Content Warning: This episode of Encore discusses struggles with addiction and mental health issues. Believe it or not, Red Hot Chili Peppers were formed all the way back in 1982 as ‘Tony Flow and The Majestic Masters of Mayhem' - no idea why that name didn't ever catch on. But, with all due respect to original members - the late great guitarist Hilel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons; the current lineup that we all know and love formed some six years later in the final months of 1988. Joining original members Tony Flow - aka Anthony Kiedis from here on out, and Flea - aka… well… Flea… were guitar genius John Frusciante, and the world's most successful Will Ferrell Look Alike - Chad Smith. Go on and picture the Red Hot Chili Peppers in your head; chances are it is this core four that you're thinking of… although there were at least another 8 transient members of RHCP throughout the years, with Frusciante especially coming-and-going throughout the band's history. With so much turmoil within a band - it's crazy to think that the Chili Peppers have never actually broken up, despite well documented addictions, tragedy and loss, lack of focus, changes in sound, and the aforementioned lineup changes over their 40+ years in Rock.  So, for this episode of encore we're going to zoom in on perhaps their most successful pivot of all, becoming what felt like a brand new band all over again some 15+ years into their career - this is the story of Red Hot Chili Peppers' 2000 Hit - Californication with newly unearthed audio from the band themselves.

L'unico mio consiglio è quello di fiondarvi ancora in sala e andarlo a vedere, incorrendo all'ira di Frusciante, ma godendo appieno di un film che fa ridere e fa dimenticare qualsiasi problema. Secondo voi è poco? Per me proprio no!

Artist, musician, academic, and member of legacy American experimental band ONO Conor Tomaka joins the show once more, but with a specific purpose this time around. John Frusciante is already a God-level figure in the oeuvre of Safety Propaganda, but this time we are going back to the virtuoso guitarist of the Chili Peppers and experimental solo artist's infamous and masterful first two albums: Niandra Lades and Usually just a T-Shirt and Smile from the Streets you Hold. Both of these albums were recorded on a 4-track tape recorded in the early '90s when Frusciante was closing in on death due to intensely high and daily usages of heroin and crack cocaine. Video documents of the artist at his home show the once handsome and vivacious punk rock LA kid as a death shadow of his former self: cheeks sank all the way into his jaw, teeth falling out, ghastly white and pallid, anything resembling muscle tone vanished. He was disintegrated, and these albums are gorgeous-avant pop ballads disintegrating into the abyss. Niandra was partly recorded in Frusciante's bedroom at the mansion where he and the Chi-Peps recoded Blood Sugar Sex Magick at night time, and the second more ambient and abstract side was recorded after he'd left the band and plunged into addiction. Smile was recorded during similar sessions, he says, and includes vocals by the ghost of the late movie star and brother to the current greatest American actor Joaquin – River Phoenix. While both albums are masterpieces in differing ways, channeling Frusciante's enthusiasm for Beefheart, Zappa, Syd Barrett, and other weirdo troubadours, it is only Niandra that is still reissued and available for purchase. Frusciante has let Smile fall into obscurity – perhaps it is just too painful for him to listen to. Hail Frusciante. ‘Californication’, el séptimo álbum de los Red Hot Chili Peppers, es uno de los más vendidos de la carrera de la banda de rock alternativo. Publicado en el verano de 1999, el álbum marcó el regreso del guitarrista John Frusciante a la banda, después de su paso por un centro de desintoxicación después de casi una década de abuso de drogas. Today we're sharing one of the most intimate conversations Rick Rubin has ever had on Broken Record. It's with the famed guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante. Rick Rubin last spoke to John back in April when the Chili Peppers were getting ready to release their album, Unlimited Love, their first record with Frusciante in 16 years. Unlimited Love debuted at number one in the U.S. and 15 other countries. Today, just a little more than six months later, the Chili Peppers released a second Rick Rubin-produced album, Return Of The Dream Canteen. On today's episode we'll hear John Frusciante talk about the band's early music, including the making of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. They talk about how his contributions on slower, more melodic songs like “Under The Bridge” and “Breaking The Girl” helped expand the Chili Peppers funk punk sound. John also talks candidly about the dark, drug-addicted years that followed the intense success of Blood Sugar. And he explains how he was able to finally get sober and rejoin the Chili Peppers to record their classic, commercial comeback album, Californication. It's fair to say that the Chili's haven't really been at it for quite some time now. Whatever your cut off point on that period is, it's fairly hard to defend at least the last decade. They're always looking ahead to the next tour & the next song or album they can create to keep the dream alive. They're in a higher league than self-tribute legends like the Beach Boys or Chicago, who still tour & have active careers, but aren't looking to add anything new to the music conversation. Nor are they like the Beatles or the Beastie Boys, who will always be with us in some way, but can't continue the way they were. