Novelist Louis Bayard's new book The Wildes: A Novel in Five Acts, depicts the fateful weekend in 1892 that spawned not only the comedy of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest but the tragic downfall of Oscar's family. Bayard reveals how he walked that tonal line; how he's been in touch with Wilde's still-living grandson; how he combined the historical romance of Courting Mr. Lincoln with the suspense and intrigue of The Pale Blue Eye; how it's easier to depict famous characters through the eyes of their contemporaries; and how Constance Wilde finally glimpsed the flamboyant public persona of her otherwise devoted husband and father. Famed American author Edgar Allan Poe, who lived from 1809 to 1849, was a poet, literary critic, short story writer and creator of the modern horror tale. He experienced great tragedy in his life and was notorious for his drinking and dark temperament, which frequently got him into trouble. Poe spent time in the Charleston Lowcountry while serving in the U.S. Army (under an assumed name) he at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island from 1827 to 1828. As Poe's 214th birthday approaches on Jan 19, 2023, his enduring popularity in American popular culture only continues to grow. Netflix recently released The Pale Blue Eye (the title comes from Poe's short story The Tell-Tale Heart). The historical thriller, based on a 2006 novel by Louis Bayard, is set at West Point, where Poe was a cadet before he was court-martialed in 1831. In this fictionalized film, Poe is enlisted by a detective (played by Christian Bale) to help solve a series of grisly murders. In this podcast episode, Scott Peeples, a Poe scholar, English professor and interim chair of the Department of English, takes us on a tour of some of the Lowcountry landmarks associated with Poe. Featured on this EpisodeDuring his 26 years at the College of Charleston, Scott Peeples, English professor and interim chair of the English Department, has taught a wide array of courses on topics ranging from Gothicism to nineteenth-century American poetry to Bob Dylan. He has published extensively on Edgar Allan Poe and other nineteenth-century writers, most recently as author of The Man of the Crowd: Edgar Allan Poe and the City and as co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Edgar Allan Poe. BEHIND THE LENS kicks off year nine with NORA KAYE talking THE COSMOS SISTERS and our exclusive interview with SCOTT COOPER talking THE PALE BLUE EYE! WOW! First up for 2023 and year nine of #BTLRadioShow is our exclusive interview with award-winning writer/director SCOTT COOPER talking about his mesmerizing new film, THE PALE BLUE EYE, now on Netflix. Adapted by Scott from the acclaimed novel of the same name by Louis Bayard, THE PALE BLUE EYE is, at its heart, an Edgar Allan Poe origin story set at West Point in the 1830s. Steeped in metaphor and ambiance thanks to the film's visual tonal bandwidth and exemplary visual grammar courtesy of Cooper's frequent collaborator, cinematographer Masanobu "Masa" Takayanagi, Scott and I dig deep into discussion covering the film's visual tonal progression and framing, use of color, and Stefania Cella's production design which is an integral part of the film's metaphoric style. Then joining us live for the second half of the show is writer/director/actor NORA KAYE talking about her new film THE COSMOS SISTERS. Written and directed by Nora Kaye and Whitney Uland, THE COSMOS SISTERS is a fun-filled lo budget/no budget/micro-budget indie romp about two high school BFF's and bandmates who drift apart only to come together again ten years later trying to reunite and reconnect. As you listen to Nora, you'll quickly discover that comedy, fun, and sticktoitiveness are in her nature, something that shines through within the film as Nora and Whitney star as "Nora" and "Whitney". http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Elisabeth Egan, an editor at the Book Review, curates our Group Text column — a monthly choice of a book that she feels is particularly well suited to book clubs and their discussions. On this week's podcast, she talks about her latest pick: “Jackie & Me,” by Louis Bayard, which imagines the friendship between Jacqueline Bouvier and Lem Billings, a close friend of the Kennedys.“This is rooted in reality,” Egan says, “but Bayard runs with it and imagines conversations between Lem and Jackie, and just shows this, on one hand, fabulous life of parties and museums and fun they had together, but also sets up this ticking clock where you come to understand what Jackie really has at stake, and has to lose by committing to this life with the Kennedys.”Matthew Schneier visits the podcast to discuss Paula Byrne's new biography, “The Adventures of Miss Barbara Pym.” Pym, a British writer, began publishing novels in the 1950s.“She published six novels in pretty quick succession, and they're great,” Schneier says of the first decade or so of her career. “Very clever, very witty, she was often compared to Jane Austen — which was a writer that she loved and appreciated, but also a kind of very easy comparison, whereas Pym's ironies can be a little bit darker than some of Austen's. And there's a sense in her work that she is spotlighting characters who are not the Emma Woodhouses, who are beautiful and rich and effervescent. They're what she ended up calling ‘excellent women,' which is the title of I think her best starter novel. These women who are well brought up and very proper, a little bit pious, but can also be a little dowdy, a little dreary, a little bit easier to overlook.”Also on this week's episode, Alexandra Alter talks about the filmmaker Werner Herzog and his first novel, “The Twilight World”; and Jennifer Szalai and Molly Young talk about books they've recently reviewed. John Williams is the host. Here are the books discussed by The Times's critics this week:“The Facemaker” by Lindsey Fitzharris“Meet Me by the Fountain” by Alexandra Lange

