Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [6:20] To drink, or not to drink[9:41] Reversing shame and judgment and shared experiences[12:56] Pros and cons of a Dry January[15:10] Navigating a sober weekend[18:55] Connecting with non-drinkers and dating while sober[28:41] Strategies for communicating going alcohol-free[30:57] Ordering Alcohol-free drinks with caution [35:14] Avoiding triggers and habits and creating new enjoyable memories without alcohol[38:53] The National Helpline is 800-662-HELP KEY TAKEAWAYS: Connecting with others in sober communities is critical for overcoming the shame spiral from drinking. Sharing experiences and hearing “I struggle with that, too" from your peers can help you realize you are not alone and break the isolation cycle.People often underestimate the unexpected challenges of quitting drinking, such as fatigue that persists for weeks and doubts about the payoff. These moments of struggle can lead to thoughts of giving up or attempting moderation. Patience and understanding the long-term benefits are essential to living dry beyond January. For those who choose not to drink, strategies include discreetly blending in, such as ordering non-alcoholic drinks that resemble alcoholic ones, setting clear boundaries early in dating or social scenarios and avoiding habits and triggers that increase your desire or cravings to drink.Successfully navigating cravings and triggers involves strategies beyond willpower, such as changing your environment, identifying emotional triggers, and reflecting on past behaviors to plan better responses.QUOTES: [6:42] “If you're wondering if you can, then you are somebody that can't moderate their drinking. I think it's just as simple as that. Like people that can moderate just do and live their lives.” - Gill Tietz[8:43]” Because when you think of an alcoholic, you think of a weak-willed loser who ruined their whole life because they like to drink too much, they're selfish, all of that kind of stuff. And many of us know that's not true, but that's the general public's perception. So, I was afraid of being labeled as an alcoholic and judged.” Gill Tietz[12:19] “The difference though, is that people could go the rest of their life without drinking. People can't go the rest of their life without eating.” Jenn Trepeck.[31:00] “I think more and more now, there are so many more non-alcoholic options on bar menus or in restaurant menus and certainly so many more in stores.” Jenn Trepeck[33:20] “I think it's such a valid point to recognize that we have that biochemical response, we have that craving, that reward pathway that still exists, even if we're not always feeding it. And that some of these other things can end up feeding that same pathway.” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramThe Truth About AlcoholYou Are Not Alone: Relapse RateGUEST RESOURCES: Sober Powered - PodcastSober Powered - WebsiteSober Powered - InstagramGUEST BIOGRAPHY: Gillian Tietz, MS, CAMS-I, hosts the Sober Powered Podcast and is a sobriety and anger management coach. Growing up, Julia possessed a wise intuition. After quickly realizing that alcohol wasn't for her, she cast herself as her friend group's designated driver and had a great time as the sober one of the bunch. She was always comfortable saying ‘no', and she surrounded herself with friends who would respect that and back her up. As Julia got older and the drinking around her took on a more ‘sophisticated' energy, she started to enjoy it for the first time. Slowly, it became a part of her life and she began to rely on drinking to make new friends. The tables fully turned when she met her husband, who was sober for medical reasons. He was happy to be the DD, so Julia let herself loosen her boundaries a bit. Motherhood presented Julia with a new type of drinking - mommy wine culture. Between social events and an end of the day glass of wine at home, alcohol became pretty common in her life. A ‘crummy' feeling also became common in her life, but she didn't connect the dots until she stumbled upon this podcast. The Sober Mom Life and Sober Powered made her question if alcohol was the source of the problem. Julia went back and forth between sobriety and drinking a few times before it became crystal clear - alcohol was the problem. She's now almost 6 months sober and so grateful she made the change! Episode 461 - Wait, You Drink Poison? Today we have Gill. She's 33 years old from Lexington, MA and took her last drink on November 9th, 2019. Update from Ryan H on episode 457 – “I'm going on two weeks now and I'm definitely starting to notice a difference in my mood, digestive issues and weight.” Registration for our intensive DRY January course RESTORE is now open! It's time to get your alcohol-free connect on and say adios to the booze. The most common issue I hear is that people don't have a network of others who don't drink. Well, Our Restore is going to solve that and you're going to learn a ton about alcohol, alcohol addiction, and how to beat it. Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored [03:02] Intro: Paul shares two Instagram accounts that will help you on your sobriety journey: Drop the Bottle - all about sobriety and ditching the booze. A.L.A.D.D.I.N – not about sobriety, but it is entertaining and when it's creator shares his art with the world, it gives others permission to do the same. Athletic Greens: https://www.athleticgreens.com/recovery [08:22] Paul introduces Gill: Gill is 33 and lives right outside of Boston, MA. She has a husband and a cat. She loves playing video games, going to concerts and travelling. She teaches chemistry courses and labs at a college in Boston. She is also the host of the Sober Powered podcast. Gill says she didn't start drinking until grad school. She didn't have opportunities in high school because she was bullied and didn't hang out with people that drank. She started because she feared that if she didn't then no one would like her. Once she tried it a few times and got her first buzz, she enjoyed it so much it became a regular thing for her. Gill started having repercussions from drinking early on. She didn't know her limits, had frequent opportunities to drink and would end up getting sick and having blackouts. Gill thought all of this was normal and that everyone drank like her. Gill says that her performance in school started suffering and there was multiple drink fueled fights with her boyfriend (who is now her husband). Gill ended up leaving program and decided to start teaching instead. She learned that drinking helped with the stress she experienced while teaching. Over time she switched from wine to vodka to save money. Her tolerance increased, and she started struggling with hangovers at work. Trying to moderate and make rules around her drinking was frustrating for Gill. People didn't want her to quit and when she would bring it up others would downplay it and tell her she was fine. Gill's depression was getting worse, and she started waking up with uncontrollable anxiety often. Once she began having suicidal thoughts, she got scared. Gill decided to take a break for 90 days to lower her tolerance and thought she would be cured. During that time her suicidal thoughts and anxiety lessened. She completed the 90 days and started drinking again and the consequences quickly followed. After her last rule was compromised, she realized she had to accept that she had to let alcohol go indefinitely. While it was scary at first, Gill says she also felt a sense of peace. Gill didn't think she needed meetings when she first quit but doesn't recommend people try to do it alone. After the pandemic started, Gill found she had the time to go to therapy, she started listening to podcasts, and doing a lot of research on the science around alcohol addictions. She wanted to share what she had learned with others, so she started her own podcast: Sober Powered. Gill's advice for the holidays: you don't have to go to everything if you are worried that you're going to drink or that you can't stay sober, don't go. Gill's go-to tool to get past a craving: walking, rage walking. Instagram Recovery Elevator YouTube Sobriety Tracker iTunes Recovery Elevator I love you guys. Feeling anxious and uncertain about how to stay sober during the holidays? You're not alone, especially if it's your first holiday season alcohol-free. It's completely normal to feel out of place and crave a drink during those holiday parties and family gatherings. You're probably used to toasting the New Year with a glass of champagne or sipping red wine around the Christmas fire. For a long time I knew that I should stop drinking but couldn't imagine office holiday parties, family celebrations and New Year's Eve alcohol-free. The truth is that my first holiday season wasn't easy, but it was good. After years of regretting drinking too much at big events it was lovely to remember all of New Year's Eve, wake up on Christmas morning without a hangover and replace guilt and regret with peace and pride. To help you navigate the boozy holiday season alcohol-free, I gathered a trio of experts: Gill Tietz, host of the Sober Powered podcast, Veronica Valli, author and host of the Soberful podcast, and Paul Churchill host of the Recovery Elevator podcast. