In this week's Gaming Fun Fact we explore gaming devices that were adopted by the US military including Xbox 360 controllers that were used instead of an outdated periscope control system and PS3s that were combined to create a very efficient supercomputer. The handheld market is heating up with Sony looking to potentially make a splash in the largely Steam Deck and Switch dominated space. If this device does make it to market, will it run the entire PS5 collection? Or will it have its own library like the PSP and PS Vita? Xbox avatars are being sunset, a feature that used to have a lot of prominence in the Xbox 360 era, but is now largely forgotten. Avatars were re-released after their original implementation on the Xbox 360 and have never quite been the same. Honestly we kept forgetting they even existed so they will not be missed. When you use the PS app you're able to purchase games from the PS Store, but this is not the case on the Xbox app. According to Sarah Bond, this is because Microsoft is waiting for the courts to make a final decision in the "Google Play is an illegal monopoly" case. This is yet another bit added to the saga that Epic began when it took on Apple's and Google's ~30% cut of their app store revenues.

People find all kinds of new ways to use tech and devices. In 2010, the United States Air Force used 1,760 PlayStation 3 consoles to build a supercomputer for the Department of Defense. They used PS3s because it was more cost-efficient and “green.” Closer to home, we had washing machines making lassi and buffaloes using Lifebuoy. So we thought - why not find out if ChatGPT knew how to take out a peanut butter sandwich stuck inside a VCR? The caveat - the instructions should be in the tonality of the St. James Bible. That and more in this ROFL-worthy edition of Shorts. Do write in to tell us what you think at 3TB@unblox.com. OSMnotes You know I was going to be responsible and get some sleep so I can start classes tomorrow on time… But screw that! So, inFAMOUS. You can buy it, in stores! Right now! And now that PS3s are affordable-ish it’s a great game to pick up with that shiny new system. Or if you wait I guess you could get a matte  and slightly slimmer system. Either way, it still looks like a George Foreman Grill. This is a totally legit mock up I spent HOURS making! ... Or minutes. Michael Bay's Transformers 2 Sneak Peek. Kindle DX Pisses Off Blind Students. Sony Can Give All PS3s PS2 Emulation—But Probably Won't. Band Uses iPhone Gimmick to Get Attention (and Succeeds). Anyone who still hasn't seen the movie might want to skip this spoiler-riddled "preview" presented by the master of explosions, crashes, booms and more explosions himself, but it's a must see for everyone else. We didn't post it because we didn't want to give anything away. [ YouTube ]. Students at Arizona State University know that the college-bound Kindle DX can read texts aloud. Only trouble is, it won't read menus out loud. Good goin' there, Beez. Bottom line: Until the menus are covered by text-to-speech, the blind students are going to fight it. We'll cover it if it becomes a federal case, or if Amazon caves and hires some accessibility programmers. [ ASU - The State Press ]. A recently discovered Sony patent from late last year shows how the Cell processor found in all PS3s can fully emulate the Emotion Engine required to run PS2 games, so no matter what model you have, you'd be able to play any game you owned. But don't dust off your old God of War disc just yet—why would Sony wait this long to get you this particular feature, and to get you jazzed about games that by definition they can't profit from? Our verdict: Ain't gonna happen. [ Siliconera via CrunchGear ]. A band I've never heard of (The 88. anyone? anyone? Maybe I'm just old) decided to record an entire song using a $10 four-track iPhone recording app called Four Track. Although technically you could probably line in a decent mic, they even used the iPhone's microphone. Studio engineers will tell you that that's not the best way to get a top-40 sound. But hell, it got them a USA Today story with photo, so bully on studio engineers. The song isn't even that bad—course, I'm listening to it on laptop speakers. [ USA Today ; iTunes Store link ].

The only time people visit arcades these days is when they're waiting for the 8:30 showing of Transformers to start. Whether it's convenience of quality of games, people just aren't going. But what if it came to YOU?. Games2U puts PS3s, Wii and Xbox 360 games inside of a van and delivers it, letting 20 people play no matter where you are. We can imagine it being useful for kids' birthday parties , tailgating parties or funerals; especially since the company also offers laser tag and giant hamster balls. And if you think this is a good and viable business opportunity, they even offer franchise options to set one up where you live. [ G2u via Kotaku ].
