Vivian Host's rave credentials go deep. Much deeper than we realised in fact, and we've been friends with her for over a decade. There are several entry-points through which you could have discovered Vivian. Maybe it's her podcast, Rave to the Grave, where she interviews DJs, dancers and ‘freaks of all ages', from legendary house vocalist Barbara Tucker to performance art pervert Kevin Carpet. In Vivian's words, RTTG exists to document ‘a vital and resonant global (sub)culture that has often been ignored, dismissed, trivialised and poorly documented.' Amen!Or maybe you know Vivian through her journalism? A former editor-in-chief of both Thump and XLR8R, she also hosted Red Bull Radio's Peak Time show, once the internet's best resource for audio interviews with unsung heroes from countercultural scenes across the world.Or maybe it's simply through throwing parties and DJing under the name Star Eyes. After breaking through as a teenager Vivian spent the late ‘90s and early 2000s becoming one of the most prominent jungle DJs on the West Coast (she may have both been the first woman from LA regularly playing jungle at parties, and one of the first people full-stop to play UK garage in the States). After relocating to New York in 2004 she co-founded Trouble & Bass, a party and record label with an anything-goes approach to genres – far from common 20 years ago. T&B were also the first crew to book grime artists in New York. There are a lot of firsts in Vivian's catalogue. In this episode we naturally talk about the current state of play in LA, but we also go back to Vivian's formative years exploring the city's nitrous-fuelled punk and rave scenes, how she navigated the world of jungle as a teenager, San Francisco's ‘90s free parties, and being held up at gunpoint by dodgy club owners in New York's wild mid-2000s. It's Vivian's story, but it also doubles as an education on how raving evolved in the US throughout the 1990s and ‘00s. By the end of the interview we were equal parts inspired, envious and exhausted. As ever, if you enjoyed this episode of No Tags, do consider rating, reviewing and subscribing on your podcast app of choice, as it does really help. We'd also ask you to consider subscribing to our paid tier, which costs a humble £5 a month and helps us continue hosting, editing and transcribing extensive interviews like this one. When 1980s electro and freestyle music from Miami, New York, and Los Angeles touched down in Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities, it ignited a wildfire in the minds of local DJs and soundsystem operators. Out of the hoods – in Brazil known as favelas – emerged the ass-shaking sounds of baile funk. You may have heard baile funk hits by Pablo Vittar, Diplo & MIA, and Karol G, but on this episode we're taking it way way back to the roots. Raised in Fortaleza in Northeast Brazil, Priscilla Cavalcante a.k.a. House of Pris joins me to talk about her experiences in first-wave baile funk and plays us some of the most important samples and beats that started the whole movement. We also talk about her baile funk party in Miami, Florida called Proibidae, the process of saving lost anthems of the 1990s, plus furacão, pancadão, and the wild wonderful world of Brazilian funk parties. Hosted by Vivian Host (aka Star Eyes). For more, follow @ravetothe.grave on Instagram and visit RavetotheGrave.org.

Our latest entry to the Global Mix returns with a striking recording by Australian powerhouse AK Sports. The talented DJ and producer gifted us with a fantastic entry to the series, as she highlights her wild and erratic style all while exploring a variety of driving, bass-focused genres. Buckle up, this gets crazy. Sydney-born, Los Angeles, and London-based AK Sports found herself pioneering nu-rave sounds through the means of high NRG sets that explore a multitude of genres that range from (but are not limited to) beefy breaks, deep-cut bass, and exhilarating blends of techno. This frenzy of sound can not only be heard throughout her sets but also within her immensely impressive productions too. AK Sports recently had the opportunity to host a Boiler Room in Los Angeles alongside her WARP MODE family, consisting of Ak Sports, Bianca Oblivion, and Star Eyes. Allowing her to showcase her fierce mixing style in real-time, with the recording due to be released later this year. Having released on Club Glow with Kessler, Dansu Discs, Raiders Records (Berlin), Toofelz Music, Mad Decent, and most recently on Bristol's Shall Not Fade it is clear that AK remains dedicated to her craft. Not to mention a slew of remixes for artists like Bailey Ibbs and Pagan. She is constantly pushing the boundaries with her productions in an attempt to create an arsenal of chaotic compositions to light up dance floors worldwide. Her entry to the Four Four Global Mix Series is no different, as AK Sports continues to raise the bar with this slamming mix that explores and showcases the artists' flair, encompassing a mixture of mind-bending textures and bass-driven sounds that results in AK Sports' signature sound. Frantic, intriguing, and powerfully infectious. Stick this on. In this episode I explore the melody to the classic tune Star Eyes, focusing on organizing this tune into two distinct parts: A and B.

