Today we're joined by Jem Fuller. Jem spent his twenties seeking adventure and backpacked all over the world. In his thirties, he came back to Australia to start a family and grew into a successful career. From the outside, he had it all. But as you'll learn in this conversation, everything fell apart. Jem went through a remarkable transformation (his mid-life Awakening) which led him to write his first book ‘The Art of Conscious Communication for Thoughtful Men'. And in this conversation Jem shares some of that wisdom. We talk about: How mindful moments throughout the day can improve your performance at work by shifting your mode from DOING to BEING. Simple ways for men to start opening more to their partner How to get your kids to talk about emotions And why detaching from ego is key to discussing sensitive topics like the conflict in the Middle East I honestly think you'll love this episode with Jem, it's wide-ranging, thought-inspiring and full of actionable takeaways. Jem Fuller led a colorful, nomadic life for much of his 20s and 30s until it was time to grow up, settle down, and get a job so he could take care of his family. But the longer he was in corporate life and the higher he climbed on the ladder, the further he moved away from his core values, which led him to a pretty classic midlife crisis. The midlife crisis, however, led him to uncover some long-held subconscious beliefs that were holding him back. This is the story of how he got there, got through it and built the life that suits him perfectly. Guest BioJem Fuller has lived a colourful, global life. He is the author of the award-winning book, The Art of Conscious Communication for Thoughtful Men, and can be seen delivering his TEDx talk on YouTube.Turning 40 and Brainwashing Yourself into Positive ThinkingJem Fuller says he had a pretty standard upbringing in a middle-class suburb in Melbourne Australia. In his last year of high school, his closest friend died, which shook Jem. When he finished high school, he wanted to get as far away from everything he knew as possible. He fell in love with travel and felt called to travel to far and wild places and to get off the beaten track. He spent his 20s and early 30s either traveling to strange and wonderful places or working somewhere to earn enough money to keep traveling. When he fell in love with his wife, he told her he wasn't done traveling. They ended up having a two and a half year working honeymoon before they moved back to Australia, settled down, had kids and tried to find a way to support a family. He was in his early 30s and he had no career, no qualifications other than traveling the world “bumming around.” Because of all his travel experience, he got a job with a travel company and learned how to be a travel consultant. He put on a suit and tie every day, despite having always been much more alternative (even anti establishment at some points). But he took to it and spent the next 8 years climbing the corporate ladder and ending up in a senior leadership position at the company. As he was driven to chase the revenue growth that all corporate leaders face, he found himself pushed further and further away from his core values and becoming increasingly unhappy. From an Instagram feed level, everything looked great. He had a beautiful wife, two healthy boys and a newly built house down by the beach. The tension between the internal Jem and external Jem ultimately led to a midlife crisis. His marriage had been secretly unhappy and was falling apart. Then, he lost his corporate job, which included the paycheck he needed for the house they had just built on the beach. That meant he couldn't afford the house, so he lost that, too. In the separation, he told his wife he didn't want to fight over stuff so he said she could have it all. After they sold the house, there was debt, which he took because he didn't want his wife to be burdened with it. The only thing he asked for was to go 50/50 with the kids. Shortly before he lost his corporate job, there was a leadership retreat with an external coach. Jem was blown away. He thought the coach was more like a magician. Within half a day he had profiled the entire leadership team and understood what made them tick. Jem knew this was something he wanted to do, but thought he'd do it in a year or two, once the beach house was built and things were more stable. But life had different ideas. Two months later he was out of a job and the dominoes of his life were falling. While friends and family were encouraging him...

Today I am joined by the wonderful Jem Fuller who is a trusted advisor and coach to CEO's and senior leadership teams across the government, private and not-for-profit sectors. He helps create more mindful leaders and healthier work-place cultures. Jem is an expert in human behaviour, specialising in communication and personal resilience. So it's no surprise we got on! Jem shares how men can master the art of communication (I promise guys I'm not singling you out), how he was a terrible communicator in his previous marriage and what his journey has looked like into conscious communication. Jem drops beautiful practical tools in our episode together which you can implement or share with your partner. It's fair to say from his punk days squatting in London to his years of barefoot backpacking around the Indian sub-continent and then years of corporate ‘high-flying', Jem has lived the extremes. Jem is also the Director and Facilitator for his own international leadership retreat company, and has been taking leaders to the remote Indian Himalaya, jungles of Northern Bali and Kimberley region of NW Australia since 2014. Episode 7 Jem Fuller The Art of Communicating Consciously What is communication? General Communication ? Latin Noun Commun'carta which means “to sharing” And “To make comma” Communication is to share a concept and make an idea common and it be understood. We can communicate through a variety of ways, energetic, physically, through language, through touch, through intention. You cannot relay an idea and how impact without communication. It is how we connect and relay. Conscious communication- to be aware of how we are sharing. Generally reactive and not contemplative and consumed in our ego and identity. The ego often sees others options as threats and thus we defend our ideas without even understanding why. Being conscious of who we are and we are not separate. You don't have to be able to understand something to tell someone something, but to connect through communication there needs to be a level of understanding. Asking yourself why are you sharing what you are sharing. Acceptance vs approval makes things smoother, when you accept yourself and everything