Henry Blodget built Business Insider into one of the few breakout successes of the traffic era. Now, with his new project Regenerator, he's taking a different path—one that reflects the broader shifts in digital media. We talk about the collapse of platform-driven distribution, why subscriptions are a more durable model, how venture capital never quite fit the media business, and what it takes to build in the current environment of fragmented attention and AI disruption.Check out The Rebooting's recent research report about AI and personalizationAttend The Rebooting's Online Forum with Recurrent and WordPress VIP on how Recurrent migrated its tech stack
I spoke with Anonymous Banker, an M&A advisor with a front-row view into the market for buying and selling digital media companies. Needless to say, it's a buyer's market.AB breaks down the market for digital publishing assets – broadly those with page-based models – into three types of buyers:HarvestersCAC jockeysVanity projects/rich person playthings“If you're a publisher with a mostly ad-supported site, odds are your business will be worth less next year than it is now,” he said. Deals are still getting done, but the buyers are different. These are no-name PE firms above ice cream shops in the outskirts of Miami. We go through the list, which ranges from Valnet to Static Media to Savage Ventures to Regent. The playbook is to buy undervalued media properties, slash costs, and milk the programmatic revenue with hyper-lean models that rudely dispense with the nostalgia of “when the going was good.”“Any content they invest in has to be ROI positive within 30 days,” AB said. “You'll never see them spend $20 million hoping advertisers show up. Those days are done.”Other topics we covered:How AI uncertainty is creating overhang that depresses valuations and makes long-term modeling nearly impossibleWhy the most resilient media businesses are lead-generation machines or conversion front-endsWe debate whether the Chernin Group content-to-commerce thesis was wrongHow Substack's recommendation engine is the most efficient user acquisition channel in mediaWhat kinds of content investors still believe in (hint: high-intent verticals, not general news)Check out The Rebooting's new media product research reportSign up for The Rebooting's Online Forum on May 21 at 1pmET featuring a case study on how Recurrent migrated its CMS across a portfolio of sites without disruption

Henrico Schools teachers, staff and even supporters from Richmond and Hanover County took to the Henrico School Board's online public forum for its Feb. 22 meeting to express the need for collective bargaining. Nearly 200 comments from HCPS staff urging the school board to support collective bargaining for HCPS teachers filled almost all of the 29 pages of the online forum. And leaders of the Henrico Education Association, the county's labor union for teachers, said that more than 1,000 HCPS staff signed authorization cards in favor of launching contract negotiations. To overcome inequity and injustice, there are systemic issues that must be remedied. Part of what it takes is adequately addressing racism, poverty, and trauma, particularly in communities of color. Those individual and collective issues will be the subject of a virtual forum this week. WEMU's David Fair spoke with a member of the team sponsoring the event. United Way of Washtenaw County's director of corporate giving, Ebony Robinson, discusses how these issues are impacting the entirety of the county, what is being done about it, and where we go from here.

How does an online community, dominated by privileged parents, discuss its local school system? In a new report titled “We all want what’s best for our kids: Discussions of D.C. public school options in an online forum,” Brookings researchers examined thousands of messages on the D.C. Urban Moms school discussion forum to find out what they were talking about and how their conversations reflect continued racial segregation in the public schools of the nation’s capital. The report is co-authored by Vanessa Williamson, Jackson Gode, and Hao Sun. Williamson, a senior fellow in Governance Studies at Brookings, joins the Cafeteria to discuss the report.