Star eyes is a journalist, party promoter, magazine editor, radio host, label boss, and powerhouse producer. Welcome to the Umoja Hi-Fi podcast. Umoja Hi-Fi is a seven person DJ collective formed in Los Angeles in 1992 and we are active to this very day! Subscribers to this podcast may be used to the various DJ mixes we’ve been dropping on this channel, and those are going to continue, but today we’ve got something special - we'll talk to DJ Tomas's long time friend and colleague Star Eyes, a.k.a. Vivian Host, an accomplished DJ, producer, music journalist, radio host and podcaster in her own right. DJ Tomas met Vivian in LA in the early '90s around the same time that Umoja Hi-Fi formed. Tomas booked Star Eyes for one of her first gigs at, an after-hours event at Nova Express cafe, he wrote and edited with her at URB and XLR8R magazines, and watched her career flourish at Red Music Music in New York. Speaking of Red Bull, Vivian's New York party crew Trouble & Bass won the 2013 Red Bull Culture Clash event -- a true underdog upset, besting Max Glazer's Federation Sound, Que Bajo and hip-hop producer Just Blaze. Since then, she's only continued to rise. Dubbed "Brooklyn's Queen of Heavy Bass," hear how Vivian discovered reggae sound system culture, became a pioneering US drum & bass DJ, and forged a successful music journalism career along the way.
The second of our two back-to-back expanded nights brings a new announcer, and our regular bass player: the voice introduces himself as “Archibald Cresby”. This may or may not be for real, but Bob Bain on guitar, Ray Sherman on piano, Ralph Collier playing drums, and Jud De Naut (once again getting his name mangled!) on bass are all very much the real deal. After the “Sweet Georgia Brown” intro, the quartet swings through “The Continental”, then Margo chimes in to sing “Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe”. Bob introduces Ray's arrangement of “Star Eyes” (with some great changes behind Bob's brilliant soloing). “Always True To You” is a good vehicle for Margo, and “Tenderly” the perfect showcase for the quartet's sensitivities. Margo returns with a brand new ballad called “My Ginny”. The quartet plays the moody “Miserlou” (with Ralph playing some very cool bongos). Margo brightens the mood with “Walkin' My Baby Back Home”, then the quartet races for home with Bob's great arrangement of the Mozart theme, renamed “Turkish Boogie”, a flag waver and perfect closer for our extended live radio date!

This was a gathering of a group of then young men, mostly in their 20s in January 1959 in New York for this informal get-together. All of these men were now living in New York and had established themselves on the national Jazz scene. Several were part of some great working bands and some were freelancing. They all came together on this recording. All of these men were born and had their first early musical experiences in their hometown of Memphis Tennessee. On trumpets: Louis Smith and Booker Little. On saxophones: George Coleman on tenor saxophone and Frank Strozier on alto. The great Phineas Newborn on piano, Newborn's brother Calvin on guitar. On bass George Joyner who became Jamil Nasser when he adopted Islam. On drums, the reliable and tasteful Charles Crosby. Only four tunes make up this date and all of the musicians are featured to a greater or lesser extent in long solos. Phineas Newborn carries "After Hours". Frank Strozier is featured on "Star Eyes". Everyone gets a chance on "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" and "Blue 'n' Boogie" These four tunes were all jam session favourites and everyone scores a hit on each one. Sit back and enjoy, "The Young Men from Memphis".
