Detective Comics #682 (1995)Batman’s equilibrium is off and ends up crashing into a movie billboard about a joke-telling crocodile. We also have Communist Moondragon and KGBeast teaming up to shakedown Lucius Fox over a piece of the Wayne Enterprises pie. I continue to explore the Batman Family corner of the DC Universe with veteran writer / artist Dan Jurgens. Among Dan's vast body of work is the 1992 classic Death of Superman, his run on Thor, Captain America and The Sensational Spider-Man. Dan is also the creator of the classic characters Doomsday and Booster Gold. I check in with Dan to see how he is faring during the coronavirus pandemic and how he managed to safely connect with local fans at a Minnesota comic shop during a recent signing event. Dan is working with former collaborator Sean Chen, one of the current artists on Batman Beyond. I asked Sean in advance to comment on working with Dan and shared his feedback. Both creators have in common working for Valiant Comics during the 1990s. Dan reflects on a few highlights while writing Solar Man of the Atom. Dan explains why every comic he writes still contains enough exposition to make the issue accessible to new readers. We talk about comic book anniversaries and how they have lost some of their luster with the increasing frequency of these milestone issues. Dan explains what is key for him to make an issue worthy of containing extra pages that demand a higher price tag. Dick Grayson returns as the titular hero in Nightwing this fall with issue #75. Dick lost his memory from a gunshot to the head by KGBeast back in Batman #55 and his struggle continued beginning with Nightwing #50. Dan took over the reigns writing Nightwing with issue #59. He explains his approach to keeping the series a Nightwing comic book until the return of Dick Grayson as Nightwing. Both Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond and Dick Grayson in Nightwing suffered from memory loss. Is there a connection between the two? I ask Dan's his thoughts on Superman not being consider for another solo film, Henry Cavill in the title role and the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice Zak Snyder Cut. The final chapter of the Death of Superman was illustrated entirely with single panel pages. What ever happened to the original art from Superman #75? When I Kick Back With the Creator, I ask Dan about his favorite birthday which digresses into a discussion of 8-track tapes. For his island book Dan picks an ideal comic omnibus. All this and more is in this installment of Creator Talks. Creator Talks Theme Song: "Jazz Relax" by LoopsLab Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts More about Dan Jurgens

Check out our TeePublic store! Background (4:13) Dick Grayson created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in Detective Comics #38 (April 1940) Dick Grayson is a trapeze artist whose parents were killed by gangsters - Batman helps him seek revenge against the crime boss responsible, and he trains under Batman to become Robin the Boy Wonder Later leads the Teen Titans, a group of sidekicks Post-Crisis, he chafes under the sidekick role, and renames himself Nightwing, starting to operate as a solo hero in Bludhaven, neighboring city to Gotham First operates as Batman after Bruce leaves Gotham after the Knightfall storyline - begins to appreciate what Bruce goes through on a regular basis Reunites with the Titans, although after two teammates die, he disbands the team once again After Battle for the Cowl, he works as Batman, with Damian Wayne as the new Robin New 52 - still Nightwing, just a few years younger than before His identity is revealed to the world by the Crime Syndicate - they believe him dead after attaching him to a machine connected to his heart rate - Lex Luthor stops his heart to free him from the machine before reviving him with a shot of adrenaline Working undercover, he infiltrates the criminal Spyral organization - this storyline is told in the Grayson book by Tim Seeley & Tom King Briefly returns as Robin to help other members of the Bat-Family while Bruce is amnesiac Rebirth - Spyral wiped his identity clean, so he resumes operating as Nightwing, and starts a new Titans team Shot by KGBeast and nearly dies - gives him memory loss, and he stops fighting crime for a spell until he’s attacked by the Court of Owls (specifically his grandfather, who is a Talon), and the fight triggers his memory Issues (10:15) Transition from angry teen in the New Teen Titans to a more carefree, relaxed adult in modern comics - is this natural development or just a character retcon? What's the Flashpoint connection? CURRENT EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS & POP CULTURE REFERENCES Article: http://comicbook.com/2016/10/05/arrow-easter-eggs-and-dc-comics-references-in-legacy (comicbook.com) Captain Pike - Is that a Star Trek reference? We really can't decide. Either way, per his nametag, that police captain talking to Thea in the opening scene appears to be "Captain Pike," the captain of the USS Enterprise immediately prior to James T. Kirk. Lonnie Machin - A recurring villain from season four of Arrow, Lonnie Machin (the first baddie Oliver fights in season five) is better known to DC Comics fans as the antihero Anarky. Wild Dog - the first new member of Team Arrow version 2.0 was introduced to the audience, in the form of Wild Dog, a hockey mask-wearing, gun-toting vigilante