On today's episode, once again, it's OpenAI and DOGE. And some other things! Nilay and David start the show by talking about Elon Musk's surprise bid to buy the nonprofit arm of OpenAI, along with the company's plans for new models and new rules for those models. After that, The Verge's Lauren Feiner joins to catch us up on what's happening with DOGE, how Musk and co. are making boring government information into something deeply fascinating and deeply confusing, and what it's like to work for the government now. Finally, in the lightning round, we talk about rumors of a new Apple Studio Display and iPhone SE, the new Powerbeats 2 Pro, Brendan Carr still being a dummy, and some surprising streaming moves from Apple and YouTube.

For the first time maybe ever, New York reminded me of LA. It was a beautiful space in almost entirely gentrified Brooklyn, though I wasn't the only brown face— the Adidas running club was hosting a clean-up at Public Records—a beautiful event space, which boasted, upon entry and investigation, two turntables, 2 CDJs, and some strange mixer I had never seen before. The knobs and buttons were in foregn places, but not altogether unfamiliar— it would be an adjustment, but a welcome one. The buttons were large and smooth looking, but having sneaked into the corner to view the booth in almost secret, I quietly only admired the setup, and in my dream world, would have something much of the same in my own apartment one day, perhaps even soon. It was my second time in the exact neighborhood that week, and a it seemed like a sure sign—it was always CC a DJ something, somewhere, and I was always a DJ—however, today it was more than music that had made the call—Adidas Running be a club had piqued my fancy, and although I had showed up proudly and promptly on time, to busily chattering socialites, all without an once of fat to spare between the handful of them. Dressed in all black and clutching my skateboard in one hand and my book and high liter in the other, another mix blared through the singular earbud of my Powerbeats, just having left Equinox for the second time in 24 hours—still, I was out of place, as I found my way promptly to the nursery, full of desert plants I personified primped as if they were my very own, waiting in the court yard for the festivities to begin, bedazzled by the runners bodies who had always been running and reflecting on my measley one-mile-a-day—but more recently two, of course, which felt like forever. {Enter The Multiverse} [The Festival Project.™] COPYRIGHT © THE FESTIVAL PROJECT 2023 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. © -U.
30 Years HAMdj (NL) 1993-2023 - Part 05 (HAMdj - Pre-lennium 1997-2000) This month i grabbed the vinyls from the New-School era. Around 1997 a lot of tracks got slower and this started the path to the beloved Millennium sound. The Pre-Lennium, a name i made up for the sound. The new sound was fresh and hard. To bad that in this period the party's where more and more about fighting instead of raving. But in the end the sound survived. In this mix i play some hit's combined with some forgotten jerms. Tracks from labels as Babyboom Records, Dwarf, Re-Fuse, Traxtorm Records, ID&T and others. If you are in to the sound just sit back and enjoy the ride! Tracklist: 01. Miro - Shining [ACA002/12] 02. Finally went to target and bought what I went in for and left with what I went in for - I am now a proud trendy owner of AirPods pros. Powerbeats pros still hold a larger space in my heart - not up for debate. They're superior. I also had a good deed moment happen at target which turned out to be a huge sign and a full circle moment. I talk about motherhood and the chapters it brings and how do we know when to end a chapter in our Motherhood books?

Omar Johnson served as CMO of Beats by Dre, VP Marketing at Apple, and account lead at Nike. Today he is the founder of Opus United, which most recently launched the content series "We The People" to fight for social change. Famously as CMO of Beats, Omar helped grow a $20 million company into a $1.6 billion dollar category leader, becoming the #1 premium headphone in 21 countries. In 2013, Adweek named Omar a “Brand Genius.” In 2016, Business Insider named him one of the “Most Innovative CMOs” for social media branding efforts including the “Straight Outta Somewhere” campaign, which reached over a billion people worldwide. He also led groundbreaking campaigns including #ShowYourColor, Powerbeats starring LeBron James, and The Pills featuring Chris Rock and Eminem. His use of viral marketing and influencers helped expand Beats into venues like the Olympics, Super Bowl, World Cup and NBA Finals. Omar’s success as CMO culminated in 2014, when Beats was purchased by Apple for $3 billion. Prior to Beats, Omar was at Nike, where he produced memorable TV commercials like “Rise,” starring LeBron James, and “The Most Valuable Puppets”. He also built the Nike+ sports music platform, establishing Nike’s first revenue-generating relationship with record labels. Today in addition to running Opus United, he is an investor, keynote speaker and marketing coach. In June of 2020, with the nation facing a reckoning on race, Omar personally took out a full page ad in The New York Times titled “My Open Letter to White Corporate America.”

