We can't seem to get enough of John Kelly's FKT attempt on the Appalachian Trail, and we shared a few final thoughts about it before he finishes in the next couple of weeks. We also discussed Faith Kipyegon's upcoming attempt to break 4:00 for the mile, and we offered our predictions for the Western States Endurance Run this weekend. Of course, with the Peachtree Road Race coming up in Atlanta, we talked a bit about that, too.

GDP Script/ Top Stories for December 11th Publish Date: December 11th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Wednesday, December 11th and Happy birthday to Nikki Six ***12.11.24 - BIRTHDAY – NIKKI SIX*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. North Gwinnett's Diya Patel Graduates From Kennesaw State At Age 19 Okefenokee Swamp supporters urge aggressive refuge expansion to stop mining Gwinnett DA's Office sets national trend with FBI training award Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on picky toddlers. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: Early Graduate: North Gwinnett's Diya Patel Graduates From Kennesaw State At Age 19 Diya Patel, a 19-year-old graduate of Kennesaw State University, earned her psychology degree with honors while balancing a packed schedule of coursework, community contributions, and research. Driven by her dream of becoming a physician, Patel accelerated her studies, taking full course loads year-round to graduate early. She was an active leader on campus, serving as president of the Honors Advisory Leadership Council and founding organizations like the KSU chapter of It’s On Us to combat sexual assault. Patel also engaged in undergraduate research, volunteered with social service groups aiding refugees and unhoused people, and worked at an urgent care facility while honing her multilingual skills. Passionate about education, healthcare, and sustainable development, she aims to continue her global volunteer efforts alongside her medical career, inspired by the diverse, supportive community she found at KSU. STORY 2: Okefenokee Swamp supporters urge aggressive refuge expansion to stop mining The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has proposed a 22,000-acre expansion of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to protect the area through land purchases or conservation easements with willing landowners. The plan has garnered strong support from environmental advocates, who are urging the FWS to expand even further to permanently block mining projects near the refuge, including a controversial titanium mine by Twin Pines Mineral. Opponents of the mine argue it could harm water levels, wildlife, and the ecosystem, while Twin Pines claims the project would have no negative impact. While the expansion won't directly influence Georgia's permitting decisions, it reflects a broader effort to ensure long-term protection of this vital blackwater swamp. Local and state officials have also rallied in opposition to the mine, calling for stronger safeguards for the swamp's unique environment. STORY 3: Gwinnett DA's Office sets national trend with FBI training award This week, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office became the first DA's office in the U.S. to receive the Agency Trilogy Award from FBI-LEEDA, recognizing their entire command staff's completion of leadership courses. While many law enforcement agencies have earned this award, Gwinnett's achievement is unique among DA offices. The award highlights their commitment to professional development and leadership, aligning with DA Patsy Austin-Gatson's vision for serving the community. The training, which can be completed in about a month, enhances leadership skills and ethics, benefiting the office and its investigators. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: 08.05.24 OBITS_FINAL STORY 4: Second Chance Champion: GGC grad overcame debilitating accident to earn degree After surviving a devastating car crash in 2017, Jessica Rantamaki, an avid runner, faced a long recovery from severe injuries. Determined to reclaim her life, she not only returned to running, completing the Peachtree Road Race a year later, but also pursued a college degree at 47. Inspired by her experience and the young man responsible for the crash, she enrolled in political science to understand and potentially reform the justice system. Rantamaki's journey highlights the importance of community support and her desire to contribute positively, aiming to work with nonprofits aiding young or incarcerated individuals. STORY 5: Seckinger High School A State Finalist In Samsung's National STEM Competition Seckinger High School is among 300 U.S. public schools, and one of seven in Georgia, competing for the $100,000 grand prize in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow STEM Competition. As a state finalist, Seckinger received a $2,500 technology prize pack. Their project, EWSEEAI, uses AI to enhance school safety by analyzing security video and audio in real time. The competition encourages students in grades 6-12 to use STEM for innovative solutions to local issues, with this year's focus on school safety, climate crisis, and mental health. Samsung will award over $2 million in prizes. Break 3: And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on picky toddlers *** INGLES 1 (PICKY TODDLER) *** We’ll have final thoughts after this. It's a great afternoon here on the Cadillac Jack: My Second Act podcast. We're still recovering from the Fourth of July and have a few firey things to say. Strap in and tune out. I think. It's been a weird week for sure. Some people had the whole week off, some people worked every hour. We here on the show were on the clock the whole time. Donna hasn't stopped moving since last Thursday and has the oatmeal to show for it. Cadillac Jack completed the Peachtree Road Race for the first time, and set a record while doing it. Just not exactly the record direction you're thinking. We talk controversy in Country Music and intro the MLB All Star game, where Caddy thinks the Atlanta Braves should run the show. And Donna brings up the very important topic of loneliness and its affect on today's health crisis. Have a thought for it? Let us know. 7704646024.

