Chaos is all around and can happen at any moment. We can either allow the chaos to rob us of peace or we can maintain peace. Is this possible? How? Fr. Ben sheds light on this topic, esp through the life of St. Josephine Bakhita. (There will not be a homily released next week due to Bishop's Annual Appeal.)

In this final week of Advent, we light the purple candle of peace. In prayer and penance, we wait for the birth of our Savior. We are called to step away from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, quiet ourselves, and prepare the center place in our hearts for Christ Jesus. It is in the peace and quiet of the midnight hours that the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. Our special guest, Bonnie O'Neil, Executive Director of Alpha Mid-Atlantic, author, spiritual director, Bible teacher, and engaging speaker, takes a deep dive into understanding Joseph. She joins Jenn, Rachel, and Jacqueline to discuss Matthew 1:18-24, where we are given a small glimpse of the man God chose to be the earthly father of His Son. We have much to learn from Joseph's unwavering faithfulness and obedience to God.The Lord's plans do not always make sense to us, but they are always good. We may ask, "God, why is life not easier?" Advent invites us to embrace the mystery of faith that God is always working things together for our good. In order to hear God and recognize His voice, we must be quiet. How are you listening to God? How does He speak to you?The Lord promised Joseph that Mary would give birth to a son who will save His people from their sins. While this was not Joseph's initial plan for his life, his personal faith provided his willingness to mold his desires to match the Lord's. In this season of Advent, press into your deepest longings and desires as you wait for the Lord. "But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.'" This past Sunday, we lit the third candle, the rose candle of joy, as a moment of rejoicing while we await the birth of our Savior. Advent can be a powerful time to reflect and prepare our hearts for Jesus, to allow Him to reach us in ways we have not yet known Him.The scriptures this week give us much pause for joy. Who is this Jesus? Why did He come?Join us today as Janet leads us in a beautiful reflection on Psalm 146:6-10 and come to know Him just a little deeper still. He is the maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets free the prisoner. The Lord gives sight to the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down. The Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but He frustrates the ways of the wicked. The God of heaven became a man that He might become our salvation. He became one of us. Lord, we thank you today for who you are, and for what you've done. We recognize that you love us incredibly, and we can trust in You. Thank You for becoming one of us. During this second week of Advent, the candle we light on the advent wreath represents faith. And there's a lot of faith required in this passage we're discussing today from Isaiah 11:1-10.It's that one that begins, "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit." When you look at a stump, you don't usually see new trees growing out of it. A stump is usually dead, and you're just waiting for it to decay. This represents David and his kingdom and his family line. But Jesus is a really unexpected surprise.David's line had appeared to be done for as the last of the Davidic kings had been carted off to Babylon. Then they return, and there are a few of them that try to set up the kingdom, but they fail and they're under oppression. But Isaiah speaks of a shoot that will bear fruit. So, you know, Jesus. He is not what people expect. He's a surprise. In the passage on the wedding in Cana , there is wine that is saved for the last. That's kind of like Jesus. It's a description of Jesus. This wine is amazing, intoxicating, and flavorful. Where did this come from? That wine is like this shoot coming out of the stump of Jesse. And so, in Jesus, something that was lost is being restored. Even something that people were hoping for comes to us in a marvelous way.Jesus arrives in the fullness of time. He's unexpected and He's better than anything we could imagine. That's the faith that this passage is indicating-Jesus is something you've never seen before. The Messiah's kingdom is so much more than we can get our heads around. He's going to bring wisdom and order to all of creation. We're going to see an end to things that we thought were never going to be possible. This Advent, respond to the invitation to groan along with all creation, to groan for Messiah's Kingdom, to groan for Jesus, and for His glory to be revealed. The words He longs to speak to you are astonishingly and astoundingly good. Looking for a kairos moment?Well, isn't Advent that sort of time? The birth of Jesus, the Incarnation- could there have been another kairos moment like that? For hundreds and hundreds of years, people were waiting for a Messiah. But they didn't just get a Messiah. They got God Incarnate! So they got more than they hoped for, more than they imagined, more than they could expect, and they almost missed it because He didn't come in the way they expected. We don't want to be those people that miss the moment during Advent. We don't want to miss out on the best Christmas celebration. We want to draw near to Him because we're not just hoping for a Messiah. We're not just hoping for a nice celebration; we're hoping for a deeper encounter with Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.He has been born among us, lives among us, and by His Holy Spirit dwells in us. So, this is a kairos moment, a powerful time, an extraordinary time!Join us as we reflect today on Romans 13:11-12 and be drawn into the extraordinary!Like our podcast? Show Snippet "Christ is both present and coming...so there's that eschatological aspect to it that (Pope Paul VI) was drawing our attention to. "I hope the Roughriders will get a playoff spot..." and, I mean, that's nice, that's part of hope. But not by far the strength, the core, the heart of what hope means...in Latin 'expectare', in French 'esperance', same word. And it means, expectare, it means 'to wait for, and expect...'"