It's no secret that Vivian Host, a.k.a Star Eyes, has been a huge influence to Jubilee for many years; they even used to be roommates. Star Eyes was once the editor of XLR8R Magazine (as well as former Editor-in-Chief of THUMP) and had originally co-founded NYC's iconic, now sadly defunct, label Trouble and Bass. She's often cited as among the the first to claim "bass music" in the US overall. Back during the time Jubilee started going out in NYC and honing her craft, Star Eyes was also part of a notable DJ duo called Syrup Girls. Eventually, the two became friends, started working, spinning, and eventually touring together. These days Star Eyes is busy as ever running her own new label and party, Chaos Clan, hosting a show on RBMA Radio, The Vortex, and, as always, crafting bass-heavy club tracks. In addition to two DJ sets from Jubilee and Star Eyes, the longtime... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After a two-week hiatus, The Armory Podcast is back with this fantastic guest mix from Charleston's DJ Skitch. Press play. Get Down. Entering the industry in 2004, Skitch has jumped on the opportunity to play with well-known international talents such as The Crystal Method, Hyper, DJ Magic Mike, DJ Icey, Baby Anne, Plump DJ's, Deekline & Wizard, Krafty Kuts, Napt, Fort Knox Five, Micro, Charles Feelgood, Planet of the Drums, Star Eyes, Curtis B, KMFX, Nero, Datsik & Excision to name a few, as well as some exclusive performances with MC's such as Sporty-O, Whiskey Pete & MC Collaborator. Always holding his own unique style on the decks, his incredible selection of in-your-face breaks always keeps the floor moving and heads bobbing. Over the years, Skitch has become one of Charleston's favorite beat selectors and continues to play a dominant role in the Southeast EDM community alongside his well known labels, Infectious Entertainment & 357 Style and most famous, Future Sound Of Breaks. Currently holding down multiple residencies in Charleston, he is certainly one of the hardest working DJs in the industry. Don't miss a chance to see this Breakbeat guru mashup the club night. "Ghost Ship Apocalypse was an experience I'll never forget. I've been lucky enough to play the last three years and the party keeps getting better. The production value and art were insane. I've got to give a shout out to my family in the Janky Barge for putting a fantastic room together yet again. I've always prided myself on being a shapeshifter, tailoring my sets to the party and the crowd, so when I found out I was playing on the Space Cowboys' Unimog, I thought I'd bring a little more of an old school breakbeat flavor to my set than one might usually find. It was especially fun to dig in the crates for classics like the Beat Assassins' remix of "Repeated Groove" and the Rogue Element's take on The Prodigy's "Girls." Those tunes, and some personal edits of "Rhythm Is a Dancer" and 2 Bad Mice's "Bombscare" really prove that dance music doesn't just have to be about the newest of the new." - Ground Control Jason Apple, aka Ground Control, is a San Francisco based bass music producer and DJ. His productions draw heavily from bassline and early rave music, with stops on the way at dubstep, funky, and electro, and breakbeat. Ground Control's debut record, "Be Nice," was released on En:Vision Records in June 2008. He has since released music on such labels as Play Me Recordings, Hot N Heavy, 9G Records, and Sleevin Records. His ongoing collaborations with San Francisco DJ/producer DJ ICON have been featured on illeven: eleven Records, Rat Recordings, and Vibrance Recordings. He recently started a side project, Shouts!, for his more melodic, housier output, while still keeping an eye firmly on the dancefloor. As a DJ, Ground Control has played at some of the Bay Area's biggest parties, including Icebreakers Ball, Freqo de Mayo, Ghostship, and Breakfast of Champions, sharing the stage with Tipper, Adam Freeland, Jack Beats, Calvertron, DJ Icey, Bassbin Twins, Star Eyes, and Reid Speed to name just a very few. Brooklyn Queen of Heavy Bass Star Eyes is known for throwing down raw, dirty underground tracks, from grime bangers to ghetto house, Miami bass classics to speaker-rattling