that was supposed to happen has happened you are able to be move forward. Referenced: Michael Singer “ The Untethered Soul” What is the ego and how does it play into communication? It is necessary and part of being human. The ego is an illusion. And creates duality and right and wrong, good vs bad. Ego gets in the way of connection and communication. You would not have an opinion without contrast of others and therefore we are never separate. Without diversity we cannot solve problems, everyone plays a part of the greater whole. What does loving others and having a different option look like? Why are we so attached to being right when we communicate? Fear is truly what separates us. Mindfulness and becoming aware of our thoughts and feelings, we can begin to shift them. Boundaries play a huge role in communication and conscious communication. What is the purpose and the outcome you are wanting when you communicate to others. Steps to Communicate Consciously Why are you having this convo? For what Purpose? Is it to serve the greater good, then yes. Will it help the situation? Who are you communicating with? How will it be received? What type of communication do they prefer? How will communicate ? Email? Text? Face to face. When, be conscious of the appropriate time. Join me for this wonderful conversation with a man who seems to have done it all. He's backpacked around the world, been a traditional tattooist, founded companies, and he has written a fabulous book, “The Art of Conscious Communication for Thoughtful Men.”. He has studied mindfulness and awareness and brings this spirit of adventure and spiritual equanimity to every interaction. We talk about how paying attention, and making intentional decisions can shape us and the people in our world. KEY TAKEAWAYS We can practice our communication in the traditional sense, to share a sense of community with one another. And we can understand this as a skill, and improve on it. Everything is a projection, so we can train ourselves to change our projections and therefore our perceptions – we can change our lives. We can gradually change our ways of thinking over time that will enable us to curate a life closer to the one we've always visualized for ourselves. There is a real magic to life that underwrites the scientific explanations. We can't identify it, only experience it. BEST MOMENTS [Do you love yourself?] “I do. This is how I feel about myself. I'm a really good man. You know, I'm kind, I'm generous, I'm loving. I care. I'm passionate. Action-taking. You know, I've brainwashed myself to love myself – literally fired the neurons so many times that they've wired together. And I believe my own hype. So, am I worthy of love? Well, philosophically, I believe we all are. But did I love myself before like this? No. So how did I change? Persistence, consistency, determination, and repetition, every day, out loud, “I am good enough, just the way I am.”” “Everything I ever said or did to myself or anyone else, whether it was loving or cruel, or whatever it was, apparently, I should have done it. Why? Because I did.I can't change it. Does that mean I want to repeat the mistakes in the future? Hopefully not. Hopefully, we learn and grow and evolve, right? But everything that's happened should have. This is radical self acceptance.” “I certainly understand that most of what we do is subconscious. Most of what the brain does, by the way, is running this system, this body of ours that we're completely unaware of. And I also you know, I love the practice of being more conscious, spending more time noticing – whatever it is that you can notice. And I find there's a lot of practical and functional application of that into the quality of your life.” “What I find fascinating is, in those glimpses of being beyond identification, beyond the ego in those glimpses, is that me?” ABOUT THE GUEST Jem Fuller has backpacked around the world, founded several businesses, but it's his study of mindfulness over the past several years that has changed his life as well as the lives of countless others. He has been a TedX and motivational speaker, a life coach, and wants to change the lives of others by teaching them how to identify their own core values and learn how to communicate with others. Jem, who lives on a sheep farm in Australia with his partner Talia, is the author of the recently published book, The Art of Conscious Communication for Thoughtful Men, and can be seen delivering his TEDx talk on YouTube. Jem recently found a groove with running, which he acknowledged felt “arduous” initially. “I used to force myself to do it for the exercise. Then, for the 'feel-good' afterwards... and only recently — I'm 50 — with some new high-quality runners, I'm actually starting to enjoy the run itself! I never thought I would say that.” Heather's conversation with Jem follows a few life updates from her — she shares reflections from this year's 40th anniversary of the Bayshore Marathon, Half Marathon & 10K over Memorial Day weekend, thoughts on her IRONMAN 70.3 Michigan in September, a girls trip to Grand Rapids, what she's reading right now, and more. Heather and Jem talk about searching—and finding—ease and flow in life. It's been a long and interesting journey for Jem, and he shares honestly and with vulnerability how the path has unfolded for him so far, to include his “midlife awakening.” They talk about: What it means to take a ‘red-hot crack' at finding your best life (Heather tells Jem she's going to have to start using this awesome Aussie phrase) Radical self-acceptance of the past and present Abundance as a mindset Connection with and immersion in nature Energy as a life force, cross-cultural connection Quality of relationships: “I believe that relationships are at the core of our quality of life—the quality of your relationships directly correlates to the quality of your life. It doesn't matter how much money you have, or how big your house is … you know, none of that matters. If your relationships aren't great, your experiences in life aren't great.” -Jem — For more (including mentions/links during the episode): Bayshore Special: Ali Feller of Ali on the Run Show and Heather talk about the 40th anniversary of the Memorial Day race event Heather and Emma talk about life transitions on the podcast Heather shares her IRONMAN 70.3 Traverse City race experience - 2019 Training updates for the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Traverse City Joe joins Heather on the MRG podcast Connect with Jem: https://jemfuller.com Follow and connect with Heather: www.michiganrunnergirl.com @michiganrunnergirl on Instagram @michiganrunnergirl on Instagram Facebook.com/michigan-runner-girl Heather@michiganrunnergirl.com
