The people that are found were either lost, made the conscious decision to leave, or were taken. The case we are covering today is over 20 years old. Every two years, since 1951, the United Nations has compiled data and estimates about the world's population. These are contained in a report called World Population Prospects, which provides our best estimates about global population and demographic trends. The latest edition of World Population Prospects was released in June, and joining me today is one of the people responsible for putting this report together. John Wilmoth is Director of the Population Division at the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. He last joined us two years ago after the previous iteration of this report was released. We will discuss what has changed, or not, from the estimates of two years ago, why we should be paying attention to rapidly aging populations in East Asia, and what we mean by the "demographic dividend" that many countries in Africa are poised to harness.

Associations of semaglutide with incidence and recurrence of alcohol use disorder in real-world population Nature Communications In this retrospective cohort study of patients receiving medication for treatment of obesity, the authors evaluated the association of semaglutide with incidence of and recurrence of alcohol use disorder (AUD). In the cohort patients received semaglutide or non-GLP1RA medications, including naltrexone and topiramate. In matched cohort analysis, patients who received semaglutide had much lower rates of incident AUD (HR=0.5) compared to those receiving non-GLP1RA medications and in sub-analysis comparing semaglutide to naltrexone/topiramate the also had lower incident AUD (HR=0.44). Among those with a history of AUD, semaglutide was also associated with lower recurrence of AUD (HR=0.44) overall and in sub-analysis (HR=0.25). These findings support potential benefit of semaglutide for AUD in a real-world population and need for randomized clinical trials.   Read this issue of the ASAM Weekly Subscribe to the ASAM Weekly Visit ASAM

She is currently the chief executive officer of the Clean Cooking Alliance, and recently led international corporate engagement with the World Wildlife Fund's Climate & Energy team. She sits down with host Scott Gale '19 to unpack her impressive career, her experience working internationally, developing an early appreciation for the Chinese language and culture, and her passion for the energy transition and climate initiatives.Episode Guide:00:56 Dymphna's Early Life and Education04:55 Dymphna's Journey to China14:24 Career Path and Mentorship16:38 Focus on Renewables and Alternative Energy18:42 Dymphna's Role in the Clinton Climate Initiative20:24 Journey to Working with a Former U.S. President20:49 The Future of Energy: Opportunities and Challenges20:49 The Importance of Diverse Energy Solutions22:01 The Role of Renewable Energy in Corporate Operations23:28 Addressing Energy Challenges in Island Nations25:08 The Mission of the Clean Cooking Alliance27:53 The Future of Clean Cooking and Energy Systems29:31 Predictions for China's Role in Global Energy31:12 Advice for Prospective Rice Business StudentsOwl Have You Know is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:26:01: My organization [Clean Cooking Alliance], we're about 50 people. We work with a whole bunch of different partners to make sure that countries in the Global South are thinking about how they're transitioning to access to clean cooking. We're already providing these solutions to help them continue to grow. We work with the governments directly. We work with, sort of, adjacent ecosystems to help them think about what it means to have access to clean cooking and how you think about clean cooking projects. It's fantastic work. It gets ignored all too often because for people, it doesn't feel like an energy issue. It's a household issue. It mostly impacts women. So, it often gets overlooked. And my job is to make sure it doesn't and it gets funding. On being comfortable with  different cultures and working in different countries10:02: I've just realized that I enjoy figuring stuff out and finding myself in new places, just like trying to really quickly understand how the system works, how people work, and how I operate most effectively and efficiently in a different context that is not my own. And I'm very comfortable doing that.Finding power in peer mentoring conversations15:43: I found the real true power and honesty to be in those peer mentoring conversations. And when you do those, be explicit about it; this is not just like a friend or friends talking about something over a coffee. It is actually a fundamental question that you're wanting other people to filter back to you or mirror back to you that maybe hindering you in your projection or your ability to execute or balancing your life as a mother has always been a big question for me as well. And for a long time, I was raising my daughter by myself. So those conversations are so important. And I would encourage anybody to seek those out and be really thoughtful about them, ask good questions, and really listen and reflect back on what that means for you and in a position of leadership. On Dymphna's Rice experience13:24: There's a thing about trusting your instincts and your gut, and my ability to sense what's happening in a room and in the system. Like I had the language to apply that to different situations that I didn't have before. I always had the feeling that I was understanding it, but I never had the language to actually articulate what I was seeing or even articulate a vision for how to work through things.Show Links: TranscriptGuest Profile:Dymphna van der Lans - UN Foundation//Chief Executive Officer Clean Cooking Alliance Dymphna van der Lans | unfoundation.org

