In this episode of The First Day podcast, host Bill Stanczykiewicz welcomes Jaclyn Piatek, Ph.D., professor at UNC Charlotte and co-author of Volunteer Management: A Strategic Approach, to bust the myth that volunteers are just free labor. Piatek lays the groundwork for a new way of thinking about volunteers, not as warm bodies to do the grunt work, but as essential, diverse contributors who require thoughtful management, planning, and engagement. And yes, that includes job descriptions, onboarding, and believe it or not, offboarding too. Strategic volunteerism isn't about saving money. It's about building capacity. Piatek dives into the inequities surrounding volunteerism, noting that folks who are unemployed, lack internet access, or are outside your usual social circles may be less likely to volunteer, not because they don't want to, but because they're not being asked. “The number one reason people volunteer is because they're invited,” she explains, urging nonprofits to cast a wider, more inclusive net. Volunteer roles must also match skills and motivations, whether that's retirees looking to give back, professionals flexing their muscles post-recession, or someone who just really wants to make friends while stuffing envelopes. And let's not forget what's in it for them, volunteering doesn't just benefit nonprofits. Turns out it's great for your health, your social life, and maybe even your blood pressure. Some mental health professionals are literally prescribing it. Nonprofits that understand these benefits can create richer, more engaging experiences that keep volunteers coming back. Engagement, Piatek says, is more than just a smile and a clipboard, it's about making people feel seen, valued, and connected to the mission. And please, for the love of all that is strategic, don't ghost your former volunteers. Keep in touch. Finally, we get into the juicy stuff: fundraising. Can volunteers also be donors? Absolutely, and they're often your biggest champions. Piatek encourages nonprofits to stop underestimating this powerful group. They're not just spreading mulch; they're spreading the word, influencing peers, and yes, potentially writing checks. Volunteers who feel invested, emotionally and strategically, can become some of your most reliable financial supporters. So remember: a well-managed volunteer is not just a helper. They're a mission multiplier.

Il titolo della seconda puntata della quinta stagione di J-TACTICS, trae spunto da: "Questo pazzo, pazzo, pazzo, pazzo mondo", (It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World) è un film del 1963, diretto e prodotto da Stanley Kramer.Prima di morire in seguito ad un incidente avvenuto in autostrada, un gangster rivela agli automobilisti accorsi in suo aiuto che in un certo punto della città di Las Vegas è nascosta una grande quantità di denaro, a disposizione di chi la scoverà per primo.I soccorritori, persone qualsiasi ed estranee l'una all'altra, da quel momento sono animati dall'improvvisa brama di impossessarsi del tesoro.Nasce così una gara di velocità senza esclusione di colpi alla quale, man mano, prenderanno parte in modo vario altre persone e persino un insospettabile ispettore di polizia, sedotto dall'idea di compensare l'avara scarsezza della propria imminente pensione con quel provvidenziale mucchio di quattrini.Nessuno pero' potrà godersi il denaro disonestamente accumulato, che verrà disperso dal vento su una grande piazza affollata, al termine d'una lotta collettiva.Tutti i concorrenti alla singolare gara finiranno all'ospedale.Facendo la nostra solita trasposizione dalla cinematografia al mondo del calcio, ed in modo particolare alle vicende juventine, potremo utilizzare il titolo e le vicende narrate nella pellicola per analizzare il match andato in scena all'Allianz Stadium tra i bianconeri e i granata della Salernitana.Sulla carta una partita tranquilla per gli uomini di Allegri opposti ad una volenterosa compagine ben guidata da mister Nicola, ma che al contrario si è rivelata essere caoticamenye imprevedibile e