Montessori Series “Wrap-Up” with Claire Paglia “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 “Freedom is understood, in a very elementary fashion, as the immediate release from oppressive bonds; as a cessation of corrections and of submission to authority. This conception is plainly negative, that is to say, it means only the elimination of coercion. From this comes, often enough, a very simple reaction: a disorderly pouring out of impulses previously controlled by the adult's will. To let the child do as he likes when he has not yet developed any powers of control is to betray the idea of freedom. The result is children who are disorderly because order had been imposed upon them, lazy because they had previously been forced to work, and disobedient because their obedience had been enforced.” Maria Montessori, Absorbent Mind Claire Paglia joins us again today to discuss this Montessori Series with us in light of Freedom and Discipline. Claire Paglia is a child of the atrium. As an adult, she is an AMI-trained guide who has been in the primary environment for 12 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in education with a concentration in Montessori from Loyola University, Maryland. She worked for a year as a course assistant for the primary training center. In 2012, she received her Level I formation and has been a catechist at her church in varying capacities since then. “He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, ‘Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:4 Today we are continuing our season 2 journey of exploring all things Montessori by diving into her philosophy on the four planes of development. What are they? Why are they important for us to understand as we work with the Good Shepherd and the child? Claire Paglia joins us again today to dive into this subject. "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." Matthew 18:5 Welcome back friends to the GS and the child podcast! We are excited to begin season 2 with a series on all things Montessori! To start this season off we are going to explore the history of Maria Montessori and her work! A good episode to go back to is Episode 28 on Montessori's Epiphany with Sherry Mock. But today we are going to look at the whole timeline of Montessori's life and work, but episode 28 takes one moment of that timeline, Jan 6, 1907, and goes into the beautiful details from that day. So, after you listen to today's episode, go check out episodes 28. Carol began as a Montessori Guide after receiving her diploma at the 38th Indian Montessori Training Course in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India in 1974. The very next year, Sofia Cavalletti participated in an International AMI Conference in St. Paul, MN. After the conference, 30 of the primary Montessori guides, took the first course given in the U.S. They covered all three levels and studied for 5 weeks. Later, she competed two degrees in Human Development, both her B.A. and M.A., the latter from St. Mary's University. The first atrium in Minnesota began because her two children, who were adopted from the Missionaries of Charity in India, turned 5 and 3 years old. The atrium began in 1982 at the Church of St. Frances Cabrini, Minneapolis, MN. In 2006, Carol received the Diploma from the Assistants to Infancy training at the Opera Nazionale Montessori in Rome, Italy. She was able to work with Silvana Montanaro and visit the Rome Atrium often. In the late 1980's she began work as a Formation Leader and has given CGS catechist formation in all three levels over the last 30 years. Another joyful ‘grace' was yet to come when she was invited to work with the Missionaries of Charity, beginning in 2009 in Kenya. A complete circle, from the adoption of her children to serving the sisters, a golden thread, sewn by the Holy Spirit. In addition to Formation Courses in the U.S., Carol has worked with the sisters in Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Trinidad, and Rwanda. To raise awareness, and hopefully some money, for the Wellington Rape Crisis Annual Appeal we live-streamed this episode of Better off Read on Sunday 2 May at 8.00 pm. I talked with M. Darusha Wehm about their work with a special focus on narrative and plot. I'm particularly excited to talk to Darusha about their new work The Qubit Zirconium a riotous science fantasy novel from the smash hit game, KeyForge. We don't talk directly about sexual violence in this live-stream, but I do talk at the start of the episode, in a general way, about the work Wellington Rape Crisis does. You can watch the livestream on PIp's YouTube channel here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yazbjVRKrqE&t=215s You can donate to Wellington Rape Crisis at https://wellingtonrapecrisis.org.nz/donate-now/

In the Diocese of Camden, it is fundraising season again as the House of Chairty - Bishop’s Annual Appeal begins anew this winter. The annual campaign that serves many ministries of the diocese, including various social services, Catholic schools, ministries and vocations in South Jersey, is managed by our good friend of the podcast and Associate Director of Development for the Diocese of Camden, Katie Comerford-Rivera. Joining her on the podcast is one of our favorite fundraising pastors in the diocese, Fr. John Picnic of Christ our Light Parish in Cherry Hill. The two school today’s host, Mike Walsh, on some of the best practices they’ve learned for fundraising over their many years of financial development campaigns. Today’s chat is a great tutorial not just on how to fundraise by also how it marries so perfectly with one of the main tenants of our Catholic faith: charity. #32: The number of people accessing the St Vincent de Paul (SVP) Food Bank in Ballyfermot quadrupled this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and families living in poverty are facing a challenging time this Christmas. Marie Cronin, East Regional President of SVP, speaks about their Annual Appeal.
