一般被认为早期的 Jazz Rap 歌曲是 “Talkin' All That Jazz” , 发行于 1988 年,来自纽约的 Stetsasonic 组合为了回击 James Mutume (Funk 乐队 Mutume 主创)对 Hip-Hop 音乐形式的的批评,旋律采样了 Lonnie Liston Smith “Expansions”;纽约组合 Gang Starr 1989 年首作 "No More Mr.Nice Guy” 中就有几首采样爵士乐的歌曲,这促使了导演 Spike Lee 邀请 DJ Premier 为他 1990 年的电影 “Mo Better Blues” 制作了电影歌曲“Jazz Thing”,这首歌对爵士大家们的致敬使它成为了 Jazz Rap 的经典代表;Gang Starr 的前三张可以被认为是 Jazz Rap,从 1994 的 “Hard to Earn”开始更加硬核;Gang Starr 成员之一 Guru 的 Jazzmatazz 系列,其中发表于 1993 年的 Vol.1 中不仅有当时拥抱融合爵士乐的前辈,也有同辈的跨界爵士乐手和 rapper;纽约集体 Native Tongue 在采样手法上跳出了以往 James Brown 的范围,重要组合 A Tribe Called Quest 从 1990 年发表首张专辑开始就成了 Jazz Rap 高水准的代表,1991 年的 “Low End Theory” 奠定了 90s 东岸说唱的美学,1993 年的 “Midnight Marauders” 更是在制作层面达到新的高度;推荐纪录片 “Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travel of A Tribe Called Quest” (2011)1992 年 Pete Rock 和 C.L. Smooth 的 “Mecca and the Soul Brothers” 是超越时代的制作水平,Pete Rock 制作风格的独特性;以局外人姿态进入 Jazz Rap 场景的组合 Digable Planets 两张专辑都是我们的爱,1993 年的 “Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space” 明显体现出 Butterfly 特立独行的抽象哲思和采样上的想法,1994 年的 “Blowout Comb” 主题更多围绕黑人民族主义主张;来自费城乐队形式的 The Roots 的 “Organix”(1993)和 “Do You Want More?!!!??! Dream Warriors “And Now the Legacy Begins” (1991) , Brand New Heavies “Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol.1” (1992) , 英国 Us3,法国 MC Soolar, Soon E MC,制作人 Jimmy Jay;02. Episode Playlist:A Tribe Called Quest - “Scenario”Stetsasonic - “Talkin' All That Jazz”Gang Starr - “Jazz Thing”Gang Starr - “The Place We Dwell”Guru - “Loungin'" ft. Nasheet Waits, drummer and music educator, is a New York native. His interest in playing the drums was encouraged by his father, legendary percussionist, Frederick Waits, who played with such legendary artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sonny Rollins, Lee Morgan, Max Roach, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, and countless others. While attending Long Island University, Nasheet studied privately with renowned percussionist Michael Carvin. Carvin's tutelage provided a vast foundation upon which Waits added influences from his father, as well as mentor Max Roach and percussionist Fred King. It was Max that first gave Nasheet's formidable talent international spotlight, hiring him as a member of the famed percussion ensemble M'BOOM. One highlight of Nasheet's tenure with M'BOOM was the live concert performance of M'BOOM with special guests Tony Williams and Ginger Baker. Nasheet's recording and performing discography is a veritable who's who in Jazz. Waits has boasted stints with jazz notables Antonio Hart, Jackie McLean, Wadada Leo Smith, Dave Douglas, Mark Turner, Bunky Green, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddie Gomez, Steve Coleman, The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Greg Osby, Wallace Roney, Jacky Terrason, and The Mingus Big Band. Waits has recorded and toured extensively in Africa, Europe, Japan, Canada, South America and the United States. In this episode, Nasheet talks about: Learning from Christian McBride's "played with everybody" experience, and high level consistency as a performer The early influence of his father, musically and culturally How friends and colleague of his father like like Michael Carvin and Max Roach stepped in to mentor him after his father died Lessons from Carvin His experience attending an HBCU in Atlanta

I had the pleasure to sit down and dialogue with one of today's top innovators in music, Damion Reid. In this episode we discuss his early influences on the drums, one of which was learning and being mentored by legendary Jazz drummer, Billy Higgins. Damion discusses how he developed his sense of value for the elders, and a deep respect for history and the ancestors. We talk about how he came to know Robert Glasper and was a big part of Glasper's early trios which brought him a grammy nomination for the 2015 album "Covered." We discuss his most recent project with the group Selebeyone, which includes alto saxophonists Steve Lehman and Maciek Lasserre, MC's HPrizm and Gaston Bandimic with Damion Reid on drums. Selebeyone's latest album "Xaybu" is available now on all platforms. Lastly we take a deep dive into Hip-Hop and some of his favorite MC's and producers.Damion Reid is from West Covina, California a city east of Los Angeles. He attended New England Conservatory of Music and The New School in NYC. He has toured and performed alongside Greg Osby, Terence Blanchard, Steve Coleman, Robert Hurst, Reggie Workman, Jason Moran, Ravi Coltrane, Lauryn Hill and many others.

