Could embedded insurance result in mis-selling?

In the latest Insurance Post Podcast, Sicsic, managing partner of Sicsic Advisory, said embedded insurance has been around for a long time with travel and white good, but technology has widened the range of types of cover that can be sold in this way. However, he flagged that, with this type of cover, checks need to be made so consumers understand what they have purchased.Sicsic said: “Do people really understand that they are purchasing an insurance product, and does it meet their needs?Double cover“The classic issue we have seen over the years is having double cover. You are purchasing a new policy, but have it already covered in your main policy. I would call it mis-purchase. You mis-buy by not exactly understanding the cover you are getting, and then get a bad surprise at the point of claim.”Sicsic is joined on the podcast by Matthew Connell, director of policy and public affairs at the Chartered Insurance Institute, who outlines the pros and cons of embedded insurance, and the steps to take to make sure seamless selling doesn't result in consumers sleepwalking into the wrong cover. As well as being able to listen to the podcast by clicking on the player above, you can also download and keep this episode of the Insurance Post Podcast to listen to anytime, anywhere you want to.To download the episode, go to your podcast provider of choice (Apple, Google, Samsung, Spotify, Audible, etc) and search for Insurance Post. Hosted on Acast. Speaking during the latest Insurance Post Podcast, Grant said this autumn we will see the Stonegate and various eateries appeals looking at aggregation, the increased cost of working and furlough.Grant said: “I think furlough is the really big one here. It is the one with big financial implications, but, equally, it is a Marsh resilience wording. Will that translate across to policyholders on other wordings? We will have to see.”On the impact that these ongoing cases have had on the industry's reputation, Matthew Connell, director of policy and public affairs at the Chartered Insurance Institute, said customer satisfaction for business interruption since the Covid-19 lockdowns have been a few percentage points lower than for other types of insurance.Consumer perceptionsHowever, Connell said the Financial Conduct Authority's test case had drawn something of a line under things in terms of consumer perceptions. The FCA argued for policyholders that the 'disease' and 'prevention of access' clauses in the representative sample of 21 policy types provide cover in the circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, and that the trigger for cover caused policyholders' losses. In January 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that cover may be available for partial, as well as full, closure, and for mandatory closure orders that were not legally binding. The judgment brought to an end legal arguments under 14 types of policy issued by six insurers, and a substantial number of similar policies in the wider market that the FCA claimed would lead to claims being successful.Claims and litigationConnell said: “What is pre-occupying SMEs now is speed of claims and delivering on claims. That goes back to issues that payments aren't being made because litigation is going on for so long.”The duo also discuss whether a rebrand is required, how insurers have changed this type of cover, and the ways brokers have adapted the nature of conversations they have with policyholders to make sure BI insurance is fit for purpose. As well as being able to listen to the podcast by clicking on the player above, you can also download and keep this episode of the Insurance Post Podcast to listen to anytime, anywhere you want to.To download the episode, go to your podcast provider of choice (Apple, Google, Samsung, Spotify, Audible, etc.) and search for Insurance Post. In the latest episode of the Insurance Post Podcast, titled ‘Multi-occupancy buildings insurance after Grenfell', Laura Hughes, general insurance policy manager at the Association of British Insurers, said through the risk-sharing scheme the industry is playing its part in making tower blocks safer and cheaper to insure.Hughes added: “One of the real problems we have seen with some of these buildings is the fact that the capacity, or exposure, insurers are willing to take on is relatively limited and, therefore, we have seen layering of different insurers providing cover for a certain level of that building.Associated costs“We have seen [that] some of the associated costs of that layering type scheme has seen significant cost for the insured, and, ultimately, the leaseholders who then see those cost premiums passed on. What the scheme is doing is looking to increase the capacity so there is no longer that need for the layering of capacity for each building.“I am not going to lie to you – it is a significant market intervention, and it has been extremely hard work. Our members have been consistently throughout the past year working hard to get this scheme up to speed.“We have been working with McGill & Partners that are leading the development of this specialty scheme. It is important to know that it is only going to be a short-term, time-limited scheme."Ultimately, we are looking to create a sticking plaster while remediation work takes place.