West and stage managed by Tina Barnhill, the story follows Christopher Robin as he considers running away with Pooh, Piglet, and other friends due to the fear of being sent away for education. The production offers multiple showtimes, and reservations are recommended. Pollack, known for his contributions to ESPN's college football coverage and "College GameDay" since 2011, was part of a larger round of layoffs that affected notable figures such as Jeff Van Gundy, Jalen Rose, Keyshawn Johnson, Max Kellerman, Suzy Kolber, Todd McShay, Matt Hasselback, and Steve Young. The rising senior, standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 305 pounds, is highly regarded as a four-star prospect by 247Sports. He is ranked as the 18th best interior offensive line prospect in the nation and the 33rd best player in Georgia. Flynn's outstanding performance on the field earned him recognition as an all-state, all-region, and all-county selection in the previous season. UCF has secured a talented player in Flynn, who is poised to contribute to their football program.   We'll have final thoughts after this   Break 4:  Henssler 60 Thanks again for listening to today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. The Abbie DeLoach Foundation awarded scholarships to 17 students and organizations at its 7th annual scholarship class luncheon held on April 14th. The event celebrated academic excellence, exemplary service work, or athletic commitment. Among the recipients were two Cobb County students: Jaden Saunders, a college sophomore who graduated from Allatoona and is a golfer at Savannah State University, and Maddie Black, a Georgia Southern Nursing student who graduated from Harrison, is planning to become a CRNA and is a member of Kappa Delta sorority. The foundation was established in memory of Abbie DeLoach, who died in a tragic highway crash in April 2015, along with four fellow nursing students. The foundation's mission is to continue her good works, and 106 recipients have received ADF scholarships to date. Marietta City Council has discussed its zoning code for the first time since the implementation of a six-month freeze on apartment applications. The council voted 6-1 to approve the freeze, concerned about the number of developers proposing multifamily buildings in the area. City staff have been directed to present maps and ordinances showing what the “current lay of the land is,” before conducting a study examining the zoning code and its relationship to apartments. Mayor Steve Tumlin and the council have rejected many apartment proposals, favoring low-density, owner-occupied development, citing concerns such as crime and a lack of upkeep by landlords. Students at Marietta Middle School are participating in the Compost Connectors program, which teaches students about urban agriculture by having them collect food waste and turn it into compost. The program is run by Cobb Master Gardener Michelle Gambon, who volunteers with Food Well Alliance. Students use compost cranks to mix the compost and help break it down. Once it is no longer recognizable, it is used to enrich the school's garden. The goal of the program is to help students understand their role in building healthier communities by growing crops with compost. The program is in its second year of a three-year pilot and is hoping to expand to more schools. Georgia Bulldogs baseball Redshirt freshman and Walker School graduate Charlie Condon has been one of the top hitters in the country this season. He is hitting over .400 and has already hit 18 home runs. Condon's walk-up music is The Rolling Stones' classic "Paint It Black," which he said is a fun song that gets him in the right mindset. He said it is a song that his teammates and the fans enjoy. His teammates and Dawg baseball fans probably enjoy it a little more because the song means their star slugger is at the plate.   Condon has noted that the level of competition he is facing is definitely higher than what he saw in high school,  but he has been able to adjust to the much more challenging pitching he is facing in the SEC, crediting the competition for improving his game. He has spent much of the past two years working on his body to add muscle to his tall and lean frame. The 45th annual Possum Trot 10K will be held on June 17 at the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell. The event allows runners to race along the Chattahoochee River and supports the center's environmental education programs and wildlife rehabilitation efforts. Participants can choose between an in-person or virtual 10K and Fun Run, with all runners receiving free photos and a commemorative t-shirt, and 10K runners receiving a finisher medal. The race is also a Peachtree Road Race qualifier for 2024. The CNC's work helps over 700 injured animals annually and hosts 40,000 students each year for environmental education programs.  Kennesaw State University's Executive Master of Business Administration has been ranked as the best in Georgia and among the top in the world for the seventh consecutive year, according to CEO Magazine's 2023 Global Executive MBA rankings. The program, offered by the Michael J. Coles College of Business, was ranked third in the country and No. 12 in the world, earning it "Tier One" status for the ninth year in a row. CEO Magazine also ranked KSU's MBA program as a Tier One program and named the online MBA among the best in the world. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews      -            -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com          See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cobb bus driver arrested for entering 10-year-old student's home

