Ben and Norah are on deck for the first show of 2024! Ben does something a little different to start out this year… a game review! The game is… … Outerloop Games' sophomore release “Thirsty Suitors,” and in an effort to quench, Ben has a big bucket of opinions he's going to dump on us. He starts by explaining his assessment method (which will be discussed in more detail on a forthcoming show) and then gets in the weeds with sharing his critique of TS's aesthetics, game mechanics, and story. Ben also provides 3 examples of what the game does well and 3 examples of what needs improvement. Norah unintentionally closes the show with a SICK BURN! 00:00:21 - Norah compliments Andrew, buys new things, and reviews "The Maestro" in brief 00:02:37 - Thirsty, UK slang, based on context, Annapurna, and Outerloop's mission statement 00:05:07 - Falcon Age summary, Thirsty Suitors described, and Norah's impressions of trailer 00:07:51 - Jala's introduction / summary / prologue, and Ben explains his review structure FORMULA Aesthetics (A) + Game Mechanics (GM) + Story and Narrative (SN) = a video game experience Ben's importance percentages = 20% A + 35% GM + 45% SN Aesthetics (A) 00:10:32 - Ben's audio / video / aesthetics score is 10/10, and Norah's assessment from trailer Game Mechanics (GM) 00:12:21 - First, Thirsty Suitor's skateboarding game mechanics 00:13:16 - Second, a description of QTEs and how cooking works in Thirsty Suitors 00:17:29 - Third, a detailed breakdown of how turn based battles work in Thirsty Suitors Story and Narrative (SN) 00:23:32 - Finally, the story and narrative in Ben's words followed by Norah's questions Three Positives 00:27:24 - For the first 6 hours of gameplay the synthesis of the game mechanics, the striking visuals, and the compelling story combine to make a near perfect gaming experience. 00:27:59 - The game has well written dialogue, powerful emotional moments, and contains authentic portrayals of LGBTQ+ and S. Asian experiences. 00:28:22 - The amazing aesthetics and style are a tribute to the love and effort the developers poured into this game. Three Negatives 00:28:35 - Feels unfinished in a number of ways. There are only 5 super moves and only 2 of the 5 are exes. The level meter maxes out at 31 but it continues to appear like it is filling after each subsequent battle has concluded. There is a beautiful, but unnecessary map screen which gives one the impression that there would be much more to explore. 00:30:23 - The story has an “identity crisis” at the midpoint of the game and doesn't commit to develop any of the storylines as significantly as the first 6 hours did. Additionally some story details don't make sense logically or are counter to what you would expect that characters would have learned. 00:34:25 - South Asian cultural and historical exploration is not comprehensive as expected from Outerloop based on the statement at their website. Side note: please include the recipes next time. Wrap-up Discussion 00:35:59 - When A's turn (based on a true story), design creep, skateboarding, and Aggretsuko 00:40:03 - In retrospect not a great look, conflict resolution, Jala's arc, and Rob in High Fidelity 00:43:13 - Meaningful stories, sales techniques, T.S. Eliot quote, and agreeing to a point 00:48:30 - Ben nitpicks the title and tagline, succinct, and Norah's unintentional “sick burn” 00:51:04 - An apology, on a tear, global warming, mayonnaise, and an official close. Ben's FINAL VERDICT on Thirsty Suitors aka the MATH! (10 * .20) + (6 * .35) + (6 * .45) = 6.8 out of 10… things. DO BUY… if you want to support marginalized voices in game design (and companies like Outerloop and Annapurna). DO PLAY… if you are new to JRPG style games and want an introduction to how those types of game mechanics work. DO PLAY… if you would be satisfied with 5-6 hours (out the 12 hours it took Ben to thoroughly explore and complete the game) of super solid, amazingly crafted gameplay. Here's a romp of an episode: Amelia and Keenan's UK travel itineraries overlapped a couple of months ago, and they're here to regale you with tales of filming locations seen (Bridgerton! Sense and Sensibility! Fleabag! After a false start on a topic better suited for our patreon, we begin this episode with an apology and end with a fresh grudge on the books. Gabby and Harper-Rose read listener submitted stories on resentments between friends and lovers, against pastors and strangers. The through