EPISODE 1548: In this KEEN ON episode, Andrew talks to Peter Cave, the author of HOW TO THINK LIKE A PHILOSOPHER, about the scholars, dreamers and sages who can teach us how to live Peter Cave read philosophy at University College London (UCL) and King's College, Cambridge. He has held lectureships in philosophy at UCL, University of Khartoum, Sudan, and City University London; he was an associate lecturer for many many years at the Open University (and is now Honorary) and New York University (London). Further, he is a principal examiner for the Chartered Insurance Institute. Peter is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Honorary Member of Population Matters, former member of the Council of the Royal Institute of Philosophy and Chair of Humanist Philosophers – and is a Patron of Humanists UK. He is also a keen supporter of the Wigmore Hall and for some years English National Opera (now under unjustified funding cuts). He was elected to The Athenaeum Pall Mall Club in 2007. Author of numerous philosophical papers, both serious and humorous, Peter's particular interests are paradoxes, ethical matters and life and death dilemmas. He has given guest philosophy lectures at, for example, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Bucharest and has edited collections and written articles for various publications. In previous decades, he was columnist on taxation and money myths for The Investor magazine. Peter has scripted and presented BBC radio philosophy programmes – from a series on the Paradox Fair to more serious ones on John Stuart Mill. He often takes part in public debates on religion, ethics and socio-political matters, in Britain and on the Continent – and believes that one should ‘stand up and be counted' when faced with some horrors, horrors that are often the result of religious belief or unbridled enthusiasm for capitalism. Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Speakers included: Dr. Jean Popwell, Cassie Miller, Dr Mina Alikani, Dr Thomas B. (Rusty) Pool, Dr Gerardo Mendizaba Ruiz, Dr Michael Skumial and Dr. Alison Campbell and Ineabelle Collazo Then you will hear the comments following the session titled ‘Mind the [generation] gap' which focussed on showcasing the new demographic entering the ART workforce, the digital native, Gen Z and looked at how with an ageing workforce what will attract new talent to the profession and how best do labs work with different generations having different knowledge in terms of systems and process. Quality Control in the Cloud Watch the full session here What was discussed: Cyber Security issuesThe impact that has in the lab & How labs can overcome the risks - guy around 7 min Security within labs can be restrictive - separate platforms have to be used for software that is being implemented. How you have to think about every way software is implemented - Hacking can happen through Ultrasound machinesWhat could happen if QC data is connected to patient success - how Dr Google could act against the lab with a patient seeing data and thinking something wasn't done correctly? You can anonymise systemsShould data from an embryoscope be part of the medical record? Extra info that is discoverable could be misinterpreted. How sometimes too much information can be detrimental.Considerations about choosing a product that is customizable, so not everything goes to the EMR. Now we're going to hear the panelists from the Mind the ‘Generation' Gap which was hosted by Veteran senior embryologist, lab manager and mentor, Dr Kimball Pomeroy and former embryologist and current educator Huey Huynh, Panelists Savannah Palmer, Toyin Ojo and Angela Regan and Presenters: Fran Farlie Radhika Kakula-vara-pu and Chloe HeWatch the full session here Discussion about obstacles affecting the LGBTQ+ community Questions were raised about climate emissions from IVF and the importance of labs being sustainable. When Colombian conservationist Sara Inés Lara started helping women from rural communities access family planning and education and become guardians of their own environment, she got a lot of pushback from local men and conservation colleagues. After all, it was a taboo to address environmental protection, women's empowerment and population. Seventeen years later, her NGO Women for Conservation has reached more than 2,000 women and helped the recovery of the yellow-eared parrot, which was downlisted from the IUCN Red List in 2021. More than ever, Sara is convinced that this is the correct way to do conservation. On this episode, Sara Inés Lara and Catriona Spaven Donn, Empower to Plan Coordinator from Population Matters, talk about: Why it is important to engage women in conservation Why addressing conservation, family planning and population is crucial How family planning programs help women have better lives and get involved in local protection of nature What experience Sara and Cat have had talking about population and conservation How Colombian activists saved the yellow-eared parrot If you'd like to learn more about women's rights and environmental justice, listen to the interview “The Most Effective Conservation Strategy? Empower women”. Sara Inés Lara founded Women for Conservation which has empowered more than 2,000 women in rural communities through conservation education, environmentally sustainable livelihoods, and access to family planning. Sara has been recognized as One in a Hundred Great Latin American Women by Billiken Magazine. Catriona Spaven-Donn works for UK-based charity Population Matters, which supports Women for Conservation as part of their Empower to Plan Program. Cat is passionate about the intersection of women's rights and environmental justice and has worked on women's empowerment and indigenous rights in Canada, Peru, Guatemala and Scotland. The climate pact achieved at COP26 was woefully inadequate. We could be in for over four degrees Fahrenheit of warming this century over pre-industrial temperatures, and some scenarios would put us closer to eight degrees. In this episode, Paul Sutton shares his observations from Glasgow, and we get assessments from a few other noted experts. Policymakers are not willing to embrace any climate actions that give up economic growth, but economic growth virtually guarantees climate disaster. The bottom line: only drastic policy and behavior changes will avoid a very bleak future. Sutton is a Professor in the Department of Geography & the Environment at the University of Denver. He served as an official delegate for the American Association of Geographers (AAG) at the COP26 UN Climate Summit in Glasgow in early November of 2021. He is not