Another week, another huge release for 2023. We spend MOST of the first segment this week talking about Insomniac's Spider-Man 2; a bold, polished sequel that delivers on almost every front. As it happens, it almost over-delivers with it's new wing-suit mechanics. After that, we ponder the current state of Insomniac and hypothesize about their upcoming Wolverine game. In the second segment, Brad gives us the rundown on two new indie releases worthy of your time and attention: Killer Frequency (Happy Halloween!) and Laika: Aged Through Blood - a game that feels like Trials HD and Castlevania had a brutally challenging baby... EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal -> https://nordvpn.com/rtg Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee! I remember when Castle Crashers first released on the Xbox 360 back in the day. I really wanted to play it, but none of my buddies were into a game like this, and I assumed playing it alone would suck. All these years later, I've finally spent a few weeks with it, and it's frigging awesome. Playing alone isn't that bad, and I finally have people to play it with, too! It slots in to a pretty high spot on my favourite beat 'em up games of all-time, and I'm pretty jacked to finally be giving it a turn in the RTG spotlight. Long time hot dog, Holms, sponsored this episode, so he swung by the show to explain why he likes Castle Crashers so much, and to talk about what it was like carrying me through. couple games. And then my good buddy Tyler makes his return to the show to get into the countless hours he spent crashing castles back in the day while also schooling me on the history of Newgrounds (I'm such a boomer...). This game kicks ass, and I hope this episode of the show does it justice! And before we crash castles, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This week, someone asks if there are any games I regret playing for the podcast. Do I have any old gaming habits that I haven't been able to shake? And I answer the trillion dollar question: sandwiches or burritos?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 OG Xbox Arcade games: Trials HD, Shadow Complex, and Braid. Are you on social media? Of course you are. So follow us! My guest today is Jon McKellan, one of the founders of NoCode studios, creators of Stories Untold and Super Arc Light. Previous to setting up his own studio, Jon spent many years in a band, before getting working in AAA game development on games like Alien Isolation and the now infamous APB. We talk about his work at these studios, including being there when Realtime Worlds folded, and the human as well as financial impact this can have. We also hit on the job of a lifetime working on the Alien franchise, and why he ended up leaving a job at Rockstar Games to form his own studio. We talk about early loves on the Amiga and Atari 2600, why Dead Rising doesn't get the credit it deserves, the demands of being a mayor in Star Wars Galaxies, the muscle memory of Wipeout, why all open world games should let you turn off the collectibles and the heart breaking truth behind Super Mario Kart path finding. Episode 2.7 of Brake For Frogger was actually discovered caked in dust at the back of a shelf somewhere (possibly due to being underpowered and having a lack of third party support). At last, after plenty of delays and various setbacks we're back again. This episode starts with a fan e-mail, the 'What You Been Playing' section covers Tom's near addiction to MMORPG Rift, Cam's raiding of the second hand section, Euan's sweary shooting time with Bulletstorm and Alan gritting his teeth over Trials HD. We also have a half hearted attempt at a news section which doesn't end well. Curzon and Marwood finally get their Co-Op Shop back up and running (sorry for leaving it so long boys, back regular now yeah?) and Alan opens his Retro Games Emporium with the words 'Yipeekiay!'. Enjoy.
We have returned and are about to go a bit retro. Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Justin are in search of a list of fair competitive video games across all of the eras to create new game tournaments for our listeners and for upcoming Horrible Night Outs. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow We will not be dettered by failed recordings. The Horrible Show is back because before we talk about video games, we know you wanted to hear all about Cole’s reality TV adventures and wherever else the Threesomes of the Week takes us. Actually, we hope you survived the Threesomes enough to make it to our favorite multiplayer memories and our On the Spot question. Where we bring to light the age old question of why would you play Madden when you can play NFL Blitz? This is all of course just to set the mood as we have a real mission this week: to come up with some compelling classic competitive games for game tournanments for our listeners and potentially for upcoming Horrible Night Outs. It’s a veritable free-for-all as we look at games we grew up and onto some current favorites. Which Smash Bros is the best choice? Is Geometry Wars 2 better without shooting? Maybe puzzle games are better than we think they are. Is StarCraft II even an option for new players? I’m sure we don’t have the answers, but we did get a great list out of our discussion. Let us know what games we missed so we can continue build some compelling contests in the near future. Then, we can’t help but announce the next Horrible Night Out on July 8th as we return to Net Heads where we hope to game with our Indy listeners and their friends. On our way off the air, an epiphany strikes Cole and Justin G as they finally discover a use for handheld gaming devices. Let’s talk about something we aren’t close to being qualified for, remaking video games. Justin, Cole, Ethan, Gifford, and Christina throw out their ideas for and break your memories of X-COM, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Blast Corps, and Eternal Darkness. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow We’re not going to pretend that we know what we are talking about, but the fact is we love a lot of games and have ideas on what would make them better to us. Of course we can’t get to those ideas without goin off-topic first with our Threesomes of the Week and Christina’s adventure into voice acting against a 4 year-old. The On the Spot question asks if remakes should stick to their original’s genres which begs the question, what the hell happened to StarCraft: Ghost? In our first (of multiple) Remake It So discussion the cast delves into some dangerous territory by attempting to infuse some fresh ideas into fix some classics in Zelda and Final Fantasy. Then we return to the game that started this topic on the site originally by going insane over Eternal Darkness once again. We let you know what to expect for the Horrible Night Out this Friday and ask for your input into choosing a game for our next Horrible All Nighter. Cole takes us home by getting a little too excited about all of these new fighting games and Street Fighter X Tekken.
