Brown noise is characterized by its particular frequency spectrum. Unlike white noise, which has equal energy across all frequencies, Brown noise contains more low-frequency components and less high-frequency components compared to white noise. Due to its gentle, soothing qualities and its ability to mask distracting sounds, brown noise is commonly used for relaxation, meditation, and improving sleep quality. It can also be utilized in sound therapy to help alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, and tinnitus. Overall, brown noise offers a rich auditory experience that can promote a sense of calm, focus, and well-being, making it a valuable tool for enhancing our daily lives. You might hear an ad in the beginning of the show depending on where you are located. But there are no interruptions once the show has started. This episode continues the conversation with Davit Baghdasaryan, Co-Founder & CEO of Krisp - a software tool that maximizes the productivity and impact of every conversation by eliminating noise distractions, increasing the fidelity of voice communication, and transcribing and synthesizing the most relevant details and analytics from every voice interaction. Krisp has grown significantly throughout COVID and beyond. They saw a huge market opportunity with call centers where the issue of noise cancellation is truly prevalent and expensive, which helped them grow through word of mouth. Throughout this growth spurt they've been able to add a plethora of new features, and now they're moving into the lucrative meeting assistant place. The next feature they're working on is accent translation, which automatically translates the speaker's accent to the listeners accent to help break through accent barriers.COVID wasn't a walk in the park for Davit. They had built a multiple org structure, which caused the company to overhire. Without alignment and verticalization they were becoming much slower to act and the environment became too bureaucratized to work at the level of efficiency that is required from a SaaS startup. They made a big pivot and moved back to a model that brought them their initial success and allowed them to return to scaling. Davit is a big believer in the fact that every person you hire adds overhead to your business, and even though you need to make the right hires to grow - hiring more people makes your processes run slower until they've been with you for a while. Your goal is not to just hire, it's to create more customer value. There is an old adage about cinema: that it may seem a principally visual medium; but in fact, its soundtrack and sound design are just as important. So it is with our more general encounter with the city. While it may seem that we are surrounded and even overwhelmed by an assemblage of visual inputs, our experience of the city is multi-sensory. And sound, in particular, is fundamental in constituting how we experience cities. People walking, standing and conversing; vehicles moving, stopping and reversing; pounding construction equipment; amplified music and announcements; pedestrian crossing beacons; the calls of birds and other animals; the reverberations of hallways and rooms. These and other audible effects and affects shape our urban experience, a fact not at all obscure for sight impaired urban travellers and explorers. In this episode, we consider the urban soundscape both generally, but also via personal sound devices, perhaps the most noted, and explicit kinds of sonic urban mediation. Such technologies have often been framed as a way to ‘manage' the urban experience: to limit, cope or otherwise make more pleasant its noise, complexity, drudgery, dreariness, excitement and strangeness. Another perspective, however, is that such technologies are as much about urban engagement as disengagement; ways of re-modulating, remixing, reformatting or retuning our interface with urban life. Thinkers discussed: Sarah Barns (Sounds Different: Listening to the Proliferating Spaces of Technological Modernity in the City); Martin Heidegger (The age of the world picture); Walter Ong (Orality and Literacy: The Technologising of the World); Jonathan Sterne (The Audible Past: Cultural Origins of Sound Reproduction); Georg Simmel (The Metropolis and Mental Life); Adriana de Souza e Silva and Jordan Frith (Mobile Interfaces in Public Spaces: Locational Privacy, Control, and Urban Sociability); Erving Goffman (Behavior in public places); Paul du Gay, Stuart Hall, Linda Janes, Anders Koed Madsen, Hugh Mackay and Keith Negus (Doing Cultural Studies: The Story of the Sony Walkman); Michael Bull (Sounding Out the City: Personal Stereos and the Management of Everyday Life / Sound moves: iPod culture and urban experience); Matthew Jordan (Becoming Quiet: On Mediation, Noise Cancellation, and Commodity Quietness); David Beer (Tune Out: Music, Soundscapes and the Urban Mise-en-scène); William Mitchell (Me++: The Cyborg Self and the Networked City); Betsey Biggs (Like it was a Movie: Cinematic Listening as Public Art); Allan Watson and Dominiqua Drakeford-Allen (‘Tuning Out' or ‘Tuning in'? Mobile Music Listening and Intensified Encounters with the City). Music: ‘The Mediated City Theme' by Scott Rodgers License: CC BY-NC (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/)
Active Noise Cancellation technology was patented in the 50s to help aviation personnel deal with the noise in the flight. Bose, an audio company, then worked on it to make passenger earbuds with this technology to help them avoid the whirring noise. In this episode, Ashdin tells us about how noise can correspond to negative thoughts and the technology to deal with it is to cancel it out with an anti-noise which means positive thought. There is noise all around us. Yet we hardly notice it. In today's world the ambient noise we are exposed to is immense. This causes irritation, sleep problems, hearing loss, decreased productivity, lack of concentration, miscommunication, etc. But we don't worry about it till its too late. Noise cancellation is a technology that's actively trying to reduce our ambient noise so that we can reclaim silence. In this week's talk, Amit and Rinat talk about Noise Cancellation, what is it, what are its different types, how it works and a lot more!

