Hey Girls and Boys, Lads and Lasses, the biggest superhero team on any Earth, The Legion of Super-Heroes, tangles with the villainous Time Trapper as he turns their former ally Superboy against them. It's an ambitious story in the post-Crisis world that serves as a template for DC storytelling to this day. We discuss this all with Legion super-fan and "DC Book of Lists" author Randall Lotowycz!Ep. 94 What If the Time Trapper created a pocket universe to turn Superboy against the Legion of Super-Heroes?With Special Guest author and editor Randall LotowyczEarth of an unknown designation as seen in the Superman & Legion of Super-Heroes crossoverThe Legion of Super-Heroes can seem intimidating with their 20+ members from the traditional members like Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, and Mon-El to the wacky powered beings like Matter Eating Lad, Shrinking Violet, and Bouncing Boy, which is why we break down this team from the 60s through their major turning point post crisis in the 1980s. We travel through a multi issue arc constructed by major architects Paul Levitz and John Byrne that sees the Legion and Superman battle their old friend Superboy in a pocket universe, all controlled by the mysterious cloaked Time Trapper. We also discuss Time Trapper co-creator and Weird Tales writer Edmund Hamilton and how we are still seeing the reverberations of this story in DC's current multiverse and alternate Earth storytelling on film and TV - including the upcoming Flash film from 2023 and more! Finally, we speculate what's next for the Time Trapper and whether Marvel's Kang stole his onscreen...time. it’s been a few months since i broke up with my therapist and i’ve been doing pretty well. really well, actually. there are some things that it would be nice if they were going a little differently but none of them are high anxiety situations. everything has been manageable. i’ve been able to check in with people when i have something to think through. i don’t feel like i’m holding too much in - just enough. i’m not feeling too stressed. my days are full and i’m having a nice time.i’m not sure how to account for it all. like, i want an explination. why. but maybe that’s all it is. i ride this moment and if things change i adjust. and that will be fine.i wore white pants all day yesterday. i can do anything.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 House Deposit “Cruise Control” Reward For Effort03:15 LAPS “Not Often” Soon Not Often In It05:53 little champion “i saw yr boat” Curiosity08:50 Crissy Bell “A Little Love” Weakness13:25 Alpha Error “Soft Boycott” i16:29 ALIEN NOSEJOB “Cabanossi” HC45 7"18:09 Noxeema “Red Line” NOXEEMA19:30 Eggy “Bar Fred” Billy22:02 Sipper “N.J.F.D.” Adam Driver EP24:11 Buni Hate Mail “Soup” Chain Mail27:37 Lande Hekt “Gigantic Disappointment” Gigantic Disappointment30:39 PYNKIE “Shrinking Violet” neoteny33:00 Lovelet “Tusks” couple’s fight night36:05 Sunglaciers “Through the Screen” Foreign Bodies38:06 Warsh “Brat” Burning Urge EP39:38 Ennui Trust “Pay It Forward” Ennui Trust42:29 Caroline Says “Smoke and Mirrors” Ohio River EP45:04 Sylvia Wrath “Softy” Saint Catherine48:25 Your Heart Breaks “Wesley Crusher (feat. February 1964 w: Edmond Hamilton a: John Forte While the Legion of Super-Heroes attempts to figure out what the Time Trapper is up too, they find opposition in the way of a barrier protecting the future era in which he resides, keeping the Legion from monitoring his activities. In the meantime, the Legion induct a new member, Dream Girl, who is voted in because all of the male members of the Legion become instantly attracted to her and vote her into the Legion. Things start to get suspicious, as Dream Girl ends up entrapping various Legion members on disciplinary actions, leading to their temporary suspension from the Legion. After taking Ultra-Boy, Bouncing Boy, Shrinking Violet, Lightning Lad, and Lightning Lass to an alien world which causes them to de-age into infants (except for Dream Girl who took a preventative antidote) most of the Legion is on suspension. However, Dream Girl later reveals to Star Boy, that her power is to see the future through dreams, and the reason she has manipulated events is because she forsaw the Legion being killed in a rocket explosion, and that she did everything she could to prevent the Legion members from dieing. Star Boy then reveals to Dream Girl that what she saw was really a planned rocket flight with robot doubles of the Legion. Afterwards, all is explained and Dream Girl decides to leave the Legion to hone her powers, but not before seeing the other Legion members -- restored to their natural ages -- and learning that the episode gave Lightning Lass new powers over density, Dream Girl rechristens her Light Lass. - via DC Wikia LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: THE SILVER AGE OMNIBUS Originally introduced in 1958, the Legion of Super-Heroes is a team of super-powered teenagers from the disparate worlds of the 30th century's United Planets. In honor of Turtle Wax launching their new campaign- “Protect The Body. Free The Soul.”- we’ve curated this podcast to serve as the perfect driving companion, guaranteed to enhance even the most mundane of driving occasions. Comencemos (Let’s Start) – Jungle Fire Latin funk that integrates horns, a driving bass-line and a constant ambush of bongos. Comencemos! The Skies Above – The Equals Eddy “Electric Avenue” Grant was the leader of this group, and this is one of his more arresting, freaked out songs. B-Side of the 1968 single, “I Get So Excited.” Ghetto Love – Spinnerette Spinnerette is headed by Brody Dalle, a pillar of punk rock in the 90’s who then slipped into synth-pop for a while. This track came from the sole record the group produced. Gasoline Alley – Dave Grusin Heard in the 1969 racing movie “Winning”, this song was one of the groovy staples on the soundtrack. Nothin’ in the World Can Stop Me Worryin’ Bout That Girl – The Kinks One of the more undiscovered Kinks classics, the song didn’t get played a lot when it came out, but resurged when Wes Anderson used it for the pool scene in “Rushmore”. All Night Long – The Mavericks This is the first song off the Mavericks new 2015 album “Mono”, and is a sexy salsa tune that has influences of Latin pop, rock and the unique sound that this band brings. Down In Mexico – The Coasters As this unmistakable 1957 tune proves, nobody ever combined doo-wop, R&B and a sense of humor quite like The Coasters did. Shrinking Violet – Kinny Off the 2009 album, “Can’t Kill A Dame With Soul”, a soulful, dirty groove anthem. Viol – Gesaffelstein After listening to over three-hundred tracks, we finally selected this driving beat from French DJ, Gesaffelstein as the theme for the new Turtle Wax campaign. Free your soul, baby! Wolverton Mountain – Claude King Coming from the collaborative efforts of King and Merle Kilgore, this 1962 hit is pure country corn. Potential suitors of Clifton Clowers’ daughter, beware!