“It has been complex. There has been a lot of competition law we have needed to take into account, but we are really pleased with the way it has been developing.”Hughes is joined on the podcast by Matthew Connell, director of policy and public affairs at the Chartered Insurance Institute, who reflects on whether HM Treasury and the Financial Conduct Authority could shake up the rules for how insurance brokers get paid as a result of concerns about the cost of buildings insurance to residential leaseholders and other property owners of multi-occupancy buildings. Jeannette is joined by Neil Fillbrook, one of the most experienced and renowned international bankers in the sector, and a man with over two decades of experience, having worked with such respected names as Royal Sun Alliance and HSBC, and now acts as President and CEO of Bankbrokers Consultancy Group. Neil joins Jeannette to talk about his fascinating career, and what has changed and evolved in the banking industry across the span of his journey, the best advice for companies looking to survive and thrive through tough times, and why we should always look at opportunities with a sense of bravery. KEY TAKEAWAYS When opportunity arises, it's only natural to feel cautious, but we shouldn't let this caution override the positives. All in the incredible paths that open up to us begin with a brave, bold step. Even if you fall flat on your face, you'll still have learned something from the experience. There are no such things as failures - only lessons. A client values trust and support more than anything else. If you can make a client feel as though you are there for them when times get tough, then loyalty will follow. In order to ensure your survival during tougher times, it's necessary to hunker down and cut costs where possible. But we must never over indulge in this practice, and make sure we keep a "helicopter view" of areas in which we should grow or acquire. BEST MOMENTS 'I'll say yes to anything' 'Just think about what if?' 'It's a simple proposition. We're on your side, helping you, and I think clients really like that' 'Don't hunker down too much. Look for the opportunities'   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. On this episode, Sabine VdL interviews Nick Pester. Sabine has known Nick for over 4 years. They met when Nick showed strong interest in the tech startups accepted within Sabine’s accelerator programs and was willing to mentor them with advice when he was leading the Financial Services, Insurance & InsurTech practices at Capital Law. Nick moved from legal advice within a legal firm to becoming the group general of one of the leading InsurTech growth ventures in the UK. He is also an Advisor to the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Centre for Data Ethics & Innovation on Digital Ethics and the use of Artificial Intelligence in Insurance. On this podcast they catch-up to understand what the past 4 years has brought to him in terms of lessons learnt. KEY TAKEAWAYS I fell into insurance, the firm I applied to for a training contract was a media and entertainment specialist, which was something I was interested in at the time – advising big bands on tour around the world! But they had a really strong insurance practice and I really enjoyed the fact that there was a dual-layer to all the legal aspects we dealt with: The insurance layer and the underlying subject matter. My day tends to be partnership focused, there’s always something going on in the partnership front. There’s claims to deal with, but otherwise it’s running around responding to the fires as and when they arise, dealing with them as best you can and trying to have the headspace to look more than a week or a month ahead and think strongly about the strategy of the legal function and the wider business. Law firms and some other businesses tend to be far too fixated on the granularity of academics and qualifications. Of course, you need to be qualified, but actually what turns a good lawyer into a really great lawyer is personality and character. People who can roll with the punches, take something on the chin and move on, most importantly for lawyers, people who can accept being wrong. I don’t think lawyers as a profession are very good at admitting when they’re wrong, but in a startup environment, you need to be prepared to make mistakes, it’s part and parcel of learning. One of the biggest challenges in the insurance market with respect to data and the usage of data is transparency and fairness, which everybody wants to ensure, against commerciality and sensitive information. The most obvious example of this is pricing. The balance between using data to improve our products and services, and to drive greater revenue and growth against how much customers want to know about them. With AI, it’s a very difficult area in the context of regulated activities, because you need to have explainability, why someone has been priced in a certain way. It’s going to be very difficult to build a genuinely self-managing, machine learning intuitive system with the necessary explainability and insight that goes with that. BEST MOMENTS ‘I like flying by the seat of my pants. Today's guest is Sian Fisher. Sian has had an illustrious career in international insurance and this has culminated in a 6-year period as CEO of the UK's