"Wights Waits For Weights" Steve Coleman Group Motherland Pulse (JMT, 1985) Steve Coleman, Geri Allen, Lonnie Plaxico, Marvin "Smitty" Smith. Vocalist and Composer Tammy Scheffer visited On The Scene SF/O in Berkeley, CA. One of the foremost creative voices on New York City’s vibrant jazz scene, Scheffer is an increasingly difficult musician to classify. She has found equal cohorts in modern jazz, progressive rock, acoustic music, and solo, duo, or trio vocals and looping projects. Born in Belgium and raised in Israel, she studied music at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music before moving across the globe to attend the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts. The Tammy Scheffer Sextet’s 2010 recording, ‘Wake Up, Fall Asleep’ was selected directly by renowned saxophonist Greg Osby for release on his Inner Circle Music label. She also has a healthy list of work available for viewing on YouTube ranging from VideoSongs with Israeli Prog Rock Keyboardist, Eyal Amir and Project RnL to her own solo and ensemble projects. Most recently she has released an exciting and innovative EP with the jazz and rock driven trio, Morning Bound, comprised of Tammy on vocals and loops, Panagiotis Andreou, Bass and Vocals, and Ronen Itzek, on Drums. Jeff “Tain” Watts (http://tainish.com) is an acclaimed jazz musician, drummer and composer based in Easton, Pennsylvania. With 5 GRAMMY awards on his resume, Jeff has had a lengthy recording career as a sideman to many prominent jazz artists, including both Wynton and Branford Marsalis. His compositional skills now command equal attention. Jeff initially majored in classical percussion at Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University, where he was primarily a timpanist, followed by enrollment at the Berklee School of Music. Jeff joined the Wynton Marsalis Quartet in 1981 and proceeded to win three Grammy Awards with the ensemble: Black Codes From The Underground, J Mood and Marsalis Standard Time. Watts left Wynton Marsalis in 1988. After working with George Benson, Harry Connick. Jr. and McCoy Tyner, he joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet in 1989, winning Grammys for I Heard You Twice the First Time and Contemporary Jazz. In the film and television industry Jeff has appeared as both a musician on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and as an actor, Rhythm Jones in Spike Lee’s “Mo Better Blues”. Jeff joined Kenny Garrett’s band after returning to New York in 1995 and continued to record and tour with Branford Marsalis as well as Danilo Perez, Michael Brecker, Betty Carter, Kenny Kirkland, Courtney Pine, Geri Allen, Alice Coltrane, Greg Osby, McCoy Tyner, Steve Coleman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Harry Connick Jr, and Ravi Coltrane. Jeff now leads his own band, and records his own compositions on his own record label, Dark Key Music. (http://myiesstore.com/darkkeymusic/) Along with explosive power, blinding speed and mastery of complex rhythms and time signatures, Jeff’s style is at once elegant, composed, and yet very gritty at the same time. His latest recording, “Blue, Vol. 1” (http://myiesstore.com/darkkeymusic/product/blue-vol-1-cd/) is available now and receiving widespread critical acclaim.
Known for his tenure in the early 2000’s with noted saxophonist and composer Greg Osby, pianist Aaron Parks and his ongoing association with rising star saxophonist Logan Richardson, drummer and composer Tommy Crane’s approach is quick-witted and adaptable but singularly unique. By Lesley Mahoney March 10, 2014 In 2005, professor Bill Banfield launched a weekly series at Bob the Chef's (now Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen) in Boston's South End, featuring alumni, student, and faculty jazz musicians. Their collaboration created a new kind of cross-generational sound that fused jazz, soul, and funk while fostering an environment of mentorship. That marked the birth of the group, the Jazz Urbane, and the seeds for an album. Banfield, the founder and director of Berklee's Africana Studies Program, combined his compositions with younger voices for what he calls a "contemporary urban feel." The result: the group's recently released debut album, Playing with Other People's Heads, produced by Banfield's own mentor, the late George Duke, and featuring professor and alumna Terri Lyne Carrington and such alumni as Christian Scott, Alex Han, Grace Kelly, and Greg Osby. In this episode of Inside Berklee, Banfield talks about the group's beginnings and evolution, the importance of being real and sustainable as a musician, and mentorship. The Jazz Urbane will hold a CD release party on Wednesday, March 12 at Scullers Jazz Club with special guest Tia Fuller. Producer: Lesley Mahoney Engineer: Ryan Walsh Recorded at the BIRN Studios

Hear some sax players leading the way on this edition of New Sounds, including new music from sax player Tamar Osborn and her London-based Afro-Eastern-space-jazz band, Collocutor. Listen to their dreamy Turkish & Middle Eastern percussion meets Sun Ra jazz with electronics. Then, there's lyrical and swinging new music from sax & clarinet wizard/composer Ken Thomson and his outfit Slow/Fast. There's also the brand new recording of the "Terminals" concertos by drummer/composer Bobby Previte for percussion ensemble and soloists, his "Terminal 2" for saxman Greg Osby. The series of works was inspired by the schematic-like terminal maps that Previte has noticed in airports around the world. The recording also features So Percussion.
