A ctivist and author Peter Gelderloos returns to the Porpoise Almanac to discuss his latest book, "They Will Beat the Memory Out of Us." With a lifetime of activism under his belt, Peter shares his heartfelt reflections on the enduring struggles of social movements, the critical role of collective memory, and the widening gap between generations in the digital age. Our conversation takes a deep dive into the complexities of maintaining intergenerational connections amidst capitalism's isolating forces, highlighting how social media often exacerbates these divides rather than bridging them. Together, we navigate the labyrinth of political ideologies, examining the fluid nature of anarchism and the need for adaptability in today's rapidly changing world. Peter sheds light on the pitfalls of rigid frameworks and the resilience of grassroots mutual aid, contrasting these with the inefficiencies of traditional governmental responses. We explore the fascinating potential for engaging with right-wing narratives, probing the surprising openness some individuals have toward systemic issues and the necessity of preserving past activism's memory to inform contemporary efforts. Our discussion further extends to supporting incarcerated individuals, underscoring the importance of memory and community in aiding their re-entry into society. Peter's insights on navigating imperfections within activism offer a candid look at the challenges of fostering collective accountability and healing. His work resonates profoundly with anyone feeling adrift in modern movements, and we encourage our listeners to explore his writings for a deeper understanding of building resilient, generational communities. With Peter Gelderloos and Vicky Osterweil. Whether it is in the fight against police violence, ecological destruction, or any other manifestation of patriarchal white supremacy, time and again, the hard-earned lessons of past struggles seem to get forgotten. Our social movements are capable of generating significant momentum, moments of far-reaching revolt, but we suffer from a kind of amnesia - an inability to pass on lessons learned from one generation to the next. And so each new wave of activism starts from scratch, disconnected from the strategies, successes, and failures of those that came before. In this episode, we discuss the strategic imposition of nonviolence and other pacification techniques used by the state. We talk about revolutionary imagination, mutual aid, and what gets left out of official histories of struggle, from the Civil Rights era to the George Floyd uprisings. We discuss the need to make space for both joy and grief in our movements, and the importance of physical place to building collective memory. --- Peter Gelderloos is a writer and social movement participant. He is the author of They Will Beat the Memory Out of Us: Forcing Nonviolence on Forgetful Movements, The Solutions are Already Here: Strategies for Ecological Revolution from Below, How Nonviolence Protects the State, Anarchy Works, The Failure of Non-Violence, and Worshiping Power: An Anarchist View of Early State Formation. Vicky Osterweil is a writer, worker and agitator based in Philadelphia. She is the author of In Defense of Looting: A Riotous History of Uncivil Action (Bold Type Books) and an upcoming book about Intellectual Property and the corporate domination of culture, The Extended Universe, which is due to be published by Haymarket in 2025.

