Ben and Tao sit down to overcome their differences through Dr Hakim's therapy-with-a-difference in the maritally redemptive, cooperative 3D platforming genre mangler, It Takes Two. In a very grown up discussion, they chat relationship difficulties, target audiences, comparable cooperative games and the confusion of critical acclaim, the role of minigames - charming or cheap? - and there's even some bonus audio from their hilariously incompetent gameplay together.   Spoilers from early on and with warnings, but nothing that would ruin the gameplay experience.   Content Warning: PEGI 12, argumentative and petty, with poor parenting tips. We are not counsellors. Very coarse language.   Clarifications: It Takes Two is rated PEGI 12 for moderate violence and use of bad language. Violence is non-realistic, and no blood or injuries are shown. The Stanley Parable is an interactive drama and walking simulator designed and written by developers Davey Wreden and William Pugh. The game carries themes such as choice in video games, the relationship between a game creator and player and predestination/fate. The therapy podcast referenced is Where Should We Begin with Esther Perel. Ben references (and highly recommends) Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression – and the Unexpected Solutions by Johann Hari The music for It Takes Two was composed by Gustaf Grefberg and Kristofer Eng. One track (‘The Extermination') also includes reference to "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Rimsky-Korsakov Audio extracts: Puss in Boots (2011) Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 Op. 46, III: Anitra's Dream Portal ‘Still Alive' All Shook Up - Elvis Presley Super Mario Party Battlezone 1980 Honey I Shrunk The Kids (1989) Hercule Poirot - Murder Under The Sun The Lion King - Mufasa's Death Wall-E (2008) Olympics Long Jump Final Rio 2016 A Little Less Conversation - Elvis Presley A Way Out OST by Sam Hulick and Gustaf Grefberg Fortnite title music for seasons 3-10 by composer Pinar Toprak Hitch (2005) Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/pixelvisionpod Twitter: @pixelviz Email: pixelvisionpod@gmail.com

Our two adventurers set sail through the Deadfire archipelago, hot on the heels of the keep-stomping, giant-stealing, adra-devouring God, Eothas, in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. But with Ben playing as impatient neutral and Tao as dignified evil, can they get along? They spill secrets of their raunchy (on-screen) romances, question the rising trend of maritime oriented games, and probe the merits and disadvantages of diving too deep into the ‘role playing’ in role playing games. Major spoilers from around half way, also spoilers for the original Pillars of Eternity. Content Warning: PEGI 15. Strong language. Slavery, colonialism, backstabbing, and ribald crewmates bragging in explicit detail of sexual conquests. Clarifications: This game was released in May 2018. The first one was released in March 2015. The party member is correctly identified by Tao as Pallegina. The original soundtrack is composed by Justin Bell who also scored the first game. The original sea shanties were written and performed by Nils Brown and Carrie Shaw. “Stanley’s Parable” is a reference to The Stanley Parable game. In the words of its designers: “an experimental narrative-driven first person game...an exploration of choice, freedom, storytelling and reality.” Netflix has not officially cancelled Mindhunter, but show director David Fincher has strongly implied it will be discontinued. As a film and video game composer, Sam Hulick, saw a huge need for a better way to share demo reels. Frustrated with the process, Sam coded a little hack to notify him when people opened the demo reels he sent. Eventually composer buddies of his were asking for the same hack. A couple years (and many lines of code) later, ReelCrafter was born. After a long career as an art director in the advertising agency world, Sara Pocius, now leads ReelCrafter's marketing, strategy and visual design. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/americanfilmmaker/support