line seems to be DRAGGING Lee and just learning how to put the water down! Send your stories to TeaTimeStories42069@gmail.com CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR PATREON! The honks make up after a cute little fight at honk headquarters. After a quick, fun and light discussion about mental illness and homelessness, Gabby and Harper-Rose loop it back to the ever present topic of Addiction Stories. Listeners wrote in about SLAA love triangles, ramping up use over the pandemic, health issues, and the rock bottoms that have helped turn their lives around. Thank you for listening! Hey, y'all - Oh my goodness we got Amelia's mother, Marlo, to join us so we could talk to them both about Amelia's relationship (obsession?) with the 1995 Gwyneth Paltrow 'Emma!" It's a great ride - please enjoy. Lots of love, Julie, Allison, and ...the Marlos
It's Harper-Rose's Birthday episode, and what an episode it is! After some standup talk and d*ck measuring, the head honks dive in to their own virginity stories. Then, we read your truly haunted ass stories and ::TRIGGER WARNING:: not all are exceptionally consensual. Listener submissions were a little sidetracked this week. You guys used some worst date stories to explain their green and red flags, but you KNOW we're here for it. After trying to get to the bottom of Dorito Gate; Gabby and Harper-Rose read your stories about dating older men, arrogant baddies, unwanted kinks, and sexy German accents (???). Hi, y'all - Amelia takes the reins as we chat about the second half of Gwyneth Paltrow's 1996 film adaptation of "Emma." Some things that come up: - Why the podcast has ruined Amelia's life - Extended discussion of our new favorite butthole - A great new nickname for a main character that we really think has legs Please enjoy! Lots of love, Julie, Alison, Janine and Amelia
Hey, y'all - Here begins our content on one of the 1996 adaptations of "Emma." We're of course starting with the one starring Gwyneth Paltrow. In this episode, we discuss the first half of the film, right up until Jane Fairfax shows Emma what's up dueling pianos-style. Did you know that friend of the show Amelia Buzzell has seen this move well over 1,000 times? She's got some love for and THOUGHTS about it, so listen up. Lots of love - Julie, Allison, Janine and Amelia
In this episode Marc and Kristina discuss the origins of anonymous speech through fake identities, the use of sock puppets and alt accounts online, and how trolling works. Digressions include killing bugs, free speech, some sick burns on a cat-loving community, women who troll, and RIP trolling. Come along for the ride. Hi, y'all - If you know anything about us, it's that we CANNOT RESIST a bracket. So here we are, building a bracket and fighting it all the way through to a winner for The Platinum Pooper of 'Imbibe and Prejudice: Volume One.' You really get to hear how the sausage is made, folks. Please enjoy. Lots of love - Julie, Allison, and Janine
Hi, y'all - In the (not so) grand tradition of Julie's other podcast Maria, Solved!, we put Janine in the hot seat and treat him as an expert in Jane Austen's Emma. Come for the Regency comedy of manners, stay for the treatise on slaughterhouse conditions. Lots of love - Julie, Allison, and Janine
Hi, y'all - We're almost done with our first volume (there will always be more PP) of Pride and Prejudice coverage. So it's time to pull out Julie's chainmail ball sack/dice bag of destiny and let fate decide the best of the best. We're saving Darcy and Lizzie for later, but you'll hear debates about other characters, costumes, adaptation, etc. Please enjoy and remember to hit us up with your suggestions for next time when we crown The Platinum Pooper, AKA the Golden-est of Buttholes. Lots of love - Julie, Allison, and Janine
We've reached the end of our coverage of the 2005 Joe Wright/Keira Knightley PP. Spoiler - we love it! Allison is out this week, but friend of the show Amelia Buzzell joins us as we give this PP the Scales treatment. Pro tip: this episode contains a story told by Amelia that is so good, you need to be sitting down when she starts. Lots of love - Julie, Allison, and Janine
Hey y'all, It's the second-to-last installment of Keirafest (though there will be a bit of a wait for the next one) and we are downright giddy to be joined by critic LaToya Ferguson. LaToya joins us for a spirited conversation about the period drama movie dominance of one Keira Knightley. We also talk about her Love, Actually hat. Also: In New York? Come join us for a panel at NYCC! Lots of love, Allison, Julie and Janine