This time around we chat about WHO'S WHO: Volume XXI, discussing characters such as Shrinking Violet, Sinestro, Slipknot, Solomon Grundy, Space Cabbie, Slipknot, The Spawn of Frankenstein, Spectre, Speedy, Slipknot, and more! We wrap up the show with Listener Feedback!
The Subs take a look at the Plunder Ploy of the Fatal Five, as the villains take out Duplicate Boy, and then set their sights on the Legion, while Colossal Boy sets his sights on Shrinking Violet!
After a full month of celebrating KISS, we're back to celebrating all things that rock. KISSMAS in JULY was a huge success and we're ready to now turn you on to some stuff you aren't getting on the radio. For the new listeners, the Radio Sucks Radio Show's premise is simple. We expose you to some great quality music (old and new) that rock radio is just not giving you. We do this as a service to you, the listener, to encourage you to go out and purchase this great music and support the artist. Check the Amazon links for each artist played at the bottom of these show notes to hook yourself up with great tunes! We start off volume 13 of this series with a palate cleanser for the non-KISS fans in our audience that endured a full month of us extolling the virtues of how much KISS rocks. Teenage Bottlerocket, from Wyoming, released an album in 2009 that featured a tongue-in-cheek punk ditty pronouncing the band as being 'Bigger Than KISS' with lots of jabs thrown at the band. We want to play this for the non-KISS fans and those of you that have a sense of humor. We love KISS, you know that. We think it's good to laugh at things you love once in a while. Supagroup Supagroup, from New Orleans, started up in 1996. In this episode, we take a listen to a rock track that's sure to get you in trouble if you take it too seriously. Have a seat over there... One of the benefits of rock/metal podcasts are the fact that you can get turned on to music that you certainly can't find on the airwaves. Such is the case with The Wildhearts. Fronted by the enigmatic Ginger, the band has gone through numerous lineup changes but due to Ginger's amazing songwriting, has continued to put out some of the catchiest rock songs you've never hears. We listen to a track from their self-titled debut that's easy to love. Dick Wagner One of our favorite interviews was with former Alice Cooper guitarist Dick Wagner. Dick has an amazing musical history with his connections to Alice, KISS, and Aerosmith among others. His solo output is also very good. We take a listen to Dick's take on a rock and roll classic that inspired him. This track comes from his autobiography 'Not Only Women Bleed' which is available HERE. Highly recommended! We return from the first break to listen to a track from a modern-day power trio. Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy, and Billy Sheehan combine their chops to form The Winery Dogs. Their new release has already become one of the biggest rock albums of 2013; charting high despite limited airplay. We try to do our part in supporting this awesome release with a track that will leave you wanting more. Another recently-released album that's getting critical praise yet not nearly enough attention on radio is ...Like Clockwork, the latest offering from Queens of the Stone Age. Picked up on Aaron Camaro's recent excursion to Los Angeles, the album has been in constant rotation on his playlist. We take a listen to to a sampling of this new album. 2013 has proven to be a good year for rock and metal as Chris' next pick proves. With one of the more surprising releases of the year, King Kobra returns with a sophomore effort for their new lineup featuring Paul Shortino on vocals. King Kobra II has a full slate of solid material and we take a listen to the lead-off track that will run right over you. Heading into the next break, we hear from longtime Chicago doom metal legends Trouble with a track from their new release 'The Distortion Field.' Hailed by some as one of their stronger albums, we take a listen to a great track that will have you headbanging in no time. For those familiar with the Decibel Geek podcast, it's no mystery that Chris has become a Thin Lizzy fan over the show's history. This is due to many listeners pushing him to check out their catalog. Now rebranded, The Black Star Riders, have released a new album with 'All Hell Breaks Loose,' an album full of dual-guitar leads and swagger; hallmarks of the Thin Lizzy sound. While Phil Lynott can never be fully replaced, it's hard to argue with Ricky Warwick's channeling of the gone-too-soon frontman/bassist on this new track. Closing out the show is a band that's long been a go-to pick for our Radio Sucks Radio Shows. LA Guns, with their ever-changing lineup, have released a massive amount of good tunes over the years. We couldn't think of a better way to close out this new installment than with this edgy track from the Shrinking Violet sessions. Buy Music!