Nothing short of revolution is required to address the global ecological crisis. The technocratic solutions presented to us by various capitalist nation-states are less than sufficient in mitigating the most dire consequences of biospheric collapse and runaway climate change. In fact, more than just merely insufficient, these top-down so-called “solutions” reimpose the dominant socioeconomic and political order producing the crisis to begin with. As Gelderloos describes and points to 'The Solutions are Already Here,' numerous land-based movements around the world are rising to the occasion — actively protecting territories from extractive capitalist enterprises, reclaiming what has been taken and exploited for industry, and building resilient autonomous communities and networks, many of which that span the artificially imposed rural-urban divide. To really grasp the scale and scope of this ecological revolution from below, Gelderloos lets representatives of these movements speak for themselves, weaving them into a tapestry that enlivens a radical imagination of what a post-capitalist world may hold. Peter Gelderloos joins us again to discuss his recent book "The Solutions are Already Here: Strategies for Ecological Revolution from Below". The conversation is framed around ecological collapse, the complexity of tackling these issues, and detangling climate change from the conversations around the carbon footprint. How does capitalism utilize climate change to continue its path to exploit the resources on the planet through tools like the green new deal, and how do we respond to this greenwashing? We explore the concept of community-building, the power of utopia, and what kind of tools are at our disposal to find ways to gum up the system destroying the ecosystem. Today, I'm very excited to share a conversation with you that I had with Peter Gelderloos, author of the new book The Solutions Are Already Here, available now through Pluto Press. Peter and I talk about why “climate change” doesn't quite capture the urgency of ecological catastrophe, why a fixation on “fossil fuels” is a strategic error, the kinship relations that inform our intricate and intimate connections to all living critters and the planet itself, indigenous wisdom and situated knowledges, and a whole helluva lot more. This comes directly after he won a trial against the federal Bureau of Prisons showing that he had been set up and punished for false reasons, subjected to obvious acts of petty and not so petty vengeance by the corrections officers, and in spite of the fact that his security level should have him at a medium security facility rather than a high security like Lee. There is a continued call-in campaign that his supporters are asking y'all to participate in. Peter Gelderloos on Counter Insurgency. In this episode we revisit an interview we did with Anarchist author, Peter Gelderloos, in 2017. He talks to us about the constant war being waged by states against their populations and gives an overview of how this played out in Spain during the police operations known as Pandora and Piñata. He also touches on the historical process of militarization which he explores fully in his book Worshipping Power: An Anarchist View of Early State Formation. For an update on some of the history since 2017, check out the interview Peter did with It's Going Down in 2019.You can also hear his take on what to expect from the Biden presidency in his 2021 interview with IGD.subMedia is entirely funded by our listeners and viewers. When first hearing about anarchy and its aspirations, many people dismiss it as utopian, dangerous, or impossible. If you're an anarchist, you've probably come across this knee-jerk reaction lots of folks seem to have when initially coming into contact with the ideas. It’s in these moments I’m reminded of a quote attributed to Mikhail Bakunin: “By striving to do the impossible, man has always achieved what is possible. Those who have cautiously done no more than they believed possible have never taken a single step forward”. It’s important to remember that our understanding of ‘the possible’ is embedded in a cultural context that often attempts to cage our ambitions and silence our desires. We who have the audacity to defy these psychological borders and strive for a social reality beyond domination have challenging terrains to navigate. How do we go about expanding cooperation in a world obsessed with coercion? And what led humans to adopt these destructive ways of relating to one another, to begin with? There is much to be learned and unlearned and, in this episode, we discuss how states originally formed and how we can move beyond them. Peter Gelderloos is an anarchist, activist, and writer whose work has come to be known by many as foundational anarchist literature and essential canon for anarchist thought. The titles of his books are Worshipping Power: An Anarchist View of Early State Formation, The Failure of Nonviolence: From the Arab Spring to Occupy, Anarchy Works, and How Nonviolence Protects The State. Its not uncommon to hear pundits and regular folks making comparisons between the crises we are now facing and other historical moments, such as the 1920s in Germany or the global rebellions of the 1960s. But is this an effective approach for gauging the potential of now? For the hour, anarchist author and activist Peter Gelderloos shares some of his thoughts on those comparisons, on the revolutionary potential of this moment were living in and some lessons from past movements that we might keep in mind now to make the most out of these dire times. You can find many of Peters writings on TheAnarchistLibrary.Org, available through AK Press and independent bookstores. You can hear our past interviews with Peter by visiting our website.

We'll talk with an American activist in Spain who's an expert on rent strikes, and a student activist at the University of California who proposes a strike for the people's social welfare. Cooperation Jackson, the Black activist and workers cooperative organization headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is circulating a call for a general strike and a list of demands that would reorganize the economy to protect working people. The strike would begin on May first -- May Day. We asked Cooperation Jackson spokesman Kali Akuno: How to you launch a general strike when much of the country is under a general lockdown? Peter Gelderloos is an American anarchist activist, now living in Spain. He's author of many books and articles, including a recent study of rent strikes throughout history. Gelderloos says strikes are the best response to the capitalist-controlled government's behavior in the epidemic. Graduate student teaching assistants at the University of California have been engaged in a series of protests over wages and working conditions. Semassa Boko is a Phd candidate at the university's Irvine campus. He's using his experience to help launch a strike in response to the epidemic and social crisis. Boko wrote an article on the concept of a social welfare strike.