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Cope With Cravings For Alcohol Can you relate to this: You've made a commitment to yourself, and maybe even your family, that you aren't drinking anymore. You remind yourself you're going to be more committed than ever, you've started some morning rituals to keep you on track, and you know this time it has to be different. Maybe you've made it a week or a month- maybe you've even made it a few months. Then one day, you are minding your own business, and out of nowhere you are hit with a craving for a drink. And it's powerful. You try to tell yourself to ignore it, distract yourself, it will go away. But it feels like it is getting stronger, and the stronger it gets the more you start to panic. All the thoughts are flying through your head a thousand miles an hour what am I going to do? How am I going to get through this? Is one drink going to kill me? Should I have one? Should I not have one? Should I call somebody? Now your brain is off like a runaway train. Cravings can be one of the most challenging pieces of living a sober lifestyle. Romanticizing the drink, the past, the nostalgia, and the comfort it once provided can all come together and create an emotional whirlwind. We have some incredibly talented people in the recovery/alcohol-free podcast world, and today's guest is one of your favorites. Gill Tietz, from the Sober Powered podcast, a fan favorite in the sobriety podcast space and an inspiration for countless people on their journey to sobriety. We got together for an episode to talk about cravings. You're going to hear our personal experiences with cravings and how we got through them- and you'll probably be pretty surprised when you hear how different it was for the two of us! We'll tell you what was challenging, the importance of feeling safe during this journey, and some of the dangers of experimenting with non-alcoholic drinks. These drinks might seem harmless, and sometimes they are! But they can also trigger memories, feelings of being left out or different, and all of that together can create cravings. And all of that can derail your progress. Episode 438 – Expectations Today we have something different lined up. Instead of one interviewee, we've got a panel of sober rockstars who have been kicking ass and taking names in this field for a while now. You're going to love it. Recovery Elevator welcomes our newest sponsor, Athletic Greens. [02:33] Highlights from Paul: We are full of expectations. Both for ourselves and other people. Top of that list is we expect happiness in a world where nothing is guaranteed. We have been conditioned throughout our life that any discomfort represents failure, and a certain product, drink or pill will end the suffering. How do we let expectations go? It's impossible. All you can do is become aware you are expecting something different for yourself or other people. Another reason why expectations are dangerous is it throws gratitude right out of the window. We also expect the earth to keep providing the natural resources needed for our survival, which are never guaranteed. We definitely need to approach sunshine, fresh drinking water, clean air, and shelter from a stance of gratitude opposed to expecting them to be delivered to us because we deserve them. More on that next week. “The days in which my gratitude exceeds my expectations are really good days” – Ray Wylie Hubbard. Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored [10:54] The interviewees introduce themselves: Laura Cathcart Robbins, the host of “The Only One in the Room” podcast and author of the book Stash: My Life in Hiding. Eric Zimmer, the hose of “The One You Feed” podcast and creator of a program called Spiritual Habits. Paul Churchill, the host of “Recovery Elevator” podcast (who we all know and love). Gill hosts the Sober Powered podcast and is also a chemistry professor in the Boston area. Gill wants to talk about early sobriety and what the experience was like for each guest. [14:33] Laura has almost 15 years in sobriety. She shares that her first month of sobriety was spent in rehab. She hated it and felt resentful of those that enjoyed it. She attended a lot of recovery meetings and felt sentenced and never felt like she fit in initially. Laura remembers the early days often and knows she doesn't want to return there. [17:18] Eric first got sober from heroin when he was 24. He stayed sober for about eight years but returned to alcohol for a few years. He has since gotten sober again and has been sober for 16 years. What Eric remembers about early recovery is that just quitting substances wasn't enough. He was plagued by the war that went on between using and not using and he feels that after some time in recovery, the turmoil subsides. [20:08] Paul had a moment of clarity during a wedding he was DJ'ing where he was extremely drunk and had to ask a colleague to finish. He quit drinking a few days later and planned on going to rehab. He decided to wait and try recovery with AA and spending more time in nature. [22:48] Gill is three and half years sober. She quit because it was affecting her mental health. She was scared to share her issues with anyone initially, so she did the first few months in recovery by herself. The guests continue to share their experiences around their early sobriety, their readiness to quit drinking and reflect on what helped them in recovery then and what continues to help them now. What is Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome from alcohol and why is it important for you to understand it if you're quitting drinking? PAWS or Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, refers