These Are the Major Global Demographic Trends as the World Population Hits 8 Billion

On November 15, the world population officially surpassed 8 billion people, according to United Nations estimates. The milestone was reached just 12 years after the world marked 7 billion people, and it is projected that global population will hit 9 billion people by 2037 So what are the key demographic trends driving population growth? Where is population growing fastest? Where is it declining? And what do the age structures of populations around the world tell us about the future of our planet? To answer these questions, we are joined by John Wilmoth, head of the Population Division at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social affairs.  We kick off with a brief history of population growth and with a discussion of the so-called demographic transition, which is the long process in which populations steadily live longer and have few children.

Wolfgang Lutz is one of the world's experts in projecting global population levels and demography. I contacted him to help understand the differences between projections based on demography like his and the United Nations' versus systemic ones like in Limits to Growth. He gave a comprehensive overview of who projects and how, at least as much as can be covered in under an hour. Some highlights:Who projects based on demography: the UN, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and the Wittgenstein Center, among others. He described what and how demographers project: Assumptions, methods, variables of age, sex, education, migration, fertility rate, mortality rate. He consistently repeated the importance of education. On Limits to Growth, he pointed out that systems analyses include feedback mechanisms, but their demographics tend to be less sophisticated, for example lacking age structure or effects of education. Demographers don't take them seriously because of their oversimplification.I asked how demographers include feedback. He described a few ways, including asking experts and translate their responses into different scenarios. What about big events like fish or aquifers depleting? He pointed out extreme events are hard to predict, though humanity's historical resilience suggests we'll figure out ways to level their effects. Demographers also include probabilistic models for tipping points, disease, and such, and report levels of variance. The results of his research and projections: Human population peaking somewhere around 2080 at around 10 billion then declining. It may reach about 3 to 4 billion by 2200, which could be long-term sustainable, though the transition is uncertain. Humanity could reach a healthy, wealthy, more equal, more resilient, and well educated future, but not given.Potential problems: heat waves, drought, floods, sea level rise. Humans can solve to some degree, but we have to prepare. What to focus on: since population changes slowly, behavior, technology, and migration first, then education especially of women in the long term since its effects happen more slowly. Also family planning, women's health, contraception, and sexual equality. We covered a lot, though scratched the surface, gives understandable overview of demographics and global population projections.I put greater weight on difficult-to-predict extreme uncertain events. At least I'd make the uncertainty go down more than the symmetry I see, but our conversation was about learning and understanding, not debate. I've learned a lot each time I've listened to this episode. It's dense with information, but on an important subject.Wolfgang's page at the International Institute for Applied Systems AnalysisTwo of his major papers explaining how he models global population growthThe end of world population growth, Nature, 2001Dimensions of global population projections: what do we know about future population trends and structures?, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2010Executive summary of his book World Population and Human Capital in the Twenty-First Century Hosted on Acast. To break it down, 8 billion humans in 2022 means there's 8 times more humans today than there was in 1800. The average birth rates today are of 2.3 births per woman, which is lower than it was before the 50s, but still far too high given the longevity of us humans today and the medical advancements. Where are we headed though? What does the science say ? Btw, 8 billion is an approximate number. In reality, I reckon we're far more than that. So many people in rural areas are unaccounted for, millions of people, perhaps even a billion ? Let's talk about it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/claritywithteekay/message
