Ryan “Pony” Stasik shares the unique ways his successful 25-year-old band, Umphrey's McGee, creates an intimate connection with the audience– from the type of music performed to “first-class opportunities” to catch a private concert backstage or letting the fans give input for controlling the experience live. His Pittsburgh roots run deep despite moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan at the tender age 12, as Appetite for Destruction, the debut studio album by American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, hit the shelves. Ryan began playing piano at 5, and learned guitar shortly thereafter. After meeting Brendan Bayliss,  an American musician and the founder, a lead guitarist, and primary vocalist for progressive rock band Umphrey's McGee. Ryan offered to switch to bass since the band had no one holding down the bottom end. Even from the beginning, he was a team player. Against all odds, this plan worked out. Equal parts trained pianist and self-taught rocker, Ryan Stasik the bassist, is a confluence of musical forces. As a student at the University of Notre Dame, he co-founded Umphrey's McGee, known as much for their irreverent stage presence as their complex musicality. Ryan is truly a musician knowing no boundaries. As the toe-tapping backbeat of Umphrey's legendary live shows, Stasik pulls inspiration from anybody and anything that gets hips ‘a swaying.  Though devoted to studying the likes of Dan Kurtz, Nick Blasky, and Mike Bendy, Ryan leaves plenty of room for Hall & Oates, Iron Maiden, and Sade. Abstract: In computational neuroscience, hypotheses are often formulated as bottom-up mechanistic models of the systems in question, consisting of differential equations that can be numerically integrated forward in time. Candidate models can then be validated by comparison against experimental data. The model outputs of neural network models depend on both neuron parameters, connectivity parameters and other model inputs. Successful model fitting requires sufficient exploration of the model parameter space, which can be computationally demanding. Additionally, identifying degeneracy in the parameters, i.e. different combinations of parameter values that produce similar outputs, is of interest, as they define the subset of models consistent with the data. In this computational study, we apply metamodels to a two-population recurrent spiking network of point-neurons, the so-called Brunel network. Metamodels are data-driven approximations to more complex models with more desirable computational properties, which can be run considerably faster than the original model. Specifically, we apply two different metamodelling techniques, Hierarchical Cluster-based Partial Least Squares regression and deep Gaussian process regression, to estimate the power spectra of the population spiking activities and the local field potential. We find that the metamodels are able to accurately model the power spectra in the asynchronous irregular regime. Using the Gaussian process metamodel, we invert the model, and estimate the probability distributions over parameters that can give rise to observed simulation outputs. We find that these distributions correctly identify parameter combinations that give similar model outputs, and that the parameters are constrained to different degrees by observing the two different signals. Louis Bayard: In the words of the New York Times, Louis Bayard “reinvigorates historical fiction,” rendering the past “as if he'd witnessed it firsthand.” His acclaimed novels include The Pale Blue Eye, soon to be a Netflix motion picture starring Christian Bale, the national bestseller Courting Mr. Lincoln, Roosevelt's Beast, The School of Night, The Black Tower, and Mr. Timothy, as well as the highly praised young-adult novel, Lucky Strikes. Ryan Stasik, November 13th, 1976, came into this world bleeding black & gold. His Pittsburgh roots run deep despite moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan at the tender age 12 as Appetite for Destruction hit the shelves. Ryan began playing piano at 5, learned guitar shortly thereafter, and after meeting Bayliss offered to switch to bass since the band had no one holding down the bottom end. Even from the beginning, he was a team player. Against all odds, this plan worked out. Equal parts trained pianist and self-taught rocker, Ryan Stasik the bassist is a confluence of musical forces. As a student at the University of Notre Dame, he co-founded Umphrey's McGee, known as much for their irreverent stage presence as their complex musicality. Ryan is truly a musician knowing no boundaries. As the toe-tapping backbeat of Umphrey's legendary live shows, Stasik pulls inspiration from anybody and anything that get hips ‘a swaying. Though devoted to studying the likes of Dan Kurtz, Nick Blasky, and Mike Bendy, Ryan leaves plenty of room for Hall & Oates, Iron Maiden, and Sade. In the end, if it takes to a Budweiser and a good laugh, it's welcome in the web of rhythm Ryan calls his repertoire. Abstract: Hippocampal sharp wave ripples (SPW-R) have been identified as key bio-markers of important brain functions such as memory consolidation and decision making. SPW-R detection typically relies