This episode is a little bit different as I chat with composer Sam Hulick along with his wife, Sara Pocius. Sam is a BAFTA-nominated and NBC News award-winning composer for film, television and video games, who is best known for his work on the original Mass Effect trilogy, and the Baldur's Gate games. However, he also has a background in computer programming, and this led to him, along with Sara, who has a background in design, building the app ReelCrafter.Frustrated with the lack of a decent platform for composers and musicians to present their demo reels, Sam and Sara decided to develop their own. It has become a huge success, being used by some of Hollywood’s biggest composers including five-time Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal ('House of Cards'), Christopher Lennertz ('Lost in Space', 'Supernatural'), Trevor Morris ('Olympus Has Fallen', 'The Tudors'), and many others.ReelCrafter lets composers create personalised reels with images, video, and biography, removing the use of clunky file sharing links, or low-grade audio. It also allows the composer to see when reels are viewed (or ignored), and gives real-time listening events right in the account dashboard. In the interview, we chat with Sam and Sara about what led them to build the ReelCrafter app in the first place, and how they approached designing it. We also talk with Sam about his work with Jack Wall creating the award-winning soundtracks for the Bioware's epic space saga video game, Mass Effect. Week in Geek: Andrew addresses the Steam Sale as well as a horrible Dragonlance animated film. Dan shares his continuing Rogue Legacy woes. Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Prequel: A big gaming announcement at this week's E3 conference was that Square-Enix will be releasing Final Fantasy VII remake. Fans around the world collectively melted. What about the remake do Dan and Andrew expect and look forward to? The Cost of Gaming: From DLC to Freemium pay-walls to retail prices, the cost of gaming is a variable notion today. Andrew and Dan examine this idea from a variety of angles to try and figure out why it's so open to interpretation and exploitation. Shenmue III: Another big announcement at E3 this year was the Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue III, the long suffering Sega franchise that could have possibly sunk the Dreamcast. The announcement broke Kickstarter, broke records for funding, and revealed possibly shady backroom dealings that make this a much more complicated topic than it seems. Episode 49 of Books and Ideas is an interview with Emily Reese from Minnesota Public Radio. Reese is the host of two podcasts that I enjoy: Top Score and Learning to Listen. In this interview we focus on Top Score, which is a podcast about video game music. Reese interviews the composers and gives listeners an inside look at the challenges that face composers in this new, but growing field. You don't need to be a muscian or a gamer to enjoy Emily's podcasts. For complete show notes and free episode transcripts go to http://books and ideas.com. This episode contains a number of short music clips. All are within the 30 second limit allowed by fair use. Instead of another set of movie reviews this week I decided to make things consistent and come out with something in it's stead. I have a couple video games to review this round as well as one anime. I start things off with Mass Effect 3, hopefully it's as spoiler free as I think it is but if anyone has problems with it you can send an email. I didn't address in detail the controversy with ME3's ending(s) I just discuss my interaction with them. Following ME3 is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a good game but I think it shows it's age just a little bit. Overall it has a fun story, but it has two failings that keep this title from being amazing. And lastly I try to talk about Ikki Tousen, but honestly I have little to no idea what it's about and that's after watching 6 episodes. So if it sounded disjointed that's because I was confused and lost. I doubt anyone will be surprised by the score. Tyler Cameron, Mike Murphy, and Matt Erazo join Eddie Inzauto and Jason Fanelli for a roundtable discussion of the Mass Effect franchise. They focus on Mass Effect's impact on players, what it did right, where it went wrong, its significance for gaming, and where we want the sequel to take us, and then Eddie offers up his early thoughts on the first 22 hours of Mass Effect 2 in what turns into a full review of the improved and impressive sequel. 00:00 - Welcome. The GamerNode Show: A Board Game and Video Game Podcast

Eddie Inzauto, Jason Fanelli, and Tyler Cameron laugh through a discussion about morality in videogames, but still manage to think critically about the topic at hand. In an interesting discussion, they approach the material from a variety of angles and come out with some good insight and a better understanding of what makes such systems better or worse. 00:00 - Welcome. Introductions. Weather. 01:48 - What we've been playing. Assassin's Creed II, Uncharted 2, Left 4 Dead 2, inFAMOUS, Prototype, and a quick breakdown of Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer. 07:56 - Morality systems in games. 09:11 - What makes a videogame morality system a good one? 13:40 - Fitting polar "good" and "bad" roles. Shades of gray. Missing out on aspects of gameplay. 17:00 - Embracing neutrality. Why have a morality system at all? 19:39 - From a narrative perspective rather than a gameplay perspective. 21:07 - Morrigan's facade, and how women want to sleep with men who are mean to them. The morality of infidelity. 22:43 - Conversation DERAILED. 23:00 - Transposing one's own morality onto characters who have a limited range of responses. 25:54 - Choices bridging multiple games in a series. How Mass Effect 2 will do this. 28:37 - Back to morality. Alternate definitions of right and wrong. 33:43 - Games that would be improved by adding or removing a morality system. 37:23 - Micro-consequences vs. game-changing choices. Obvious vs. ambiguous choices. Save/load tactic vs. forced closure. 40:59 - What do you want to see implemented in future games? 45:27 - Thanks, upcoming GamerNode STUFF, and outro.
