It's hard to describe to someone who has never been there just what it feels like to be at your bottom. The word “fear” doesn't quite cover all the emotions that you feel. The big book of AA describes the Four Horseman as terror, bewilderment, frustration, and despair. Yeah, it feels like that.    Unfortunately, just getting sober doesn't mean we don't still feel these things. However, today, we don't have to get drunk or high when we feel this way. Instead, today, we can recognize that we are on our way to a visit from the horsemen and hopefully, take the appropriate action to stop them in their tracks.    This topic was inspired by the amazing warstory we got this week from Jordan. Hear how Jordan navigated his alcoholism while being a pilot and why he was no stranger to terror, bewilderment, frustration and despair. Today, through the grace of a higher power of his own understanding and a program of recovery, he lives his life to help others and stay out of his own way, which seems to be a good recipe for maintaining some sanity!    Thanks, Jordan, for sharing your story!  Check out our sponsors. Doesn't it feel like in order to get sober, we need to smash all the ideas we had about ourselves and the world around us? I know it did for us. Along with that, we had to admit that we were wrong about some things- a lot of things. But once we started believing that we could get sober, we realized anything was possible!   This week's topic is inspired by our warstory from Cathie! From an early age, Cathie always gravitated towards the party lifestyle. Hear what it took for her to realize she needed to change, and how once she began getting hope in sobriety, that hope spread to all other aspects of her life.    Thanks Cathie for sharing your story and allowing us to speak about our topic!  Check out our sponsors. When we first look at getting sober, in most cases, the pain of using has become so great that we are desperate to change. One thing they ask you in Alcoholics Anonymous is if you are now willing to go to any lengths to stay sober? The answer is confoundedly yes.    But what about those of us who have been around for a minute? Are we still willing to go to any lengths when the pain of the last drink is so far behind us? And when the thought of using or drinking becomes less and less? And if we're NO longer willing to go to any lengths, then what does that mean for our sobriety and our new way of life? Let's talk about it.    This week's topic is inspired by our incredible warstory from Mel. When you hear Mel recall his last drink, it becomes clear he is still willing to go to any lengths for sobriety, even though it was over 30 years ago. Perhaps there is more to surrendering that can carry past our initial “sobering up” moment and carry us into the life we've now found for ourselves.    Thanks Mel for sharing your story and inspiring this topic!  Check out our sponsors. Matt Bair and Ryan Hedrick are making living amends by working on their recovery every day. Whether you're new to recovery or have been at it for a while, the amends process can be challenging. In twelve-step recovery programs, two steps are dedicated to this process: first, you must become willing to make amends and then make them. Sometimes, our amends are met with resistance, and the people we care about might reject our attempts. In those moments, focusing even more on our recovery is essential. Today's Guest: Brittany Hill is the Clinical Director at The Recovery Village in Indianapolis. She specializes in art therapy and has many years of experience in clinical leadership. Brittany has managed three outpatient facilities in rural areas for a non-profit mental health organization. She has worked with children, parents, foster and adoptive families, and individuals in recovery. Brittany is passionate about creating and leading engaging group sessions for both patients and staff. Discussions and Timestamps:  13:21 - 13:33 - Introduction to Brittany Hill 13:45 - 14:05 - The process of forgiving can be painful and complex. Caregivers need to acknowledge their feelings, which is an important first step. 14:07 - 15:12 - Dealing with the onset of emotions that come with the initial forgiveness process. This may be the most challenging time in your loved one's recovery. 15:14 - 16:22 - Recovering addicts want immediate forgiveness, but this doesn't happen. Compassion and patience are important for caregivers, especially when repeated betrayals occur. 16:29 - 18:43 - Ryan shares a friend's story about wanting to be forgiven. Brittany offers suggestions for dealing with setbacks when forgiveness is not accepted. Professional help is strongly recommended. The caregiver needs to acknowledge their loved one's recovery. 18:55 - 20:13 - For caregivers willing to forgive but facing resistance from other family members who are skeptical about the addict's recovery or intentions, it's important to work on yourself behind the scenes, such as seeing a therapist, to gain the tools needed to handle such situations. 20:30 - 21:48 - Recovery is a journey that sometimes includes relapses. Your loved one may try their hardest to recover but then experience a setback. How will this affect you? What does this mean for their recovery? Does their relapse signal that you can't trust them? 22:00 - 23:00 - Brittany Hill offers a message of hope. Early on in recovery, we learn just how sick we are. Hopefully, we also learn that its not our fault and that we don't have to stay that way. But a big pill to swallow can often be this idea of a higher power. What does it mean to have your own concept of a higher power? And why is it important to getting and staying sober? In this episode, the boys get into this sometimes controversial topic.    This week's topic was inspired by an amazing warstory from Diana. Diana grew up in a house with two alcoholic parents. It took her a long time to learn just how dysfunctional things at home really were but when she did, she turned to substances to change the way she felt. Things escalated quickly, and before too long, Diana would find herself weening off one addiction by amplifying others.    It wasn't until she surrendered and let go that she began her road of recovery. Tune in to hear her talk about her journey of letting go of a "church god" to come up with a concept that worked for her and helped her to stay sober. Today, recovery principles and recovery disciplines come first.    Thank you Diana for sharing your story!   To learn more about Diana and listen to her recovery podcast, check out https://www.rprdpodcast.com/ Check out our sponsors. Guilt and shame were often the bedrock of our bottoms. Our behavior is often so shameful that the last thing we want to do is talk about it outloud. Only when we have recovered and shared that story honestly to others who are struggling do we begin to know the value of our stories.    This week's warstory is a special one.  Britnee is not only a grateful food addict but also Cameron's sister. When you hear her talk about what it was like to compromise her morals and relationships for food, you'll be sure to see the similarities in our addictions. You ever have those moments where all the sudden, you can see clearly what it is that needs to change? We've had many. And we're grateful for them all. Every moment of sobriety started with a moment of clarity. Let's talk about it.    