well-renowned professional standards and qualifications body the Chartered Insurance Institute (the CII). Sian is a strong and vocal female leader in our sector and in her tenure has been a dynamic and effective agent of change at this venerable trade body. I think it's fair to say that she has shaken things up in this time. Now her departure has been announced I caught up with her to reflect on her modernising work ,the highs and lows of running a high-profile organisation through Brexit and then Covid and her vision for keeping a hitherto very traditional institution relevant in the 21st century. We also discuss things that with hindsight she might have done differently and what the future might hold for this highly experienced senior executive. Sian is great to talk to – she thinks and communicates clearly, she's eloquent, she's never shy and she's always direct. On today's episode, we're excited to be speaking to Paul Smith, Managing Director of Fenchurch Insurance. Paul has over 20 years' experience in the insurance industry and is chatting with us today about his journey, experience and specifically about the Lloyds market too!   LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Every now and again, there'll be an opportunity or a situation whereby a case is either rather large, rather unique, or rather difficult – insurers should prepare for this. Mainstream insurers that have the opportunity and availability to place business with Lloyd's brokers will quote different terms, premiums and access levels. Developing tight knit relationships with your Lloyd's broker is integral to the success of your business. It's very rare to find one Lloyd's broker that has the capability and all the capacity and indeed the relationships to place property, liability and fleet, as well as financial services.   BEST MOMENTS: ‘'…insurers have these red, amber and green lists. Green topical flavour of the month which everybody loves, easy to price. Amber is something that needs a little bit more attention and dedication and a bit more focus by underwriters. The red list is, in the vast majority of cases, something that shows insurers just don't have an appetite for - and it's those situations that a broker would need to walk into Lloyds or utilize the services of a Lloyd's broker.''   ‘'…it's a case of well, how on earth is that possible? Why do insurers not have a central database to record data on risks? Surely, branch A should follow branch B or vice versa. It's just one of the anomalies and one of the vagaries of dealing with a Lloyd's broker and trying to place risks into the London market.''   ‘'if you've looked after somebody and you've given them a good piece of business that's produced profit for the underwriter, then it's quite conceivable that you can pull that favour back when you need it most.''   ‘'My top tip to youngsters that are in the market is just make sure that you put your hands in your pocket and entertain them as much as they entertain you… it will stand the test of time and it will come back and you will get rewarded for that. Don't always take take take.''   ‘'Find out who other brokers use, listen and understand and hear about the good, the bad, the ugly in terms of relationships and service… Have they got any delegated authority binders? How long have the brokers been employed by that particular Lloyd's broker? I think it's important to find out the pedigree and history.''   RESOURCES: Fenchurch Insurance website: https://fenchurchinsurance.com/ Paul's Linkedin Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-smith-insurance-broker-and-advisor-22384718/   ABOUT THE GUEST Paul Smith is the Managing Director at Fenchurch Insurance Brokers Limited - responsible for all things clients, compliance, sales and marketing and growth. He calls on his time mentoring young people entering the industry as a driving force behind wanting to create the museum and have somewhere for people to learn about the rich history of the insurance market. "Insurance is such a key part of London and there is a nowhere for the history to be on display and the stories to be told".Reg explains that the first fundraising campaign for the establishment of the Insurance Museum started on the 7th September and will run until 7th December with the aim of raising £3 million, which will cover the property and running costs for 4 years. On today's episode, we're talking about EATT – the Education and Training Trust that Chartered Insurance Institute have recently launched alongside The Insurance Charities. Teaming up with The Insurance Charities means that CII can help those that are struggling with financial hardship due to the impact of the pandemic within the industry. The need for training and development has never been greater than this current time. The importance of a grant making charity is to look after the assets and use them to benefit society and the beneficiaries.   