Hey y'all, Let's talk about bonnets, baby! We're just tickled to say that Emma Fraser has returned to the show for our discussion of the costumes in Joe Wright's PP (which, let's be honest, is really mostly a discussion of the green dress in Atonement.) Also, we're so excited to say we're doing a panel at New York Comic Con! Our panel is Saturday night. If you're vaccinated, we'd love to see you. We'll also be paneling at Wizard World Chicago, but more on that later. Lots of love, Allison, Julie and Janine
Hey y'all, Maybe you thought we couldn't do an hour-long episode about roughly 39 seconds of a movie. If so... why? We did a whole series of episodes about one single episode of Wishbone. Anyway, here are our thoughts on the hottest piece of inaccurately-named hand-acting (hacting?), with *invaluable* insights from our special guest, Sarah Marrs of LaineyGossip. Next week: costumes, baybeeeeee! Lots of love, Allison, Julie, and Janine

Hey y'all, Enclosed please find our rapturous coverage of the second half of this movie, which, as the youths say, SLAPS. Next week: ALL HANDFLEX ALL THE TIME! Lots of love, Allison, Julie, and Janine
Hey y'all, Enclosed within please find our thoughts on the first half of Joe Wright's 2005 stone-cold classic Pride & Prejudice adaptation. This is a weird episode - we slipped sideways into another universe, maybe? Anyway, hands, they were flexed. Enjoy. Lots o' love, Allison, Julie, and Janine
Hey y'all, And so begins KEIRAFEST, which is what we're calling our coverage of another formidable PP: Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation, starring Mme. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. It's a good 'un. Allison has seen it. Janine has seen it. Julie has not. Sounds like a decent excuse to rip off Julie's podcast Maria, Solved! if ever we heard one. Lots of love, Julie, Allison, and Janine
We're talking about sunburn (and how it always turns into a nice tan), fake tan and – eek – sunbeds in this week's episode, in honour of the millions of Irish people who are undoubtedly burnt to a crisp after the record-breaking weather of the past few weeks.Beatrice is talking about the special-occasion fake tan, while Rosemary's confessing all about her sordid sunbed-laden past – and it didn't occur to either of us to question why it is that Irish people are quite so obsessed with painting themselves a slightly mucky shade of orange. We'll leave that to the philosophers. Please! Tread Perilously enters the realm of ABC's TGIF sitcom block with its first series, Perfect Strangers and the seventh season episode "The Gazebo." Balki and Larry's attempts to build a gazebo in the back yard remind their wives of a famous comedy duo from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Balki and Larry transform into Laurel and Hardy in a bizarre simulacrum devoid of humor. Faces get smashed, concrete gets poured and the construction project seemingly goes awry. Hilarity does not ensue. Erik and Justin stare into the heart of darkness. Justin learns about Perfect Strangers key role in turning Friday into a family comedy night on ABC. Erik offers his first thoughts on Anson Mount as Star Trek: Discovery's Captain Christopher Pike. It leads to a digression about Star Trek. The pair end up watching the first episode of Perfect Strangers to figure out why "The Gazebo" was devoid of anything funny. Some classic comedy rules are defined while the fictional island of Mypos is explored. Erik co-opts a certain famous catchphrase to prove a point. An attempt at an Alfred Hitchcock impression fails miserably while Erik and Justin try to determine if Laurel and Hardy were actually funny. The ancient art of the Sick Burn returns and The Simpsons episode "Cape Feare" is praised as the pinnacle of half-hour comedy.
Your hosts Sara (@sarasorrentino) and Alex (@tweetnandez) attempt to forgive Mr. Dark Knight himself, Christopher Nolan and his final entry in his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Is this take on the Tale of Two Cities set in Gotham a bit too much? Is it Bane’s fault? Is it Catwoman’s fault? Is it YOUR fault, somehow? Sara and Alex get to the bottom of all this, plus they talk video games, Pokémon, and, of course, Spider-Man 3. And remember: It’s Lord of the Rings, grandma.