This topic is inspired by this week's warstory from Marsha. Marsha spent a lot of her youth with an alcoholic Dad. Drugs and alcohol were just a part of life and eventually, she would find hers engulfed with the drama and panic that accompanies them. Suddenly, a moment of clarity spurred her to take some action and it began a process that would eventually lead her to a sober life, a better way of living, and a life beyond measure.    Thanks Marsha for sharing your story! We're back with another great episode from the boys. This time we're talkin' about people, places and things. Why? When we were full blown in the disease, it seemed like anything could keep us drinking. We had to take a closer look at people, places and things once we decided to get sober for good and decide who was actually at fault, and if there were some situations which we now had to refrain from.  This week's topic was inspired by the amazing warstory from Shane! Shane grew up in a small town and once he got a taste for drugs and alcohol, he was all in. In and out of treatment centers and institutions for most of his adult life, tune in to hear what it finally took for recovery to take root in his spirit. This story is fire. The boys are back with another great episode. This week, they share on the struggle of acknowledging our wins. They say humility is a cornerstone of recovery. But its not always easy to recognize the difference between being humble and having low self esteem. Through the work we do in recovery, often we're able to take a "right sized" view of ourselves. Part of that is acknowledging our accomplishments and allowing them to be. This topic was inspired by Chris who shares his amazing warstory. This week's episode is a deep one. We get into what's happened over the last year with the guys and why the topic of "Overcoming Hopelessness" makes perfect sense. Willy gets into how he relapsed with 10 years of sobriety and what it was like to come clean with his loved ones and recovery peeps. Cameron talks about finally getting his ass kicked enough to join a food program so he can stop "chewing his alcohol." As usual, we have a great warstory from Heidi who inspired this topic! We sat on this one for some time and it's fair to say, it's worth the wait. Hear her share on how things got started and how being comfortable in her own skin, required a lot of external substances. Finally, she had the spark of hope ignited by a friend who had been through it, and it was enough for her to believe she too, could change her life. Thank you, Heidi, for sharing your story! We're back!! After a long hiatus the boys are back with a new look, new episode and new sobriety dates? Listen to find out. This week we have an awesome story from someone you may all know. Dave from the Dopey podcast got with us to share his experience strength and hope. Here just how dark things can be before the dawn, and know that no matter how far down you fall, you can always get back up if you're willing to accept the help being offered to you. You are sure to get something out of it. Dave's story inspired the topic, "identifying with the disease." Though some of us may fight it, eventually we begin to make our using and drinking a part of our identity. We find ourselves among great artist and poets who may have influenced us growing up. Unfortunately, building our identity around the addiction can make it that much harder to surrender. After all, without the drugs and alcohol (or food, sex, gambling, etc) who am I? Get sober and find out. Anything's got to be better than the way we were. Thanks Dave for sharing your story! Listen to the Dopey Podcast anywhere you get your podcast. Marcel Schwantes and Robb Holman: Grieving Is the Pathway to Resilience

Robb Holman is back to co-host alongside Marcel Schwantes as they go through the rarely discussed business topic of grief. Grief has a big effect on employees at work, and Robb gives helpful tips on how organizations can be more helpful during this time."The true cost of grief in the workplace is often underestimated." [4:55] Robb walks through what The Recovery Village has to say about grieving at work. Employees need to schedule support and flexibility around grief, but many workplaces fail to address these needs openly. Daily stress levels of grieving employees can lead to poor decision-making and increased risk for things like addiction and injury."In order for people to be productive, we've got to nurture the heart." [8:53] Robb and Marcel discuss a real-life example of how grief affected a manager at work and the importance of bereavement leave policies. Grieving people need the time and space to get well. In a healthy workplace, people huddle around and support those in need. "If we want to be resilient, grieving is a topic of conversation that needs to be infused into that. If we don't, if we just continue in the name of resilience, we will run dry." [12:02] Robb discusses the importance of leaders being in touch with their own grief and mental health. When leaders have a handle on what's going on in their personal lives, they can show up better and provide more support for their staff. "I think everyone grieves differently." [13:29]   Robb highlights four unique ways people react to and deal with grief in their lives. For some, it is a very physical process. Others prefer talking to a friend or a professional or grieving through prayer and meditation. Marcel touches on the importance of finding a supportive community."The biggest resource I can offer somebody right now... is to find a support community." [14:34]  Marcel talks about what someone can find by coming to an environment where there are people to support them and love on them through the grieving process."If we want to make sure to greatly serve, encourage, and support those on our team and in our lives, it starts with each one of us." [16:42]  It's important to be aware of the different types of grieving, some of which are more subtle. Grieving doesn't always mean someone died. Layoffs and job losses can be a tragic event to process, especially if you're the primary earner in the family. Other tragic non-death events include divorce, moving to a new location, and drastic workplace changes."The most aspirational aspect of leadership is to look at the whole person and not just as an employee." [21:34] Marcel talks about how a leader shouldn't look at employees as an 8 am–5 pm transaction. If things aren't going well at home, chances are it's going to disrupt them in the workplace. Taking the time to find out what's going on in their employees' lives helps leaders be better sources of support."Remain committed with your team members, with your people, to engage in an ongoing process of how they're feeling throughout the change." [25:24]  Robb answers the mailbag segment about how to support employees through a merger or an acquisition. A willingness to be honest with emotions allows leaders to enter into a shared space with their team, which helps them feel less alone. Marcel touches on how leaders sometimes lose their identity and the importance of coming back to shared values. Mentioned In This Episode:Robb HolmanThe Recovery Village article on GriefMarcel Schwantes

