Let us go back to high school with a review of 2019's buddy comedy Booksmart. A duo of young women realize that they have spent their entire highschool career playing it safe and focusing on good grades. That is until the haunting realization that the peers they always assumed were lesser are going on to great success. What ensues is a night of trying to finally live it up and party on for the first time. Directed by: Olivia WildeWritten by: Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, and Katie SilbermanStarring: Kaitlyn Dever, Beanie Feldstein, Skyler Gisondo, Billie Lourd, Jessica WilliamsCome on in and have a listen! What do you think of this movie? What are others like it you enjoyed? We'd love to hear from you! Please like, follow, subscribe, share.
My very special guest today is Singer & Songwriter, Emily Halpern. I regard these two things in life as highly valuable. The Gift of Laughter - I can never repay the gift of the laughter that someone shared with me. The Gift of Music I can never repay a music artist for the gift of their music, and how it makes me feel. I can never fully explain to them how life wouldn't be nearly as sweet for living without the gift of their music. Theses are gifts that I can never repay in full. I was aware of Emily Halpern's writing years before I knew who she was or had met her. Her words had made me laugh, so many countless nights watching Black-Ish, of which she was a writer and Producer from 2016 - 2017. And who could forget “Booksmart” Directed by Olivia Wilde written by Emily Halpern, Susan Vogel, Sarah Haskins and Katie Silberman? Those laughs made my cheeks sting pink. Booksmart laughs were guilty pleasure laughs for sure. I was introduced to her when I created a “Love Letter to Luqcues”. Lucques was the infamous restaurant in LA owned by Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne, and operated by General Manager Matt Duggan. It had closed during covid, for good. I was looking for love stories on the patrons of Lucques. Matt Duggan said that I should speak to Emily Halpern, a screenwriter. And when I did, Emily Halpern had one of the sweetest love stories of all. You see, Emily had her second date with her husband Evan at Lucques, tucked away in a corner table in the bar. The way Emily tells it, They both knew they had found each other's soulmate that night. They had their wedding at Lucques. And, Their first born daughter Franny just missed her very first Sunday Super at Lucques before the Pandemic shut everything down. If you'd like to listen to A Love Letter to Lucques - search:SN7 | Ep308 - Part 1 + Part II - A Love Letter to Lucques - 7 True Stories told by 7 Special Guests Flash forward to 2023. Instagram - I see a post by Emily, welcoming her first-born EP album to the world. It's titled “Carry Me Home.” She recently released a single “Hey Buddy” which we are playing here in it's entirety at the end of the show. She is currently at work on a second EP to be released next year. Lily Tomlin! Jane Fonda! Rita Moreno! Sally Field! We had to see what these 80-year-old ladies were up to in the geriatric sports comedy 80 For Brady. The story features four lifelong friends who travel to watch Tom Brady play in Super Bowl LI in 2017. The movie offers supporting roles from Tom Brady, Billy Porter, Rob Corddry, Alex Moffat, Bob Balaban, Glynn Turman, Sara Gilbert, Patton Oswalt, Rob Gronkowski, and the one and only Guy Fieri. The witty screenplay was written by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern, who were the writers of Booksmart (2019). The cinematography is by the great John Toll, who shot Braveheart, The Thin Red Line, and Cloud Atlas. Laughs were had by most of the audience for this wacky comedy. We'll tell you all the trouble that these ladies get into!