Hello and welcome back toEquity, TechCrunch's venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. This week was a treat. We had Danny Crichton in the studio. Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. This week was a treat. We had Danny Crichton in the studio. We had Connie Loizos in the studio. I was in the studio. And our guest, the excellent Andy McLoughlin, a partner at UnCork Capital, was in the studio as well. Thus it was with much enthusiasm that we first got to talk about the latest Elon Musk tweet to move Tesla's stock, causing the famous CEO's best-known company even more self-inflicted damage. What a mess. Happily, we had a whole show planned out before that happened, so after cleaning up Musk's latest we tucked into a bit of our normal fare: big rounds, IPOs, and venture moves. Up first was the $100 million Hopper round. For those unaware, Hopper is a travel-focused company that helps folks with flexible schedules get cheap tickets to fun places. Who these people are who have flexible schedules isn't clear to me at the moment, but I'm sure someone, somewhere, isn't effectively their Google Calendar's valet. Also up this week: $165 million more for ZipRecruiter, and possibly $500 million more for Coinbase. A few thoughts. First, it was super interesting that this was only Zip's second known round ever, and that Coinbase's valuation could have been even higher than the rumor. Perhaps even 50 percent higher. Scooting to the next, the impending Tencent Music IPO caught our fancy. It's going to be big, it's going to be splashy, and the company actually makes money. What an odd trio of things! Yes, there are companies in the world that go public and make money. Just not that many of them these days. And finally. there's news out of the a16z fortress: a new partner rises. As Connie notes during the show, Andreessen as a firm has been on a bit of a hiring kick. Which is fair, frankly, as it's not like the shop is short of cash. That and a few jokes along the way were all that we had time for. Shout out to Andy for being fun, and you, for sticking with the show. Chat soon!

The DevOps kids have decided to come up with a new term “observability.” We get to the bottom of the WTF barrel on what that is - it sounds like a good word-project. Also, there’s a spate of kubernetes news, as always, and some interesting acquisitions. Plus, a micro-iOS 11 review. Meta, follow-up, etc. Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/sdt) - like anyone who starts these things, I have no idea WTF it is, if it’s a good idea, or if I should be ashamed. Need some product/market fit. Check out the Software Defined Talk Members Only White-Paper Exiguous podcast over there. Join us all in the SDT Slack (http://www.softwaredefinedtalk.com/slack). Is “observability” just “instrumentation”? Write-up (https://medium.com/@copyconstruct/monitoring-and-observability-8417d1952e1c) from Cindy Sridharan. This guy (https://medium.com/@steve.mushero/observability-vs-monitoring-is-it-about-active-vs-passive-or-dev-vs-ops-14b24ddf182f): “Thinking directionally, Monitoring is the passive collection of Metrics, logs, etc. about a system, while Observability is the active dissemination of information from the system. Looking at it another way, from the external ‘supervisor’ perspective, I monitor you, but you make yourself Observable.” So, yes: if developers actually make their code monitorable and manageable…easy street! It’s a good detailing of that important part of DevOps. Cloud Native Java (http://amzn.to/2jPJHcv) has a good example with the default “observability” attributes for apps, and then an overview of Zipkin tracing. Weekly k8s News Heptio gets funding (https://www.geekwire.com/2017/heptio-raises-25m-series-b-funding-round-kubernetes-takes-world/), now “has raised $33.5 million in funding to date.” I think we’ll cover this press release in a WP episode. Also, something called “StackPointCloud” now with the Istio (https://thenewstack.io/stackpointcloud-drops-istio-service-mesh-integration/). Mesosphere adding K8s support (https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/06/mesosphere-says-its-not-bowing-to-kubernetes/) - “Guagenti also noted that he believes that Mesosphere is currently a leader in the container space, both in terms of the number of containers its users run in production and in terms of revenue (though the company sadly didn’t share any numbers).” "I think it’s fair to call Kubernetes the de facto standard for how enterprises will do container orchestration,” Derrick Harris (http://news.architecht.io/issues/with-oracle-on-board-kubernetes-has-to-be-the-de-facto-standard-for-container-orchestration-73880). Is Kubernetes Repeating OpenStack’s Mistakes? (https://www.mirantis.com/blog/is-kubernetes-repeating-openstacks-mistakes/) - Boris