It can seem like sometimes the more sobriety you have, the less complicated your life becomes. Turns out, that's not always the case. Oftentimes those of us who have been in the recovery game for some time, have had to go through several moments of redefining ourselves and reshaping our sobriety. We learn what we need to hold on to and what we can add to our daily reprieve. Whether you're 3 days sober or 10 years sober, the importance of honesty however, can not be understated.    In this episode we are joined by Fausto, the one and only. Fausto first came on our radar as someone who had immersed themselves in the recovery community and quickly became an inspirational voice for many. Today he shares some of how he has had to maintain his honesty even when he finds he is down or not feeling so great. Turns out, its more normal than we think it is to not be uppity and high spirited every second. Funny to hear the way our brains can trick us into thinking a lie would serve us better than the truth.    This week's warstory comes from Trevor who is brutally honest in his telling of constant relapse and half measures. Hear him talk about what life is like in sobriety compared to life in the throes of the disease. He has a way of accepting life today how it is and doesn't fool himself into thinking he is something he is not; i.e. a “normal” drinker. Thank you Trevor for sharing your story with us! So many times when we're in the thick of our disease, we'd go into getting clean with the wrong intention. Maybe it was to get someone off our back, intending to figure out how to moderate properly. Or maybe it was to take a break from the chaos and to clean up for a while. Whatever it was, it wasn't until we had the right intention, that we were finally able to do what was necessary to stay clean and sober.    This week, we're talking about the power of intention with a warstory from Derrick. Derrick always seemed to find his way into clicks where drinking was the norm. Whether it was sports, the army, or the party life socialites, it didn't take long for his drinking to escalate to other drugs. Lying, sneaking, trouble with the law,  and taking advantage of others are all a part of his story. Though there were many false attempts to get clean, it wasn't until he went to rehab with the intention to stay clean that he truly was able to surrender to the help the way he needed to. What does it mean to have a recovery mindset? Well, think of it this way; when we were in the thick of it, all we did was think about using. We were constantly obsessing, obtaining, or using our DOC. Today we fill that time with the tools from recovery. Service work, community engagement, and helping others are just a few things that can help us in maintaining sobriety and keeping a recovery mindset.    This week's topic is inspired by our warstory from Monica. She has found a beautiful group of people who support her in her journey as she establishes a solid foundation in recovery. Monica's use of pain pills escalated and before long she realized it had taken over. Finding a community and deciding enough was enough has given her the strength she needs to help others who may be struggling the same way by sharing honestly what her journey has been like.   Follow Monica on Tiktok and IG @Monicafromtiktok   Thanks Hellions! Why do we get sober? What happens to make us finally decide that something must be done? And what do we do if it seems like nothing is working? We try something else, that's what.    This week's episode is “never stop seeking” where we discuss the importance of finding something that works for you. Not only to get sober and also to continue to grow once you've experienced a life of sobriety. So many people find it in a fitness program, heavy spiritual practice, or intense self work; the point is we never stop. For us, it would seem there is now middle ground. Forward or backward, and that's it.    We have an amazing story this week from Matt who shared with us what it was like before he finally decided to get sober. He inspired this topic through the telling of his journey. Matt kept searching until he found something that was going to work for him. A way of living, of being that kept him successful and continuing to grow. Matt is on fire!    Thanks Hellions!   Alcohol free. Sober. Recovering Alcoholic. What's the difference? And does it really make a difference?   Today we're joined by Arielle Dyment who joined us as a special guest host from Peru. We're getting into labels in recovery. When we're new to the recovery space, we can get really caught up in the minushia. Often, the overwhelming nature of “what to do” can keep a lot of us sick. We invite you to put down the labels and pick up something useful, like a mentor or sober coach. The labels do not serve us.    This topic was inspired by a warstory from Tessa. Tessa spent most of her life thinking she was a normal drinker having gotten caught up in the mommy wine culture.  When the pandemic hit, her drinking quickly escalated very quickly. She was seeking treatment to discover what was wrong with her but it soon became apparent that she had to do something about her drinking. This thrust her down a path she could have never anticipated, sober now for 18 months.    Tessa and Arielle are both involved with a sober app called Lived which is designed to help those who think they may have a drinking problem but not sure how best to address it. Lived has information from Sober coaches and people in recovery all over the world  that will help the sober curious know how best to address their drinking.    You can download the Lived app for free at www.lived.app    Check out the Sober Mom Squad here: https://www.sobermomsquad.com/   Follow Tessa on Tiktok at tessarlowe   Thanks Hellions! Man are we grateful for our friends in recovery. Without them, it's safe to say we may not still be here. The company we keep is our biggest support system which is why it's critical to know your crew.    This week, we're paying tribute to those we've met in our recovery journey. Those people we find in the most unexpected places who have somehow found a way to shape our lives in ways we never would have thought possible. We're blessed and honored to know them. All we had to do to get them was to give up our old ideas and abandon ourselves to a power greater than “I”. Today we find that in “we.”   Our topic this week is inspired by the amazing warstory from Laurie who is someone we've met through the IG recovery community whose presence we're glad we don't have to live without today. Laurie never really liked herself for reasons unknown. Having been raised in a big Italian family, she quickly became a people pleaser. When she found cocaine later in life it seemed to be the solution to her problems. It wasn't long before she made the wise choice and gave it up in favor of a drink. Tune in to hear just how bad it got and what made her finally look at herself free of bullshit.    Today she has found support in the recovery community in her area and on-line. Was drinking really our problem? It was pretty easy to think that it was. After all, everything seemed to get worse when we were drinking or using and we couldn't seem to stop. But after a little bit of time and a lot of work it became clear that what we actually had was a thinking problem.    