Good Morning it's Saturday December 5th, and this is The Wenatchee World's newest podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today, we're focused on 44 year old Eastmont teacher Kai Knell who survived a near-fatal heart attack despite working out five days a week and eating healthily. Today's episode is brought to you by Equilus Group Incorporated. Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Equilus Group, Inc- Building Your Financial Success. Learn more at Equilusfinancial.com. Member SIPC and FINRA. And before we begin, do you want to share your home's holiday light display with the valley? You can add your festive decorations to our interactive map by visiting wenatcheeworld.com/holidaylights Now our feature story. At 44, Eastmont history teacher Kai Knell was a picture of health. The former Wildcat and WVC basketball star worked out five days a week and ate healthily. But on the morning of Oct. 28, his life changed. His wife Mariah found him lifeless, changing colors, and she immediately called 911. She performed CPR and once the paramedics arrived, they worked on Kai for nearly an hour, shocking his heart three times to get it beating. Kai was placed into an induced coma to prevent any further damage to his body and brain. At that time the Doctors were unsure if Kai would be able to wake up... But about 24 hours later, he awoke from the coma and completely shocked the doctors. For a healthy guy and lifelong athlete, it just did not make any sense. He wondered if he ate something bad, but he was soon diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy or ARVC which can lead to sudden death. Kai told us that “The life expectancy for males that have it is around 41. It's prone to people that are athletes or marathon runners. With that type of genetic condition, the more you exercise, the more the heart tissue turns into fat.” Now... Kai has to take medication daily and carries a defibrillator with him in case his heart stops again… and he's had to curtail most strenuous activities…. perhaps the toughest pill of all to swallow for a lifelong athlete. To read more more about Kai's journey and what the Wenatchee community is doing to help him recover, head over to www.WenatcheeWorld.com. His dedication to family and community landed him a spot on this year's 30 Under 35 list, the Wenatchee Valley Business World program that honors young professionals well on their way to being community leaders. Bendito-Zepeda's work ethic is inspiring and at 23, just one year out of college, he purchased a home for his parents and two younger sisters. He has since added a second house, with plans to purchase more. He told us that his parents, who are immigrants, have always been there for him. And said that “I kind of kept that in the back of my head. They moved here so I could have a better life.” Bendito-Zepeda said he's also planning to expand his mission to provide stable living environments and quality homes for low-income families on government assistance Finally, some local history, Wenatchee Valley History is brought to you by NABUR – your trusted neighborhood community. NABUR is a free online forum you can trust to connect with your community, focus on facts & make a difference. Join the conversation! Visit wenatcheeworld.com/nabur. Alex Dreyfus, originally from France, now living in Malta, one of the betting and Blockchain hubs of the world. Alex is a true serial “net-preneur”, having started several internet related businesses, exited some successfully and struggled with some others. We are diving deep into the world of Blockchain, Tokenization (Club Token) and his current platform Socios.com powered by ChiliZ. Alex, is raw, open and shares it like it is (enjoy the colourful language). Key Highlights Started off as a computer geek in his hometown in France, first computer at the age of six and build his own Online Forum at the age of 14 Left school at the age of 18 without any degree & without parents approval, in 1995, created his first company Mediatis which he sold later to Publicis Group Next act, Webcity.com – initial great success and then company went bankrupt (lesson, not as important to be first….) Took a short term job to survive and then started working on his next move, WINAMAX , online poker and sports betting website targeting France (license from the UK) Sold his shares due to conflict with partners and moved to Malta (2006) and started Chiligaming – Chilipoker – online betting Sold business six years later to listed US company (Bally Technologies now called Scientific Games, listed company) Next founded Global Poker Index, global poker ranking (ATP of Poker) – started to create a “sports like product” - Global Poker League (only lasted one year, currently on hold) Learned the importance of monetization of fanbase and that's how ChiliZ got started Love hate relationship with Crypto initially – anti-Bitcoin before he started to understand the tech behind it while working on Esports and Fan engagement ideas ChiliZ – raised US$ 66 million through private placement in first half of 2018 (at the height of ICO's, before crypto crash). Got timing right (compared to Sportsfix, Marcus' ICO in later 2018) ChiliZ is the currency of the ecosystem, the Token for activities. Also includes an Exchange to trade the token. Originally focused on Esports but gave up due to various reasons and focused on traditional Sports teams Socios.com – fintech fan engagement & monetization platforms for sports teams Vision – 99% of fans are not in the Stadium, how can you get the 99% deeper engaged using a Fan Token (creating Superfans) Having a share of voice – digital asset vs crypto currency - Fan token are not a crypto currency – Socios.com launched a year ago, 300k downloads, people buy and trade token How to buy Token on the platforms…..transaction flow Tiering of Clubs decides level of Token being put out into the market Pricing of token, initially set – fluctuation based on demand once listed What is a fan – many ways to define, Fan token purchased by Crypto enthusiasts (50%) (early adopters) and superfans (non-crypto audience) (50%) Currently token only traded on ChiliZ platform, soon tradeable outside on other exchanges US$ 5-6 million worth of token sold (not money raised as you will hear

Setting boundaries is essential if you want your membership to be productive and positive for you – and your members. But how do you do it without cutting people off, coming across as aloof or inaccessible, and how can you ensure your members are having their questions answered whilst still respecting your boundaries. It’s certainly a balancing act, but it’s one you can perfect by putting into practice some of these tips and tricks. We’ve tested and refined these approaches over time with our own Membership Academy and our members have also found these approaches to be beneficial in their memberships too. Tune in to find out how we, and many other membership site owners, set healthy boundaries with our members that benefit everyone. Essential Learning Points: Why opening yourself up to more communication can actually reduce contact overwhelm Some of the best tools and tactics we’ve used to set healthy boundaries within our membership Why setting the right boundaries will benefit your members as much as you Important Links & Mentions: https://www.themembershipguys.com/starting-membership-website/ (Is Starting a Membership Website the Right Move for You?) https://www.themembershipguys.com/tools-resources/ (Recommended Tools & Resources) https://www.themembershipguys.com/membership-forum/ (How to Add an Online Forum to your Membership Website) https://www.themembershipguys.com/tmg050-live-membership-qa-with-mike-and-callie/ (Live Membership Q&A with Mike and Callie) https://www.membershipacademy.com/ (Membership Academy) Key Quotes: “Your members will contact you and any successful membership site owner will respond when they do reach out. That’s not to say that you can’t set boundaries and that you can’t be the one to set the terms.” “When people know that they don’t have to try hard to reach you, that takes the urgency out of the equation.” “Nobody should be in a position where they send you a message and they have no idea of when to expect a response.” “Setting and managing expectations is good not just for you, but for your members too.”
