Most families could do a lot more with a lot less with a bit of financial know-how and discipline, and that's why Brad is passionate about personal finance. A big goal of parents is sending their kids to college. College kids basically can't work their way through anymore. Parents can start saving generally and later earmark that savings for college. Lauren asks about having to choose between saving for college and your own retirement. On the bright side, as evidenced by packed college campuses, most people figure it out. Brad shares a concrete example about a father who planned for 4 kids to go to college successfully. The two also discuss lifestyle inflation and the importance of auditing your income and expenses. Then, they transition to a discussion around estate planning. Brad shares a sad story about a mistake that cost a family $100,000. Brad encourages us all to have conversations with our spouse about college planning for the kids sooner than later. Problems can arise when parents don't agree. Also, be careful what you commit to for college in front of your kids. Saying “we'll figure it out” was easier 15-20 years ago. You could be committing to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Brad ends by reminding us to get started now. If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 175 about student loans and 33 about estate planning. David talks about the Power of Zero “philosophy,” as well as a recent Penn Wharton study saying that, if all we do is continue on this same course, by 2043 there will be no arrest in the financial collapse of our country. 95% of Americans have the lion's share of their retirement savings sitting in what we call tax-deferred vehicles like 401(k)s and IRAs. A big problem most Americans face: every year the IRS gets a vote on what percentage of your profits they get to keep. David shares the Power of Zero origin story and he explains what someone should do to get as close as possible to someone else. David addresses the question “Where should we be investing our retirement dollars? $29,200 is the limit under which you'll get to experience the water. “A lot of people don't realize that their social security number can be taxed,” says David. When people find out that I am a financial advisor, they usually ask me about retirement. Specifically, they want to know the best ways to save in order to secure their financial future. So in this episode, I'm giving you my three favorite ways to save for retirement and the pros and cons of each strategy.  You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... The pros and cons of a 401k [1:33] The pros and cons of a Roth IRA [8:03] The pros and cons of a Health Savings Account [11:32] Getting the full 401k picture One of the biggest pieces of the retirement puzzle is saving. You have to be able to save enough money during your career to sustain you through retirement when you stop working. How you go about it is up to you, but the first place I would start is a traditional 401k. The biggest pro to a 401k is that many employers will match your contributions at 3% or more. You also have the added benefit of payroll deduction, so it's easy to “set and forget” your way to retirement success. However, it's not all sunshine with 401ks. There are some cons you should be aware of. The first is the standard annual contribution limit of $22,500. Also, you are subject to a withdrawal fee if you try to take out money before you turn 59 and a half. Some 401ks can have high fees, and you could be limited on your investment options depending on who your employer goes through. Finally, 401ks have Required Minimum Distributions, which force you to take out a certain amount of money after the age of 73. Additional retirement saving strategies My second favorite retirement saving method is using a Roth IRA. This is a great way to invest after-tax money where it can grow tax-deferred. You can also withdraw the money tax-free because it was already taxed when it went in. Depending on the company you work for, Roth IRAs tend to have a large selection of investment options, and there are no Required Minimum Distributions like with a 401k.  Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are my third and final retirement savings strategy, and it's one regular listeners of the podcast should be familiar with. I talk a lot about HSAs because they are the only triple tax-free account out there. You receive a deduction when you put the money in, the money grows tax-deferred. When you take the money out for health-related costs, it's also tax-free! It's a win all the way around. Listen to this episode for more retirement saving strategy pros and cons! To submit a question for an upcoming episode, visit here: https://www.moneytalkwitht.com/asktiffany Key Takeaways When calculating how much to save for retirement, consider the age you plan to retire and ensure the money lasts until the end of life expectancy. Determine what your desired lifestyle in retirement will be and calculate how much income you need each year to maintain this lifestyle. Think about your expected sources of retirement income, such as pensions, annuities, social security benefits, etc. Consider how much risk you can tolerate with your investments depending on how close you are to retirement age. Ask yourself if you want to keep working part-time after retiring and if tax deferral strategies such as 401ks or Roth IRAs should be used for retirement planning. Factor in any other expenses, such as healthcare and long-term care costs.

There was a time in my life when from an outsider's perspective, I had it all. I had an awesome job traveling around the country, I had a circle of hugely successful friends, and I did not seem to have a care in the world. The reality is that, like many overachievers, I was drowning. I felt I was not good enough. My energy was zapped daily with the stress of life, career, and relationships. The truth is that I was disconnected from my real values and beliefs and doing everything I could not to be aware of the dissatisfaction and pain I was feeling inside. Today's guest is the master of engineering the life you desire. After living on three different continents and experiencing distinct cultures, Michael Bauman has learned the key to transitions. In this episode, Michael and I discuss how we can engineer the life we want and are meant to live. Here are three takeaways from our conversation: First, we speak about starting with WHY (we learned this from Simon Sinek).  May of us have outer success but don't feel like we are successful in all areas of life. Starting with why helps you identify what drives you and define success for yourself. Two, research says we have saboteurs that keep us in negative emotions instead. of the positive emotions that can help us reach happiness. People who achieve happiness also have been found to have a higher level of happiness. Three, radical acceptance is a great way to deal with emotion. The acronym RAIN is an easy-to-remember tool for practicing mindfulness and compassion using the following four steps:Recognize what is happening;Allow the experience to be there, just as it is;Investigate with interest and care;Nurture with self-compassion.You can take your time and explore RAIN as a stand-alone meditation or move through the steps whenever challenging feelings arise. Here is a bit more about Michael:  A moment that changed his life, receiving the news of his first child, led him to decide to move to China with his wife. His decision has led him to grow professionally without knowing the language or the culture. Michael was born and raised on the balmy tropical island of Papua New Guinea and has traveled worldwide, witnessing and participating in numerous cultures, perspectives, and fundamental values and belief systems. Currently, he lives with his family in the beautiful city of Hangzhou, Chinad. Michael is launching a phenomenal mastermind.