Kind of a lack luster event unless you were waiting for the new Apple Watch Series 6 or SE or an iPad in Sky Blue. Raqi, Serina and Jeff dig in and give their opinions and share some experiences with the iOS14 features. Jeff having beta tested for some time brought his unique perspective while Raqi dove deep into the Air Bud Pros, while Serina talked continuously about October. Hmm. Below is a list of topics covered in this deep dive into the Apple Orchard minus a few iPhone Apples. Hmm. Jeff gives a few demos, Voice Recognition and Precise and Approximate Location Settings. iOS14: What iPhones get all the latest and greatest features? iPhone 10R and newer including the SE 2020 Accessibility VoiceOver Recognition On-device intelligence recognizes key elements displayed on your screen to add VoiceOver support for app and web experiences that don’t have accessibility support built in. Image descriptions VoiceOver reads complete-sentence descriptions of images and photos within apps and on the web. Text recognition VoiceOver speaks the text it identifies within images and photos. Screen recognition VoiceOver automatically detects interface controls to aid in navigating your apps, making them more accessible. Headphone Accommodations This new accessibility feature is designed to amplify soft sounds and adjust certain frequencies for an individual’s hearing, to help music, movies, phone calls, and podcasts sound more crisp and clear.12 Headphone Accommodations also supports Transparency mode on AirPods Pro, making quiet voices more audible and tuning the sounds of your environment to your hearing needs. Sound Recognition Sound Recognition uses on-device intelligence to notify users who might otherwise miss audible environmental alerts around them. On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, users receive a notification when a particular type of sound or alert, such as a fire alarm or doorbell, is detected. Back Tap Built to create a simple and easy way to trigger convenient tasks for those with accessibility needs. A quick double or triple tap on the back of your iPhone can be configured to trigger a number of actions, such as opening the Magnifier, or starting VoiceOver when your iPhone is in your pocket. It can even map to common system features such as Control Center, or accessibility-specific activities such as Switch Control actions. Sign language prominence FaceTime can now detect when a participant is using sign language and make the person prominent in a Group FaceTime call. Widgets Add widgets to keep important information front and center. Touch any app icon, then flick up until you hear, “edit mode”, and single-finger double tap the Add Widget button located at the top left-hand corner of the screen. Choose a widget in the gallery, then choose a size. The smaller sizes take up less space and provide less info as opposed to the large size. The space the widget takes up moves the overflo to the next page and not incorporating them into the next page that was previously there. Nice, as when you get rid of the widget, all springs back to normal. You can stack the widgets. Smart Stack Widget The Smart Stack shows you relevant information throughout the day — like the weather forecast or route to your next event. Choose Smart Stack from the widget list. You can edit what is in the smart stack by single-finger double tapping on the widget while in edit mode. Change order or delete a particular choice. App Library To see all your apps neatly categorized, 3-finger swipe left on the Home Screen until you see the App Library. It is the last page. Apps are sorted into groups, such as Recently Added and Social. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Each category will say how many apps are in the folder and the apps will be in an A-Z format. Reply to a specific message: In a group conversation in the messages app, you can single double tap a hold on any message and respond to that particular message. After single-finger double tapping, flick up or down to your desired option of copy, reply or respond with emoji like thumbs up. Pinning conversations: Up to 9 conversations Group photos: Give your group conversation a visual identity by adding a photo or Memoji, or choose an emoji. Send audio messages: When you want to be more expressive in your messages, you can now easily send audio messages with Siri. Password monitoring: Safari securely monitors your saved passwords to ensure that they have not been compromised in a data breach. To do this, Safari uses strong cryptographic techniques to regularly check derivations of your passwords against a list of breached passwords in a secure and private way that doesn’t reveal your password information — even to Apple. Air Pod Pros Spatial Audio Go to Bluetooth settings, swipe down to air pod pros, flick up to more info, and go down to Spatial Audio. Bring surround sound where ever you go! Headphone Accommodations, Hear sounds that may need some tweaking for better hearing situations. Movies, phone, music. Automatic switching Seamlessly move between devices without manually switching your AirPods. If you finish a phone call on your iPhone and pick up your iPad to watch a movie, AirPods automatically switch over. Works with AirPods Pro, AirPods (2nd generation), EarPods, Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, and Beats Solo Pro. Audio Sharing for Apple TV Connect two sets of AirPods to your Apple TV 4K so you can enjoy movies and shows with someone else without disturbing others. Works with AirPods Pro, AirPods (1st generation) or later, Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, Beats Solo Pro, Powerbeats3 Wireless, Beats Solo3 Wireless, Beats Studio3 Wireless, and BeatsX. Requires tvOS 14. Upgrade to Sign in with Apple Easily switch to Sign in with Apple when logging in to participating apps. You’ll keep the account you already use, but have one less password to keep track of. Approximate location Share only your approximate location rather than your exact location — perfect for apps like local news or weather. Augmented reality. ARKit 4 introduces Location Anchors, allowing developers to place AR experiences, like life‑size art installations or navigational directions, at a specific point in the world. Add captions to photos Open photo, swipe down to photo then flick up to show details, from the top swipe down to add a caption. Voice Memos. The most popular audio recording app in the world gets new tools for organizing recordings. An all‑new Enhance Recording feature lets you improve the sound quality of your recordings with a single tap. Open recording, tap on play and then tap on enhance. Removes background/floor noise. Then save. Can save files to folders. The economic crisis stemming from the coronavirus pandemic has hit countries all over the world, costing millions of jobs and putting a freeze on a lot of non-essential spending, like upgrading your old phone or computer. Apple knows this, and that’s presumably why it’s reportedly planning to launch an installment program for its products. Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning to roll out this monthly installment program—which will be tied to its Apple Card credit card, issued by Goldman Sachs—over the next few weeks. The service will let customers buy a product through Apple and split the cost over several months with interest-free payments. The Bloomberg report states that Apple will offer a 12-month, interest-free payment plan for iPads, Macs, Apple Pencils, iPad keyboards, and Mac XDR Display monitors. Meanwhile, AirPods, Apple TVs, and HomePods will be offered at zero interest for six months. The program aims to increase enrollment for the Apple Card and boost sales of Apple products by letting users split the cost over time, according to Bloomberg report. Installment payments will be added to a customer’s monthly Apple Card bill and will be managed through the Wallet app. Of course, Apple isn’t the only company that offers payment installment programs to pay for products. Cell phone carriers also offer this service. However, Apple’s program would allow customers to use an installment plan to pay for a wide variety of its products. Apple, like many companies, has been impacted economically by the coronavirus pandemic. In February, it announced that it did not expect to meet its own revenue guidance for the March quarter because the worldwide iPhone supply had been temporarily constrained by the health crisis. This also affected demand for its products in China, Apple said. “In this difficult environment, our users are depending on Apple products in renewed ways to stay connected, informed, creative, and productive. We feel motivated and inspired to not only keep meeting these needs in innovative ways, but to continue giving back to support the global response,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the announcement of the company’s second quarter results. Apple also hasn’t stopped releasing new products during the health crisis. The company has launched its new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard, Powerbeats, and the iPhone SE. And we still haven’t seen the new iPhone 12 that’s expected this fall. If any of those gadgets sound appealing to you, rest assured, as it appears Apple is making every effort to make sure you can still buy them one way or another. [Bloomberg]

This week, the Fitbit Charge 4 has launched and Pocket-lint's editor Chris joins host Stuart to discuss the new fitness tracker. It add GPS for the first time, so is a big deal for Fitbit. Also, as part of Pocket-lint's Sustainability Month, Stuart chats with the co-founder of Forest Carbon, Stephen Prior, about how we can all plant many more trees to offset our carbon footprints and help save the planet. And finally, our contributing editor Cam Bunton gives us his verdict on the all-new Beats Powerbeats wireless earphones. While we have your attention, we also want to tell you about our plant a tree initiative we've launched: Pocket-lint has teamed up with Resideo - the new home of Honeywell Home - to plant trees in your name for free. We've already planted 1,000 trees, but we want to plant 3,000 more with your help and on your behalf. If we can reach our target of 3,000 trees, it will mean we're offsetting around 900 carbon tonnes. That's the equivalent of over 1,000 return flights from Los Angeles to London, or the average CO2 a family of four uses over 150 years! To help us help the environment, all you have to do is tell us the Mac address of a Honeywell smart thermostat that is active in your home or office. The thermostat can be already installed and being used or completely new - but it must be active and you must tell us before the end of April (30 April 2020).You can find out more details here.01:51 - Chris and Stuart talk Fitbit Charge 407:06 - Stephen Prior interview20:41 - Cam reviews the Beats Powerbeats headphonesVisit us at pocket-lint.com, check out our latest videos at youtube.com/pocketlintcom and sign up to our daily newsletter at pocket-lint.com/info/newsletter. *** Please also take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods.