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a special case. They're just quietly around all the time AND they put out hit albums & songs every few years with remarkable consistency. They keep true to their core but always look ahead to what's next. Somehow, though, they're not mentioned in the same breath as U2 or Pearl Jam or the Stones. We take them for granted, dismiss them, possibly because we still think of them as penis-sock-wearing partiers who don't take anything too seriously. (I'd also put Green Day in this category. I would have said the same about the Foo Fighters a few years ago, but they've long since graduated to true elder statesmen legends.) Think of the Peppers' output. They started as funky punks carving out a special brand of proto rap rock, to where Anthony Kiedis didn't actually sing until several albums in. They worked with George Clinton on their SECOND ALBUM. Once they added John Frusciante & Chad Smith, they pivoted and created their first bona fide masterpiece, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. All that would already put them in the top ranks of alt bands. But they didn't stop. After more than 15 years they REALLY blew up. Californication, By the Way, Stadium Arcadium. Three masterpieces. And they keep going. They are undisputed legends whose love for the music keeps them alive in every way. They are the modern-day Stones: They started loosely, with okay material bolstered by a clear sonic vision, paying tribute to their favorite African American music, adding rock to the mix. They stick to their core members, other than periodic personnel changes (which for RHCP means Frusciante deciding when he wants to be in the band). And despite drugs & breaks & everything else, they always come back to the music & always give us something new. RHCP's mix of alt rock/punk, funk, psychedelic and pop is a close cousin to my music. I once told a drummer of mine: “When in doubt, make it funky.” Tthat's what I do. There's something funky and/or syncopated in every REC song. Plus I love the bass, and have written & arranged bass-focused songs that Flea would be proud of. You KNOW I'm into power pop – which covers the rock/punk/pop elements. And my production style has always had psychedelic elements & sweet layered harmonies. I could name dozens of REC songs as examples, but I'd say on the whole our album Parts and Labour is most representative of the RHCP influence. But then, both our hosts have a soft spot of sorts (one more so than the other) for One Hot Minute, the sixth full-length studio album by Red Hot Chili Peppers. An album which Steve believes ‘justifies their entire ridiculous existence as a band' and Remfry calls 'the most frustrating RHCP album in a back catalogue full of frustrating albums', One Hot Minute is the follow-up to the world conquering Blood Sugar Sex Magik, an album that firmly established Red Hot Chili Peppers as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Disaster followed soon after however as John Frusciante became disenchanted with fame and quit, Anthony Kiedis relapsed after 5 years clean, and Flea (gulp) ... sang! To replace Frusciante, the Chilis looked to former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, a wonderful guitarist who errr ... doesn't really like funk. Bit of an issue for the biggest funk rock band in the world, but they persevered all the same, creating the most eccentric album the band would ever release in the process. Largely ignored by a large swathe of the band's fans (and the band themselves to be fair) One Hot Minute has nevertheless garnered devotional cult adoration by a small minority and has become the most celebrated Red Hot Chili Peppers album among those who can not f**king stand the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Today the Red Hot Chili Peppers are a well known by all as one of the alternative rock founders, and that fame began with Blood Sugar Sex Magik, their fifth studio album.  This was the first album created under their new Warner Brothers label, and was recorded at the Houdini mansion in Los Angeles.  Front man Anthony Kiedis, guitarist John Frusciante, and bassist Flea moved into the former house of Harry Houdini for the duration of the recording session, but drummer Chad Smith did not.  Kiedis claims that Smith wouldn't stay in the house because he thought it was haunted, through Smith denies this.Flea and Kiedis met in high school during a brawl, and eventually decided to form a band.  The original lineup consisted of Hillel Slovak on guitar and Jack Irons on drums.  Slovak died of a drug overdose after the group's third album, replaced by Frusciante.  Irons left the group in reaction to Slovak's death, not wanting to be in a group where his friends were dying.  Irons would be replaced by Chad Smith.  