A final update to our COVID-19 Appeal, where we are hoping to raise £150,000 to help continue providing our free audiobook service. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on us. Like the rest of the charity sector, our income has fallen significantly. Meanwhile, demand for our free audiobook service has increased rapidly with over 100 new members joining each week since lockdown. Previous generous donations from kind supporters like you, have enabled Calibre Audio to support our members by sending stimulating titles, so you can soak up the joy of places far away and captivating adventures that enthral you.
Katie Comerford, the Diocese of Camden‘s Associate Director of Development for the House of Charity - Bishop’s Annual Appeal returns to the podcast to talk about the importance of fundraising - both spiritually and in service to our parishes and communities. Katie is a veteran fundraiser who has worked all around the country. She offers our co-hosts Mary McCusker and Mike Walsh great tips on how to gear up for a fundraiser and what can make it successful. As spring creeps ever closer, Mike and Pete have a sunny chat with Mariann Gilbride, the new Director of Development for the Diocese of Camden. After fighting through conflicting reviews by Mike and Pete about the new Captain Marvel movie, Mariann gets the two MCU lemmings back on course with a great conversation about her journey back to the diocesan offices after time spent in the Diocese of Trenton, insight into the House of Charity- Bishop’s Annual Appeal campaign, and how the generosity of donors helping to build up the Church of South Jersey. We also explore the fact that being a Catholic fundraiser is very much a spiritual ministry. Mariann is one of the good ones, folks!
Annual Appeal
Eric and Brett sit down with Donor Services Coordinator Denise Walsh to take a peek behind the scenes of this year's 2017 "Hope, Born of Mercy" Archbishop's Annual Appeal. We'll discuss the purpose and goal of the Appeal, what you'll find in your Fall mailing (and why we do them), talk about the kinds of accountability and transparency that are built into Archbishop Appeal communications, and different ways to give. Best of all, we'll meet perhaps the most responsible and organized person in the entire building - the amazing woman who helps to make sure the ministry of Jesus Christ in our Archdiocese can actually happen. We're peeling back the curtain and visiting with the wizard on this week's Thinking Faith!
This week Eric and Brett invite you to join them for the Archdiocese of Regina's 2017 Archbishop's Annual Appeal "Hope, Born of Mercy" kick-off event hosted by Our Lady of Peace Parish in Regina. They'll introduce you to some of our new seminarians, our newest priest, and some very special musical guests! Here's your chance to pop in your earbuds, turn up the volume and join men and women from across the diocese for an exciting evening of entertainment, fun and above all hope! And yes, this episode was indeed recorded before a live, studio audience!
Every year at about this time, JCast Network Executive Director and Producer takes a moment to reflect on the year that was, and to ask you, our JCast Network listeners to stand up and support the work that we do, the podcasts that we create, and the Jewish Education, information and life that we try […]
Bert Pitzel has been coordinating things for the Office of Social Justice in the Archdiocese of Regina for more than 20 years. With the 17th Annual Archbishop's Appeal campaign drawing to a close, Eric and Brett thought it would be great to sit down with Bert and discuss what brought him to the Office of Social Justice and some of the key initiatives his office and your support of the Annual Appeal are making happen in our Archdiocese.
This week Brett and Eric introduce you to Michelle Braden and Braden Kuntz (we know...the names confuse us too!) who coordinate the Youth Office for the Archdiocese of Regina. Over the summer, thanks in large part to funding from the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, they had the opportunity to lead several young adults from our Archdiocese on a pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow Poland and they've graciously agreed to tell us al about it!
Annual Appeal season may seem far away but it will be here before you are ready. What do the most successful campaigns have in common? Planning. It may seem early but planning now will increase the impact of your efforts. Mary Elizabeth Entwistle of The Gift Development Group joins Beth to talk about what you can do when you plan ahead. They discuss creating an integrated campaign and how to use direct mail, email and social together. Each of these plays a different role and Mary Elizabeth shares how to incorporate your theme and pace your communications to have the most impact. This Episode of Driving Participation is sponsored by Nonprofit Toolkit. Get templates for design and planning your annual appeal at www.nonprofittoolkit.net
Dr. Jack West thanks the GRACE community for their generous support in our recent Annual Appeal and offers his wishes for a happy and healthy 2013.
