This week John is back for an unscripted and unedited episode to speak to you directly about a topic that's been on his mind lately - homeownership. There are a lot of opinions out there about whether it's better to buy or rent a home, but John wanted to share his personal experiences and thoughts on the matter. He used to be a big believer in the idea that owning a home was the key to financial success and stability. But as he's gotten older and owned multiple properties, John realized that it's not always as simple as that. There are a lot of hidden costs associated with owning a home - from property taxes to maintenance fees to mortgage interest. And if you don't plan on staying in one place for a long time, it can be even more difficult to recoup those costs and make a profit when you eventually sell. That's not to say that owning a home is always a bad investment - it can certainly appreciate in value over time and provide a sense of stability and security. But it's important to do the math and consider all of the factors before making such a big financial decision. At the end of the day, everyone's situation is different and what works for one person may not work for another. John's inspiration for sharing his experiences is to encourage others to think critically about their own housing choices and make the decision that's best for them. By unpacking the world of celebrity endorsements and investments, Oliver emphasizes the importance of focusing on the quality of the product and the team behind it, rather than relying solely on celebrity star power for products that may just be a trend. He advises fellow celebrities to stay in their lane and not micromanage the companies they work with saying, “In my eyes…a celebrity will influence you to try something once. The product is what's going to make you go back.” In addition to discussing the many aspects of his investment portfolio, Oliver and John also discuss the concept of advisory shares in private companies while sharing their insights on a selective approach to joining such boards. The duo are joined by friend of the pod Bob Menery near the end of their chat to discuss their shared love for Boston, some of Oliver's upcoming acting roles, and to reflect on some of the bigger investment opportunities he just missed out on. Our guest today needs no introduction. John's nostalgic vibes were turned up to eleven as he was joined by one-half of the legendary rap duo Kid n' Play, the one and only Christopher “KID” Reid. From their beloved albums 2 Hype, Funhouse, and Face The Nation, to their classic films like House Party and Class Act, Kid n' Play paved the way for cross-over hip hop stars like Nas, Ja Rule, and Eminem to diversify their talents and break into the Hollywood mainstream. Despite the fact that KID has cut his iconic flat top fade, he is no less recognizable for his humor, love of the hip hop community, and passion for the art form. This year as hip hop celebrates 50 years of changing and challenging the culture, John and KID dive into the roots of Kid n' Play's music and their pioneering moves into movies, television, and animation. KID addresses some of the criticism that was thrown at the duo during the height of their success while pointing out how diversifying revenue streams and adjusting to shifts in style is now simply accepted as the norm in pop, hip hop, and rock. This hour serves as both a hip hop history lesson and an inside look at how two friends from New York changed America's perception of hip hop and rap culture while operating on their own terms. Recently performing at the 2023 BET Music Awards in June of this year, the duo proved that they still have what it takes to get a party started and have no plans of slowing down anytime soon. This week John shares his hosting duties with friend of the pod Bob Menery, sitting down with the one and only Jamie Kennedy for a freewheeling roundtable about LA real estate, the realities of showbiz finances, and the state of social media. Jamie is best known for his wildly popular TV show The Jamie Kennedy Experiment and his role in the iconic Scream franchise. In addition to being a podcaster and producer through his production company, Wannabe Producers, Jamie continues to tour doing stand-up at clubs and venues around the world. Celebrity culture is full of shallow personalities and zero talent hacks, but over the years Jamie has proven time and again to be the real deal. His belief in his talents landed him major stardom in the early 2000's and he has never stopped working in the entertainment industry. In this super sized show Bob and John get the full Jamie Kennedy experience as they shoot the shit about everything from the stupidity of dating apps, Bob's mysterious Saudi investments, Jamie's concerns over censorship, and why trusting banks with all your money might not be the best idea these days. This is a must listen episode for anyone who is a fan of Jamie's unique brand of comedy, social commentary, and classic pranks. The enduring relevance of his work is even judged by John's 15 year old son who has recently (thanks to Youtube) become a huge fan of The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, proving the debt that today's TikTok wannabes and “internet comics” owe to an OG of sketch/prank format! Every entrepreneur who sets out to start their own venture has dreams about disrupting their chosen space and building their business into a thriving force to be reckoned with. The fact remains that very few entrepreneurs are up to facing the challenges of getting knocked down only to have the guts and determination to get back up again. This week's guest is the kind of warrior-founder who has tapped into that inner strength of a champion and is determined to make his mark on the streaming wars and influencer space of modern media, no matter what comes his way! Madison Clavon is the CEO of Fightstars Network, a revolutionary platform that provides fighters, promotion companies, and talent in the business of combat sports a way to monetize themselves through a unique marketplace of influencers and sponsorships. After learning the ropes of production during a behind the scenes role as a gaffer and production assistant in Hollywood, Madison hit his plateau in that business and took the risk of leaving everything to create something he was truly passionate about. Fightstars began leading the way in developing combat sports content and acquiring other shows to build out the network. Inspired by their early success, Madison moved everything to the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, to open up a media center gym where fighters can train, create content, and focus on recovery. Everything was going well until tragically his mentor and business partner took his own life. Filled with grief and determined more than ever to make the business work, Madison picked himself up off the mat and completely re-branded and re-imagined Fightstars, taking on investment and expertise from outside companies and expanding their vision to help fighters gain the exposure and monetization to take their careers to the next level. This week John welcomes Billy