Unfortunately, drug use and abuse would plague the group long after Slovak's overdose.The band's fourth album entitled Mother's Milk would become a success, with the single cover of Stevie Wonder's “Higher Ground”  leading to mainstream interest.While Blood Sugar Sex Magik was the start of mainstream popularity for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, it would mark the end for guitarist John Frusciante.  Frusciante enjoyed being in the underground music scene, and hated the popularity the group was experiencing.  He left the group in 1992 in the middle of their world tour.  Frusciante would eventually rejoin the group in 1998.Under the BridgeThis is the track that put the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the mainstream map. Anthony Kiedis wrote this song about the hopelessness and loneliness he felt as a result of dependence on narcotics.  He was reluctant to share the lyrics with the group, because he didn't think it fit well with the rest of their repertoire.  However, the group took it in and it became a big breakthrough hit for them.Give It AwayThe first single from the album originated in an ongoing jam session between John Frusciante and bassist Flea.  The lyrics were inspired by selflessness that Kiedis observed from his girlfriend when she gave away clothes in her closet that Kiedis liked.  The idea of giving things away was new to him, as he expected from his upbringing that you had to take what you wanted, because no one would give it to you.If You Have to AskThis is a deeper cut from the album, with a funky guitar intro and stream-of-consciousness rap lyrics.Breaking the GirlThe fourth single from the album was inspired by the turbulent relationship between Anthony Kiedis and his former girlfriend, Carmen Hawk.  Frusciante wrote the music under inspiration from Led Zeppelin's "The Battle of Evermore."  The video features a cameo by River Phoenix, and features guitarist Arik Marshall on guitar.  Marshall briefly replaced Frusciante, though he did not play on the track itself.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the animated television series “X-Men”The animated series for Marvel's X-Men premiered in October of 1991, ushering in a new era of superhero cartoons. STAFF PICKS:Rush by Big Audio Dynamite IIWayne starts the staff picks with the second iteration of a group headed by Mick Jones of The Clash after leaving that group.  The song mixes disparate styles and samples, including The Who's "Baba O'Riley."   "Somehow  I stayed thin while other guys got fat."Dreamline by RushBruce's staff pick is the lead track from Rush's Roll the Bones.  Dreamline is about being young and ready to test your mettle against the world, "learning that we're only immortal for a limited time."Shiny Happy People by R.E.M. Brian features Athens, Georgia's favorite sons playing a piece inspired by a line from Chinese propaganda posters, “shiny happy people holding hands.”  It was used ironically, as this was only two years after the Tiananmen Square crackdown in which hundreds were killed. Kate Pierce of the B-52's, another Athens band, joins for the female vocals.Hole Hearted by ExtremeRob finishes out the staff picks with an acoustic driven song with great harmonies off the fourth single from Exreme's Pornograffiti.  Nuno Bettencourt wrote this - on the toilet - when he got his first 12-string.  Led Zeppelin's third album was an inspiration.     INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Wham! by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double TroubleThis blues instrumental is off "The Sky Is Crying," a compilation of songs released in November of 1991 after the death of Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Casi un año antes del lanzamiento del disco, el guitarrista Hillel Slovak murió de sobredosis, lo que causó que el batería Jack Irons abandonase la banda. John Frusciante y Chad Smith los reemplazaron respectivamente. Frusciante alteraría en gran medida el sonido de la banda, poniendo más énfasis en sonidos melódicos que en los rítmicos, que hasta entonces dominaban el estilo del grupo californiano. Michael Beinhorn quiso dotar al álbum de un sonido más contundente, con riffs de guitarra heavy metal así como un excesivo overdubbing, lo que no era del agrado de Frusciante, y aquello provocó enfrentamientos entre ambos.

PART 1 of our "10th EPISODE SPECTACULAR" !! Matt chooses 1999's 'Californiacation'. For him it was his grad year (it was released in June, the grad month) and incites memories of his first car - a 1989 Ford Escort - where he played this album on cassette often. There is an attachment and bond he has with this album with a late friend of his, as well, who together did their best Frusciante/Flea impression in their first Edmonton band (Whatbox). Frusciante's comeback story is amazing leading up to this album. His guitar style and even vocal and songwriting style had a enormous impact on Matt. **** Matt grew up on Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Cinderella before graduating to AC/DC, Nirvana and Pearl Jam..as well as all the 60s and 70s rock bands that his father passed onto him. As time has passed Rage Against the Machine , Queens of the Stone Age and Tool reigned supreme. Favourite all time artist, however? Neil Young.