This week's topic comes to us from Crystal's warstory. When you listen, you'll hear how she found her way into drugs and alcohol, abusive relationships, and scary situations, all of which were only temporary relief from her real problem; her thinking. It's hard to say where the deeply ingrained voice of negativity comes from but Crystal is not unique in this regard. Today, she works to love the person she is and gets value from a 12 step program, mindset and personal development.    Check out Crystal's IG where she goes live with other inspiring people in recovery to talk about things we all have to work at. @crystalhiroko   Thanks Hellions! When that wasn't enough, the drugs took over. Each time, the current drug stopped working and so he had to turn to stronger things.  Both his mother and father were Herroin addicts as he was growing up and contracted aids. He lost both of them. Most of us have things in our childhood included in our story. An uneasy feeling, trauma, anxiety, whatever it was, usually we're able to look back on it with a different perspective than we had at the time. So today we're posing the question: “What would you tell the younger you?”   Why the topic? Well, our guest today can shed some light on that. The oldest in a Mormon famly, Aubrie grew up very sheltered and was often naive to the drug scene. She found herself rolling with the wrong crowd and hopelessly addicted to meth. Her story of recovery is proof that addiction truly can reach anyone and that ANYONE can get better.    We're honored to have Aubrie in the studio and who knows? “Your mind is a dangerous neighborhood. Don't go in there alone.”   So is it true? Are we never to be alone in sobriety? Must we be babysat like some sort of crazed maniac? Will we ever be okay to be alone?   All of the above. Being alone can be tricky in early sobriety. How do we navigate the early stages of having the drink or drug as a go-to anytime we get a spare second? Here's a hint: we don't do it alone.    This week we're talking about being alone in sobriety, a topic inspired by the warstory from Curtis! If you listen to Curtis's story you'll see how we settled on talking about this subject. Curtis spent much of his early days in sobriety trekking along the Pacific Coast Highway solo. He challenged himself everyday and had some serious time to reflect on his addiction. So it begs the question: can we benefit from alone time in sobriety?    Join the conversation on IG at @othersideofhell_recoverypod and tell us what your experience has been.    Curtis, along with Dani @sober.socially, were inspired to create the sober app which combines resources for all things recovery, fitness, and mental well being in one place. Once we get sober and stop drinking we become sane, rational individuals, right?  Wrong. Oftentimes the obsession that led us to drinking the way we did will follow us into other aspects of our lives. Shopping, gambling, money, sex, relationships and even exercise are things we can let take us over if we're not at our spiritual best. Even exercise. Yes, even exercise.    We are joined in this episode by our SoCal friend Kat S. who not only shares her warstory but knows all too well about how alcoholism can manifest in other ways outside drinking. She also happens to run two treatment facilities in California and now spends her time trying to be of service.    Kat's story is all too familiar while being completely original. So you just got sober but are feeling stagnant. You're wondering how to deal with some of the new information you've just discovered about yourself but you're unsure how best to do that. You're not alone.    Truth be told, getting sober is just the tip of the iceberg. Often we need to keep working on ourselves and that can mean looking for outside resources to do it. There's a lot of different ways to get sober but that path may not help you deal with things like trauma, anxiety or depression. Good news. If you can learn how to deal with life without drinking, you can learn how to deal with everything else that ails you as well. This is what Courtney is finding out as she moves into other programs that help her continue her journey of self-development. A lot is required to heal!   Courtney joins us to share her warstory this week and we're honored to share it with you. The drink or the drug was often a solution. It did something for us that we could not do for ourselves. In our case, it shut off our mind and allowed us to just be. For a moment we weren't comparing ourselves to others or feeling itchy in our skin. But as it does, the substance took hold and the solution became more and more of the problem.    Brett, our warstory this week, was no different. The drinking and drugging took a hold of him because he found in it a way of being that he couldn't find by any other means. Oh alcohol. At one time, you worked for us. You did for us what we could not do for ourselves! But somewhere, you changed. You began to hurt us more and more! And no matter how hard we tried we found we just couldn't quit you! Why?? You're an asshole!!!    This week we're joined by the amazing Amy C. Willis who brought with her some amazing insight into the curious relationship with alcohol. Not only is she currently a sobriety and mindset coach but she is someone who had her own mystifying relationship to alcohol which she so willingly shared with us on this episode.    Amy had a front row seat to the ugliness of alcoholism as a child and eventually turned to drinking to cope with not being able to deal with the emotions that often come with trauma. Years later, a life changing event caused her to look at her drinking with a new lens and she was able to swallow some hard truths about her relationship to alcohol.    We had so much fun Amy! “Don't take it personally!” This was a big one for us. We addicts and alcoholics seem to be a sensitive breed. We make it all about us even when it's not. Especially when it's not! We self-destruct to numb the perceived slight that comes from others. Our inability to see things as they really are can keep us sick for a long time. Today, we remember not to take things personally. Easier said than done sometimes.    Our topic this week was inspired by the warstory from Ashley! Ashley grew up in a well-meaning religious household. She abandoned her faith after a heartbreak left her questioning everything. She quickly found herself in trouble and eventually addicted to heroin. It wasn't until a prison stint allowed her to reconnect with her faith that she was able to reclaim her life. Have you ever looked at your addiction and thought, “what a gift?” No? Well, it's not something we're often able to do at first but believe it or not many people in recovery are thankful for the growth that has occurred as a result of getting sober and living a life of sobriety. This week's warstory is no different.    