to a series of symptoms that can arise after quitting alcohol and after you successfully navigate your first few weeks of sobriety. Think of it as a secondary phase of withdrawal from alcohol, which can hit a few weeks or months into recovery, or even further along. There's a lot of misinformation out there in the sober community about what exactly Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome is, when it happens, how long it takes for PAWS to go away, what are the symptoms you might experience or how do you know if you have PAWS. So today we're going to clear that all up. Gillian Tietz, the sober scientist behind the Sober Powered podcast is here to help me unravel the mystery of PAWS. Kezia and Kim are so excited to welcome Gill Tietz, from Sober Powered Media. You may know Gill from her own podcast: Sober Powered, where she takes complex ideas about our brain and bodies and explains them in her own simplified words. Gill talks with us today about how alcohol impacts us emotionally while we are in active states of addiction. At the same time, the after effects and the withdrawal alter our moods for a long time once alcohol is removed. Gill explains how drinking can make us feel relaxed at first, which is part of its addictive quality. It tricks us into thinking it is reducing our anxiety when it is in fact having the opposite effect. The ladies discuss the difference between an anxiety disorder and alcohol induced anxiety. They also talk about how to manage anxiety without alcohol in early sobriety. Further, when one removes alcohol, sometimes mental health illnesses are revealed, and treatment is often needed. Remember to talk to your doctor if you are struggling with anxiety or depression while drinking or during any part of your sobriety. If you are doing dry January, meet with a mental healthcare professional and talk to your doctor. After a 90-day break from alcohol, Gill Tietz noticed something surprising - the anxiety and depression she had spent years trying to escape through alcohol had vanished. This shocking realization inspired her to research and analyze her experience. Through this she learned that alcohol was creating lower serotonin levels in her body and changing her brain function.Alcohol was truly the source of her pain. She knew this life changing realization was going to be important to far more people than just her. Unstucking from Drinking & Navigating the Boundaries to Sobriety with Gill Tietz We are all addicts of one thing or another. For some, it can be procrastination, greed, lust, alcohol addiction, etc. Getting unstuck from such bondage may not be easy. It requires tough decisions and painful pruning of your past. The first step is awareness, and the second is acceptance. When you recognize what makes you feel stuck and how that manifest in your life, you can take steps toward changing those habits and moving forward with your goals. Join the conversation with Gill Tietz as she shares her journey, pivotal moments, and how alcohol severely impacted her mental health. She will discuss with us that she has learned about alcohol addiction, why it's so hard sometimes to stop drinking, why alcohol makes us so miserable, how to embrace sobriety, and how to develop the life skills you need to stay sober. Gillian Tietz is the creator and host of the Sober Powered podcast and works as a biochemist in the Boston area. Gill struggled with alcohol for about ten years until she quit drinking in 2019. Since then, she has dedicated herself to learning about alcohol's influence on the brain and how it can cause addiction. She used that knowledge to free herself from her shame about being unable to control her drinking. Today, she educates and empowers others to assess their relationship with alcohol. Gill became suicidal whenever she was very drunk. She would drink, pass out, jolt awake at 2 or 3 am and force herself to lie awake for the rest of the night, hating herself and thinking very scary thoughts. Gill started most days by looking at herself in the mirror and repeating “I hate you” repeatedly until she made herself cry. Eventually, the suicidal thoughts became so strong that Gill feared she might do something about it. That's when she made a point to change her life for good. It has been two years of alcohol-free, and the journey has been amazing. Listen to her story and the motivation you need. Notable Quotes “Alcohol drinking equals being suicidal.” “Acceptance of the outcomes of your habits can be your only trigger to pivot in your messy life.” “Navigating obstacles and limiting beliefs on your way forward involves a painful pruning process. You have to make hard decisions and sacrifices.” Tune in! A study published this week in The Lancet found that people under 40 shouldn't drink alcohol at all. This was a big study that looked at a lot of data, so in this episode Gill explains where the data came from, what they focused their analysis on, and the outcomes. Since this study is calling