Marietta Daily Journal Podcast

A Marietta man claiming to be a school bus driver was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly entered the home of a 10-year-old student, according to an arrest warrant. Rayudu Nagabhushana Gogineni, 55, of Marietta, is accused of entering the student's home while school was off for Presidents Day on Monday. He was charged with felony burglary and misdemeanor loitering. Gogineni was arrested Wednesday evening and is being held in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on $20,000 bond, according to jail records. Police allege Gogineni entered the home of the student's mother off Delk Road, asking to see her daughter. The mother told police Gogineni had been to her home three times and questioned neighbors about where her daughter lives, per the warrant. Police wrote in the warrant that Gogineni is “the bus driver for the homeowner's 10-year-old daughter.” The home listed in the warrant is zoned for Powers Ferry Elementary School in the Cobb County School District. A school district representative said they are cooperating fully with police in the investigation. A Cobb County man has received a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to shooting at a man and his family at a Vinings apartment complex in July, District Attorney Flynn Broady's office announced. Javan Isles, 22, was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm while committing a felony. The charges stemmed from a July 5 incident in which Isles shot at another person. The victim, who was not named, was shot at by a person driving a black SUV, the DA's office said. Though no one was injured, the victim told police it was the second time he had been shot at that day. Investigators were able to identify the vehicle and stopped it the next day. Inside, they found a shell casing and identified Isles as the driver during the shooting. Isles later told police his brother, who was affiliated with a gang, had been shot at the same day. Isles then sought out the victim, “and shot at him after seeing what he believed to be a long object in the victim's hand,” the DA's office said. In addition to his five-year prison sentence, Superior Court Judge Sonja Brown gave Isles seven years on probation. Cobb County commissioners are expected to vote next week on hiring three consultants to plan for a 2024 referendum on transit expansion in the county. The hiring of the three firms — expected to cost taxpayers around $530,000 — comes ahead of a planned public outreach tour this year to begin pitching voters on the tax-hike referendum. Working in conjunction with the Department of Transportation, the firms will be primarily tasked with developing a project list for the referendum. County leaders, thus far, have given little indication of what that list might include, though Commissioner Jerica Richardson suggested in a recent interview with the MDJ that a heavy rail option is likely off the table. But recent moves suggest the county will move toward a scenario favored by Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and her two Democratic colleagues, which would be a sales tax of up to 1% for up to 30 years to fund mass transit expansion. If the three agenda items are approved Tuesday, the board would hire firms WSP USA, Kimley-Horn, and CDM Smith to guide planning for the referendum. With temperatures in the mid-70s Thursday, children, parents and babysitters came out in force to enjoy a balmy February morning at the park. At East Cobb Park off Roswell Road, kids played on swings, monkey bars and other equipment. While the sky was overcast, rain did not materialize. Atlanta broke the all-time record for February temperatures Wednesday, reaching 81 degrees, said Carmen Hernandez, a forecaster for the Peachtree City office of the National Weather Service. The previous high for February was 80 degrees, and was set back in 1996. In Marietta, Thursday's high was 78, with rain and a low of 60 forecasted for Thursday night. Friday's forecast has a high of 69 and a low of 53, with rain likely. Carmen said of the warm weather, "mostly it's just we have a ridge of high pressure over areas." That pressure, and the fact that a front hasn't come through the region recently, has allowed the air to get thicker and warmer. The City of Kennesaw announced the 2023 Kennesaw Grand Prix 5K series schedule. The series, the premier 5K race series in north Georgia, is run on a mostly flat and fast asphalt course, professionally timed and USAT&F Certified, through downtown Kennesaw and Swift-Cantrell Park. The course is perfect for competitive runners seeking a qualifying time for the Peachtree Road Race. But the festival-like atmosphere and plentiful food and drink make these races perfect for beginner runners/walkers, as well as families. The four 5K runs are part of the Fit City Kennesaw initiative, encouraging residents to become more active and engage in wellness-related activities. Registration can be done online at Race Roster dot com.  