McFarland to the show for a first hand look inside his disastrous and ultimately criminal co-founding of the notorious Fyre Festival. In 2016, Billy alongside his business partner Ja Rule hatched a plan for a "luxury" music festival that promised 5-Star accommodations, celebrity encounters, and gourmet dining. Some ticket holders paid upwards of $100,000 dollars per ticket for the promise of a celebrity and champagne soaked weekend in the Bahamas to find the only thing that was soaked was their ramshackled tents and soggy cheese sandwiches. The event was scheduled to take place in April and May 2017, but was aborted after attendees had arrived due to problems with security, food, logistics, understaffing, accommodations, and talent relations. In May 2017, McFarland and Ja Rule were sued for $100 million dollars in a class action lawsuit on behalf of Fyre Festival attendees. The following month, McFarland was arrested and charged with wire fraud in Manhattan Federal Court for his role in the organization of the festival. After pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud in March 2018, he was sentenced to six years in a federal prison. He was released in late March 2022, after serving over four years. In this episode Billy and John sit down to explore the truth behind what exactly went wrong. Billy is transparent about how he allowed both his ego and his entrepreneurial drive to spiral out of control forcing him to lie to investors, friends, vendors, and finally himself. John and Billy talk about the legacy that his mistakes have left and how time spent in prison forced him to reflect on his actions, his character, and his plans for the future. In addition to discussing relationship building and leadership, Blaine and John reflect upon shared business experiences and why the tunnel vision of shareholder supremacy can be an achilles heel for leaders. Blaine is fond of saying “the primary focus of what I do is built upon a foundation that focuses on returning to or regaining the soul of your business – that esprit that gives what you do meaning and vitality and connects to everything your business touches.” This focus on your business's unique aspects along with the curation of relationships and focusing on internal relationships while avoiding the dangers of singular growth is an organizing principle in this conversation. Ryan “Pony” Stasik shares the unique ways his successful 25-year-old band, Umphrey's McGee, creates an intimate connection with the audience– from the type of music performed to “first-class opportunities” to catch a private concert backstage or letting the fans give input for controlling the experience live. Ryan also explains why the band chose to have their own record label and other strategies for business success, including dealing with the challenges of Covid that was “a huge asterisk for the music industry.” Topics include: How John a “football jock” and Ryan “a very smart student” met at Notre Dame and how their paths crossed years later, both successful in their unique ways from following their passions. Ryan's part in the Chicago-based jam band, Umphrey's McGee, which started with a homegrown audience built from music presented in innovative ways. In 2022, the latest album, Asking For A Friend, continued to surprise fans: https://dcmusicreview.com/asking-for-a-friend-talking-about-umphreys-mcgees-new-album-with-joel-cummins/ The impact of words, which can be a driving force. Ryan has been playing with Brendan Bayliss (who was told by his music teacher in college that he had little chance of making it in the music industry) for more than 30 years. The fork in the road, when Ryan knew he was going to make it after a rough few years. He shares, too, how he was the opening act for Dave Matthews Band (and how down-to-earth Dave Matthews is). A “weekend warrior” approach of priorities as a husband with two kids, the strategy for hitting the financial numbers, and the special ways the band members communicate. Some bands, like The Rolling Stones, make more money on merchandise than performing. About Ryan Stasik Ryan Stasik, November 13th, 1976, came into this world bleeding black & gold. His Pittsburgh roots run deep despite moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan at the tender age 12, as Appetite for Destruction, the debut studio album by American hard rock band Guns N' Roses, hit the shelves. Ryan began playing piano at 5, and learned guitar shortly thereafter. After meeting Brendan Bayliss, an American musician and the founder, a lead guitarist, and primary vocalist for progressive rock band Umphrey's McGee. Ryan offered to switch to bass since the band had no one holding down the bottom end. Even from the beginning, he was a team player. Against all odds, this plan worked out. Equal parts trained pianist and self-taught rocker, Ryan Stasik the bassist, is a confluence of musical forces. As a student at the University of Notre Dame, he co-founded Umphrey's McGee, known as much for their irreverent stage presence as their complex musicality. Ryan is truly a musician knowing no boundaries. As the toe-tapping backbeat of Umphrey's legendary live shows, Stasik pulls inspiration from anybody and anything that gets hips ‘a swaying. Though devoted to studying the likes of Dan Kurtz, Nick Blasky, and Mike Bendy, Ryan leaves plenty of room for Hall & Oates, Iron Maiden, and Sade. In the end, if it takes to a Budweiser and a good laugh, it's welcome in the web of rhythm Ryan calls his repertoire. It was here that he realized that social media was too important to overlook during the hiring process. It bothered him that almost every company “snoops” on candidates' social media behind the scenes. TJ became determined to bring social media screening “above table” by including employees in the process in hopes of making social media background checks as compliant and commonplace as criminal background checks and credit checks. After months of searching for a compliant solution that gets users' consent and protects both employees and employers alike, he couldn't find anything. That's when TJ saw that a huge problem existed that needed a solution. That's when LifeBrand was born. TJ is a self-proclaimed entrepreneur and business nerd, fascinated by the process of starting something small and growing it into something special. Outside of work, he loves spending time with his family (especially his two daughters), woodworking, golfing, watching all Philadelphia Sports Teams, and enjoying good food and fine spirits. Effortlessly blending natural folk sensibility, pop hooks, and honest rock, McDermott's music is as much for the outcast as the congregation. It's an exploration of the dark corners of life's journey and it resonates middle class truths through the passionate filter of a kid that grew up on Chicago's Irish South Side. If you are a fan of Springsteen, Van Morrison, John Steinbeck, Patti Smith then McDermott's inspirational rock is in your wheelhouse, waiting late-night with a guitar, spare smokes and stories of the American heart. “McDermott's music helped me to find a part of myself that wasn't lost, as I had feared, but only misplaced.