BEST MOMENTS: ‘'…In response to COVID, the charity [EATT] decided they wanted to help those people within the profession who's suffering from financial hardship, in order for them to be able to pursue their studies, training and gain qualifications during this time. Particularly, we wanted to help those who may be redundant or on furlough and those who may be suffering business collapse, or who have a particular concern about their finances at this time due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic.'' ‘'We thought they would be the ideal partners for this project [The Insurance Charities] because not only would they be able to administer the grant that's been made for professionals suffering hardship because of COVID, but those people who need further assistance beyond the need for professional development and training, perhaps they have, you know, specific needs. ‘'…this kind of break that some of us have experienced is the perfect opportunity to re-skill and why is it important for the profession to do that? The ultimate aim is to improve outcomes for customers. That's the whole purpose of CII.'' ‘'…the COVID-19 situation presented an opportunity to cut through all the formalities and processes that were embarked on now, to operationalise the charity and start making grants because, the problem came up, we have to find a solution quickly, we were able to do that, and we're able to make grants which was fantastic.''   RESOURCES: The Insurance Charities Website: https://www.theinsurancecharities.org.uk/ CII Website: https://www.cii.co.uk/   ABOUT THE HOST Sarah Myerscough is the Sales and Marketing Director of Boston Tullis Group. What would insurance, and our wider financial system, look like if it were designed to fit its purpose? “Shining a spotlight on our financial system reveals a number of imperfections. It is no more efficient than it was a century ago. It is subject to serial crises. It is uneven in providing good long-term governance of corporations and other assets. It is disconnected from the needs of its ultimate capital providers – meaning us. And the economic theories that are embedded as its operating assumptions reflect only one facet of the world in which the industry operates.”* The current pandemic has increased the perception of a financial industry disconnected from the needs of its ultimate capital providers. Yet, the situation is not irretrievable, especially if there is a desire to change and improve. This webinar will explore some of the current ‘disconnects' in insurance, explore what the ‘purpose' of insurance might be, consider elements that might require redesign, and touch on thoughts of a new public-private compact. On today's episode, we're chatting to CEO of PIB Group, Brendan McManus. Brendan has over 42 year's experience at senior level across both insurance and broking. Brendan shares with us his varied career history and talks to us about some of the challenges he's faced. We also discuss why Brendan thinks it's important to have both long term and short term planning in place and how he thinks the economy will recover from the pandemic. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The lockdown has made insurance industry businesses more efficient and better serviceable with technology and improved processes. Starting with the end in mind is how you write a convincible, achievable and compelling plan. Having a solid business based on culture allows entrepreneurial people to get back to what they're good at which is focusing on clients. There's a big difference between insurance and broking rather than just being one sector. One sells a product, the other sells a service. The great thing about the insurance broking sector is the immediacy. The sector can do something today that will improve results. A question we should continuously ask ourselves when planning is: ‘'what do I need to do today to achieve my long term goal?''. Since the pandemic, our attitude both in work and personal life, to technology has changed dramatically and traditional working environments will be a thing of the past. BEST MOMENTS: ‘'…having a plan and sticking to it has always been a core part of how I've managed myself really, I think you have to be driven by something. My drive is always write a plan and stick to it. Could you say you're going to do something by the end of 2019? …You get up in the morning and you say, what am I going to do today that gets me to that plan in 2019? You don't wait till the end of 2019, the last quarter, and start acting on it, you do it every day.'' ‘'…our whole goal has been to take the administration and the management and the governance away from vendors and let them look after their clients and to do what they've always been really good at, which is grow their businesses entrepreneurially. What got in the way as they grew their businesses was administration, management, HR and regulation… and we take responsibility for that. They get back to their core, which is servicing clients and so the whole business has been based on freeing people up to go back to what they really good at which is focusing on the clients.'' ‘'…a lot of people talk about the being an insurance sector. I don't think there is. I think there's the insurance companies that provide a product and they are balance sheet businesses. They get up in the morning worrying about protecting the balance sheet, whereas insurance broking distribution tends to be about people. It tends to be about hiring and retaining really good people who can sell and service their clients so it's not a uniform sector… they have very, very different goals.'' ‘'I think overall, people benefit not just from the formal training, but from the sponsorship and just the environment they work in.''