The entry fee of $35 includes a race t-shirt. Early bird registration is now open for $30 per race or $105 for the series. Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes. Company Coming Up:  This company coming up was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in historic Cabbagetown in Atlanta. They have raised $5.3M to date and solve a very real problem in several markets. The company is called BoxLock and they are shaping the future of unattended delivery technology. What does that even mean Birdsong? So thousands of companies in healthcare, construction, transportation and warehousing have serious problems regarding safety, reliability, and efficiency when it comes to assets that are stored or transferred. Think of anything ranging from tools on a construction site to shipping containers to even election boxes. BoxLock's Supply Chain Access Control Platform is used by companies like UPS Healthcare, University of Nebraska Healthcare, LUX Diagnostics (local to Atlanta), just to name a few. This market is massive and I just love finding not only passionate CEO's like Brad Ruffkess who are pioneering this field but then learn they are walking distance to Carroll Street Cafe!  They are hiring right now and trust me when I say this: growing very very fast. Links in the show notes. Beta Product of the Week:   This week's beta product of the week comes from two Auburn engineers and it is called Smart Stall. Nearly everything in the bathroom workflow is automated and touchless. You can get soap, paper towels, water, dry hands and a quick flush without touching any surface, so why are we still latching and unlatching the bathroom stall? Chase and Wynn are the co-founders solving this problem with an early prototype already built. If you are a building owner, tenant rep, or CEO looking to automate your latches, check out SmartStall. Link in the show notes.  Jump to the Front: This is a new format called Jump to the Front. For companies who are offering early access to product launches and customer codes, we deliver them here. I just caught up with Christian Ries, CEO of Zeto. Zeto is the trusted home manager for your house. Through their reliable network of vetted partners, they can easily knock out to-do's, meet vendors on location and respond to emergencies 24/7 all through text. They are humming! Satisfied customers are all over Atlanta as the hassle has now believe relieved from the household. If you're interested in skipping the wait and jumping to the front, put Five and Thrive in the comments section of the wait list form.  Event of the Week: Mark your calendars for the third stop of the ATL Unlocked Tour. This event is held on Thursday July 21st from 5-7 p.m. at the ATDC in midtown. The signup link is in the show notes. The first stop was at the Atlanta Tech Village, the second stop was at the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship, and this one is right in the heart of midtown on Georgia Tech's campus. It is entrepreneurs night and I know this will have several entrepreneurs mixing and mingling.   I hope everyone had a happy, relaxing, and safe Fourth of July and for everyone who ran the Peachtree Road Race, I hope you're not as sore as I am.   Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  — Company Coming Up: This company is out of Mobile, Alabama lead by Walt Armentrout is called HeartLegacy. What started out as a video product for Senior Living Communities to help preserve life stories has morphed into a SaaS platform for businesses to leverage video. They have two different mobile apps, even titled differently for each market. The one for Senior LIving is called RemyGo, and the other for sales teams with over 250 five star reviews on the app store is called SalesMail. Like email but salesmail. This is a tell tale sign of an entrepreneur heads down in one market (senior living) but still keeping a pulse to where another market is pulling. There is probably a wonderful blog post or even book to be written about this pivot and evolution but in the meantime Walt and the team are growing fast and scaling. Episode Highlights [03:17] Anne's Childhood When she was a child, her parents noticed she walked on her heels. Bone deformities grew on her feet, but she couldn't get surgery until she was 13. After her surgery, she wasn't given crutches or a wheelchair; instead, the doctors gave her an orthopedic boot to push her forward on her feet. When she took off her cast, she found that it was easier to run than walk. [06:30] The Start of Her Running Journey She joined the Otahuhu Athletics Club in South Auckland at 14 years old. She tried high jumping and long jumping but ultimately found that she loved running. She finished third in the Auckland Senior 800m Champs and was recruited by her first coach into his athletic squad. When she began running, the longest distance in Olympic Games for women was 800m. [10:06] Progressing Into the Major Leagues She started racing cross country in the senior races at 14 years old. At 15, she won the New Zealand road championships and Auckland vs. Waikato. Then at 16, she raced in the New Zealand championships in the 1500m but wasn't able to go to Munich though she qualified for the Olympics because she was too young. She finished ninth in the World Championships in Belgium at 17 years old. Listen to the full episode to hear more about how she got to represent New Zealand and travel for free many times! [14:08] How She Started Road Racing In 1981, she left New Zealand with her husband and headed to England. Anne got her airfare to England by getting into a New Zealand cross country team to go to Madrid in March 1981. She had no intentions of pursuing the sport, but Rod Dixon told her to try road racing. Anne then came to the United States and finished third in a 10k in New Orleans. [19:58] The First Professional Race Back then, they just raced and won trophies; but road race directors wanted the sport to go professional to stop the under-the-table payments. Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, also supported the change so he can sponsor runners. In June 1981, Anne won a 15km race in Portland, Oregon — the first professional race — where there was equal prize money. Despite the consequences, she believed she deserved a chance to earn money, too. Because she was only in the United States on a visitor's visa, she got in trouble since it was illegal to accept money and those who do can get a lifetime ban from the sport. [25:28] How Her Career Took Off The United States road race directors ignored the ban, and allowed her to continue her sport. She was able to race at the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta and continued road racing. By the end of 1981, she had earned $22,000. She also signed with Nike, becoming the first female runner to sign with the company. She eventually chose to become an American taxpayer and deal with immigration. [28:02] Helping Athletes Grow Races becoming professional shook up a lot of sports and gave opportunities for student-athletes to get sponsorship agreements. Becoming a full-time athlete allowed her to get better accomplishments. She was one of the first to get the H-1B visa, which is now used by many athletes. She was only reinstated a week before racing in Brisbane at the Commonwealth Games. Anne believes that athletes should get opportunities to grow when they're young. [36:15] Anne's Many Achievements She set the world record in the 5000m at Mt Smart Stadium. In 1982, she was undefeated in the United States and broke the course records of each race that she ran in. Her two biggest decisions were going pro in the United States and changing coaches. Listen to the full episode to hear all about the amazing races and accomplishments that she garnered in her running career! [36:15] Transitioning Out She retired due to mental reasons since she started losing focus and discipline. Once she made her decision, her coach, John Davies, said she just needed six months of sabbatical, but she knew she was done. In 1993, she founded what became the largest women's only event in the United States. She put her passion into building that event and empowering women to participate in the 5000k race. [45:16] The Biggest Lesson Her sport taught her how to live a focused, calm, and healthy life, which was particularly useful during the pandemic. Learning to live a simple life is the greatest gift. 7 Powerful Quotes “Every dream is to go to the Olympic Games and you can always look back and say, ‘It might have been my one and only chance.'” “So what I was getting out of my sport then was a whole bunch of world travel free, which was absolutely amazing. But who knew where it was all going to go? So I split my career into [...] 11 years as an amateur, and then things could have gone backwards or forwards.” “If I can earn money out of my talent, then I want the same chance.” “And so all these people go, ‘Well, they should be doing it for the love of their country' and so forth. Well, I did it for the love of my country for 11 years, and I was almost lost. I wouldn't be sitting here with another 11 years of even better accomplishments if I had not been proficient.” “How do you grow athletes if you don't give them a chance when they're young?” “In ‘81, I was two weeks away from being gone from the sport; and in ‘82, I had a world record, a gold medal, and was unbeaten. So here's the difference my decision made in my life.” “I think if you can learn to live a very simple life, which we do learn to live a very disciplined, focused, but also a very simple life as professional athletes, that's [...] one of the greatest gifts that you get.” Resources Gain exclusive access and bonuses to Pushing the Limits Podcast by becoming a patron! "That Saturday when I set the record and I was in the tent waiting for them to start the awards ceremony, dozens of people came up to talk to me, and they were from all over the United States! I couldn't imagine why. I'm just doing what I like to do!" Betty Lindberg is a local legend in her hometown of Atlanta, GA. She started running at 63 years old, and now, at 97, she's breaking world records. Last month, Betty ran the USATF Master's 5K Championships in Atlanta, and set a new world record for the 95–99 age group. (She finished in 55:48, smashing the previous record by more than 30 minutes.) Breaking that record was no accident: Betty is fiercely competitive (mostly with herself), and she takes her training seriously. (She works out six days a week. On the seventh day, she rests and enjoys her weekly hair appointment.) In this conversation, Betty shares her running story, talks about where her competitive drive comes from, and talks about her mid-race mimosa stops at the Peachtree Road Race every year. Frank Shorter.  