According to the Atlantic's Yoni Applebaum, America is STUCK - literally and otherwise. In his new book Stuck: How the Privileged and the Propertied Broke the Engine of American Opportunity. Appelbaum argues that America faces not just a housing crisis but a mobility crisis, with prohibitively expensive housing in prosperous areas preventing people from moving toward opportunity. Applebaum traces how zoning laws, initially driven by racism and classism, have created a system where Americans move less than ever before, despite more wanting to relocate. This decreased mobility has wide-ranging consequences for civic engagement, social cohesion, and economic dynamism. On December 14, 1979, one of the most important albums in rock history was released -- an album that confirmed that a new musical and cultural revolution called punk had truly arrived. Randy Renaud has the story behind the Clash album London Calling for its 45th anniversary on the Chronicles of Rock.
The book was fictional, but a perfect reflection of the treatment I had received since arriving to New York City; nothing was free, and it was almost as if the incessant hazing, entrapment, harassment, and terrorism had been at the cost of my own clarity— no longer could I trust another human being, ever. if these fictional ballerinas could do such horrible things to one another, what could their equally as devious adult counterparts do in order to disarm a potential threat—and if this was the simple and evil way women dealt with one another on a competitive level, how much potentially deadlier could make adults be in targeting potential peers, especially of opposite genders, and particularly—of thr opposite race. I wished race had no impact on anything, but in the United States, as the underlying cause of all conflict, it actually seemed to be at the root of everything. Next was money, and it would be ignorant to say that the two hadn't become so drastically intermingled with each other, the least of it belonging to colored people, and the most of it belonging to the dominant source of global power, the whites. Still, the way that people seemed to move was almost a color coded system in itself, and it seemed as though the pawns most often moved around the map in certain ways were almost always one thing or another, and now, understanding the way that politics were more likely than not conducted in this same way— I had collected, by studying the personal-professional lives of fictional adolecent ballerinas, I kept my head down, and my nose out of it—with no intention at anything besides getting out of New York alive, and put together—knowing that the possibility of my making any real money at all might have been some sort of threat itself, to any opposing party. The whites, as it seemed, would only ever be comfortable in a world where they had more, and better—at all times, and always. Nothing any colored person could ever come close to what they had maintained as their own world; everything was a system kept intricately in place—movement outside of this grid of power was not only forbidden, but nearly impossible. It was psychological terrorism, but because of its being carried out in New York City, it was almost the easiest thing to hide, masquerading the terrorism as the normal sounds of an only partially gentrified busy intersection—but I knew better. I knew that my phone and documents had been compromised long ago, along with my emails and messages— and I knew that, depending on what I was doing, where I was placed in my apartment, or even what I was writing, the incessant engine reving, the motorcycles racing up and down the block or otherwise just in circles, the cars honking and other sounds made with the direct intention of intercepting my personal frequency—was tactical warfare. Once the recording of these events became frequent enough, the sounds had moved only just further away as to be still audible and to disturb my peace, but just out of the range that my iPhone could continue to gather evidence to take to court against the owners of the garages, the city, or even the property management, for having not maintained the peace in the area surrounding their buildings. Still, it was of no coincidence quite obviously that I had been placed here purposely, and that the carlot, the motorcycle garages, the car garages and their respective car clubs, and the auto repair shops all adjacent and within dysfunctional earshot had been created after the year in the homeless shelter where it had been gathered, my sensitivity to sound and synesthesia could be used as weapons in order to dismantle and disable me. The moral reprocussions of these ugly little men on bikes or the even uglier ones in cars were none more then the soldiers that were just as often placed on the front lines of any war— a tactical betrayal of peace and freedom, I could only gather that this operation perhaps intended to pursuade that I should abandon my creativity and instead pursue