for the guidelines to be revisited, she also explains how the guidelines are even determined in the first place. You'll learn about the limits of this study, some criticisms about its conclusions, and how studies on alcohol and health are normally performed. We drink expecting all of these good things to keep coming our way, but there's a limit to the amount of alcohol that causes pleasure and good feelings. If you continue to drink after that point, you only get the bad stuff. In this episode you'll learn why this drink limit exists and what's going on in the brain to cause the discomfort, anxiety, depression and an emptiness that we experience after the alcohol wears off, and how opioid antagonists like Naloxone and Naltrexone work in the brain. Gill explains dynorphin, which is also known as the “feel bad” chemical, and how alcohol changes the dynorphin system in the brain to make us feel so miserable that we drink again to get relief. What to listen to next:E11: Why Alcohol Feels Good (Endorphins and Opioid Receptors)E62: Dopamine Deep DiveE67: How Alcohol Impacts Cortisol and Causes CravingsE106: What Happens in the Brain When We Are Overwhelmed (The Amygdala Hijack)E22: Why You Think Alcohol Helps Your AnxietyE64: Anxiety and Alcohol (Part 2)Sign up to get emails from me. Most of us have no idea what to expect when we stop drinking because usually when we quit we are so ashamed we just try to get through the beginning. In this episode Gill explains 10 things that happen when you quit drinking that no one is talking about. We hear people online say how grateful they are for hangover free mornings and sober sleep, but what about dreaming that you drink alcohol? Gill discusses overwhelm. Getting overwhelmed is one reason we turn to alcohol. Maybe you drank after some sober time and then afterwards you don't even know why you did. Or maybe you find yourself feeling out of control and needing alcohol or food to bring you back down. In this episode, you'll learn about something called the amygdala hijack which prevents our rational thinking brain from working correctly. She explains what is happening in the brain when we get overwhelmed, how this tactic is used in the courtroom, and 3 strategies you can use to prevent overwhelm and calm yourself down without reaching for alcohol. Gill also shares a quick life update, because her own experience with the amygdala hijack has prompted her to make some career changes. She will tell you about what happened and what she's doing now. What to listen to next:E98: Emotion Intensity and How to Start Self-RegulatingE94: Drinking to Cope or Numb Out Doesn't Help, Here's How to Really CopeE45: Emotional OverwhelmE55: How to Power Through When You Want to Give UpE62: Dopamine Deep DiveE102: Alcohol and Your Dysregulated Nervous System With Beth Bowen, LMSWE82: So You Quit Drinking, Now is When the Work Starts with Amanda E. A lot of us believe that we just need more willpower and then we'll be able to stay sober, and maybe you've even shamed yourself for not having enough willpower to control your drinking. In this episode she defines what willpower is, because the definition is important for us to understand what it means to have willpower or not. Gill welcomes Dr. Bhatt, MD, MRO to the podcast. We think that alcohol helps us cope with our problems, but in reality, alcohol prevents us from learning how to deal with life. Once we stop drinking, we have no idea how to handle anything. He has extensive experience in a variety of substance abuse treatment programs, psychiatric and co-occurring diagnosis programs for both adults and adolescents, and has served as the Chief Medical Officer for regional and national behavioral health companies. Dr. Bhatt's philosophy is that there is no compromising in medicine, that each patient should be treated as we would our own family. In this episode you'll learn:What resiliency is and what determines whether or not you are resilientHow your belief and confidence in yourself impacts resiliencyHow addiction break down your resilienceHow alcohol and drugs prevents us from learning to deal with lifeWhy you're emotional maturity stops when you start drinking or usingHow drugs and alcohol distort our perception of reality and leads to inaccurate conclusions about what's going on The challenges you might face in early sobriety that might make you want to drink againHow to develop resilience in sobrietyHow to deal with intense negative emotions in early sobrietyThe idea that you “should” be able to do it on your own and not wanting to get helpWhy low self-esteem exists in addiction but not in other medical conditionsConnect with Dr. Bhatt:https://www.addictioncenter.com/drbhatt/https://www.addictioncenter.com/community/bubble-of-addiction-broken-resiliency/https://www.addictioncenter.com/community/addiction-absence-presence/As a listener of Sober Powered you get special discounts from my sponsors! Gill Tietz is a biochemist and former teacher who in 2019 got sober. She has since been documenting her journey online and helping others break free from alcoholism/addiction with her popular podcast @sober.powered, often utilizing her chemistry background to break down the science (and therefore, stigma) of addiction. In this insightful episode Gill shares the details of what scared her straight and how she broke a pattern of self-destructive behavior, while learning to stop equating career success with personal worth. Gill also breaks down her slow and steady path to podcasting success (her show ranks in the top .5% worldwide) and gets real with Christa about the ups and downs of growing a show.