Yes that Frank Shorter.  It was one of those interviews where I was hopelessly overwhelmed by content and just did my best to touch on a couple fun things with him.  But, the rich tapestry of Frank's life does not fit easily into a 20 minute conversation – so I'm going to fill in some of the blanks here. Frank was born, ironically in Munich Germany, where he would eventually return to win the Gold Medal in the marathon at the 1972 Olympics.  His Father was a physician in the army.  Frank grew up in a troubled home in upstate New York.  He started running to get away from an abusive father.  Running gave him the freedom we all know and love.  To get him away from his father, his mother arranged to have him sent to a prep school in Massachusetts where he was given the space to expand his running talents.  He went on to run at Yale for his undergraduate and won a number of NCAA titles.  He moved on to Gainesville Florida to study for his law degree – all the while training and racing at an elite level.  The thing about Franks journey in the 70's was that he showed up at all the marathon runner hotspots with all the legends.  He trained with that famous Florida track club with Jeff Galloway and crew.  He was in Oregon with Prefontaine.  Frank taught Steve how to Ski.  Frank was with Steve before he was killed.  Frank won the elite Fukuoka Marathon . He was the #1 ranked marathon runner in the USA for 5 straight years and in the world for 3. He won the gold medal at the Munich Olympics in 1972.  You may not remember 1972, but this was the Olympics where the world learned about terrorism.  A crew of Palestinians broke into athlete's village and held the Israeli Olympic team hostage, murdering some of them. Frank was sleeping on the balcony and heard the gunshots.  Coming full circle, Frank was right there on Boylston Street in Boston in 2013 when the bombs went off.  He won the silver medal in the 1976 games losing to an unknow East German athlete, who most likely was a drug cheat.  Frank has become instrumental in removing drugs from the Olympics – a battle that still rages. Through all this he trained himself with an uncanny mixture of speedwork and volume.  He managed to stay healthy and race across 100+ mile weeks for a decade.  Frank eventually ended up in Boulder where he was the founder of the iconic Boulder Boulder race.  He's an amazing athlete, a humble, kind and generous guy and I'm sure I'll be talking to him again. He even has an IMDB page for his roles in several movies!  Great guy, full life, enjoyed meeting him.  … What's going on in my world?  I'm still training for the Flying Pig in May.  My knee is still a mess, but I'm enjoying when I can. I try to get Ollie out, but the weather has been horrific and I'm at the point in my life where I see less and less merit in unnecessary misery. Hey – a quick heads up – did you see Steve Runner is podcasting again?  Yeah – Pheddipidations is back from the dead.  And it's not the angry political Steve.  It's the old runner Steve.  Give it a resubscribe and listen.  It's good to hear his rational voice. I did manage to get a couple of great training runs out in the woods.  We got a cold snap right after a heavy snow. With the pandemic traffic in my woods the trail was packed down and hard and great for running.  I got out and it was great.  I remembered some of the joy I used to feel being out alone in the woods with the dog.  The cold, crisp air and the packed trail.  Really good. I've been getting beaten up fairly well with my new role at work.  But I'm liking it.  I just focus on blocking the time and doing the work.  I'm at a point in my career where I don't have to worry about failure and that frees me up to be creative.  Makes the work an ecstasy versus a chore. And that's the secret, my friends.  Remember the gift. On with the show. About Zero ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer is the leading national nonprofit with the mission to end prostate cancer. He won his first U.S. national titles in 1970 in the three mile and six mile events. He also was the U.S. national six mile/10,000 meter champion in 1971, 1974, 1975 and 1977.   After graduating from Yale, Shorter chose to pursue a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of New Mexico. However, he dropped out after six weeks after classes began to impact his training regime. Soon, he moved to Florida to study for a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville because of the excellence of the environment and the opportunity to train with Jack Bacheler as members of the Florida Track Club (FTC), founded by Jimmy Carnes, then the head coach of the Florida Gators track and field team.[10] Bacheler was regarded as America's best distance runner, having qualified for the finals of the 5,000-meter race at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.[11] The FTC's core nucleus of Shorter, Bacheler and Jeff Galloway qualified for the 1972 Olympics and their success made Gainesville the Mecca of distance running on the East Coast in the early 1970s.