Louis Bayard's new novel Jackie & Me tells the story of the courtship of Congressman John F. Kennedy and Jackie Bouvier from the point of view of Kennedy's oldest friend, a closeted gay man named Lem Billings. It's a charming and moving imagining of how these events played out that takes us inside the heads and hearts of these real people, and Lou discusses how writing about recent Presidential romance is different from writing about 19th-century Presidential romances; how he embraces the multiverse (and who actually invented it); the fun of Googling while reading; a fascination with closeted love; some great jacket copy; how the types of mysteries he writes about has changed; and an irreverent yet perfect celebration of Pride Month. Terence Hawkins' His latest book, The Rage of Achilles, is an extensively revised and re-imagined edition of his first novel. In it, Homer's epic heroes are no more glorious than the tired, scared grunts they command. Informed by Julian Jaynes' theory of the bicameral mind, its gods are only the hallucinations of men and women desperate for direction in the collapsing society of the late Bronze Age. Hawkins' realistic account of Homeric warfare has been described as “visceral,” and his prose “elegant and terse.” In a Best Book of 2020 review, Kirkus called Hawkins' short story collection Turing's Graveyard "extraordinary stories that will make readers laugh, shiver, or perhaps both." Booklist described it as "a beautiful reading experience” and compared it to the Twilight Zone. In naming his second novel, American Neolithic, a Year's Best, Kirkus described it as "a towering work of speculative fiction." Its revised edition was compared to Orwell's 1984 in Midwest Book Review. Hawkins was the founding Director of the Yale Writers' Conference, which he managed and developed from 2011 to 2015. In 2014, he started the Company of Writers, offering workshops and manuscript services to writers at all levels of experience. The Company has hosted seminars with Amy Bloom and Colum McCann, as well as a program on the intersection of literary and genre fiction with John Crowley and Louis Bayard. Hawkins grew up in a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania. His home county was the site of the original “Night of the Living Dead.” His grandfathers and several uncles were coal miners. He graduated from Yale, where he was publisher of the Yale Daily News. He lives in Connecticut.

Louis Bayard's novel Mr. Timothy, a sort-of sequel to Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol, imagines what happens to Tiny Tim as a grownup. It's a moving literary thriller, with its own sort of redemption and set in and around the Victorian London underworld, and author Bayard discusses the book's origins and creation; how A Christmas Carol is a surprisingly angry book; how he realized that Bob Cratchit is not the most reliable narrator; the ways in which Tiny Tim is a Rorschach test; the desperate need to find your own narrative; the struggle of being seen as a symbol, not a person; the importance of purging and exorcizing your demons; not having a good answer to the question of where this sh1t comes from; identifying at least one Dickens descendant (who you may recognize from Game of Thrones); the importance of keeping multiple plates spinning; the fun of finding the story that's already there; and inside scoop on the upcoming film adaptation of Lou's novel The Pale Blue Eye, starring Christian Bale. Reduced Shakespeare Company Podcast

Gaps in the historical record are treasure troves for playwrights and novelists, and this week we talk to novelist Louis Bayard (Mr. Timothy, Courting Mr. Lincoln) about two of his historical novels, The School of Night and The Pale Blue Eye. Lou discusses how he stumbles into these historical gaps and how he excavates what he does or doesn't find there, and he reveals the pain of eliminating unnecessary characters; the difficulty in finding the heart of your mystery; meditations on both Dupin and Lupin; fan fiction about artists, scientists, and thinkers; the delight of dropping Easter eggs; the rewards of going on Google crawls; finding the balance in his promiscuous mix of fact and fiction; and what's coming next down the Bayard pipeline. Louis Bayard is the author of such novels as Mr. Timothy, Roosevelt’s Beast, and The Pale Blue Eye, the former recapper of Downton Abbey for the New York Times, and the author of the New York Times obituary for William Shakespeare which appeared on the front-page of the April 23rd, 2016 edition, the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. HIs new novel Courting Mr. Lincoln is funny, poignant, and fascinating comedy of manners, and Lou discusses the impulses that led to this writing the novel, influences ranging from private letters to the novels of Jane Austen and Henry James, catching Mary Todd at her best, performing rehabilitative acts, spawning (and creating) clickbait-y articles, the glories and challenges of writing on spec, the fun of digging into primary sources, discovering further eerie and ironic Booth/Lincoln interactions, and the privilege of being the novelist who steps in where the historical record falls silent.
