Today, I am excited to share the first class in a series of lipid masterclasses with the amazing Dr. Thomas Dayspring! Dr. Dayspring is certified in internal medicine and clinical epidemiology and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the National Lipid Association. He was previously the Educational Director of a nonprofit organization and has served as the Chief Academic Advisor for two major cardiovascular labs.  Due to the in-depth nature of my discussions with Dr. Dayspring over several sessions, each lasting nearly six hours, it seemed logical to present these masterclasses in segmented chunks to make them easier to understand. In our first class today, we dive into the fundamentals, exploring what lipids are and how lipids and fatty acids are classified. We cover the physiology and transportation of cholesterol and the role of apoptosis, apo-proteins, and apo-lipoproteins, unravel the differences between HDL, LDL, IDL, and VLDL, and explain how to calculate LDLs and triglycerides for assessing metabolic health. Dr. Dayspring also shares his preferences regarding lab values and the indicators that provide information to help him determine the early risk of cardiovascular disease. We get into some detailed aspects of physical chemistry in this episode, so I highlight the main clinical points throughout our conversation to make it more understandable. Be sure to join Dr. Dayspring and me for our next episode in the lipid masterclass series. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: What are lipids, and why are they important? Dr. Dayspring explains what triglycerides are. How lipids get absorbed and transported throughout the body What lipoproteins are, and how they get classified How cholesterols get calculated The impact of triglycerides on cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health How high triglyceride levels can indicate early insulin resistance or increased ASCVD risk What is the role of HDL particles? How metabolic syndrome impacts cardiovascular health Bio: Thomas Dayspring MD is a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the National Lipid Association and is certified in internal medicine and clinical lipidology. After practicing in New Jersey for 37 years, in 2012, he moved to Virginia. He served as an educational director for a nonprofit cardiovascular foundation and until mid-2019 as a Chief Academic Advisor for two major CV laboratories. Since then, he has served as a virtual cardiovascular / lipidology educator. Career-wise he has given over 4000 domestic (in all 50 states) and several international lectures, including over 600 CME programs on atherothrombosis, lipids/lipoproteins (and their treatment), vascular biology, biomarker testing, and women's cardiovascular issues. He has authored several manuscripts and lipid textbook chapters and performed several podcasts. For several years he was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. He was the recipient of the 2011 National Lipid Association's Presidents Award for services to clinical lipidology and the 2023 Foundation of NLA Clinician/Educator Award. 19 April 2023: In this episode of the Dark Matter Podcast, Stephanie Tumampos speaks about her role as a scientist and a teacher, reflecting upon how she cultivated an appreciation for science from early childhood, and how space science such as geodata gathered from satellite technology can contribute to our abilities to monitor the world, improve our understanding of climate change and predict human-impacted behaviours on a global scale. Furthermore, the podcast seeks to understand how this data collection may eventually produce a ‘Digital Earth', and how a digital copy of our world can be used as a model of our natural world, helping us anticipate irreversible climatic incursions. But overall, with an attitude of curiosity, the podcast questions the ethics of such a scientific mindset and whether a Digital Earth represents the endgame, or just one of many possible stories on the importance of geodata. Tumampos is a Filipino doctoral student at the Technical University of Munich, who currently serves as the Chief of Publicity and Press Relations and Social Media Ambassador for the Inspire Develop Empower Advance (IDEA) Program committee at IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE GRSS). She also hosts the IEEE GRSS Down to Earth: A Podcast for Geoscientists by Geoscientists, where she talks with experts in the field of innovative geoscience and remote sensing about their science, careers and passions. With a background in applied physics, environmental engineering and geoinformatics, she is passionate about making science accessible to everyone, regardless of their gender, race or background.

Being Pro-Israeli is hard enough, doing it on social media is a whole other story. It's more than an uphill battle, it's more than bearing the brunt of the mainstream global media. In a way, you might say it’s more like a social media suicide mission. However, a few brave profiles manage to rise up, through the rubble, as pro-israel, pro-zionist, social media vanguards. One of these people is Hannyia Naftali. Hananiya was a regular soldier in the IDF who just couldn’t stand the onslaught of fake news about Israel and the IDF that circulated around the world. So he decided to do something about it. Fast forward 4 years - his videos have got MILLIONS of views, he has a huge following on facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and he even had the privilege of interviewing the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. We are super thrilled to be joined by Hananiya Naftali. Of course, if you’re watching this live, feel free to ask questions in the comments and we’ll do a bit of Q&A as we go. So without further ado, let’s get started.

Meet Greg Van Borssum and Joe Williams. They don't just talk about suicide prevention, they live it. Every day. In March of 2016, I had the opportunity to serve as a Social Media Ambassador for the National Council on Behavioral Health at their annual conference. NatCon16 brought together almost 5,000 mental and behavioral health specialists for dozens of talks, presentations, poster displays and, most importantly, the chance to connect. As a Social Media Ambassador, my job was to capture my unique perspective on the event and share it via social media. As I wandered through the exhibition halls I met dozens of software companies, pharma representatives, educational training firms and workplace wellness programs. Turning down an aisle I heard voices with "not from around here" accents belonging to Australians Greg Van Borssum and Joe Williams. When you meet Greg and Joe it's easy to make a false assumption. What you see are strong, chipper, intelligent men who were successful professional athletes. What you don't see is their struggle with mental illness and suicidal thoughts.  Being at #NatCon16 gave them the opportunity to take their suicide prevention through inspiration message to a larger audience. This podcast episode took place in the Exhibition Hall of NatCon16, a very lively space with lots of great conversations happening all around us. Our interview competes with a bit of background noise but both Greg and Joe were very eloquent in their thoughts so I'm sure you would mind a bit of hubbub.