who was inspired by -- and then shot in the kneecap by -- Green Arrow. The character first appeared in Wild Dog #1 in 1987, making him one of the first new superheroes created following Crisis on Infinite Earths. Created by Road to Perdition writer Max Allan Collins, "his super power is guns." Konstantin Kovar - Konstantin Kovar is the father of Leonid Kovar, better known as Red Star. In the comics, Konstantin originally wasn't a villain, but a relatively benign figure: an archaeologist who unearthed a nasty bit of business that gave his son powers. But Red Star himself, a loyal communist in the Soviet era, was occasionally a problem for the other heroes before he turned his life around. Eventually, he would become a bad guy in service of the Soviet Union -- something that might make him an interesting figure going forward in case Anatoly Knyazev's comic book destiny of becoming the cybernetically-enhanced "KGBeast" is to become part of Arrow's story. Tobias Church - Church's nickname is apparently Charon, the ferryman of Hades from Greek mythology. There is a Charon in DC Comics, although he shares basically nothing in common with this version. This is something that will be repeated again in the episode: choosing a historical/mythological meaning instead of a contemporary/comics one. Vigilante - "Mr. Ski Goggles," as Felicity calls him, is actually Vigilante, a DC Comics antihero created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. Perez provided the police sketch seen on Felicity's computer screen. Created during Marv Wolfman's time on the New Teen Titans, Vigilante in the comics is a former New York district attorney who's set on the path of justice after hsi family is killed by the mob. The CW describes him similarly: Chase is "Star City's new district attorney and an ally of Mayor Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), who aims to clean up the streets through the legal system." Hub City and Bludhaven - According to Detective Malone, before he made his way to Star City, apparently he haunted Hub City -- the home of The Question -- and Bludhaven, the home of Nightwing. Ross Paints - Is that a little bit of free advertising for comic book artist and painter Alex Ross on the side of the truck Tobias Church and his goons are driving to their crime spree? Bertinelli - Whoever the head of the Bertinelli crime family is now that Helena has killed her father, he makes an appearance here -- only to be immediately killed by Tobias Church's men. When asked about Prometheus, Stephen said, “ Prometheus is a villain that is a byproduct of Oliver Queen being Green Arrow. That's something that you get to do once you're five years into a show. In a lot of ways, I think the most success that we've had with a villain, in my mind, was with Manu Bennett as Deathstroke. One of the reasons is because we got to tell a really personal story. We got to tell the story, sort of the dueling time of their time on the island and then their time in the Starling City at the time. Because Prometheus is a villain of Oliver's creation, so to speak, I feel like it will bring in that personal element as well.” Link:http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/10/05/arrow-stephen-amell-talks-legacy-russia-and-why-prometheus-is-the-right-villain-for-season-5 Spartan's new helmet and a Diggle/Oliver-centric episode of Arrow is coming (Date: 02 Oct 2016) Bleeding Cool - Picture of Diggle in his new helmet. Box Office Pulp | Film Analysis, Movie Retrospectives, Commentary Tracks, Comedy, and More
Tell Box Office Pulp... Do you listen to podcasts? YOU SHOULD. Specifically this one, in which the Crew... does not talk about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Well, they sorta do. But instead of the 800th conversation you've probably heard in regards to this movie, how about we talk about the vast comic book history that inspired it? A challenge to one member of the BOP Crew that was met in stride! The origins of Kryptonite? Bruce Wayne's drinking problem? The strange secret of Smush, The Multi-Manned Bat-Villain? What about the sheer unoriginality of KGBeast's imagination? All factoids and references are uncovered in this epic part 1 of 2! Man, comic books are weird... It's that time--that's right, time to discuss the finer points of Fortnite Figures. McFarlane or Jazwares, take your pick. And what's up with gun accessories these days, huh? Ryan's World and other youtube trash toy tie-ins discussed also. You'll heal plenty of whisky-jangling sound effects from Blake as he discovers an Old Millenial from the 1930s character he never knew he had in him. Adam collectors his favorite Saturday Morning Cartoons ... in Mezco 1:12 Collective form! Blake does a loooong and upsetting superhero costumes rant. Blake also gives Adam and the listener some much needed lessons in toy photography and the art of posing. PLUS: Shelf Life reviews the entire Killer Croc wave AKA Mattel's farewall wave for DC Multiverse. This one gonna go out with a bang, folks, thanks to America's favorite Butler and his friends. CORRECTION: I am SO sorry I said "Tim Grayson" at one point. ANOTHER CORRECTION: We talk about the discovery that KGBeast appeared to be made from BAF parts, but failed to realize he's almost certainly a repurposed Lobo. Blake doesn't remember the movie Batman Forever in the least. Music by More of That. Stream us. Brought to you by the AUX podcast network.