with passion the humanitarian interests I was capable of, or maybe even political, however—because these things were being carried out in such an in humanitarian way, I became less interested in anything having to do with it, and it only made them more stupid and dirty, lowly and evil like the snakes they were, now that I had rearranged my furniture to always have my backs facing them. Now, not only were they below me, but behind me; once and for all positioned in such a way of knowing that everything they did on the outside of this apartment was underhanded, cold and treacherous, and against the forces of God and of nature. My right to peace and privacy has been violated, and now, worse, my body had been attacked. They were no better, no smarter, and no more powerful than the weakest men on earth—men who could do nothing themselves, but be made to do by others, subsisting entirely by consumption— the product of the light and enchantment had had been wasted with the minimal effort of having created such as these, otherwise useless creatures. The less I chose to interact with people on this level, the less opportunity it gave them to attempt to penetrate my mind or dismantle it am any way, psychological or otherwise. I had become seemingly erratix and unpredictable, moving about at times and in directions that couldn't necessarily be pinpointed— but the more time I spent away from these hostiles, the less erratic I actually was, able to think with clarity and move with stealth, only appearing at the surface for air every once and awhile, and realizing how remarkably desperate the groups that had been stalking and harassing me for to get my attention. It must have been military, and being stalked particularly by men not just simply smoking cigarettes, but intentionally going out of their way to smoke them and blow the smoke into my face— people almost needing to catch up with me or end up in my line of sight and however, it had become easy to avoid them, finally having realized that at this point, most of the time— even I didn't know where I was going. My dismissiveness made me harder to track, and my indecision had suddenly become an asset. I was always ahead of the people who were sent after me in one way or another, and besides the plants in my own building, making themselves obvious as gangstalkers by their particular way of dress and behavior— it was impossible for anyone to understand my way of thinking anymore, because it wasn't in a straight line, nor was it on any grid of systematic standard. I was almost always offline, and off grid, which meant that the people who were online and on grid were of greater number, and more predictable — instead of being moved around, I was the one moving things. I knew that anybody with a cellphone—almost everybody— had to have been connected to something—something that I wasn't connected to, especially moving about, and so the movement and frequency of these beings differed so greatly from my own it was as if playing a two player game in which the other player is simply a computer. The algorithmic nature of things just as often caused me to think about Joel Zimmerman as it did anything in life, and it was just as likely that the more time I spent thinking of anyone or anything fondly enough, then would appear in public anyone that looked just enough like them to momentarily trick my brain out of reason, and typically even more a tiny blonde girl just beside them to remind me of the pecking order of the evil world. Aurumin Ltd (ASX:AUN) MD Brad Valiukas tells Proactive the company has expanded its footprint adjacent to the 881,000-ounce Sandstone Gold Project through the grant of three new tenements at which the company hopes to source further gold mineralisation. Tenements E57/1294, E57/1302 and E57/1371 have been granted at Sandstone, which is part of Aurumin's Sandstone Operations also including the Birrigrin and Johnson Range projects with a total resource of 946,000 ounces. Many homes in Portobello date back to the Victorian or Edwardian eras. Those in the centre of Edinburgh are much, much older than that. They were fit for purpose in those days – but, with climate change a growing issue along with ever increasing energy prices, they are no longer energy efficient. We could either pull them all down and lose all the architectural heritage that makes this city of World Heritage site – or find a way to improve them, to retrofit them, in the jargon. Dr. Colleen Stockmann of the Gustavus Art and Art History Department on her background and path to art historian, including her undergraduate years at a liberal arts college, the unplanned origins of her PhD research on the plant drawings of William Trost Richards, her work on the landscape history of tenements in New York City and histories of color in the early modern world, the objects audit she is conducting with students at Gustavus, and “visual complicity” in and “visual solutions” to problems that confront us today.

