Trigger warning: domestic violenceToday we are joined by someone who has truly lived a life of challenges, lessons and intriguing turns. From navigating violence in the home as a teenager, to being a woman in the military when they had only just started accepting women back into the technical fields, Stephanie Burns has seen a lot.In 1973, Stephanie became one of the first women trained as an engineer by the U.S. Army Signal Corp. Graduating #1 in her class, she received orders to be trained as a military instructor. After leaving in 1976, she worked in corporate roles before starting her own training company in 1981, with NASA as her first client. Others, such as, ABC-TV and presenting at computer Expos in cities throughout the US followed, focusing on helping adults adapt to the desktop computer revolution. The experience working with adults as students fuelled her intense curiosity about the development of new skills and knowledge, taking advantage of the adult brain and nervous system. This led her to make a complete shift from the tech industry to the fields of human behaviour and adult education. A move to Australia in 1987 led to the development of the Learning to Learn program and many others, presented in corporate, government and education sectors. This program, along with others, and numerous books, have impacted many thousands. In this episode she shares:Her journey to getting into the militaryWhy she became an independent contractorWhat made her realise that adults in school behave like childrenThe challenge of teaching higher ranking adults in the militaryThe influence of Stephanie's father and intense pursuitsThe importance of a supportive communityHow a family change led her mother to abuseWhat happened when her mum thought she was doing drugs and submitted her into a heroin outpatient centreHer journey to find her dad at 15 when she was kicked out of her mum's homeKey Quotes“I thought, she's gonna bloody kill me. Nana Fofie Amina Bashir was trained in the Akom tradition of West Africa and is a multi-modal artist. Nana Fofie shares her ideas around decolonization and restorative integration of ancestral wisdoms. She starts by describing her training in Ghana, Cameroon, and Togo and reminds us that Carl Jung got many of his ideas around dreamwork through his visits with African tribes. We speak about working with dream themes and watching them evolve and about making spirit connections through dreams. After the break we get a call from Jenny from Santa Cruz who asks about shamanic drumming. Nana Fofie agrees that drumming can be another way to connect to the divine. She then speaks about the work of visionary world-building of author Octavia Butler who got many of her ideas in her dreams. We take a second call from Stephanie Burns from New Orleans who is herself a dream professional who asks for tips about how to better dream for other people and for the community. Stephanie also speaks about communicating with ancestors in dreams. Nana Fofie ends by speaking about layers of collective trauma. BIO: Nana Fofie is a spirit and energy worker, a somatic and expressive arts therapist. She is an okomfo opanin, trained in the Akom tradition of West Africa and rooted in New Orleans, Louisiana. Connecting with our ancestors. Our guest Stephanie R. Burns starts by describing her all-inclusive view of ancestors which is far vaster than our biological lineage, including the most ancient ancestor of them all, the Earth. She says that we can choose to communicate only with benevolent ancestors and are also able to heal the less healthy ancestors and not let ourselves be controlled by them. She suggests using the four elements as part of our rituals around working with these dreams and focusing on intentionality and gratitude. She describes what she calls Earth Dreaming which is dreaming for the healing of Mama Earth. Max shares a recent dream of his about a tree and how we act as if everything is not connected. Steve calls from Prunedale to ask how to start making an alliance w a particular grandfather who died when he was ten. Kay calls from Vermont asking if you can you doubt the answers from your ancestors, and Stephanie replies, "Yes! Trust what you know." BIO: Stephanie R Burns, based in New Orleans, is an author, speaker, and master dreamer who uses her multiple degrees to explore ways to create frameworks from ancient wisdom. It's Friday, December 30th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Environmentalists hurting Azerbaijan people On Monday, December 12th, environmental activists in Azerbaijan setup tents blocking the only road connecting Karabakh to the outside world, reports international Christian Concern. Azerbaijan is located at the boundary of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. In addition, they shut down the gas lines for four days which caused schools to temporarily close and the heat to be shut off in homes. Russia launched largest aerial assault on Thursday Residents of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv were urged to head to air raid shelters early on Friday as sirens wailed across the city, a day after Russia