When a brother and sister team take on the Springtime Surprise 10-Miler, they don't just participate – they make runDisney history by becoming the first siblings to win both the male and female divisions in the same race. Meet Liz and Stephen Fengler, aptly nicknamed "The Flying Fenglers," whose remarkable running journey began in middle school tracks and culminated in a stunning Disney victory. What makes their achievement even more impressive? This was their first-ever runDisney experience. Stephen maintained a blistering pace around 5:30 per mile, even while still stopped for character photos – a power move that didn't prevent him from winning his division by 16 seconds. Meanwhile, Liz dominated the women's field, finishing with a commanding three-minute lead. The Fenglers aren't newcomers to shared victory podiums. Since fall 2022, they've claimed dual male-female wins in over 45 races throughout Connecticut, where they're active members of the Run 169 Town Society, challenging themselves to race in all 169 towns in the state. Their competitive backgrounds include collegiate careers at Southern Connecticut State University, where both earned conference honors. As Disneyland races prepare to pause after January 2026 for construction projects, we're reminded that sometimes the most magical Disney moments happen when family crosses the finish line together. The curtain closes on another magical runDisney race season as we unpack the highlights, challenges, and unforgettable moments of Springtime Surprise Weekend. From unexpected fire alarms at Animal Kingdom Lodge to Bob's show-stopping Groot costume that captured runDisney's official attention, this episode brims with stories that showcase why this community continues to thrive.Brooks made its grand entrance as runDisney's new footwear and apparel partner, bringing four exclusive shoe designs and size-inclusive options that impressed even skeptical runners. The virtual queue system operated smoothly, erasing concerns about long waits and immediate sellouts. The races themselves delivered on character experiences, with more stops than previous years including rare appearances from Mando and Grogu that generated impressive lines through Galaxy's Edge. Course improvements like relocated hydration stations demonstrated Run Disney's responsiveness to feedback, though Greg continues his campaign for Powerade during the 10K.Perhaps most meaningful was our Rise and Run meetup, where approximately 60 community members gathered to celebrate friendship and running accomplishments. As hosts, we reflect on how these connections have deepened over time, creating a welcoming space for both longtime friends and first-time attendees. With anticipation building for the Disneyland Halloween weekend and its attraction-themed medals, we close this season with gratitude for the community that makes every mile magical. Looking ahead to our fifth season of podcasting, we're eager to continue sharing this journey with you—whether it's at registration day, race weekends, or our inaugural podcast cruise in 2026!Rise and Run LinksRise and Run Podcast Facebook PageRise and Run Podcast InstagramRise and Run Podcast Website and ShopRise and Run PatreonPassport to RunRunningwithalysha Alysha's Run Coaching (Mention Rise And Run and get $10 off)Rise and Run Podcast Cruise Interest Form with Magic Bound Travel Send us a textSupport the showRise and Run Podcast is supported by our audience. Transitioning from winter's cozy layers to spring's sunny miles demands more than just switching your wardrobe—it requires understanding how your body adapts to rising temperatures. This comprehensive guide unpacks the science of heat acclimation, revealing how your body undergoes physiological changes that take 7-14 days to complete, from increasing plasma volume to developing more efficient sweating patterns. For runners facing the classic spring dilemma—training through cold months only to race on unexpectedly hot days—we provide actionable strategies that could save your race. Rather than blindly pushing through heat, learn to pivot with grace: run by effort instead of pace, create tiered race goals, strategically use water stations for both hydration and cooling, and recognize the warning signs of heat-related illness before they become dangerous. The spotlight then shifts to an insider's view of Run Disney's Springtime Surprise weekend through a delightful conversation with Ashley, a Run Disney veteran who completed a "perfect season" of Disney races, and her partner Cole, who's lacing up for his first-ever Disney race experience. Their dynamic reveals both the infectious enthusiasm of experienced runners and the nervous excitement of first-timers stepping up to a 10-miler.Through personal stories, practical advice, and a healthy dose of pixie dust, this episode illuminates how running becomes magical when shared with those we love—whether that's tackling Disney parks together or supporting each other's fitness journeys. By the final mile marker, you'll be equipped with strategies to make your spring running both safer and more joyful.Want to make Spring running your best season yet? From Disney culinary champions to running through every town in Connecticut, this episode of Rise and Run serves up a delicious mix of Disney dining discussions and an inspiring look at one of running's most unique communities. As the hosts close out their March Madness tournament of Disney table-service restaurants, passionate debates erupt over beloved dining spots like Beer Garden, Ohana, Boma, and California Grill. Watch as they navigate through tough decisions, occasional tie-breaking coin flips, and personal dining memories before crowning a champion that might surprise you.The heart of this episode features a captivating conversation with members of the Connecticut 169 running society. Founded in 2012, this remarkable community challenges runners to complete races in all 169 towns across Connecticut. Their stories reveal delightful traditions (like mandatory tutus for 100-town celebrations), the thrill of conquering "elusive towns" that rarely host races, and even dogs who've completed the entire challenge. As one member beautifully states, "You show up for the running, but you stay because of the people."Between heartfelt remembrances of a beloved community member, essential Springtime Surprise meet-up details, and a race report highlighting listener achievements across the country, this episode showcases what makes the running community so special—the connections formed while putting one foot in front of another.Planning to be at Walt Disney World for Springtime Surprise? Plus we cover just how incredibly wrong our guesses, for which characters would be at the race, actually were. Submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode. Crossing a finish line is like completing a chapter in the book of life – and oh, what a story we've woven this season with runDisney! Joined by Riley Claremont and Tracy Wu, we've packed this finale with laughter, insights, and tales that stitch together the fabric of a community bound by the rhythm of running shoes. From the personal triumphs to the awe-inspiring dedication of athletes like Alicia, a wounded veteran whose determination embodies the spirit of these events, we celebrate each heartbeat of progress. What starts with serenity and fireworks during a pre-race yoga session quickly transitions into gritty determination as we conquer races, costume challenges, and even our own physical hurdles like the infamous four-mile mark. Hear about my own dash across the Adventure Is Out There 10k finish line and how a well-struck pose can capture the essence of victory. We'll whisk you through the emotional tales and the power of a shared journey, all while acknowledging the behind-the-scenes magic conjured by our tireless crew. Tying the laces tighter, we delve into the practical: nourishment for the body and soul. We discuss the puzzles of race-day nutrition and the shared struggle against the sneaky foe that is nausea during a run. And then, with hearts full and hats signed, we bid you a temporary adieu, inviting you to carry the torch of motivation through to next season. So, keep those stories coming and let the sound of this episode be the wind at your back, propelling you toward the next starting line.