I had a wonderful time sitting down with Mona, my first Supervising Physician when I graduated PA School, to talk about a variety of topics related to patient care and the medical experience. Examine patients; take medical histories; prescribe medications; and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. They counsel patients on diet, hygiene, and preventive healthcare using evidence based medicine. 2018 Median Pay: Wage is equal to or greater than $208,000 per year (or $100.00 per hour). Educational Degree: Doctoral Degree (8 years of College on Average) Number of US Jobs in 2016: 713,800 Job Outlook 2016 - 2026: 13% (Faster than Average) *Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, Physicians and Surgeons Incredible Video by Brene Brown on Empathy Urgent Care - Walk-in clinics focused on the delivery of acute care in a dedicated medical facility outside of a traditional emergency room. Urgent care centers treat injuries and illnesses that are not serious enough to require an emergency department visit. Medical Residency - Training after graduating from Medical School. Minimum of three years for primary care physicians and some other specialties, but up to five years or more for some surgical specialties. Biochemistry - The study of the chemical processes within and relating to living organisms. Internal Medicine - The medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Primary Care (AKA PCP or GP [General Practice]) - Day to day healthcare given by a provider including health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, and patient education. Mammogram - The imaging process using low-energy X-rays to examine the breast for diagnosis and screening, commonly with the goal of early detection of breast cancer. Anxiety - Intense persistent, or transient, excessive worrying and fear about factors not usually fear inducing. Depression - Medical illness with a variety of symptoms with the main one being a depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, may cause significant impairment in daily life and may result in suicidal attempts if severe enough and untreated. CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) - Blood test that generally includes Albumin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), Calcium, Carbon dioxide (Bicarbonate), Chloride, Creatinine, Glucose, Potassium, Sodium, Total Bilirubin and Protein. Different from a Basic Metabolic Panel in that it usually includes Liver Enzymes of Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST). SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) - Very common class of medication used for depression and a variety of other mental health issues. Acid Reflux (AKA “Heartburn” or GERD [Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease]) - Usually due to excessive eating, laying down after eating in bed, or medication related in which there is a burning sensation in the chest, very common and may lead to further damage or cancer of the esophagus if untreated. Stages of Grief (Kubler-Ross Model) - Progression of emotional states experienced by both terminally ill patients after diagnosis and by loved-ones after a death. The five stages are chronologically: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The stages vary in duration depending on the person and not everyone experiences all five stages. GI (Gastroenterology) - The branch of medicine focused on the digestive system. Prilosec - Common Proton Pump Inhibitor that is used to treat GERD. Lipase - Pancreatic enzyme (used in the digestion of food) in which it is elevated due to alcoholism, medications, pancreatic cancer, and other reasons. Numbers Need to Treat - Average number of patients who need to be treated to prevent one additional bad outcome. Colon Cancer - Cancer of the large intestine, at times may not be apparent until a perforation (hole in the colon) or bloody stool occurs. Sepsis - A potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body's response to an infection. Extubate - To remove the endotracheal tube (breathing tube) when someone is ventilated (on a breathing machine). May be removed as they are improving and no longer need it, or when the determination of brain death has been made to allow the patient to die. Subdural Hemorrhage - Blood gathers between the inner layer of the dura mater and the arachnoid mater of the brain, generally related to trauma and may be life threatening. Blood Culture - A critical lab that checks for blood infection from bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms. Having a blood infection is a condition known as bacteremia. Hospitalist - Medical Provider responsible for care of a patient admitted to the hospital. CHF (Congestive Heart Failure) - Heart’s inability as a pump to maintain blood flow to meet the body's needs. Signs and symptoms often include shortness of breath and leg swelling. Pneumonia - Infection of the lung, may be life threatening, usually due to bacteria, but may be fungal, chemical, or viral in nature. “Crashing” - A slang term used to describe a patient who is doing poorly and may be imminently dying soon. May include severely low blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, or issues breathing as a few common examples. 