throwing bombs Meanwhile, an abstract of a containers penetration study (https://redmonk.com/fryan/2017/09/10/cloud-native-technologies-in-the-fortune-100/), from RedMonk: "Docker, is running at 71% across Fortune 100 companies. Kubernetes usage is running in some form at 54%, and Cloud Foundry usage is at 50%” This update from the Cloud Foundry Foundation (https://www.cloudfoundry.org/update-containers-2017-research-shows/) is a little more, er, “responsible” in pointing out flaws. Instead it just says there’s lots of growth and tire-kicking: 2016/2017 y/y shows those evaluating containers went up from 31% to 42%, while “using” ticked up a tad from 22% to 25%, n=540. K8s on Oracle Linux, K8s for Oracle Public Cloud. “At this point, there really can’t be any doubt that Kubernetes is winning the container orchestration wars, given that virtually every major player is now backing the project, both financially and with code contributions.” James checks in on Red Hat (http://redmonk.com/jgovernor/2017/09/21/red-hat-is-pretty-good-at-being-red-hat/). Rackspace acquires Datapipe (https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/11/rackspace-acquires-datapipe-as-it-looks-to-expand-its-managed-cloud-business/) “The reason we’re buying them is that we want to extend our leadership in multi-cloud services,” Rackspace chief strategy officer Matt Bradley told me. “It’s a sign and signal that we’re going for it.” Bradley expects that the combined company will make Rackspace the largest private cloud player and the largest managed hosting service. Datadog acquires Logmatic.io to add log management to its cloud monitoring platform (https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/07/datadog-acquires-logmatic-io-to-add-log-management-to-its-cloud-monitoring-platform/) Puppet Acquires Distelli (https://www.geekwire.com/2017/puppet-acquires-distelli-bolster-cloud-computing-automation-platform/), known for their Kubernetes dashboard. Jay Lyman at 451 (https://451research.com/report-short?entityId=93381). Sizing Puppet: “The company has grown to more than 500 employees, and has estimated annual revenue in the $100m range.” Coverage from Susan Hall: “What we haven’t had up to this point is all the requisite automation for moving infrastructure code and application code through any kind of automated delivery lifecycle” and now they gots that. https://thenewstack.io/puppet-will-extend-infrastructure-automation-capabilities-distelli-acquisition/ “In May, the company launched its Kubernetes dashboard K8S. It allows users to connect repositories, build images from source, then deploy them to that Kubernetes cluster. You can also set up automated pipelines to push images from one cluster to another, promote software from test/dev to prod, quickly roll back and do all this in the context of one or more Kubernetes clusters… The Kubernetes service is offered as a hosted service or in an on-prem version. It provides notifications through Slack.” Google pays $1.1 billion for HTC team and non-exclusive IP license (https://www.axios.com/login-2487682498.html?rebelltitem=2&utm_medium=linkshare&utm_campaign=organic#rebelltitem2) Security Corner The Apple Effect? — Why BMW might get rid of car keys (http://www.autonews.com/article/20170915/OEM06/170919789/why-bmw-might-get-rid-of-car-keys) Don’t blame Apache — EQUIFAX OFFICIALLY HAS NO EXCUSE (https://www.wired.com/story/equifax-breach-no-excuse/) Is there anything to do here? Hackers respond to Face ID on the iPhone X (http://bgr.com/2017/09/21/iphone-x-release-date-soon-hackers-eye-face-id/) iOS 11 Coté has been running the beta. It seems fine. There’s the usual Re-arrangement of how some gestures work that’s jarring at first, but after using it for awhile, you forget what they even are. The extra control center stuff is nice. The Files.app is interesting, but not too featureful. The new photo formats are annoying because, you know, non-Apple things need to support it (which they seem to?) It's been a long time coming but we're here with our first international edition of Taylor Made. Bringing you nonsense from both sides of the Atlantic, the time zone difference only makes it more confusing. It's a doozey of an episode which is clocking in at just under an hour but it's filled to the brim with giggles and snorts. We also swore quite a lot this time round and I'm not quite sure why. As we haven't had a catch-up in a while, we talked to great lengths about Sam's experiences from working at the Olympics and how he managed to combine the names of an astronomer and the Mayor of London and then humiliate himself in front of one of them. Lemurs and Pagans are also discussed at one point. Talking points: Brian Johnson, Brian Cox, Boris Johnson, Pagans, lemurs, Canada, Guild Wars 2 and the Olympics.