dubstep stormers. Spinning for more than 15 years, this veteran bad girl has always loved low-end—she was one of first female drum & bass DJs in the US (and a resident of S.F.’s long-running Eklektic night) as well as half of the Syrup Girls (called “New York’s best-kept secret” by New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones). Star Eyes has played all over the world, from the Vans Warped Tour to Sonar Festival, from London’s famed Fabric to Berlin squats, from Cape Town to Burning Man, and opened for such acts as Diplo, Moby, AFI, The XX, The Streets, and Girl Talk. In 2006, Drop the Lime and Star Eyes founded the now world-famous Trouble & Bass crew/record label, which also includes AC Slater, The Captain, and affiliates worldwide. In June 2009, the Trouble & Bass label released her first EP, Disappear, featuring a mix of goth and rave influences whipped into a style she calls “haunted house.” Since then she has unleashed more tracks for the label, including "Cry Baby," her White Gloves EP, and her forthcoming The Night EP (October/November 2011). She has also released remixes for Michna, Creep, Hussle Club, Hanuman, Riviera, Lil’ Tal, and Funerals, as well as several goth/industrial mixes (in conjunction with Psychic TV and Death in June, respectively) for Brooklyn clothing company Mishka NYC, whom she's sponsored by. Star Eyes vocals also appear on tracks by John B (Beta Recordings) and Passions (Kitsuné), and she is the former editor-in-chief of the music magazine XLR8R.
Though now splitting her time between Miami and Brooklyn, XLR8R’s “artist to watch” Jubilee will always be Brooklyn’s bass sweetheart. Known for her rambunctious combination of upfront bass music, UK house, and tropical flavors, she has become a surefire remedy for ailing dancefloors around the globe. Co-opting her name from the X-Men character who shot fireworks out of her hands, Jubilee works similar magic when she steps into the DJ booth. But she’s also simply Jess, the one-time South Florida raver who grew up obsessively listening to Miami bass on the radio and dancing the night away at underground breaks parties. After making the move to NYC, she quickly infiltrated the DJ circuit and began turning heads with her knowledge of all things bass. It’s the sweet mix of underground bass and tropical vibes that brings Jubilee from clubs and warehouse parties to the comfort of your own home. Her radio show Fireworks, on both Brooklyn Radio and Electric Soundstage (iHeartRadio’s new electronic station), continuously features fellow global producers such as Sinden, Bok Bok, Mike Q, and Star Eyes. Prior to Fireworks, she has DJed on East Village Radio and put together well received guest mixes for “The Mix Up” on Australia’s Triple J Radio and XLR8R Magazine’s esteemed podcast series. You can also find Jubilee on the production end of things as one half of Bassanovva, a project with Canadian producer Grahmzilla (previously of Thunderheist). The duo’s debut EP, Chicken Lover, dropped this past November on Sinden’s Grizzly label. Be sure to also check out her Paypur EP with Udachi for the Nightshifters label, an imprint she runs with Jason Forrest (a.k.a. Dj Donna Summer). These days we have also seen official Jubilee remixes for some of the most buzzed about artists- Cubic Zirconia (with Proper Villians), Canblaster, and Creep (with Star Eyes). As if that’s not enough, Jubilee also puts on the infamous Flashing Lights party (with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres); named Best New Party at the Paper Magazine 2010 Nightlife Awards. Critical recognition is no stranger to Jess- in 2009, Sasha Frere-Jones invited her to perform at the New Yorker Festival—she was the only DJ on the bill. Jubilee regularly DJs throughout the US and Europe, and you will be sure to see a lot more of her bass-loaded fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic.

Known as Star Eyes, Vivian Host has been a DJ for over 15 years. After moving from California five years ago she joined up with like-minded DJs to form Brooklyn's Trouble & Bass crew. Fans and practitioners of the D.I.Y. aesthetic, she and Trouble & Bass work to keep some of the rave chaos in New York City's nightlife.