Hilary inspired our topic this week when she wrapped up her story with this idea that she was gifted this life as a result of recovery. After getting sober at a real early age, it hasn't always been easy for Hilary to identify with other alcoholics. She did see something in the rooms of alcoholics anonymous that kept her coming back and when she started living life on life's terms, she began to see life change as a result of doing the work. Today she prides herself on growing from every experience and it allows her to find meaning in all that life brings her way. Let's face it. Most of us have done things in our past that we are not proud of. Okay. ALL of us have done things in our past we're not proud of. Especially when we were in the throes of our addiction. Today though, we're not the same people we were when we did those things. We refuse to let our past define us.    How do we do that when some of us have some really bad shit in our past? Well…. Likely, not overnight. It's indeed a process but making peace with our past is something that we ALL do in order to have a better today and brighter tomorrow.    This week we have a hell of a warstory from Christina who shares what it was like when she was out on the streets doing ANYTHING for her next fix. From prostitution to robery, her addiction literally had her resorting to some behaviors that in retrospect seem pretty crazy, as they often do when we look at it through a sober lens. Anybody else out there suffer from low self worth? Hard to say where it comes from but this overwhelming feeling of low self worth seems fairly common amongst those who struggle with drugs and alcohol abuse. Why is that? What can we do about it? How do we overcome low self worth? It's a good question. Let's talk about it.    Our topic this week is inspired by an amazing warstory from Lauren! Lauren always had low self worth and struggled to like who she was. Having never really fit in, she found solace in a group of friends that liked her for what she could do rather than for who she was. She quickly got into drugs and turned to crime to feed her addiction. Eventually she would wind up homeless, raising a child on her own. When custody of her child was threatened she was finally able to surrender to a spiritual solution. When you hear the word “God” does it conjure up a certain image? Does it immediately bring with feelings of guilt and shame? Or is God something you've never given thought to?   Let's face it, the “God” can be a complicated relationship for any alcoholic. While a higher power seems to be a concept mostly exclusive to a 12 step program, it's fair to say that anybody who is in recovery is utilizing their own version of a higher power. So how does that work? Can a higher power really keep us sober? Can we truly come up with our own concept of “god?”   This week we're diving deep in to the idea of creating your own concept of a higher power, a topic inspired by this week's warstory from Forrest. When you hear him speak, you'll see that Forrest was raised on fire and brimstone. When he was first introduced to a 12 step program he was stuck confronting his old beliefs of what god was. Forgetting his engrained idea of God wasn't the only notion he had to abandon before he could get sober. For many of us, getting sober is a process. Though we may know we have a problem and that we need to quit, that doesn't mean it happens right away. Often, coming up with a formula to stay sober isn't something we do alone. And when we find what works, why would we ever want to change it??   Well, as crazy as it may seem, we begin to question the work we do when it seems like it isn't working like it used to. So what can we do in this instance? What does it mean if we begin to struggle even though we're staying consistent? When can we let up and coast through our recovery? All good questions. Let's talk about it.    This topic is inspired by the amazing warstory we got this week from Mike! Drugs and alcohol took Michael to some pretty dark places really early on. He bounced back and forth between parents as a kid, wearing his title of “the bad kid” with pride. Eventually he was introduced to a program of recovery. Still, he had to work up to the willingness to do what others suggested before he found a formula that worked.   As we grow in our sobriety we can be faced with some difficult situations. Oftentimes we can find ourselves needing to separate from certain people, places, and/or things. Depending on what that may be, following through may be easier said than done. BUT on the other side of that often can be a new level of growth. That's why in this week's episode we're asking, is it a breakup or a breakthrough?   This question is inspired by the warstory we have this week from Scott A.K.A.   Are you new to sobriety? Facing Rehab but unsure what to expect? Well then, we have the episode for you!   In this week's episode we thought we'd go back a bit and talk about what the rehab experience was like. Why? Because it's here that most of us are introduced to the world of recovery. Finding yourself in a rehab center can be a VERY lonely and sad feeling. But for a lot of us, this is where we truly were able to begin to believe we could get better. And hope is always a worthy subject.    This topic is brought to us by this week's warstory from Courtney. Courtney's relationship with her father had introduced her into the world of addiction long before she would venture there herself. Recovery is recovery. It doesn't matter your brand or your flavor, the result is the same; sobriety and a better quality of life. But why is Alcoholics Anonymous anonymous? And why do some people choose to recover out loud? And what are the pros and cons to both? Good questions. Let's talk about it.    This week's topic is inspired by the warstory we received from Mike. Mike is CEO of Inspire 2 Inspire, a non-profit looking to help those who suffer with addiction. With over 60 days clean and a 20 years as a professional addict, Mike chooses to recover out loud so others can see that they can walk through the struggle together. Am I truly an alcoholic? Like, for really real? How do I know? And what's it mean to be a “real alcoholic?” Good questions.    If you drank like we drank you may find yourself with these same questions. Especially if it's gotten to the point where you have some pretty “real” consequences. Our warstory this week comes from Leslie, who found herself in this exact position.    Always the rebel, Leslie found comfort and acceptance in the bottle. Having a child gave her the courage to leave an abusive relationship but it wasn't until a friend of Bill W's planted a seed that she would have the courage to leave the bottle and surrender to a solution. Hear how she lives her life today compared to what life was like in the bottom of a bottle.    Leslie inspired this week's topic of “The Real Alcoholic.” The ground floor for many of us is accepting the notion that we are a “real alcoholic.” Come along with us while we talk about what that means.   Thanks Hellians!   