Janne Kyllönen of QuietOn shares the story of creating noise cancellation earbuds specifically built for sleeping and relaxation.
On the show this week we are joined by Amir Slapak, Senior Business Development Manager with Israeli-based company Silentium, to find out about pioneering Active Noise Cancellation technology being developed to enhance sound quality and cut out distraction in all sorts of environments. We are joined by Samsung Galaxy user Kerie Doyle who shares with us her experience using the Commentary Screen Reader for the Android operating system. With custom gestures, a built-in voice assistant, and many more features, is Commentary Screen Reader a suitable alternative to the TalkBack Screen Reader on Android phones, and how is it installed? There are recent reports that Apple is developing a subscription plan to let you pay a monthly fee for an iPhone rather than buy it outright. Might you want to purchase your next iPhone the same way you pay for Netflix, Amazon Prime and the many other subscription services we have come to rely on?Support the show (https://www.ncbi.ie/supporting-us/donate-now/)
There is an old adage about cinema: that it may seem a principally visual medium; but in fact, its soundtrack and sound design are just as important. Fitness Plus from Apple Tried this out over the last week. Disappointing initially that none of the Workout routines were either Audio Described or had another way of finding out what actual exercises were being performed, I decided for now just to do my own exercises, and use the training and rest times in each Workout. As there is no actual exercises to do I the Treadmill or Bike Workouts, these worked as expected. If you use the Apple TV with the Apple Watch, your real time data comes up on the screen so you can monitor and see how others have gone with this particular workout. You can just use fitness Plus int eh Fitness app on iOS without the Appel Watch, follow along with each routine, but you won’t get any direct data from your Apple Watch. I think if you had a treadmill, bike or rowing machine, these weekly pre-recorded workouts with the trainer, and great music are fine. Otherwise, perhaps not. At least you can try it out for 1 month free or 3 months if you buy an Apple Watch. After that, it is $14.95 per month. https://fitness.apple.com/us/subscribe?itscg=10000&itsct=fit-hero-hp_tile-apl-ann-201111 New Head Phones from Apple - AirPods Max Cost: $895.00 Australian. Brief Product Description: Apple’s over the ear version of the AirPods Pro with a lot of great features and sound. Stainless steel head band with mesh canopy, aluminium ear cups, and magnetically removable/replaceable ear cup fabric cushions. Two easy access controls, Digital Crown to control media/Siri, and Noise Control for Noise Cancellation, and Transparency Mode. What you Get in the Box: AirPods Max. Smart case (AirPods Max already inserted in to the case). Lightning to USBC cable. Getting started guide. Purchased Separately: USB charger. Lightning to 3.5mm TRS audio cable. Note - plug AirPods Max in to chargers that you would usually plug your iPhone in to. Audio cable is to allow AirPods Max to be plugged in to older devices purely for getting audio out of them, can’t use Siri etc with this cable plugged in. Physical description and Details of the Head Phones: Stainless steel frame head band with a soft to touch and stretchy canopy to take weight off top of head. Telescoping stainless steel ear cup arms to adjust ear cups to fit over ears. Brushed aluminium rectangular ear cups with rounded corners. Stainless steel had band colour to match iPhone 12 colour, and ear cups colour to match iPad Air or MacBook colour. Ear cup cushions magnetically attached to ear cups, and can be replaced. Sensors to detect if AirPods max removed from head and will stop media, continuing once head set back on. When taken off, both ear cups can be rotated 90 degrees to lay flat or to be inserted in to the smart case. When wearing the head set, ear cups rotate slightly for a better and more comfortable fit. 9 microphones spread over both ear cups to deal with calls, noise/transparency modes, and wind noise reduction. Each ear cup also contains the H1 chip and 10 core audio computational processor. What they Sound Like: Music is absolutely brilliant with individual instruments almost having their own space. Rich sound. Spacial audio sound is amazing with the music surrounding the listener. Not basie at all, only when music calls for it. Excellent with Head Phone Accommodations that you can truly customise the sound. Lovely to listen to audio books or podcasts. Phone calls