Emilio Doorgasingh is another member of the Little Life family playing “Andy”, Jude's Doctor at the Richmond Theatre, Harold Pinter Theatre and Savoy Theatre this year. This episodes contains spoilers! His other credits include, for screen: Casualty Ted Lasso Series 2 Game of Thrones For stage: The Kite Runner, West End and UK Tour Present Laughter Much Ado About Nothing, The Globe Best of Enemies, Young Vic and Noel Coward Theatre alongside David Harewood and Zachary Quinton A Little Life Amongst many more… Emilio discusses his two huge theatre projects he's been a part of this year, Best of Enemies (dir. Jeremy Herrin) and A Little Life (dir. Ivo Van Hove). With Best of Enemies he played multiple characters in James Graham's play that explored the political landscape of the USA during the 1960s. From journalists to Gore Vidal's (Zachary Quinto) life partner and the demands of a high fuelled energetic show with multiple costume changes and characters to jump between every night. For A Little Life he played “Andy” a doctor who has a difficult relationship with Jude (James Norton). Emilio talks about how he found the parallels of Andy's character, how on one hand he's a medical professional frustrated that his patient won't take his advice, and on the other he's a compassionate soul who doesn't want to push his already deeply traumatised friend into something he doesn't want to do. Stop hurting himself and get better. Emilio gave a stellar performance as Andy and in his many roles in Best of Enemies and it was a pleasure to talk to you sir! They chat about Nick’s amazing, if rather sad autobiography https://www.amazon.co.uk/Truths-Half-Little-White-Lies/dp/1473620880/, how his mother took on the boys who bullied Nick (and their mum), a night out with Quentin Tarantino, comeuppance for terrible aeroplane passengers, ghosts, acceptable positioning in a Human Centipede, sharing a single bed with Simon Pegg, punching walls, why Captain Pugwash the movie is unlikely to be made and making a tree famous. It’s a more serious chat than last time, with a remarkable and thoughtful guest who has been through more tragedy than you might have imagined.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Become a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITESee details of the RHLSTP TOUR DATESBuy DVDs and Books from GO FASTER STRIPE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
#247 A Spice Girl Broke My Toilet Seat - Rich has had his lactose tolerant choices mocked at the supermarket again, but he will rise above it as he comes to posh old Richmond Theatre to talk to Sam Wills aka Tape Face. They discuss the bizarre world where a child stalked a clown, how to clip through a tennis racquet, the accidental discovery of the character and who thought it up, the gamble of going on a talent show and how it might have just paid off, living and working in Las Vegas, taking props through airport security and the controversy over the cloning of Tape Face. Plus the best kind of tape to use and instructions on how to apply it to your mouth. Richard realised his Boss Cat error after this recording, but to be fair the audience were given the chance to correct him and failed him, so it’s their fault.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Become a badger and see extra content at our WEBSITESee details of the RHLSTP TOUR DATESBuy DVDs and Books from GO FASTER STRIPE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Comedian Milton Jones; musician Sam Sweeney; opera impresario Michael Volpe and curator Catherine Howell join Aasmah Mir and Kate Silverton. Milton Jones is a stand-up comedian, known by many as the king of the one-liners. A regular panellist on BBC Two's Mock the Week, he has a penchant for wild hair and colourful shirts and a gentle, self-deprecating wit. Later this year he embarks on a new tour, Milton Jones is Out There, taking a philosophical look at his life so far with what he calls his 'manifesto of nonsense'. Milton Jones is Out There 2017 tour begins in September at the Richmond Theatre. Michael Volpe is the general director and co-founder of Opera Holland Park. Brought up by a single mother on a London council estate, he attended the progressive Woolverstone Hall School in Suffolk which took inner city London boys, often from broken families, and gave them the opportunity to explore art and culture at an early age. Passionate about making opera accessible to everyone, Michael has directed a short film, From Footy to Verdi, in which he introduces his three sceptical friends and fellow Chelsea supporters to the joys of opera. Opera Holland Park's new season opens on June 1st. Six years ago Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellowhead, bought a violin in Oxford. It had all the appearance of a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S Howard. Sam discovered the violin had been made - but never finished - by a luthier and some-time music hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard who died in battle during the First World War. The violin languished unfinished for many years until it was completed in 2007 and placed in the window of an Oxford music shop where it was spotted by Sam. Sam tells the extraordinary story of his fiddle in his show Made in the Great War which tours in June. Catherine Howell is collections manager at the V & A Museum of Childhood. She curated the exhibition, Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered which traces the history and enduring appeal of board games. From the Senet board of Ancient Egypt to the mobile phone app, Words with Friends, game playing has remained a constant and important part of people's lives, a friendly way to compete and a necessary escape from reality. Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered is at the V & A Museum of Childhood until April 23rd. Producer: Paula McGinley Editor: Anne Peacock.
Percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie; comedian Milton Jones; writer and filmmaker Xiaolu Guo and novelist Arno Geiger meet Libby Purves. Evelyn Glennie is an award-winning percussionist. She played the first percussion concerto in the history of The Proms at the Albert Hall in 1992, which paved the way for orchestras around the world to feature percussion concerti. She also played a leading role role in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Profoundly deaf since childhood, she set out to use her body as a resonating chamber, 'hearing' partly through her bare feet on the floor. As part of the Celtic Connections Festival she is playing a new piece marking the 70th anniversary of the partition of India alongside fellow percussionist Trilok Gurtu. The Rhythm in Me premieres at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Xiaolu Guo is a Chinese born writer and film-maker. In her memoir, Once Upon a Time in the East, she recounts her tumultuous life from meeting her parents for the first time at six and living in grinding poverty with her illiterate grandparents in a fishing village on the East China Sea. Her story takes her from a run-down shack to film school in a rapidly changing Beijing, navigating the complexities of modern China - censorship, underground art and Western boyfriends. Once Upon a Time in the East: A story of Growing Up is published by Chatto & Windus. Arno Geiger is an Austrian novelist. In The Old King in his Exile he tells the story of his late father August's struggle with Alzheimer's disease. The book is a deeply moving account of his father's illness but also stresses how it brought the two closer together. A remote figure, August didn't talk to his family much about his past - a frugal childhood and wartime experiences as a child soldier - but as his dementia took hold his son discovered more about the man and his character. The Old King in his Exile is published by And Other Stories. Milton Jones is a stand-up comedian, known by many as the king of the one-liners. On January 18 at 5:30 p.m., Walter S. Griggs, Jr. delivered a Banner Lecture entitled “Historic Disasters of Richmond.” Richmond has had its share of man-made and natural calamities throughout its illustrious history. In 1811, fire destroyed the Richmond Theatre on Broad Street, tragically claiming seventy-two lives in one of the worst urban disasters in American history. As Union forces approached Richmond in the final months of the Civil War, Confederate troops ignited the city in flames, leaving scars still visible today. The international Spanish flu epidemic did not spare the city in the early twentieth century. The worst airplane crash in Virginia history occurred near Byrd Airport in 1961. Local author Walter S. Griggs, Jr., tells these stories and more as he traces the harrowing history of Richmond’s most famous disasters. Dr. Walter Griggs Jr. is an emeritus professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has written numerous books on a variety of historical subjects, including The Collapse of Richmond’s Church Hill Tunnel; The Hidden History of Richmond; World War II in Richmond, Virginia; and Historic Disasters of Richmond.