In this segment of my discussion with anarchist, activist, and writer Peter Gelderloos we discuss his book ’Worshiping Power: An Anarchist View of Early State Formation,’ which examines state formation in societies through out human history. What stands out from this discussion is: 1) there are numerous examples of societies throughout human history that have somewhat fluidly and successfully moved through pre-state, state, and post-state in their structure; 2) the formation of the “state” is not the culmination of human “progress” — this narrative is ultimately the product of chauvinistic and patriarchal forms of thought, an attempt to justify the genocidal current that runs through any defense of the State as the ultimate form of human organization. As Peter demonstrates in this work, the now common view of the State, and our resistance (or lack of) to State power, is tied to these widespread assumptions. The sooner we recognize the faults in that line of thinking, the better off we will be in organizing and adequately expanding our use of tactics in dismantling the State, as well the logic of Capital the State defends and imposes upon us. Peter Gelderloos is an anarchist and author of numerous books and essays relating to anarchism, organizing resistance to the State, and historical analysis of state formation in human societies. Some of his works include ‘What is Democracy?,’ ‘How Nonviolence Protects the State,’ ‘Anarchy Works,’ ‘The Failure of Nonviolence: From the Arab Spring to Occupy,’ and ‘Worshipping Power: An Anarchist View of Early State Formation.’ Peter currently resides in Spain. In this episode, I speak with anarchist, activist, and writer Peter Gelderloos. Peter is the author of numerous books, two of which we examine in this interview — ‘How Nonviolence Protects The State’ and ’Worshiping Power: An Anarchist View of Early State Formation.’ In this discussion, I ask Peter to examine the most lauded nonviolent movements in recent history: the anti-colonial movement in India in the early 20th century (in which Mahatma Gandhi became well known for his use of nonviolent resistance against British rule) and the civil rights and anti-war movements in the United States in the 1950s through the 1970s. As Peter elaborates in his book ‘How Nonviolence Protects The State,’ nonviolence and pacifism in general severely limit resistance movements in adequately and seriously upending and defending against entrenched systems of oppression and violence — the State being the ultimate manifestation of this in the world today (and through out much of human history, as we explore later). We get at the root of his critique of nonviolence, and attempt to clarify his position on this subject. In the later half of this episode, we move onto his most recent book ‘Worshiping Power,’ in which Peter examines early state formation in societies through out human history. What stands out from this discussion is: 1) there are numerous examples of societies throughout human history that have fluidly and successfully moved through pre-state, state, and post-state in their organizing structure; 2) the formation of the State in any given society is not the culmination of human “progress” — this narrative is ultimately the product of chauvinistic and patriarchal forms of thought, an attempt to justify the genocidal current that runs through any defense of the State as the ultimate form of human organization. As Peter demonstrates in this work, the now common view of the State, and our resistance (or lack of) to State power, is tied to these widespread assumptions.

“Nonviolence has failed on a global level. It has proven to be a great friend to governments, political parties, police departments, and NGOs; and a traitor to our struggles for freedom, dignity, and well-being. The vast majority of its proponents have jumped ship to cozy up to the media, the state, or wealthy benefactors, using any cheap trick, manipulation, or form of violence (like attacking fellow protesters or helping the cops carry out arrests) that comes in handy to win the contest, even if it means the division or death of a movement. Many have proven themselves to be opportunists, politicians, or careerists. And a principled minority who actually have remained true to their historical movements still have not answered for past failings or current weaknesses.” -Peter Gelderloos.