Community is often the heart of membership sites but working out the best way to introduce it to your membership isn’t as easy it might seem. Often, we see debates around how to host membership communities that end up focusing on quantity of engagement, rather than quality. Quantity isn’t a bad thing, but it’s not always what you’re actually aiming for. If you want to find the signal in the noise and determine the right community model for your membership site, you’re going to need to dig a little deeper into your purpose, your membership structure, and the goals your audience have. This episode of The Membership Guys podcast will help you do that digging! Essential Learning Points: What the Signal vs Noise ratio is in communities and why understanding the differentiation is important Why understanding your membership and its purpose is key to deciding the role your community should play What we have learned (and are still learning) about our own experiments with forums and Facebook groups Important Links & Mentions: https://www.themembershipguys.com/should-you-use-a-forum-or-facebook-group-for-your-community/ (Should I use a Forum or Facebook Group for my community?) https://www.themembershipguys.com/really-need-membership-community/ (Do You REALLY Need to Add a Community to Your Membership?) https://www.themembershipguys.com/membership-forum/ (How to Add an Online Forum to your Membership Website) https://www.facebook.com/groups/membersitemastermind (Membership Mastermind from The Membership Guys) Key Quotes: “It is crucial to understand that activity and engagement are not the same thing.” “The importance of your signal to noise ratio will depend on how important community is to your membership.” “We’ve clearly defined the role of the forum and the Facebook group, and how the two connect. Because of that, we’re not experiencing any problems.” “The type of role that your community plays is entirely up to you and it’s going to be dependent on what you know will work best for your audience.”

When you’re booking your next flight and wondering about your in-terminal dining options or which seat will give you the best takeoff and landing views, check to see if you’re preferred airline has a community that can help out with those questions. Southwest Airlines does, and it might be the only online community hosted by a major airline. Airlines are always managing customer-facing and public relations issues so how exactly does one make the case for building a community? In this episode, Lindsey Duncan, who oversees the moderation and management of the Southwest Airlines Community, explains the unique relationships and conversations that it has fostered. The community thrives when it comes to topics that involve a unique point of view that can’t always be provided by a Southwest staff member. For example, help traveling with children and getting tips as a first-time air traveler. These conversations also help Southwest Airlines create memorable brand moments and long-lasting customers. Lindsay also shares: The ROI of a community-driven knowledge base Using community to connect customers and create memorable brand moments How two Southwest Community Champions connected and went on a trip to Disney together Big Quotes On making the case for community: “A customer is more inclined to believe information if it comes from another customer, or to take a recommendation that comes from another customer. … The idea [for the Southwest Airlines Community] was, we can get people more authentic information and learn more about our customers, and gain really great customer insight, and then also deflect some of the traffic from our customer service centers.” –@LDunkster Why community members return: “There’s a sense of camaraderie that develops [between the Southwest Community Champions] because they help each other out. … I think anytime you can form a real connection with somebody and you’ve got [a community] to nurture that and see it grow, as well as the fact that you are sharing in the activity of actually helping people out, they’re going to keep coming back for more.” –@LDunkster About Lindsey Duncan Lindsey Duncan is a social business senior specialist for Southwest Airlines, with a decade of experience in the airline and aviation industry. She launched and oversees the daily moderation and management of the Southwest Airlines Community, including a blog and discussion forum where customers can share experiences and knowledge. In 2018, Southwest Airlines launched Community Champions, a super user program of nine members and counting. Meet Patti Shank, author of “Write and Organize for Deeper Learning: 28 evidence-based and easy-to-apply tactics that will make your instruction better for learning (Make It Learnable)”. With Special Guest Host Karen Hyder. Patti Shank, PhD is writing the Make It Learnable series to help anyone who builds adult instructional materials (content experts, instructors, instructional designers, trainers, and so on) apply critical learning, writing, information design, and usability principles.