[12]   Shorter won the U.S. national cross-country championships four times (1970–1973). He was the U.S. Olympic Trials champion in both the 10,000-meter run and the marathon in both 1972 and 1976. He also won both the 10,000-meter run and the marathon at the 1971 Pan American Games. Shorter was a four-time winner of the Fukuoka Marathon (1971–1974), generally recognized as the most prestigious marathon in the world at that time and held on a very fast course. His career best of 2:10:30 was set at that race on December 3, 1972. Several months later, on March 18, 1973, Shorter won the elite Lake Biwa Marathon in 2:12:03. He won the prestigious 7-mile Falmouth Road Race on Cape Cod in 1975 and 1976 and Atlanta's 10-kilometer Peachtree Road Race in 1977.   Shorter achieved his greatest recognition in the marathon, and he is the only American athlete to win two medals in the Olympic marathon.[13] At the Munich Games—which coincidentally is Shorter's place of birth— he finished fifth in the 10,000-meter final, breaking the American record for the event that he had established in his qualifying heat.[8] A few days later, he won the gold medal in the marathon. This ultimate achievement was marred by an impostor, West German student Norbert Sudhaus,[14] who ran into Olympic Stadium ahead of Shorter. Shorter was not bothered by the silence from the crowd who had been duped into thinking that he was running for the silver medal. Shorter was confident that he was going to win the gold medal because he knew that no competing runner had passed him.[15] He received the James E. Sullivan Award afterwards as the top amateur athlete in the United States.[8] At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Shorter dropped out of the 10,000 meters in order to concentrate exclusively on the marathon, winning the silver medal in the marathon[8] and finishing behind previously unheralded Waldemar Cierpinski of East Germany.[16] Cierpinski was later implicated as a part of the state-sponsored doping program by East German track and field research files uncovered by Werner Franke at the Stasi headquarters in Leipzig in the late 1990s. There were suspicions about other East German athletes during the Montreal Olympics, including the East German women's swimming team led by Kornelia Ender; the East German women won eleven of the thirteen events.[17]   From 2000 to 2003, Shorter was the chairman of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, a body that he helped to establish.[18]   Shorter was featured as a prominent character, played by Jeremy Sisto, in the 1998 film Without Limits. The film follows the life of Shorter's contemporary, training partner, Olympic teammate and sometime rival, Steve Prefontaine.[18] Shorter was the next to last person to see Prefontaine alive before he died in an automobile accident.   Shorter was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 1984, the USA National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1989,[8] and the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in 1998.   A long-time resident of Boulder, Colorado, Shorter co-founded the Bolder Boulder in 1979. The annual 10k race is a popular Memorial Day event, which culminates with a tribute to U.S. Armed Forces at Folsom Field at the University of Colorado. A life-size bronze statue of Shorter stands outside the stadium. Section two –Varmint -   Outro Ok my friends that's episode 4-474 of the RunRunLive Podcast.   I still plan to limp through the Flying Pig marathon but my knee is not responding as I hoped it would.  It is weak, unstable and painful.  Basically, well I want to use a family unfriendly word here, but let's just say it's not good. Frank Shorter ran the 1976 Olympic Marathon with a bad knee and came in 2nd.  Oy! I have been having a lot of trouble finding the time and inspiration to write and produce this show.  I know it's getting stale, and you deserve better than that.  I'm considering ways to make it less of a lift for me.  Maybe break the sections up into individual, shorter shows that I could drop more frequently.  Maybe find a theme.  Or create multiple short shows from the various themes I cover here.  Then you could pick and choose what you wanted to listen to. We'll see how it goes.  One step at a time. I'm heading down to Dallas tomorrow morning and I just realized it's time change weekend here.  Meaning I'm going to have to roll out of bed at 3:30 AM body-clock time to start a long week with a nice dose of jetlag.  Heard an interesting comment on a call this week.  We were prepping for a executive meeting with one of our customers.  There were two senior executives from our side.  They were talking about a big deal that needed to close at this customer.  One of the Execs said to the other “You need to make it personal.”  That struck me.  After all the professionalism is sorted out every business transaction is personal.  I've always tried to avoid that.  Making business personal. But you can't.  It's personal whether you want it to be or not.  But making it personal allows you to leverage empathy – so it's not necessarily a bad thing.  How about that for a thing to try this week? Make it personal. And I'll see you out there. And I'll see you out there. MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Rachel -> Coach Jeff ->