are clear, and callers report ease of listening. Video conferencing services such as Zoom worked just as well with audio quality. Noise reduction even better than that of the AirPods Pro, this goes the same for the transparency mode. VoiceOver is just as responsive with the AirPods Max as it is with the AirPods Pro. Hey Siri is very responsive. Benefits: Extremely responsive with VoiceOver on iOS or Mac. Very comfortable to wear, even though weight is 380 grams. As reviewer is a voiceOver user, wearing the head set all day is not an issue at all. Telescoping arms allow the perfect position to be set, and take a little effort to adjust when is great as they then do not shorten or lengthen. Ear cups feel very comfortable over ears, and do not seem to cause sweating etc. When the AirPods Max are placed in to the Smart Case, magnets in the case put the head set in to a low power mode. Instant reconnection to an Apple device when placed back on the head. Just simply convenient to turn a dial or press a button. Easy to locate and use the Digital Crown (volume etc), and Noise Control buttons. Easy to locate lightning port for charging or plugging in the not supplied audio cable. There is a notch in the smart case to allow a lightning cable to be plugged in to the head set as well. The aluminium ear cups feel smooth and cool to the touch. Unlike some head phone cushions, these cushions have a whole magnetic housing which magnetically clips in to the ear cups. Works with Find My. Like with AirPods Pro, when playing media or dictating, AirPods Max does not turn this off when using Siri, which it does on Mac OS. When plugging head set in to a 20W UsBC fast charger, 1.5hours of battery is gained within 5 minutes. When plugged in to a standard iPhone charger (not a fast charger), from 0 to 95% is achieved in 2hrs. The aluminium used in the ear cups is the same in the iPod air or MacBook Pros, and is quite durable. The not supplied Lightning to 3.5MM audio jack cable is purely to connect the head set to older 3.5MM audio devices and offers no benefit besides the physical connection. Hey Siri and Announce Messages by Siri is also available. Points to consider: Note - a few software issues, but the hardware is excellent, software can be improved upon. Supply own charger. Supply own audio cable. The 3.5MM audio cable takes its volume from the device, not the head set, maximum volume therefore on such devices such as the Victor Reader Stream, Victor Trek or the Envoy Connect are about half the volume that the AirPods can put out at maximum volume. Head set is not water proof. Smart case doesn’t offer that much protection especially if they are placed in a bag etc. How durable the mesh is at the top of the head set remains to be seen. Given the cost, strongly suggest Apple Care. Reviewer would suggest these are more for office/home use, rather than being out in the community. Hoobs Home Automation Hub A few months ago I added a Raspberry Pi running homebridge to my home automation system so that I could use Ring and Harmony products on Homekit. It works quite well but it did require quite a bit of fiddling and knowledge of SSH, Config files, networking, building software, and installing plugins. For software developers like us we'd rate that a 7 out of 10 on the difficulty scale. For someone without this knowledge we'd rate it an 11 out of 10 on the difficulty scale. A few listeners emailed us about a solution called HOOBS (Homebridge out of the box system) that is supposed to make it much easier. It costs $170 for the complete system but if you already have a raspberry Pi you can buy a SD card with everything setup and ready to go for $20. For our test we went with the complete system out of the box. Setup The HOOBS box is about the size of a deck of cards and trival to get up and running, You plug in power, wait for it to boot up and install then connect it to your network with the ethernet cable that is provided. Next launch a browser and type hoobs.local into the address field. From there the system asks you to setup a user account and that gets the system up and running. It can't do anything at this point but it's ready to be configured with plugins. This process takes about ten minutes. To get to the same spot of the Raspberry Pi without HOOBS took more than an hour! What Next? First thing you need to do is add the HOOBS hub to your Homekit setup. The interface has a QR code that you scan with your phone in the Home app. It gives you a warning that it is not a supported accessory. Once you are done the HOOBS Bridge is now added and any device that can talk to HOOBS will be exposed as a supported