RESOURCES  Excellent Drugs and Suicide resource from The Recovery Village www.therecoveryvillage.com/drug-addiction/drugs-and-suicide/    If you have questions about how your condition can lead to suicidal thoughts check this out from The Recovery Village www.therecoveryvillage.com/co-occurring-disorders/suicide-hotline/   Alcoholics Anonymous online meetings  https://aa-intergroup.org/    Narcotics Anonymous online meetings  https://virtual-na.org/    Find an Overeaters Anonymous meeting  https://oa.org/find-a-meeting/    Refuge Recovery website https://refugerecovery.org/    Substance Abuse and Mental Health services  1-800-662-HELP  https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline    Suicide prevention hotline  1-800-273-8255 https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/    Domestic Violence hotline  1-800-799-SAFE  https://www.thehotline.org/    National Human Trafficking hotline 1-888-373-7888 https://humantraffickinghotline.org/   Al-Anon information (support for families) https://al-anon.org/   Follow The Other Side of Hell on all the Socials!  IG: @othersideofhell_recoverypod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theothersideofhell101  Twitter: @TOSOHellpodcast  Tik Tok: @theothersideofhell   Email us at theothersideofhell@gmail.com    For more information about the show, resources, or merch check out our website at theothersideofhellpodcast.com!   Contact us if you have ideas for a show, are interested in sharing your story, or are struggling in any way. Let go and let God. You heard this one? Yeah? So what does it mean? And how is it done? And why? What's the benefit?   When most of us our beat into enough submission to finally be open to a sober lifestyle, we quickly find out that life run on our will just doesn't work. In a 12 step program, we learn to depend on our own concept of a higher power and turn our will over. Let go and let God is a reminder that there is a god, and we're not it. He/it will allow life to unfold according to a plan outside of our control. Today, we're most grateful for that.    This topic comes from this week's warstory from Dave. Dave grew up in NY and watched alcoholism first hand with his parents. Though he swore he'd never go that route, when he did, its fair to say the lifestyle got away from him. After enough consequences he found himself in the rooms of AA. It was there that he learned the concept of letting go and letting God. Oftentimes when we get sober, it feels so good that we can get in the mindset of trying to save everyone! While our intentions are good, it's not often the best approach to just start berating everyone we see with a drink in their hands. But there is a way to spread the message that truly can help those in need. In fact, it's vitally important that we do this.    This week we're joined by L.T. Weaver, founder of Recovering Addict to talk about spreading the message. LT is no stranger to this concept. As you will hear in his warstory, he's no stranger to the dark abyss of addiction either. The ones who, in retrospect, must have been Angels in people's clothing.    This week is on fire with this topic coming from our man Jackson from Stay Stopped. Jackson came all the way from L.A. to be on the show and we're happy to share his warstory with you.    Even from a young age, Jackson never really felt like he fit in. When he discovered drugs and alcohol, his paths diverged and he started leading two lives. One was that of a doting business professional, the other of an addict-alcoholic working towards his next fix. It was easy for Jackson to justify his using when the consequences didn't come fast enough. But as you'll hear, that wouldn't last long.    Having finally surrendered to the solution, Jackson has over 6 years of sobriety and hasn't spent a bit of it in idle. Check out Stay Stopped apparel, a clothing brand he founded that delivers a positive message with the goal of unifying the once broken.    There's a lot of hope and recovery in this one!   Check out Stay Stopped on-line at www.staystopped.shop and follow Jackson on IG at  @stay.stopped    It was an honor to have you and to share your story! What happened to us is not our fault. Being alcoholic is not our fault. Becoming addicted is not our fault. BUT-it is our responsibility to do what is necessary to not let those things take us over.  We ask for the strength to change the things we can. And today, we're talking about taking responsibility for those things.    This week's topic is inspired by the warstory from Mariah! Mariah grew up in a small town in a family full of alcoholism.  She was always uncomfortable in her skin until she found her happiness in beers and boys. Does social accountability equal personal recovery?   As long as our outsides look good then who cares about our insides, right? This was often the thought we had when we were using. As long as certain boxes are checked, its okay that we're spiritually bankrupt. Boy were we wrong.    Join us this week where we talk about this thinking error and what it took to realize the truth. This conversation was inspired by the warstory this week from Dylan from the Not So Anonymous Podcast. “The only thing you have to change is everything.”   Is it possible to hang out with your drinking buddies when you're sober? How about your drug dealer? You can still talk to him right? I mean just because you're not using now doesn't mean you can't still be friends. These are nice thoughts but the reality is, the company we keep can make or break our sobriety.    This week we dive into the influence that comes from the people we surround ourselves with. The hard truth can be that if we intend to take our sobriety seriously, it's not likely that we can maintain some relationships. Does this mean we have to have some hard conversations? It could. Tune in to hear us get into it.    The topic this week is inspired by the moving story from Donny of the Not So Anonymous podcast. Donny watched what drugs and alcohol did to his family as he was growing up. He learned that this was the way to cut loose at a young age but vowed not to cross certain lines. After blowing past those he found himself a full blown opioid addict. Stinkin' thinkin'. It's been said that we can not think our way into right acting, but we can act our way into right thinking. In our case it's taken a lot for us to get away from the default mode of alcoholic thinking. And even now, it seems to be easy to slip into a default negative thought pattern. So what can we do about it? Let's talk about it.    On this week's episode we're talking about rewiring the mind, a topic inspired by our warstory from Todd K. Todd was in and out of the rooms for a long time, constantly letting his brain convince his problem wasn't with the drugs, it was the alcohol, or vice versa. The damage he was doing to himself and his family had him concede and he finally began to realize it wasn't the substances at all. It was his thinking. As we trudge the road of happy destiny, it's fair to say we may encounter some bumps in the road. Especially later in the game.  What we have found as we continue down the path is that it's important we remain open, honest, and willing. ALWAYS! If we do these things, when we hit the slump that can come with long term sobriety, we're more likely to do what is necessary as the need for more work is revealed.    This topic is inspired by the warstory this week from Martin L. of Serenitees Recovery Clothing. Most of us addicts have been through some shit. Then there are those of us who have REALLY been through some shit. Unfortunately, we addicts don't rule the market on trauma. It generally gets spread indiscriminately to those who may simply be in the wrong place and the wrong time.    