8 on 13 off - Working 8 days in a row of 10 or 12 hour shifts, then having 13 days off. Often a 7 on 7 off schedule is common. Scrubs Patient Advocacy - Doing what is best for the patient in all facets of care provided. Listening to and understanding their needs. Renal Failure - May vary in severity from mild to “end-stage” kidney failure. May include leg swelling, feeling tired, vomiting, loss of appetite, or confusion. May require the person to be on dialysis. Vancomycin - A very strong antibiotic used to treat a variety of infections, may be used intravenously or by mouth. Drug Trough - The lowest concentration reached by a drug before the next dose is administered, often used in therapeutic drug monitoring. Tenements TB (Tuberculosis) - An infectious disease often caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body. Great Depression Era Aflotoxin Aspergillus Flavum Mold - A fungal toxin that commonly contaminates corn and other types of crops during production, harvest, storage or processing that may cause cancer. PA (Physician Assistant) - Providers who practice medicine on teams with Physicians and other healthcare workers. They examine, diagnose, and treat patients autonomously and as part of a team in all various specialties of medicine. On average a Master's level degree of education. MA (Medical Assistant) – A health professional that works along side a medical team in an inpatient or outpatient setting. NP (Nurse Practitioner) - A nurse practitioner is trained to assess patient needs, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests, diagnose illness and disease, prescribe medication and formulate treatment plans. They may work in a solo practice independently or they may work within part of a hospital system. They graduate from a Master's or Doctorate level medical program. OR (Operating Room) - Where surgeries take place. Reimbursement - Payment for care provided. Medicare - Government provided healthcare insurance to those over 65, young people with disabilities, and people with end stage renal disease. On-Call - Being ready and available to go into the hospital to provide patient care or answer medical questions while being away from the hospital/clinic. Insulin - Hormone the pancreas produces to help metabolize food for absorption and often either does not work or is not produced in diabetics, thus they may need external insulin. Scribe - Entry level medical personnel responsible for charting medical provider-patient encounters in real time, such as during medical examinations to assist the person in seeing more patients over a time frame. Homeopathy - A medical system with it’s foundation believing that the body can cure itself or with the use of tiny amounts of natural substances, like plants and minerals. Pulmonology - A medical specialty that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract. Human Genome Project Neurology - The area of medicine focused on the nervous system. This includes the nerves, brain, and spine. Psychology - The science focused on personal behavior and the mind, including conscious and unconscious process, as well as feeling and thought. MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) - Standardized test used for students trying to get into Medical School. Her newest book, Tenements, Towers & Trash: An Unconventional, Illustrated History of New York City, was published by Black Dog & Leventhal/Hachette in Oct 2017, for which she won the 2018 Brendan Gill Prize. Julia currently does monthly comics and illustration for the New Yorker and her work appears semi-regularly in publications such as the New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, the Believer, and Medium. Her latest book, Tenements, Towers and Trash is a veritable love letter to New York City, written after the cartoonist had moved back home to California. The book is a history of the city, told through obsessively detailed architectural renderings of buildings. It the same funny cartoon story telling that put her on the map in her long running strip, Fart Party, while exploring far more meticulous black and white line drawings. Learning about life & death in Dublin's shocking tenements. Guest Terry Fagan tells the story of his incredible Inner City Folklore Project. He also generously shares – from his archive – a first-hand recorded account describing how death came to so many young tenement children. Terry is pictured here holding a donated 'death set' kit which is over a century old. Her new book, Tenements, Towers and Trash: An Unconventional Illustrated History of New York City, came out earlier this month from Black Dog and Leventhal Publishers. As the subtitle suggests, this is a different kind of history, a guide to the Big Apple's present as well as its past, investigating its architecture, its businesses, its facades, its entertainment venues, and the many colorful figures who have populated its boroughs. The guys talk with Julia about how different this book is from her previous works -- e.g., Drinking at the Movies, The Infinite Wait and Other Stories, Fart Party -- which are primarily autobiographical. For this project, the author considered herself an urban explorer, forgoing the inward gaze and focusing instead on the city that she called home between 2007 and 2016. Tenements, Towers and Trash includes a variety of stories that compose its past, and punctuating the text is a series of before-and-after illustrations of storefronts and city blocks that underscore New York's ever-changing nature. This isn't a nostalgic look back at what once had been, but a chronicle of a dynamic urban space in the process of becoming. And of course, the book has more than its share of Julia's poignant, even laugh-out-loud, humor.