HomeKit Device. Now you are ready to add plugins for your devices. In the HOOBS interface there is a good search tool that makes the process simple. Even the installation is one touch. We loaded our two plugins (Ring and Harmony) in a matter of minutes. The only place where the HOOBS process is still a bit geeky is the configuration. You don't have to actually modify the configuration file in raw form for certified plugins (both the Ring and Harmony plugins are certified) but you still need to know what to do. There is no real clear explanation for the Harmony Remote plugin so you will have to hunt around. There are plenty of Youtube videos that will walk you through it. The Ring plugin also required a bit of work. If you have two-factor verification turned on you need to run a command line application to get a key. The instructions are clear and Hoobs makes it simple to open a terminal window to run the command. Like the Harmony Plugin there are videos that show you what to do. There are instructions on how to add the new devices to your Homekit system. Some devices just show up and others need to be added like any other supported device. Other Thoughts We were never really able to setup the Rasberry Pi to boot into Homebridge and allow for remote access. That meant each time the system needed to be reset we had to SSH into the Pi and setup remote access. Then we had to remote into the Pi and launch Homebridge. Hoobs has taken care of this but making Homebridge auto start. This is even true for installing plugins. HOOBS has certified (to work with HOOBS) many of the most popular plugins which makes them easier to find and install. The web interface is also a huge advantage in that with a little network administration can make the Hoobs interface available outside your home. Conclusion While we overwhelmingly feel that HOOBS has made the installation and setup of Homebridge more straightforward and easy to maintain. We won't go as far to say that if you don't have any computer skills it makes it easy. There is still some tweaking that needs to be done to get Homebridge running on your network. We recommend this for the techie person that just doesn't want to spend a few hours setting up a Raspberry Pi and building and configuring Homebridge.
2. My Review of the Airpods Pro In the box: wireless charging case (no other option) containing the Airpods Pro, cardboard sleeve containing two ear tip pair sizes (small and large) with the medium tips already on the AirPods, lightning to USBC cable, and getting started guide. Charging case is much more rectangular in shape than the previous AirPods with the long side containing the lid rather than the short side on the previous AirPods. Charging case still has the Connect button on the back for pairing to other devices than the iPhone etc. To pair, simply open the lid near your iOs device and a popup dialog will appear for connection plus info about using the new gestures. A big simple tip on getting the Airpods Pro out of the case, pull each AirPod Pro forward in the case and it will come out easily, don't try and grasp it like the older AirPods as this will be quite difficult to do. The Airpods Pro themselves: the stem is shorter containing the force touch area facing front, and the part that goes in to the ear is more rounded as it contains the attachment for the silicone tips. To pull the ear tips off, grasp towards the bottom of the ear tip where it clips on to each AirPod Pro and pull. To put them back on, position the round clip and push down, you'll will fill a click. One important thing about the tips, they are just rubber not rubber over a plastic inner tip which means they conform to your inside of your ear much better. Take time to try out all the tips from the cardboard container to get the best fit. To confirm you have the best listening fit, with the Airpods Pro connected go in to Settings, Bluetooth, the Info button for the Airpods Pro, and choose Ear Tip Fit Test to test the best fit for acoustic performance. The Airpods Pro have an inner and outer microphone to balance and monitor sound, especially for noise cancellation and transparency. The stem press's or as I like to call them squeezes are: Long squeeze, switch between Noise Cancellation and transparency mode: you'll hear a click to let you know the long squeeze has started and then one tone for Noise or two tones for transparency modes. One squeeze: start/stop media or answer a call, you'll hear one click. Two quick squeezes: next track, you'll hear two clicks. Three quick squeezes: previous track, you'll hear 3 clicks. Again Apple's attention to detail, you'll hear