POPULARITY
On this week's episode, I'm joined by filmmaker Jim Hickcox (Slow Creep, Soft Matter), who brings us the greatest zombie/rock film of all time, WILD ZERO, starring Guitar Wolf!!! We discuss the Japanese garage rock scene and Guitar Wolf's stature within it, what is Jet Rock N' Roll, how Guitar Wolf made the loudest record ever recorded, Bass Wolf & Drum Wolf's non-stop hair combing in this movie, Guitar Wolf's pro-Trans stance in the film, going to video stores rather than record stores while on tour, how the film's visual style predates Shaun Of The Dead, fast vs. slow zombies, how the concert footage of Guitar Wolf in the movie is incredible, the choice of killing the best characters early in a film, how the film has a surprisingly enormous heart, squibs & head explosions, the Aerosmith arcade game, filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki, Jim's dance sequence at the end of his film, the difficulties of recommending horror films to others, the unfilled plot to Wild Zero 2 and I go through an utter transformation during the recording of this episode. So come scream “Love Is Love” into a flaming microphone while lightning strikes the stage on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!JIM HICKCOX:www.jimhickcox.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. In this episode of 'Seeing Them Live,' Charles explores the multifaceted career of Ken Reid, a Boston-based comedian, former punk band member, and podcast host. Ken reflects on his diverse experiences, from his early days in the 90s punk band '30 Seconds Over Tokyo' to his extensive comedy career, which includes two comedy albums and a successful podcast 'TV Guidance Counselor.'He humorously shares early concert anecdotes, including winning tickets through radio contests and memorable shows like the Aerosmith concert and a unique collaboration between David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails. The discussion reveals Ken's passion for live performances and his impact on the entertainment industry over two decades, underscoring his transition from music to comedy and podcasting. Prompted by a story Charles shares where Michael Stipe asked Charles for his Batman shirt after an REM show, Ken and Charles do a deep dive into the portrayal of Joker by Cesar Romero in the original Batman series. They explore Romero's unique take on the character, the impact it had on the show's success, and how it influenced perceptions of the Joker in pop culture. The episode also dives into remarkable concert stories, such as The Descendants' comeback tour and intense punk shows at Boston's Rathskeller, portrayed through vivid recollections of chaotic and energetic performances. Additionally, the hosts and Ken discuss the evolving concert culture, contrasting the violent punk shows of the past with today's more positive festival atmosphere. This engaging narrative captures the spirit of live music and the raw energy of punk rock, while showcasing Ken Reid's journey from punk singer to a successful comedian and podcast host with over 700 episodes of 'TV Guidance Counselor.' Since the dawn of civilisation, rock'n'roll has been featured in films. Many talking heads, in documentaries featured once upon-a-time on the BBC, have spoken about the groin-and-brain-fireworks set off by seeing Willy Hailey and his Comets on the silver screen. Elsewhere, Elvis flooded cinemas with his cinematic gyros. Even Little Richard stood on a piano in one, and in doing so, stood above everyone. Ever. The real and true kueen (sic). Anyway, I digress. This week, we look at the efforts of bands to make films, themselves. Or at least, be heavily featured in them. In doing so, we look at Guitar Wolf, the Beedles, Weird Al, Floyd's Pink Pants and still more. We explore how these two things are inexplicably linked – rock'n'roll and dramatic movies, and reach surprising conclusions. And Sam is back from spurlunking. ### Riffs of the week #### Dr Sam's Riff - Thumpasaurus - Struttin' (0:10) #### Andrew's Riff - Putrid Defecation - Impending Anal Leakage (0:36) ### Dr Sam's track choices 1. Recorded via webcam a couple of weeks ago, we talk about how he got started, what the future holds for his band, and we get really deep talking about the current state of things and how things may look on the other side, as well as our hopes and worries. Corey and Maddy are trapped in a demented radio DJ's lair/studio, and they want you to know just how epic this Rocktober month is going to be. Starting now and ending at '???', but probably right around Halloween, it's all rock horror all month. This episode features the dubious sweaty rock nightmare 'Rock n Roll Nightmare' featuring John Mikl Thor, and the trippy Japanese punk epic 'Wild Zero' featuring Guitar Wolf. Also featuring a short comedic ad performed by James of the Pop Cult Net podcast.

Celebrate the official start of the Japan Station podcast with not one, but two amazing guests! This episode I'm joined by filmmakers Dominic Pearce and Aaron McCann, the creators of the hilarious mockumentary Top Knot Detective. In the episode Aaron and Dominic talk about what inspired them to make Top Knot Detective and the challenges they had to overcome to make their vision a reality. We also discuss bad '80s action movies (specifically, the hilariously bad 1987 "masterpiece" Miami Connection), how you film in Japan without a permit, how they got the legendary Guitar Wolf to make an appearance in Top Knot Detective, Japanese talk shows where guests get to pet cats, and miniature ponies. If you're confused, don't worry. It will all make sense after you listen to the episode. So go do that now!

Also discussed are...no, you know what, I was gonna bring up other stuff we talked about, like how much we love the band Guitar Wolf, but we mostly talk about the existential horror of SPOOKY BUDDIES, the most brutal movie we've seen yet on this podcast after nearly 300 entries.

This is Bizzong! And things are going to get bizarre and weird as usual Zongers! This week's guest is the author of GUITAR WOLF, Nicholaus Patanude and is part of the 2016 New Bizarro Author Series. I always enjoy interviewing the NBAS writers and it is a unique opportunity to get the persepective or writers who are just beginning their journey into the genre. Nicholaus has provided one of the most open behind the scenes looks at the process of pitching story ideas, fleshing them out and working on the final product for the book series. Nicholaus also runs Psychodelic Horror Press, a publishing house he hopes he can utilize to create books that are not only a blend of high concept fiction and low brow punk driven pulp but also a book that transcends are mere vessel for words and becomes an object of beauty and artful appreciation. So strap in Zongers 'cuz we're gonna get a bit real this week on Bizzong!

This episode begins with yet another apology from Dillon and Charlie about their lack of regular episodes. Dillon tells a story about an accident he recently had in the bathroom. Then Charlie gives a review of the recent Chaos in Tejas festival in Austin. The guys complain about the Japanese punk band Guitar Wolf but give out some love to several of the other acts that played. Charlie does the news and then the podcast is interrupted several times by Dillon's son, Jack, who is hanging out in the studio. Dillon then relates some of his experiences with the new CB he installed in his car. The guys then try to play the Movie Game but reconsider since Jack is still hanging out. Enjoy!
We aren’t dead yet! In this triumphant return to the OSMcast Basil, Eric, and newcomer Lee tackle Tetsuro Takeuchi and Guitar Wolf’s wild and crazy “Jet rock ‘n’ roll”/zombie horror/comedy/cult classic/movie thing, Wild Zero! And succeed with marginal success! WARNING: Guitar Wolf’s music can be _really loud. _ OSMnotes We actually recorded this a week or two ago, so the Wold of OSM news is kinda old, but it’s all still vitally important, at least as far you should go buy Bangai-O Spirits RIGHT NOW. What’s actually important is that we’re back and we’ll be now updating on Mondays , not Fridays. And we should have it set for next Monday as well, where Lee and I talk about Cromartie High School. Be prepared!