on hand-crafted feature extraction, and laborious manual curation is often required. In this multidisciplinary study, we propose a novel, self-improving artificial intelligence (AI) method in the form of deep Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) with Long Short-Term memory (LSTM) layers that can learn features of SPW-R events from raw, labeled input data. The algorithm is trained using supervised learning on hand-curated data sets with SPW-R events. The input to the algorithm is the local field potential (LFP), the low- frequency part of extracellularly recorded electric potentials from the CA1 region of the hippocampus. The output prediction can be interpreted as the time-varying probability of SPW-R events for the duration of the input. A simple thresholding applied to the output probabilities is found to identify times of events with high precision. The reference implementation of the algorithm, named 'RippleNet', is open source, freely available, and implemented using a common open-source framework for neural networks (tensorflow.keras) and can be easily incorporated into existing data analysis workflows for processing experimental data. Abstract: Experimental studies in neuroscience are producing data at a rapidly increasing rate, providing exciting opportunities and formidable challenges to existing theoretical and modeling approaches. To turn massive datasets into predictive quantitative frameworks, the field needs software solutions for systematic integration of data into realistic, multiscale models. Here we describe the Brain Modeling ToolKit (BMTK), a software suite for building models and performing simulations at multiple levels of resolution, from biophysically detailed multi-compartmental, to point-neuron, to population-statistical approaches. Leveraging the SONATA file format and existing software such as NEURON, NEST, and others, BMTK offers consistent user experience across multiple levels of resolution. It permits highly sophisticated simulations to be set up with little coding required, thus lowering entry barriers to new users. We illustrate successful applications of BMTK to large-scale simulations of a cortical area. Joanna Jurewicz to lingwistka kognitywna i tłumaczka z sanskrytu i angielskiego (Katedra Azji Południowej Wydziału Orientalistycznego UW). W centrum jej zainteresowań leży filozoficzna myśl hinduska wyrażana w najstarszych indyjskich zabytkach literackich. Szczególnie interesują ją początki myślenia abstrakcyjnego, a także dziedziczenie pojęć i obrazów w trakcie kulturowego przekazu. Wiceprezeska Polskiego Towarzystwa Semiotycznego, członkini Academia Europaea. Dr Michał Panasiuk to indolog-bengalista. Absolwent i pracownik warszawskiej indologii (Katedra Azji Południowej na Wydziale Orientalistycznym UW). Badacz historii i kultury Bengalu. Tłumacz literatury polskiej na bengalski. Autor przekładu m.in. poezji Wisławy Szymborskiej na język Rabindranatha Tagore’a. Spotkanie odbyło się w ramach cyklu organizowanego przez Doktoranckie Koło Naukowe "Orientuj się!" we współpracy z Muzeum Azji i Pacyfiku oraz Laboratorium badań nad przekładem WO UW. The band has an EXTREMELY dedicated hardcore fan base. Band bassist Ryan Stasik joins the pod to discuss all things Umph, including his hate for the band's name, and how it came to be. Stasik details how the band practices, how it trusts each other on stage and how no one is allowed to say "no."

Bienvenidos a la segunda temporada de Perdón por el Retraso! Tenemos muchas novedades este año, y la primera de ellas es que el programa POR FIN se oye bien! Comenzamos con el Mongodiario, orgullo de nuestra redacción y vergüenza de nuestros conocidos. A continuación comentamos unas noticias de bodas y hablamos sobre chorradicas varias, como nombres de atletas búlgaras, que nos hacen reír como tontorrones, que es lo que somos… Hacemos un análisis exhaustivo a unas llamadas que le hizo a Carles una señora que descubrió que su marido le ponía los cuernos y… bueno, fue un despropósito que mejor que escuchen… Pa mear y no echar gota. Estrenamos concurso: "Vago, Medalla o Camisa de Rayas" donde nuestros concursantes deberán adivinar si una persona es un concursante de Gran Hermano, un premio Príncipe de Asturias, o un imputado en la trama Gürtel. Próximamente en su juguetería más cercana tendrán la versión de juego de mesa. Para finalizar en la Discoteca Insensata escuchamos "Cómo canta la gallina" de La Camboria y una canción dedicada a nuestra infanta favorita. Con la participación de Manu Ansemil, Alberto Hernandez, Sergi Llorens y Carles Herrera, además del cameo habitual de Stasik, dando su adolescente opinión de lo que se le pregunta. Han pasado un buen verano? Nos encanta que les encante nuestro programa. Perdón por el Retraso.

En el momento de las votaciones ya somos más faltones. La diversión convierte en estupor al comprobar que Europa ha votado masivamente a una tía con barba. ¿O es un tío con un vestido? Pero el resultado es abrumador y lo aceptamos deportivamente. Al final se hace muy pesado y si éramos pocos parió la abuela: Stasik, como en cada programa aparece y cuenta dos chistes. No cuenta el del perro Mistetas, bastante apropiado esta noche sobretodo con las de Polonia.