speaking for the AAG in this episode. One interesting class Paul teaches is Envisioning Utopia Through the Lens of a Wellbeing Economy. World Population Day may now be a week behind us, but its legacy lives on! In this episode, host Michael Bayliss talks to the new Executive Director of World Population Balance, Nandita Bajaj. WPB is a North American organisation dedicated to tackling the overpopulation issue through education, campaigns and podcasts – they are the makers of the Overpopulation Podcast after all! Nandita and Michael discovered they have many shared values beyond population including minimalism, being childfree and, most excitingly for both of us, we are big on veganism and animal rights! Therefore, our conversation goes in many pithy directions and intersections. Nandita also shares with PGAP her visions for the future of World Population Balance, her perspectives on the challenges of inclusion and diversity within the population sustainability movement, and her experiences growing up in the world's second most populous country India. I find it incredible that in 1 year, 24 episodes and 34 interviews I haven't yet had the ‘vegan chat' with any of my guests on PGAP. This all changed with Nandita! To celebrate this milestone, I play the song ‘Abolicion' from the Peru/Melbourne pop-punk project, Futuro Vegan Pop. The lead brains behind this musical project, Pedro Allemant, is a long-time friend of yours truly and a total inspiration in the animal activism sphere. I even played keyboards on a couple of Futuro songs back in ye days afore the COVID when we never ‘ad it so good. I also share my interview on Australian Talk Back radio following the excitement, confusion and hostility in the mainstream media after Population Matters ‘Change Champions' awards the other week. The media weren't that interested in the Women's Champion award that went to Wendo Aszed in Kenya, or Kohinur Khyum Tithila from Bangladesh who received the Media award. Rather, they were far more preoccupied with the special award given to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex who received a ‘special' award for stopping at two children. Anything to do with Harry and Meghan has a peculiar effect on our collective psyche, and it raises the question, is it better to avoid the royals and receive little attention, or include the royals and receive a lot of mostly hostile media attention? A philosophical musing indeed that still troubles me… Too much podcasting barely enough for you? Want to explore more of the adventures (or in my case misadventures) that were raised during this episode? GLAD YOU ASKED! This is a fancy way of saying I'm about to bombard you with a bunch of links. It's all in the phrasing... Find out more about World Population Balance here. (https://www.worldpopulationbalance.org/). If you haven't heard it yet, their The Overpopulation Podcast (https://www.worldpopulationbalance.org/podcasts) is a class act. WPB launched an online panel discussion: “Pronatalism and Overpopulation | Challenging The Social Pressures to Procreate” on the 07th of July for world population day, which Nandita discussed with me. On the day it was a bit late for Australian clocks, but the highlights can now be seen on WPB YouTube channel here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31KyVagVAoM&t=54s). My interview with Tom Elliot on Melbourne's 3AW Drive talk back radio is immortalised for all here. If you are interested in finding out more about Population Matters' ‘Change Champions' award, you can find it here. This and more on their media release here. (https://population.org.au/media-releases/wpd2021/) SPA's very own Dr. Jane O'Sullivan is very popular. Firstly she was interviewed on the award winning ‘This Sustainable Life (https://joshuaspodek.com/guests/jane-osullivan)' podcast hosted by Joshua Spodeck. Jane debunks the ‘ageing population crisis' myths with Joshua as they explore SPA's discussion paper ‘Silver Tsunami or Silver Lining' (https://population.org.au/discussion-papers/ageing/) in which Jane was lead author. She was also a presneter at the World Population Day presentation and panel discussion –_ "What is a sustainable population? Why, when and what should we do about it?"_ This event was organised with Scientists Warning Europe, and a video of Jane's talk and the SWE media release can be found on the SPA website here. No Babble this week due to unavoidable life-getting-in-the-way reasons. We thought we'd give this one another airing as we've had a few requests recently for an episode about (over?)population. Look: we did one, back in 2018. Enjoy. More and more people on Earth = nailed-on environmental catastrophe. Yes? We talk to Alistair Currie from Population Matters to find out. Dashedly thorny issue, this. Isn't the real issue how much of a mess rich people are making of the planet, not how many poor people there are? Is talking about population inherently racist? And short of nuclear war, what could anyone nice realistically hope to be done about it anyway? In our candid chat, Alistair takes all of that - and more - head on. Sustainababble is your friendly environment podcast, out weekly. Theme music by the legendary Dicky Moore – @dickymoo. Sustainababble logo by the splendid Arthur Stovell. No matter what you think we should do, everyone gets that there is some connection between population and sustainability. Everyone knows our population is increasing. We're consuming more than ever. How do we talk about this issue? I think most people shy away from it. I know I did, until recently feeling "what's the point in talking about something we can't do anything about?" I saw problems with overpopulation but the only cures I knew of seemed worse than the disease.Today's guest, Bill Ryerson, has been working on these issues with tremendous effects increasing prosperity, stability, freedom, and things everyone prefers---think the opposite of the One Child policy. He shares what he does, his sources of inspiration, why what he does works, and how it started for him with Mexican soap operas.Actually, it started long before with action of the sort nearly everyone talks about today---laws, information, facts---but it didn't work. The Mexican soap opera started what worked, and has around the globe for decades. After you list, read the book Over. You only have to see a few images to get the value, and understanding that seeing can create.I hope this episode helped loosen the grip of beliefs of mainstream culture. Do a few instances of ugly motives or methods of addressing overpopulation in the past mean overpopulation is not a problem? Or do they mean