In Steamboat School (Jump at the Sun, 2016), an historical picture book based on true events, author Deborah Hopkinson recounts the story of Reverend John Berry Meachum’s brave act to defy an 1847 Missouri law designed to prohibit African American children from attending school. This fictional account is told from the point of view of a young boy who is at first a student at Meachum’s secret school, which held in a church basement. But when the Missouri law is passed and it is no longer safe to continue teaching the students there, Meachum enlists his students and decides to build a steamboat to house a new, legal, school set afloat on the Mississippi River and thus on federal property. The book concludes with a nonfiction afterword about Reverend Meachum’s life and the research behind the book. Deborah Hopkinson is the author of more than 40 books for young readers including picture books, middle grade fiction, and nonfiction. In her presentations at schools and conferences, she helps bring history and research alive. Her work is especially well suited for STEM and CCSS connections. Her nonfiction includes Courage & Defiance, Stories of Spies, Saboteurs and Survivors in WWII Denmark, Titanic: Voices from the Disaster, a Robert F. Sibert Award honor book and YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction honor book, and Shutting out the Sky, Life in the Tenements of New York 1880-1924, an NCTE Orbis Pictus award honor book and Jane Addams Award honor book. The Eleventh: "Speedway".In our new show recorded surprisingly soon after the last one (we must have been confused and thought another year had passed), Faither sets forth on another aimless trek along the dusty annals of his withering memory. This time it's about entertainment in ol' Glesca, including going to the Shawfield Dogs and Speedway, roller-skating at the Denny Pally, and crossing aloofly whilst skating in Crossmyloof.We also start down a road we've been avoiding for some time, as we've known it could very well lead to endless soapboxing and statistical analysis - yup, fitba makes its first appearance, and halfway through we sensibly decide to put it off for another show, so if you hate the subject, feel free to skip the next one!
The Twelfth: "Potatoes".Coming only 18 months following our last venture into cyberspace, Faither and I bring you our promised episode about football. Well, except it's actually about food. The Tenth: "Rabbits".In this, the tenth instalment of our regular fortnightly podcast, Faither yaps about holidays in and around Glasgow. So as you can imagine, this involves stories about hunting for small change on the beach, skinning rabbits at scout camp, and, of course, saving up all year to afford a taxi ride to the train station. Nowt like today's expensive breaks to sunnier climates for him, no siree. The Ninth: "Muscular".This one was supposed to be all about Glasgow's unfortunate tag as the "No Mean City", but as expected, we digress into the usual nonsense including the Burns Howf and the Muscular Arms, Maggie Bell and Stone the Crows, playing "jorries" and working out what "gird wi a cleet" means. Charlie gets corrected once again by our ever-vigilent listeners, and we yap about the only cinema in Glasgow that was located up a close.Don't worry though, we do manage to cram in a minute or two about the dark crimes and gangs of old, and Charlie even recalls with fondness the only time he was beaten up as an adult. So it all ends well really...
The Eighth: "Dizzy".In an embarrassing family meltdown of an episode, Faither takes us through his drunken exploits at the Majestic, the Locarno and various other haunts from ol' Glesca in the 50s and 60s, including what happened when the dance halls closed and everyone staggered into midnight mass.This one was supposed to be all about music though, so as usual, that guarantees that we stay on the subject for at least two minutes. The Seventh: "Beatstalkers".So after six episodes bursting with many droning tales of lacklustre 'lore in ye olde Glesca, Faither finally gets into his stride. This one marks the start of no doubt twenty shows about his life in music. We start off here yapping about Radio Luxembourg and the pirates of Caroline; we dance around the old Eglington Plaza and the Maryland Jazz Club; get out the old Dancette to play the dusty 45s and 78s; listen to Victor Silvester, Dean Ford and the Gaylords, and, well, a ventriloquist on the radio; and finally sit down before the TV to watch the 6.5 Special and reminisce about getting beaten up at school for defending Tommy Steele.Music to your ears? Erm...