This week we're talking about Thriving after Trauma, a topic inspired by a warstory from Jesi. We asked Katie to join us for this topic as she is an advocate for domestic violence. We know that there is something magical that happens when we're able to look at someone who has struggled and say to them, “I know how that feels.” Katie is someone who has been there.    Jesi had years of abuse and trauma in her childhood which eventually led her to abusing alcohol at 12 years old. She found escape in men, self harm, and reckless behavior, all coupled with drugs and alcohol. What is so appealing about alcohol that we go through the trouble of figuring out how we can drink normally? Are we drinking because we're unhappy or unhappy because we're drinking? Is alcohol relieving our depression and anxiety or masking them?    We have questions.    Lucky for us, today's guest has answers.    On this week's episode, we welcome Gill to the show. She is host of the Sober Powered podcast and biochemist whose own journey with alcohol inspired her to start answering her own questions. We're talking to her today about the effect that alcohol has on mental illness, a topic inspired by her own warstory.    From drink number one Gill felt intense shame. Eventually she would make peace with that and her drinking became a fairly normal occurrence in college. It became evident fairly quickly however that Gill couldn't seem to control her intake. Ever the scientist, she seemed determined to make it work. Failure to moderate led to dark thoughts and suicidal ideations that had her determined to put the booze down for good. What an interesting topic. Making yourself available? For what?    FOR OTHERS IN RECOVERY!!!   If there is one thing we've figured out by now, a sure fire way to get out of self is by helping others. In order to do so we must make ourselves available to those who may still be suffering. Easier said than done sometimes. Luckily, we have a great many-a-people we can look to for advice if ever we get perplexed. Oh look at that! They too have made themselves available! THIS IS HOW IT WORKS.   This week's topic is inspired by an incredible warstory from Will.  Growing up in New York, Will had a fairly normal childhood, experimenting with weed. In College, he met his match. Heroin became all he cared about and had him stealing and resorting to things he never thought he'd do to get his next fix.   Interestingly, Will always wanted to become a recovery coach and even when using was trying to attend school to pursue this career. Hear what it took for him to finally put down the needle and apply the surrender necessary to get the help he needed.    Thanks Will for sharing your amazing story! “I always thought I liked heavy metal but did I really like heavy metal?”   When we get sober it's said that the only thing we have to change is everything. For some of us that means EVERYTHING. Generally, we've been out using and drinking so long that we don't really have any sense of who we are as sober individuals. It takes going through the process of self-discovery to learn new things about ourselves.    In this week's episode we're talking about the journey of discovering yourself, a topic inspired by the amazing warstory from Alex. Having always felt different, alcohol helped her cope with the restlessness of being in her own skin. For a long time she kept her two lives separate but eventually her habits had her stealing from her employer and she could no longer keep her secret using life a secret without quitting her job and fully immersing herself into drinking and using. Eventually someone planted a seed in her that would spark a desire to get help and she was able to begin a process of figuring out who she was without the drugs and alcohol.    We're blessed and grateful to be able to share her story.    Check her out on IG for inspirational content and follow her journey at @alexy talbot_healthyxxl. This one is one for our 12 step folks. It's a long overdue topic that plays a pivotal role in any successful 12 step recovery program. Sponsorship.    What is a sponsor? Why is it important? How do you get one? Can we apply a mentorship attitude towards other aspects of our life outside of sobriety? Join us as we dive deep into that one-of-a-kind, love/hate relationship that we 12 steppers call Sponsorship.    This week's topic is inspired by our Warstory from Marty. It's fair to say Marty had to go through a lot of shit before he was willing to think a sponsor may be able to help him. Somewhere between having his stomach pumped at the ripe old age of NINE to having his front door broken down by the police, he started thinking that maybe drugs and alcohol were an issue. He was able to find someone that broke it down pretty simply for him. It's one of the hardest things we may have to do. We've felt the high that comes with sobriety. We've been on fire with recovery. We've established ourselves within our new found community. And then, relapse. Why? The why isn't as important as we may think. Truth is, we're alcoholic. We're addicts. The solution is still the same. Coming back after relapse is emotional and frightening. But, if we're lucky enough to survive a relapse, coming back can be another opportunity for us to grow.    Our topic this week is inspired by our warstory from Jim. After a rough childhood left him uncomfortable in his own skin, Jim found a solution in alcohol. His journey would have him on the streets and in jail before the end. When he eventually surrendered and decided to get sober, he was on fire for recovery. A brief relapse almost took him out but he was able to find his way back after realizing there was no hope in going back out.    Jim is the owner and CEO of Valor Fitness Clothing, a new sponsor of The Other Side of Hell. We've all had pivotal moments in our recovery; things that really changed the game for us. With a new found sense of seeking we often are able to determine action needs to be taken. Often that action can lead to true breakthroughs.   On this episode, Willy and Cameron are talking about game changers in recovery. Those people, places or things that really allowed us to change our perspective. Can't relate? Stick around long enough and you're sure to have your own. The fact that we're still alive despite the way we were living is a miracle but generally, only the first of many.   Today's topic is inspired by this week's warstory from Melissa! Melissa Steussy grew up in Kent, Washington, home of Macklemore and Sir-Mix-A-Lot. She tells stories of childhood adversity; growing up in a drug-addicted home, meeting her biological father at 15 after he got out of prison, and rolling joints with her mom's boyfriend during summer break.   Melissa was court-ordered to AA in 1998 after a DUI and has remained sober for 23 years. She sheds light on family dysfunction; what it takes to break free, and how to find healing when your emotions are misfiring from growing up in such a toxic, non-nurturing home environment.    Melissa is a 40 something orphan having lost her parents and having no siblings. She spent many years “faking it to make it” and now has embraced her rough start at life and wants to share her experience to light the way for others walking a similar path.    