an interesting look at the near future of restaurants. On today's show, I interview Mary Hiland with Hiland Consulting.  Mary has been involved with nonprofit organizations for more than 40 years.  She went from volunteer to staff to executive director.  Mary led two mergers of her nonprofit with 530 staff and has worked with budgets ranging from $100,000-$26 million. Mary is now a consultant and coach for nonprofit leaders and their boards.   What are some of the challenges executive directors face with their boards? Nonprofits do not orient board members.  In a recent survey, 75% of the board members said in terms of understanding governing, they really didn't get oriented into what that meant.  The challenge with that is that the executive director is not in a place to teach the board what their roles and responsibilities are.  Board members need to understand the why of what they are there to do and why they are so important to the nonprofit they serve.  Board recruitment is another area where there are a lot of challenges – finding the people you need and want.  And of course, board diversity is also a challenge.   What are the keys to building a powerful executive to board member relationship? Capacity – good executive directors have onboarded/oriented board members. Connection – the relationships between the executive director and the board members, the relationships among the board members, and all of those players and their relationships with the external world. Culture – the successful board (and nonprofits) have a culture of abundance. Mindset is about the positive things, so they don't have negative beliefs holding them back.    When you come across boards that are struggling, what do you see that's not working? The relationship between the board chair and the executive director is so important.  In a recent study, when board chairs were asked what they felt qualified them to be the board chair, 51% of them answered nothing.  There was nothing that prepared them to be the board chair.  The leadership on the board determines the success of the board; the leadership/recruitment of the board chair and it's other members must be nurtured.  If the executive is the most important leader in the nonprofit, then the board chair is the second – he or she can stall the board for their entire term.  This leads back to the initial orientation of the board chair – did they know their role and responsibility? It is your job as the staff to make that volunteer look really good and shine.     You don't have to have an entire board that interested in fundraising.  That's when you start creating committees made up of members who are interested in fundraising, or other areas like mission, advocacy, etc.  All of this should be driven by your strategic goals – where you are going, what you are trying to accomplish, and who are the champions you need.    Do you have a resource for people looking for board development? I recommend people to look at podcasts because they are free and there is a lot of good advice out there.  I also recommend two books:  Group Alchemy:  The Six Elements of Highly Successful Collaboration by Deborah Pruitt, which is very practical and discusses how to have an effective work group; and Nonprofit Sustainability  by Jeanne Bell, Jan Masaoka, and Steve Zimmerman has a model for having conversations about how you make decisions about money with your mission in mind and do it in a way that really works.    What does fundraising freedom mean to you? I think it means empowerment, feeling like I can make a contribution personally and I can help others make a contribution.  I am empowered to both invest in and attract investment in the causes that I care about because this is how we connect with each other and have meaning in our own lives.   Connect with Mary Hiland at mary@hilandconsulting.org or hilandconsulting.org.  You can also find her podcast, Inspired Nonprofit Leadership, on iTunes.   For more information about Mary Valloni, visit maryvalloni.com and to download our free Fundraising Freedom Roadmap, go to maryvalloni.com/roadmap.   Interested in joining the Nonprofit Executive Club?  Check out nonprofitexecutiveclub.com

This is segment 1 of 2 from what has now become a bit of a tradition for us. This is our 3rd Record Store Day Podcast, and the second year in a row we've done it from Jupiter Records in Woodbury Heights NJ. Record Store Day falls right at the end of the Hippie High Holidaze of Bicycle Day, 4/20, the anniversary of Prince's death and Earth Day. Seeing as how Dogfish Head is the official beer of Record Store Day, we had Ryan Horner from Dogfish sit in with some beautiful liquid. The theme of this one was "Opening The Vaults." We all brought beers from the deep dark recesses of our collections and opened them on the show. Most of the beers that were opened were older than our children. Rob opens a VERY sour Stone Enjoy After, Jay Rose breaks down how to drink a sour beer, Steve Zimmerman from Jupiter shares some of the more ridiculous things he finds in record collections, and Richard enjoys an 11 year old 120 IPA. Chuck Garrity from Death Of A Fox Brewing in Clarksboro NJ hangs for a bit to explain how his brewery is a coffee house and his coffee house is a brewery. Very cool stuff. Open a beer from your vault and enjoy the ride!