Olivia Wilde has long been working as an actress before stepping her foot into directing. She made a few short films and music videos, then locked her sights on the Blacklist script Booksmart by Emily Halpern & Sarah Haskins. She had screenwriter Katie Silberman rework the script (that Susanna Fogel had already changed ) into something that painted the vision she was looking for, and off she went. The film, while not a runaway success that it should've been, still did well for itself and set Wilde up as a new director with a strong voice. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we conclude our Coming of Age Debuts series with Wilde's 2019 film Booksmart. We're big fans of Booksmart. While we graduated from high school a few years (read decades) before this film takes place, it's impossible not to notice all the same personalities and groups. What makes these characters stand out so well? And how much do we identify with our two protagonists Molly and Amy (played brilliantly by Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever)? The adults are interesting characters in the film, but what does it say that the one with the most time spent is Miss Fine? It's fitting, considering her scenes together with our protags. And what do we learn about the complexities of people in general as we spend time with Jared, Annabelle, and Gigi? The film stands as vibrant and alive. Wilde smartly uses slow motion in a few spots. How do those moments stand out and why those spots? All in all, this may be the highlight of an absolutely brilliant series. We love it and hope you do too. Check it out then tune in! What is the difference between choice and decision when it comes to characters? In order to better understand dramatising of character, Chas and Stu take a very draft zero look at very specific tool: choices and decisions. We analyse three films through the decisions made by their characters. In particular, how the audience understanding of: the choice available, the considered decision itself, and the consequence changes how we feel about these characters. And how separating those three things can create different emotional effects on your audience. We debate this in the episode, but this is the terminology we settle on: CHOICE: Are the options presented to the character. DECISION: Is the knowing consideration of the choice and resulting action. CONSEQUENCE: is the resulting outcome from the choice. Part 1 (this part) establishes what we mean by choice and decision, and then takes a deep dive into BOOKSMART, directed by Olivia Wilde, and written by Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins and Susanna Fogel. We all discuss FLEABAG, SEVEN, and old favourite, Star Wars. Part 2 will turn our analytical eye on THE FAREWELL and WRATH OF MAN. This week on the IronWomen podcast Alyssa and Haley catch up with retired pro triathlete and Olympian Sarah Haskins. The three break down the results of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Triathlon races, and Sarah reminisces about the first mixed relay she did when it was introduced back in 2009. With over 50 career wins as a professional triathlete, Sarah is one of the most decorated short course professionals from the US. She talks about the pressures that athletes face, especially at an Olympic Games, and how we can shift our mindset to see success outside of just winning a gold medal. Sarah had a prolific career as a short course racer in the US on the LifeTime circuit and other national race series. She talks about her decision to stick closer to home to race these draft legal events, especially after having children, and how she was able to carve her own path to success outside of the traditional ITU schedule. A lot has been written about the Second Amendment to the United States constitution over the years, much of it in dispute over what the right to keep and bear arms means for individual Americans. What I'm sure we can all agree is that when this constitutional change was ratified in December of 1791, everyone attending shared a common dream that one day they would be able to see an immense Austrian man operating a belt fed machine gun like a childrens toy as he indiscriminately murders wave after wave of faceless goons. Those pioneers would be delighted to listen to this weeks podcast on the Top 5 Movie Guns if they weren't already dead, primarily of accidental gunshot wounds.A coming of age buddy tale set on the eve of graduation is a difficult setting to achieve something distinctive in but that's exactly what first time director Olivia Wilde has set out to accomplish with 2019's Booksmart. Well-worn tropes are given a modern feminine makeover by writers Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, and Katie Silberman and leads Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever shine alongside an established supporting cast including Jason Sudekis, Lisa Kudrow and Will Forte. Will the Dads be woke enough to enjoy this one?The Simpsons is one of the greatest television programmes of all time. Many would say the greatest of all time in fact. And now they have the honour of being discussed by the Bad Dads. Sidey picked season 3 classic "Homer at the bat" for us to revisit and it's not long before the quotes and trivia are flowing on this icon of popular culture. If you can't get enough of our incredibly mediocre entertainment you can yell at us on twitter - @dads_film - or visit our website baddadsfilm.com.Until next time, we remain...Bad Dads

Writer’s block had set in when two female comedy writers in LA put down their pens and declared they’d run out of material. But then a light bulb lit up and an idea was hatched – Sarah Haskins would marry her next-door neighbor, a man 20 years her senior with ex wives and a lot of children. It was just too good to pass up. They got back to work and at that moment “A Trophy Wife” came into existence. Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern are writers and producers on CBS’s Carol’s Second Act starring Patricia Heaton. They also co-created ABC sitcom Trophy Wife based on Sarah’s marriage to her older husband. Their first project together, the funny, edgy coming of age movie, Booksmart, was written in 2009, about two overachieving girls who realize that the only thing they haven’t accomplished is getting boyfriends. It has a lot of twists and turns just like their journey it took to get the film made in the first place. For 10 years the script was shopped around, and turned down, and reworked, and then shopped around again until finally Olivia Wilde agreed to direct it in 2019, Booksmart opened to critical acclaim. I met up with Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern during a break from writing Carol’s Second Act, to hear about their incredible story of how tenacity, vision and a great producing partner can turn big dreams into reality.

Olympian Sarah Haskins joins California Triathlon Soup to discuss her 14 year triathlon career including participating in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Sarah explains how she nimbly juggles being a professional triathlete, wife of Nate Kortuem (triathlon coach) and mother of Caroline & Connor. We do a deep dive on her road to being selected to a 2008 U.S. Olympic Team that included Laura Bennett and Julie Ertel. Finally, we hear about her secret to success building long term relationships with sponsors including Performance Bike, Fuji & Rudy Project. California Triathlon Soup podcast is 2 parts triathlon, 1 part culture and a dash of silly. Season 1 offers a fresh serving of “Soup” every two weeks over a 12 week period. The guests are top notch as a counterweight to the host’s shear lack of talent and even Erik Schiller’s mad post-production skills might not be enough to make this palatable. Still, we hope you line up like Oliver Twist and find the podcast hearty and not thin gruel. 23 OUNCE CALIFORNIA TRIATHLON SOUP MUG.