pazza, proprio come la trama del film del regista Kramer.Pazzo, pazzo, pazzo, mondo per un altrettanto pazza pazza pazza partita andata in scena domenica sera a Torino.Finisce con un pirotecnico 2-2 tra la Juventus e la Salernitana al termine di un folle match durato oltre 100 minuti e che ha avuto un finale pazzesco con i bianconeri che prima rimontano il doppio svantaggio e poi trovano addirittura il possibile gol vittoria annullato però dal Var facendo esplodere una rissa in campo e tensione su entrambe le panchine.Il risultato finale è un pareggio che lascia tutti con l'amaro in bocca.Un pareggio arrivato infatti al termine di una gara in cui i bianconeri dopo un buon inizio sono praticamente spariti dal campo venendo sopraffati dalla maggiore intensità, grinta e fame dei granata Salernitani che maramaldeggiano la squadra di Allegri soprattutto sulle fasce con le iniziative dei buoni Mazzocchi e Candreva.Non a caso sono proprio i due esterni della formazione di Nicola a portare in vantaggio i campani: Mazzocchi beffa un sempre più spento Cuadrado, entra in area e mette un cross, Candreva all'altezza del secondo palo anticipa il proprio marcatore depositando la palla alle spalle di Perin.A questo punto ci si attenderebbe giustamente la reazione dei padroni di casa e invece, dopo il vantaggio, è ancora la Salernitana ad essere famelica e con coraggio continua a mettere in costante difficoltà la retroguardia bianconera soprattutto con la velocità di Dia.La Juve si affida solo alle iniziative dei singoli e di un isolato Vlahovic che però non ha mai l'occasione per andare alla conclusione.La pazzia del match è degli stessi bianconeri non ha però fine, nel recupero del primo tempo poi i padroni di casa vedono addirittura aumentare lo svantaggio con Piatek che trasforma il calcio di rigore concesso dall'arbitro Marcenaro per fallo di mano di Bremer assegnato attraverso il Var.Nell'intervallo Allegri probabilmente fa una ramanzina ai suoi e prova ad invertire la rotta di un match totalmente in salita e dall'esito inaspettato mandando in campo Milik al posto di uno spento Kean.I bianconeri tornano in campo con un piglio diverso e dopo una manciata di minuti della ripresa riducono lo svantaggio con il colpo di testa di Bremer sul perfetto cross di Kostic.Il gol dell'1-2 dà finalmente vita e brio ad una stantia Juventus che spinge alla ricerca del pareggio andandoci vicino con le conclusioni di Vlahovic e gli affondi in profondità di Miretti.Anche Milik partecipa al pazzo arrembaggio con un tiro che accarezza il palo alla destra di Sepe.Una Juve riversata totalmente in avanti con una Salernitana che prova di tanto in tanto a ripartire in velocità impensierendo Perin costretto ad intervenire per evitare il terzo gol degli ospiti.I minuti intanto passano inesorabilmente e i cambi di Allegri sembrano non incidere, i bianconeri continuano a farsi pericolosi dalle parti di Sepe con Milik che ci prova in tutti i modi sfiorando anche la traversa senza però riuscire a mettere dentro il pallone.Il forcing bianconero produce però i suoi frutti,il pareggio arriva al secondo minuto di recupero con Bonucci che dopo essersi visto parare il rigore da Sepe riuscendo comunque a ribadire in rete la palla.La follia collettiva che sembra aver pervaso lo Stadium pare essere esaurita, ma così non è.Al quinto minuto di recupero infatti Milik di testa su calcio d'angolo segna il gol del clamoroso 3-2 che sancirebbe una vittoria che solo tre minuti prima sembrava impossibile per la Juventus.Folle e pazza gioia bianconera in uno Stadium che esplode in un boato liberatorio.Ma le emozioni non sono ancora finite, l'arbitro va al Var e annulla la rete per un fuorigioco di Bonucci che pur non toccando il pallone avrebbe influito sull'azione secondo una ricostruzione assurda del direttore di gara. Succede di tutto con l'arbitro costretto ad estrarre cartellini rossi a raffica: espulsi Milik, Cuadrado, Fazio e anche Allegri dalla panchina.Pazza partita non meno pazzo il direttore di gara.Matteo Marcenaro è finito inevitabilmente nella bufera.