The Sixth: "C'moangetaff".Out of the depths of silence and the choppy seas of disinterest, comes our new instalment of rambling Glasgow folklore, proving that after a truly unearned Summer break, we're finally back to work. And this one's all about ra graftin: going to the steamie and making up the coal fire in the morning, putting on your first pair of long trousers and a decidedly dodgy sweater, getting treated like a glorified slave at work, before getting fired for annoying the wife of the boss and ending the day scrambling back to yer mammy in the pitch blackness of the tenement.A grand day's work in Glasgow indeed. After all that, some might suggest another break would be a great idea!
The Fifth: "Peas".It's been a while, so to treat you all for waiting so patiently, this time around we've made sure to talk about the usual nonsense. There's a wealth of useless memories about eating mushy peas at the Barras, playing 'stage coaches' in a coalbunker, the magnificent toys you used to get for handing over rags in the street, why the Broons became the world's first reality series (way before those crazy Osbournes got in on the act), why Faither should have built his career on designing bikes, and there's even some introduction to future episodes where he'll try and convince you that he was the precursor to the Beatles.A welcome return? Err...
The Fourth: "Fleapit".Once again we run out of time yapping on about the street games of old in Glasgow. Maybe it's because we diverge into wandering tales of camping in Benderloch and faither's early romantic liasons (ahem...), but at least we manage to cram in some stuff like playing 'P or a K' and 'Red Car' in the street, the local boxing club in Townhead and going to the Saturday morning swimming baths before picking up a well-earned penny bag of broken biscuits from the local baker.What will really attract your attention however, is Charlie's living-on-the-edge story about keeping a notepad of the street's car licence plate numbers! We cap it all off with some chat about the cinemas of old like the Grafton and the Casino, but no doubt we'll spill all of this nonsense into the next one as usual.
The Third: "Sugarolly".This time around it's all about the street games in old Glesca. We hear all about the wee toerags wreaking havoc with the tenement folk tying their doors together with rope, catching hudgies at the BRS depot in Lister Street, being chased by Limpy Dan from the Kennedy Street playground, making what sounds to have been a very early poor man's version of soda stream drinks except with a particularly dodgy ingredient, and playing endless football through dinner which consisted of jeely pieces thrown down by the parents from the windows above.Ah yes, you might get your PS3s and your HD TVs nowadays, but if the kids of today were to listen to this episode, without a shadow of doubt they'd choose "kick the can" or "dreep the dyke" over all your fancy technology any day. Ahem...
The Second: "Coal".This one's all about Christmas and Hogmanay in Glasgow back in the day, and I think you'll soon come to the understanding via Charlie's fading memories about the festive period, that when he was growing up in the City, the real celebration was at the Bells rather than around the Christmas dinner table.He really tries his best to call up some recollections of the homemade toys and penny caramels, visiting the genuine Santa at the old Lewis's store in Argyle Street, and saving for some Italian treats at Christmas, but what becomes clear is that back in the 40's and 50's in Glasgow, the New Year parties were far more important, with the spinning of bottles until 8am, the first footing of all the tenement neighbours, the walking through the East End to find another bash, and the strange tradition of polishing coal......That said, the main revelation in this episode is actually the choice of faither's first record, but it's probably best to keep that one quiet. The First: "Rambling".In this, the first episode of the new Glasgow Generations podcast, you'll hear Scott Docherty talk Glasgow with his dad, Charlie Docherty. You'll hear lots of rambling bits and pieces about the Townhead area Charlie was brought up in, some of the bombs that either exploded or didn't explode in the City during WWII, a little about the teacher's strap & punishment exercises, oh, a great deal about banana rationing!