Gill discusses why we use alcohol to enhance our experiences. One of the main reasons people use alcohol is for enhancement. With the nice weather arriving, this is the perfect time to discuss enhancing our experience with alcohol. Nice weather is a trigger and many of us consider drinking again or that maybe we can moderate now. In this episode you'll learn why we drink for enhancement, how this is linked to problematic drinking, and what you can do if you're struggling with wanting to drink to enhance your life or if you're romanticizing alcohol. What to listen to next:E84: Does Alcohol Really Taste Good and Feel Pleasurable?E79: Why We Romanticize AlcoholE22: Why You Think Alcohol Helps Your AnxietyE64: Anxiety and Alcohol (Part 2)E76: Learning the Truth About Your Drinking with Dr. Anna Lembke, Author of Dopamine NationE100: [Special] Dr. Lembke Returns to Discuss Radical Honesty and Self-AwarenessAs a listener of Sober Powered you get special discounts from my sponsors! Gill discusses neuroplasticity. There's an invisible line that we all cross, which marks the transition from social drinking into problematic drinking. The time it takes for you to cross the line depends on your genetics, how vulnerable your brain is to alcohol-induced changes, your life circumstances, how young you begin drinking, and more. Alcohol damages and changes our brains when we drink heavily for extended periods of time. Pathways are carved into the brain as we train our brains to rely on alcohol to socialize, relax, feel happy, or deal with hard times. In this episode she explains how alcohol changes the brain, why these changes are permanent, and how this influences relapse. She has some interesting studies to tell you about that looked at animal models of relapse after months of sobriety and how alcohol and other drugs encourage our reward system to have even more plasticity. What to listen to next:E46: Neuroplasticity Helps us RecoverE97: Why We Keep Believing it'll be Different this TimeE62: Dopamine Deep DiveE91: Do You Want to be Sober or Do You Want to Drink Without the Consequences?E81: Why We Drink: Social Drinkers vs Problem DrinkersAs a listener of Sober Powered you get special discounts from my sponsors! Gill discusses emotion intensity. Just like we all don't experience alcohol the same, meaning some people will be more sensitive to the effects of pleasure and relaxation, we don't all experience emotions the same way either. Some people have very intense emotional reactions to very simple, everyday things and that just makes life a lot more challenging. When we drink, we have extreme highs and lows, but some of us are naturally prone to extreme highs and lows. Research has found that people who have very intense emotions also have more complicated lives. In this episode we're going to talk about how our emotions can vary, where emotions come from and why we have them, and 3 strategies you can use to start regulating your emotions. What to listen to next:E94: Drinking to Cope or Numb Out Doesn't Help, Here's How to Really CopeE76: Learning the Truth About Your Drinking with Dr. Anna Lembke, Author of Dopamine NationE32: A Conversation With My HusbandE35: Emotional SobrietyEmotional sobriety ebookhttps://www.soberpowered.com/first-stepAs a listener of Sober Powered you get special discounts from my sponsors! Gill discusses our ability to learn and adapt from our experiences. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, and that doesn't feel too far off from what we do with our drinking. We always seem to believe it's going to be different this time, even when it's consistently been horrible every single time before. In this episode you'll learn about cognitive flexibility, how being inflexible greatly increases the risk of developing a problem with alcohol, and one reason why addiction is progressive. She has a lot of interesting studies to go over about how alcohol affects our ability to adapt the way we think and learn new information, and at the end of the episode she explains 5 tips for becoming a more flexible person. What to listen to next:E30: Gray Area DrinkersE60: How Alcohol Affects Our Cognitive AbilitiesE61: How Alcohol Memories are Triggered in SobrietyE68: How Heavy Drinking Changes the Way We Make DecisionsAs a listener of Sober Powered you get special discounts from my sponsors!