it’s a problem we dare not attempt to solve? Do they mean there aren’t loving, equitable and ethical ways of reversing population growth? Whether the excuse for avoiding the overpopulation issue is the existence of economic inequality, unequal distribution of resources, or the belief that discussing or addressing overpopulation perpetuates toxic cycles of racism, sexism, and colonialist agendas, it’s still ‘Overpopulation Denial’. In this episode, we share classic, textbook examples of overpopulation denial, and proceed to debunk them. A recent episode of TRT World’s Roundtable program provided an overpopulation denial opportunity to two guests, Professor of Epidemiology Ray Deonandan from the University of Ottawa, and Associate Professor of Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Rajani Bhatia from the University of Albany. Our intention in debunking their statements is not to pick a fight. We’re simply treating this as an opportunity to improve overpopulation literacy with an open conversation, to correct misassumptions, and to find common ground that will ensure a brighter future for all. WPB staffer Carolyn VandenDolder says it well in this episode: “I think that we’re trying to create a new narrative around the topic – a more constructive one and one that does take into account social justice and the fact that we have, in the United States, far and away contributed to the mess more than anyone else.” We also hear from two enlightened guests on that same Roundtable program, Alistair Currie, head of campaigns and communications at Population Matters, and attorney Karin Kuhlemann, population ethicist at University College London. Roundtable is hosted by veteran journalist David Foster. Also in this episode, brief mention and dismissal of overpopulation denial at ReasonTV, and at Resilience.org – very disappointing. And an update on the One Planet, One Child Billboard Campaign. The staff at World Population Balance thanks YOU for your continuing support, and for making the One Planet, One Child Billboard Campaign possible. We share the pain of illness and death, and economic hardship brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope everyone is doing their part to stay in. It’s a good opportunity to catch up on past episodes of The Overpopulation Podcast. You should get college credit, because going through these episodes is like getting an advanced degree in the subject! DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: Population: Does it Need Controlling? Roundtable, on TRT World Population IS a Problem Episode 18 of The Overpopulation Podcast (Response to first instance of Chris Smaje overpopulation denial) Yes, (Over) Population IS a Problem! (Written response to first instance of Chris Smaje overpopulation denial) The Overpopulation Podcast is produced by World Population Balance, a non-profit organization committed to alerting and educating that overpopulation is the root cause of resource depletion, species extinction, poverty, and climate change. Our mission is to chart a path for human civilization that – rather than causing greater misery – enables good lives on a healthy planet. We advocate and support a smaller, truly sustainable human population – through dramatic and voluntary reduction in birth rates. We envision a world where no one suffers in dire poverty and misery for lack of enough food, water, and other basic needs. We see a world where all species thrive and where lower consumption and population are in balance with Earth’s finite resources. In the last century, the global population has exploded. Today, there are 7.7 billion people on the planet and that number is rising at the pace of another billion every 12 to 15 years. Scientists say this is simply unsustainable. In this week’s Beyond the Headlines, we’re asking, how many children is too many when it comes to climate change? We hear from Emma Lim, 18-year-old activist and creator of the No Future No Children pledge has vowed, along with over 5000 others, not to have children until governments around the world take substantive action on climate change. We’ll also hear from Professor Corey Bradshaw, fellow in Global Ecology at Flinders University in Australia, who has been modeling population growth and looking at what methods could cause the global population to decline. Robin Maynard, director of British-based campaign charity Population Matters, joins us to talk about why all this matters and whether he’s feeling optimistic about the future. There are groups of people who are believing that not having kids will be the best way to reduce our carbon footprint. Scott chats with one of these groups to ask why they think this way. Guest - Allistair Currie, head of campaigns and communications, Population Matters
In this session, local futures talk about what Durango will look like and be in 2040. Storytellers include: Sarah Lemcke is a certified early childhood educator, advocate for children and passionate champion for progressive education. She is employed at Riverview Elementary School as a preschool teacher for children ages 3-5. Having always been passionate and fascinated by alternative forms of education, she spent the summer training at a forest kindergarten in Zurich, Switzerland. Her experiences as a forest teacher altered her paradigm around education for the better. Sarah is committed to bringing best practices into public education and is proud to work in a district where this mindset is encouraged and supported. Dr. Richard Grossman practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Durango for 40 years. For most of that time he was the volunteer medical director of the health department. He has written the column Population Matters for The Durango Herald since 1995. In high school he read an advertisement in Scientific American titled “A Statement of Conviction about Overpopulation” which said, “We believe that widespread, effective and voluntary use of medically sound and individually acceptable birth control is an essential factor in any humane design to raise world living standards and achieve international peace.” He was hooked and since that time has done what he can to help every child born in Durango be planned, healthy and loved. In addition, he has learned about the limits to growth, and learned that humans have gone far beyond those limits. Greg Hoch worked for the City of Durango’s Community Development Department for 35 years. He retired in 2016 when he was the department director, a job he describes as administering the public decision-making processes related to the physical forms and associated change within the city.