You can find her writing as an active columnist on Elephant Journal where she has written over 90 articles this year alone.   Follow her on IG @melsteussy and check out her articles on elephant journal at https://www.elephantjournal.com/profile/melissa-steussy/   For her blog and more info on her upcoming book check out her website! www.melissasteussy.com   RESOURCES Excellent Drugs and Suicide resource from The Recovery Village www.therecoveryvillage.com/drug-addiction/drugs-and-suicide/   If you have questions about how your condition can lead to suicidal thoughts check this out from The Recovery Village www.therecoveryvillage.com/co-occurring-disorders/suicide-hotline/   Alcoholics Anonymous online meetings https://aa-intergroup.org/   Narcotics Anonymous online meetings https://virtual-na.org/   Find an Overeaters Anonymous meeting https://oa.org/find-a-meeting/   Refuge Recovery website  https://refugerecovery.org/   Substance Abuse and Mental Health services 1-800-662-HELP https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline   Suicide prevention hotline 1-800-273-8255  https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/   Domestic Violence hotline 1-800-799-SAFE https://www.thehotline.org/   National Human Trafficking hotline 1-888-373-7888 https://humantraffickinghotline.org/   Al-Anon information (support for families) https://al-anon.org/   Follow The Other Side of Hell on all the Socials! It's been said that the first thing we put before our recovery is the second thing we'll lose. We put a lot of energy into our drinking and using. In fact, it was usually the only thing we were putting energy into. It was more important than our relationships, our jobs, or our morals and values. In recovery, it's important that we build our lives around sobriety and never forget that if we didn't have that, we wouldn't have anything.     This week's topic is inspired by Kitt's amazing warstory. Kitt found herself living a dual lifestyle upon realizing that drugs and alcohol were what she needed to cope with life. After she found her way to a 12 step program, there wasn't anything she wasn't willing to do to stay sober.   Kitt is also a compulsive overeater and works the 12 steps with both alcohol and food. So not surprisingly, just like everything else we had unlearn, lying was a big one. Being honest can be a bit of a struggle but upon doing so, we began to see the power that came with it. Honesty is what keeps us accountable and moving forward.   Our topic this week is inspired by Alika who was brave enough to share his warstory. Alika hid his addiction from those around him for twenty years and had mastered the art of lying. But as always happens, the truth was finally revealed, and when it was he felt the relief he had been chasing with drugs and alcohol. Tune in to hear his amazing story! Solidarity is defined as unity that produces or is based on community of interests, objectives, and standards. To say we have found this in the recovery community is a severe understatement. With solidarity comes love, support and strength, all the ingredients necessary for a solid recovery. One might even go as far as to say, the solidarity with in the Recovery community is a power greater than any one self.   This week's topic is solidarity and is inspired by Martin who joins us from around the globe to share his Warstory. Listen to Cameron swear that Martin is Willy's doppelganger and decide for yourself. Either way, you'll truly be amazed at just how similar we all are being that we share a common struggle despite where or how we spent our upbringing.   Martin's story is tough, gritty, and inspired. We hope it inspires you the same way it has inspired us. To get more positive vibes from Martin or if you're interested in booking a one on one with him, check out @randomguygettingfit on IG. When we began a process of recovery, we didn't know what to expect. We only knew that drinking and/or drugging was destroying us. Hopefully, we get to the point where the fear of the unknown outweighed the pain of staying in the disease.   For those of us in A.A., we hear certain promises that we'll receive as a result of working the 12 steps. Though they seemed somewhat unobtainable when compared to how things were for us, after some time of doing the work, we could see them coming true. In this week's episode Cameron and Willy talk about the A.A. promises and what they mean in their lives today.   This week's topic was inspired by our Warstory from Daniel. Daniel's story had him all over the map, in and out of prison, homeless and destitute. He finally found hope in an Alano club in Ogden, Utah and it was there where he gained the knowledge and did the work to see the promises begin to come true in his life. Hear what his life is like today!   RESOURCES:   Excellent Drugs and Suicide resource from The Recovery Village www.therecoveryvillage.com/drug-addiction/drugs-and-suicide/   If you have questions about how your condition can lead to suicidal thoughts check this out from The Recovery Village www.therecoveryvillage.com/co-occurring-disorders/suicide-hotline/   Alcoholics Anonymous online meetings https://aa-intergroup.org/   Narcotics Anonymous online meetings https://virtual-na.org/   Find an Overeaters Anonymous meeting https://oa.org/find-a-meeting/   Refuge Recovery website  https://refugerecovery.org/   Substance Abuse and Mental Health services 1-800-662-HELP https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline   Suicide prevention hotline 1-800-273-8255  https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/   Domestic Violence hotline 1-800-799-SAFE https://www.thehotline.org/   National Human Trafficking hotline 1-888-373-7888 https://humantraffickinghotline.org/   Al-Anon information (support for families) https://al-anon.org/   Follow The Other Side of Hell on all the Socials! EP 69 Drug use on the rise Drug of choice during covid 19 The anxiety surrounding COVID-19, much like the disease itself, is everywhere. Unfortunately, this has caused many people to turn to drugs and alcohol as a means of coping with coronavirus-related stress. New research conducted by the medical team at The Recovery Village, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation company, shows just how devastating the trend is. In a recent survey of 500 Florida adults, they found that approximately 80 percent of individuals reported using alcohol in the past month, more than 35 percent used marijuana, and upwards of 10 percent indicated using prescription opioids, benzodiazepines, cocaine, or prescription stimulants. Furthermore, many of these people acknowledged that they should cut back on their current consumption. "Coronavirus has sparked an uptick in drug and alcohol use based on the data we have been tracking," says Stacey Henson, LCSW, ACSW, of The Recovery Village. "The most obvious explanation for this trend is the increase in stress and anxiety that has been brought on by the pandemic." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hollywoodandchinadollshow/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hollywoodandchinadollshow/support
