Hurricane season is upon us, and most people are looking to the county and its emergency chief for guidance. But did you know there's grassroots disaster-response organizing going on? Ramon Lopez took part in a drill in his own neighborhood. Then: Developer Pat Neal's 3H Ranch is one the biggest proposed developments in Sarasota County's rural east. He wants to squeeze 6,500 homes into a what's called a "village" concept, and that forces him to ask the county for a rezone and multiple variances. This, in turn, prompted a rant by one elected official. Next: Some call them the condo nazis. We're talking about homeowners associations that not only tell people what they can and cannot do in their homes, but they also play a key role in maintaining, streets, walls, roofs, and other shared assets. Now, the governor signed a law that tries to rein in some common abuses. Ramon Lopez reports. Finally: Primary elections are coming up on Aug. 20 and a general election Nov. 5. But who is doing the heavy lifting on election day? The county's Supervisor of Elections office depends on temporary paid poll workers to make it happen. We talked to Sarasota elections chief Ron Turner, and he says that's an opportunity for high school and college students.

Ron Turner died on February 1st, at the age of 66, from a heart attack. He was plagued with bad cholesterol, similar to his mother Naomi, and even though he was very fit for his age, this congenital issue took its toll. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina who graduated from West Charlotte High School, Hamilton played quarterback from 1993 to 1996 at Howard University. While at Howard, Hamilton earned the team's scholar-athlete award in 1995 and 1996.Hamilton started his coaching career at Howard University, where he served as the team's quarterbacks coach before becoming the team's offensive coordinator. Hamilton coached in the National Football League for the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers before taking a position as quarterbacks coach for the Chicago Bears on March 5, 2007.In 2010, Hamilton was hired by the University of New Mexico Lobos after Tee Martin left for the Kentucky Wildcats and was named co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. However, after Ron Turner left Stanford for the Indianapolis Colts, Hamilton left New Mexico before the start of the season to be the wide receivers coach at Stanford. In 2011, he was promoted to offensive coordinator under new head coach David Shaw. In 2013, Hamilton was named as the new offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, after former OC Bruce Arians left to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. The move reunited Hamilton with former Stanford starting quarterback Andrew Luck, tight end Coby Fleener, and wide receiver Griff Whalen.[3] Hamilton turned down an offer to become the offensive coordinator of the Virginia Tech Hokies, citing a desire to be reunited with his former protégé Andrew Luck. On December 30, 2014 the Oakland Raiders interviewed Hamilton concerning their coaching vacancy, but opted to hire Jack Del Rio. On November 3, 2015, the Colts fired Hamilton. In January 2016, Hamilton was named as the associate head coach and quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns. In 2017, Hamilton was signed by the Wolverines to a four-year $4.25m contract. There's nothing quite so dystopian as censorship: the suppression of knowledge, or works of art, that challenge the ruling order. We look at how science fiction, fantasy and horror have been censored. But also, what does science fiction teach us about how to resist censorship? And we talk to Ron Turner, publisher of Last Gasp, about the underground comics scene and his struggles with official censorship. Show notes: https://www.ouropinionsarecorrect.com/shownotes/
Originally known as "Last Gasp Eco-Funnies," the publishing company that Ron Turner and others founded celebrates 50 years next April. He moved to San Francisco to go to SF State, hung out at the Grateful Dead house, joined anti-war groups and participated in the student strike at SF State, and worked at various research labs before his life changed pretty dramatically. Ron Turner is running late. It’s impossible to find parking in North Beach this time of night. I’m nursing a whiskey upstairs as Cafe Vesuvio, the historic San Francisco bar, best known as a famed beat generation water hole. The crowd’s already getting noisy, but the founder of the legendary Last Gasp publishing house couldn’t have chosen a more perfect location for our conversation. An unfamiliar face waves hello, hands me copy of Last Gasp’s latest catalog and sits down at the table across from me. He introduces himself as Winston, a local artist. It slowly dawns on me that the man is Winston Smith, the collage artist who helped create the house style for San Francisco hardcore band, The Dead Kennedys. Suddenly it’s a group interview. Our conversation is wide ranging and occasionally on topic, fueled by multiple rounds of libation. There’s talk of working on the Bakersfield/Fresno train line, Cary Grant’s love of LSD, sending comics to John McCain and Fidel Castro, and how Allen Ginsberg indirectly helped kickstart Robert Crumb’s career. And, of course, the ever-changing face of San Francisco.

In this episode, we had a lot of time on our hand after being marooned on another planet, so we watched the 2015 science fiction/comedy The Martian. How dangerous are plutonium fueled Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators? Does cosmic radiation doom Matt Damon life on Mars? Why does every Mars movie need an impossible sandstorm? Tim and special guest host Gabe answer these questions and more. We also hear from Chris Mariasola who breaks down the maritime/space law in the movie for us. Welcome to Okracast, the SFA podcast! Ahead on this week’s episode: author and Florida native Diane Roberts sings the praises of the Apalachicola Bay oyster. “Once you have one,” Roberts says, “you will never want another oyster. You will only want that oyster again and again.” Then SFA oral historian Sara Wood brings us to Fulks Run, Virginia to meet Ron Turner, the twelfth generation of Turners in Fulks Run. In 1949, Ron’s father opened Fulks Run Grocery in the Shenandoah Valley. Over the years, the grocery expanded to include a ham-curing house. Today Ron runs the business with his wife Peg, where they cure between 6,000 and 8,000 hams each year. Hungry yet? Visit www.southernfoodways.org for more.