On World Population Day, Helen Haran of St.Albans Population Matters explains why Sir David Attenborough thinks we need to act on our exploding population, and Malcolm Hull of Herts and Middlesex Butterfly Conservation wants us all to spend 15 lovely minutes looking at butterflies.
As it has been revealed that some Doctors are so overworked that they are effectively drunk on fatigue, Mike and Daisy speak to Adam Kay, himself a former junior doctor and author of This May Hurt about the real conditions doctors find themselves in and what the solution could be.As England seem to be doing OK so far in the World Cup, Tory MP Nick Boles is set to ask Theresa May in PM's questions today why they aren't flying St Georges flag along Whitehall - will he get his question in and will they go for the idea? And, in an odd move, a Japanese politician has motioned that people who choose not to have children are in fact selfish - Alastair Currie from Population Matters, a group who would argue people should think harder before having a family, joins Mike and Daisy to weigh up the pros and cons of either argument. As we watch resources for human survival (water, air, food, etc.) dwindle to dangers levels in some parts of the world, we have to start talking about population and ways we can mitigate our compounding growth. There are now over 7 billion people on this earth competing for space and resources. What we can we do? Listen to father of the modern population discussion, Dr. Paul Ehrlich and Bob Walker, president of the population institute talk about the underlying issues and ways we can address ... See More
The geographer Danny Dorling; Lionel Shriver, the author and patron of Population Matters; and Stephen Emmott, author of 10 Billion, join Matthew Sweet and an audience at Sage Gateshead to debate whether we should have fewer children. In 1968 a Stanford university professor, Dr Paul E. Ehrlich, published The Population Bomb. This call to arms became a global bestseller, influenced public policy and made its author a celebrity. It predicted mass starvation in the US and an England underwater by the year 2000. It also suggested adding ‘temporary sterilants' to the water supply as a way to stem the ensuing crisis. For decades it has come under fire for its alarmist tone and laughable foresight but with global population set to hit ten billion by 2050, will Ehrlich eventually be proved right? Danny Dorling is Professor of Geography at Oxford University and the author of Population 10 Billion. His research focuses on housing, health, employment, education and poverty. His recent books include Do We Need Economic Inequality? The Equality Effect, and he co-wrote Why Demography Matters.Lionel Shriver's novels include The Standing Chandelier, The Mandibles, and the award-winning We Need to Talk About Kevin. Lionel is a regular columnist at The Spectator and has written for numerous other publications including for The Wall Street Journal, New Statesman, and The Economist. She is a patron of Population Matters.Stephen Emmott is the author of Ten Billion, which he performed as a drama at the Royal Court Theatre. He is a Professor at Cambridge. His work develops new computational methods and ways of thinking about complex living systems. Producer: Craig Templeton Smith.
Robin Maynard has tremendous faith that the young people of the world have both tremendous power and growing awareness and interest in getting humanity back onto a sustainable path. Our guest, the director of Population Matters, shares his thinking about human overpopulation and talks about the organization’s goals, strategies and tactics. Like World Population Balance, his organization is working hard at “shifting those amplifiers in society who really could reach so many people and talk in a rational, humane and compassionate way about population.” There is still a perplexing guilt, awkwardness and hesitation to talk about population, among both the general public and even among leaders of environmental organizations. The good news is people ARE becoming a little less cautious in discussing the subject. Hosted by World Population Balance Executive Director Dave Gardner.