the click of the squeeze in then AirPod you have squeezed: eg left or right. For those that have used the clicker on the wire of the wired Ear Pods, the 1, 2 and 3 squeezes are exactly the same as clicking on the button of the clicker. If you find the squeezes a bit hard to do, you can make them slower by going to Settings, Accessibility, AirPods, and change squeeze speed and hold. Here as well, you can turn on Noise Cancelation if you only have one AirPod in. You can use Hey Siri with the AirPods. You can use Airpods Pro with Live Listen, especially with Noise Cancellation which allows you to concentrate on the person speaking in to your iPhone microphone. Noise Cancellation works extremely well by cutting out low to medium frequency sounds, very useful when on a train, plane, or cutting out sound at home like the tV in the other room etc. Transparency which allows you to hear what is around you, works extremely well and is in stereo which allows you to identify where sounds are coming from. In either Noise Cancellation or Transparency Modes, you don't hear yourself speak inside your head like some other inner Ear ear buds. The Transparency Mode in the Galaxy Buds if you have ever tried this, work nothing like the Airpods Pro i.e. with the Buds you can't tell where the sound is coming from and your voice sounds quite loud. Even if your Airpods Pro are not connected to your iPhone, you can still use Noise or Transparency Modes to block out or listen to what is around you. A great feature with Siri is that you can say “turn on or off Noise /cancellation” or “turn on or off Transparency Mode”. With Siri, you can easily check the battery status of the Airpods Pro. Find My works with the Airpods of course. As with the AirPods, once you have paired the Airpods Pro, all other devices that share the same Apple ID will have the Airpods Pro listed ready to use. Airpods Pro will give 4.5 (if Noise or Transparency Mode on) to 5 hours of use, charging case gives 24 hours of recharge, and plugging in Airpods Pro in to case for about 30 minutes will give about 50 percent charge back. You can still use a standard lightning to UsB cable for the Airpods Pro charger or plug them in to a MacBook that uses USBC ports to charge the charging case. Sweat and water resistant with an iPX4 rating. Charging case, Airpods Pro, and ear tips are all white. Airpods Pro require iOS 13.2, Apple Watch 6, and Mac OS Catalina. iPod touch 7th generation, iPhone SE and above, Apple TV (known as Apple TV HD), and Apple Watch 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 will all work with the Airpods Pro. Supported Macs go back a fair time as well, use the following link to find about the technical specifications of the AirPod Pro, and supported OS: https://www.apple.com/au/airpods-pro/specs/ My thoughts: I have changed my use of AirPods, now with the Pros, I now use both AirPods all the time, not just one. The ear tips make the Airpods Pro much more useful when in louder environments. Having the ability to switch between noise cancellation and transparency mode easily for me is a significant game changer, especially when I just want to block out the outside world as it were. Feel safe when travelling around due to the excellent transparency mode. The attention to detail with having noise cancellation when only using one AirPod pro, plus the ability to adjust the squeeze gestures is again an example of Apple not necessarily inventing something new, but doing it better. As with the Apple Watch and the ease of changing bands, Apple has done this with the ear tips, plus the fact you don't have hard plastic going in to your ear as with other ear phones I've tried. I would have really liked knowledge on how to get the Airpods Pro out of the charging case as I tried to pull them out the same way I did with the previous AirPods which makes it very difficult, pushing them forward to have them just simply pop out is great, but I didn't know that smile. Having the ear tip in your ear, makes you feel that the Airpods Pro will not fall out as easily as the AirPods, although I've really not had the AirPods fall out. People report that for Audio Files, there are still better inner Ear ear Phones out there for listening to music, but overall and ease of use, the Airpods Pro still do an excellent job. As I mainly listen to VoiceOver, audio books, podcasts etc, Airpods Pro do the job exactly. Airpods Pro retail for $399 in Australia. Finishing Off Some More Christmas Ideas Apple Watch Series 3 or Series 5. Apple TV 4th Generation (Apple TV HD, not the 4K one). The Ember Temperature Controlled Mug. The Tile Tag Tracking System.