carried out the biggest aerial assault since it started the war in February, reports Reuters. In a video address on Thursday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said air commands in central, southern, eastern and western Ukraine repelled 54 Russian missiles and 11 drones. More than 18 residential buildings and 10 critical infrastructure installations were destroyed in the latest attacks. Waves of Russian air strikes in recent months, targeting energy infrastructure, have left millions without power and heating in often freezing temperatures. Epoch Times uncovers voting issues in Houston and Dallas Texas Secretary of State John Scott's office has released the final phase of its 2020 general election audit of Collin, Dallas, Harris, and Tarrant Counties, reports The Epoch Times. The audit released on Monday showed the most serious issues occurred in two Democrat areas, Harris County -- including Houston, followed by Dallas, both of which featured “phantom voters.” By contrast, the two largest Republican-controlled counties, Tarrant County administered a “quality, transparent election” with minor findings, and Collin County “proved to be the model of how to run elections in Texas.” (pdf) Massachusetts mom gets city to fly “nuclear family” flag for a week When it comes to the concept of “inclusivity,” the sexual perversion movement is ruthlessly hypocritical: only their message may be included. But now conservative Christians are pushing back. In early November 2022, Jessica Jacobson – a mother in Fitchburg, Massachusetts – wanted to discuss how to deal with the sexual perversion indoctrination in the schools, reports MassResistance. Jessica noticed that every year the city flies the LHBT rainbow “pride” flag in a city park for a week. She reasoned that it would only be fair that they also fly a “nuclear family” flag, celebrating heterosexuality, for a week. So, Jessica spoke with Fitchburg Mayor Stephen DeNatale. She explained to him that the non-discrimination laws required both sides of an issue to be allowed. She also reminded the mayor that his oath of office requires him to be “impartial” toward the citizens of Fitchburg. There is also the recent 9-0 US Supreme Court decision, Shurtleff v. City of Boston, requiring Boston to be impartial in allowing flags. Thus, the nuclear family flag – celebrating heterosexuality -- should also be allowed to fly for a week in the same location in Fitchburg. Surprisingly, the Mayor was very supportive of the idea. He agreed that if one group in the community was represented, other members of the community should also be represented. It was determined that the nuclear family flag would be raised in the city's Riverfront Park on Dec. 21 and fly there until Dec. 28. To his credit, Mayor DeNatale participated in the nuclear family flag-raising ceremony as you can see in his tweet. Take a moment to thank him by email through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com or by calling 978-829-1801. Not surprisingly, the sexual perversion activists were livid, reports Boston 25 News. Jessica composed a one-page statement entitled, “Equality is what this flag raising is all about.” It describes what support for the nuclear family means, the demands for equal representation, and how churches are encouraged to pray for nuclear families in these troubled times. Psalm 127:3 says, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him.” 6 notables Christians who died in 2022 The Christian Post reports that there were six notable Christians who died in 2022. They include: Ray Bentley, an author, radio broadcaster and pastor, who helped to found the Maranatha Chapel of California, an influential Evangelical megachurch, who died of complications from COVID-19 at age 64. Abune Antonios, the former leader of the Orthodox Church in Eritrea, Africa, died after spending 15 years in detention as a prisoner of conscience for resisting the Eritrean government's interference in church affairs. He was 94. Dede Robertson, the wife of televangelist Pat Robertson, who was involved in the leadership of both Regent University and the Christian Broadcasting Network. She died at age 94. Frederick Buechner (pronounced BEEK-ner) a Presbyterian theologian, public speaker, minister, World War II veteran and author of numerous fiction and nonfiction books, died at the age of 96. Gordon Fee, a theologian, distinguished professor, Bible translator, and bestselling author who was considered an expert on the study of the Holy Spirit, died at age 88. Canadian Pastor Leon Fontaine, who led the multisite Springs Church of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and gained recent attention for his opposition to COVID-19 lockdown orders, died at age 59 following a brief battle with an aggressive form of cancer. Ohio Worldview listener gets Kirk Cameron's kids' book in library And finally, Stephanie Burns, a Worldview listener in Sandusky, Ohio emailed me a praise report earlier this week. She said, “I have had success in requesting Kirk Cameron's new children's book, As You Grow, to be purchased at my local public library. “I will pray for those who are not met with the same reception and kindness to have wisdom to say the right words in those difficult conversations, shining the light of Christ in truth and love, trusting God's Spirit to work through it in some way. “Thank you for The Worldview broadcast!” In Matthew 5:13, Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Watch a CBN interview with Kirk Cameron about how 50 “Drag Queen Story Hour” libraries either rejected Cameron's request to read his book there or ignored it altogether. When threatened with a possible lawsuit, two libraries saw the light. Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, December 30th in the year of our Lord 2022. When I ask caregivers what the one thing they'd like to change is – physical health is at the top of that list for many. That is why I invited Stephanie Burns onto the Show. Stephanie has a degree in Physical and Health Education and runs Burns Fitness. She and her husband have 4 kids, 2 with neurodiverse needs. On top of that, she undertook a program to lose 100 pounds and get fit. So she gets it. Stephanie also talks about the reality of having kids and the effect not being in good health can have on caregiving. She gives ideas on incorporating all this with a busy household and kids with neurodiverse needs. She also gives you a five-point plan to follow and a piece of wise advice on what to say when you are in the trenches and might be hard on yourself. I know she is good at what she does because Tara and I are in her program. And because she has been in the trenches, I wanted her to share her knowledge with you. Show Notes: Have you ever made an unreasonable request? An ask that you were sure was going to get rejected the moment you put it out there? Sure you have, but there's a limit to how many times we're comfortable getting burned. After a while, most of us stop ourselves before the words reach our lips. We think we'll get ridiculed, shut down, ignored. As a result, opportunities and ideas fall by the wayside. As you'll learn in this episode, you can get away with more than you ever thought was possible by being bold and going for the ask, regardless of expectation. Stephanie Burns built her business on what she calls bootscrapping – getting scrappy while bootstrapping, a term and technique that came as a result of making bold unreasonable requests. She teaches us to take that leap. You might be surprised at what can happen. Question Highlights: How did you get started with making unreasonable requests? How do you cope with what comes up when you go to make those requests? How do you learn how to bring value to people? What are some of the obstacles that come up around making big asks? How do you do your research in order to craft your message? How do you craft a powerful ask but also let people off the hook? Sometimes it's hard to ask for help or make “unreasonable requests”, but in business, it's necessary. You have to be courageous enough to know your worth and ask for the things that you want and need. As an entrepreneur, you have to be able to welcome uncomfortable situations. It can lead you to growth and acquiring the knowledge and experiences you need to scale your business. You have to surround yourself with like-minded people and reach out to various networks to figure out what you can get from them and what they can get from you. Business, after all, is all about exchanges, not only wealth but also value. In this episode, Stephanie Burns shares her experiences and how she used the concept of “unreasonable requests” to grow her business and skillset. She will also discuss the struggles she had to overcome to achieve success. Stephanie also talks about the mistakes entrepreneurs often make in starting a business. Join us and learn more about the art of unreasonable requests and how you can use it for your business. About Stephanie Stephanie Burns is the founder of Chic CEO. It is an online resource providing information, tools, and community for new female entrepreneurs. She is a contributor to Forbes and has a background in media buying, brand building, strategy and entrepreneurship. Stephanie is also a keynote speaker in events that support female entrepreneurs. Growing Your Business Through "Unreasonable Requests" Stephanie's Beginnings Stephanie initially dreamed of being an opera singer and later changed her mind. She then obtained a degree in advertising. She first worked in the marketing team of a casino and later in Bulldog Drummond, an innovation consultancy in San Diego. Around 2008, most of her friends got laid off and came to her for advice on starting a business. This moment led her to research the fast-growing market of female entrepreneurship. She won in the television program Wheel of Fortune. It helped her build her website, Chic CEO. Within six months of launching, Chic CEO gained a following and was named one of the top 10 entrepreneur websites for women by Forbes. Struggles Stephanie Had to Overcome Since her business does not have outside investment, getting capital is an issue she had to face. They have a vast following even if they did not spend money on marketing. Nonetheless, Stephanie knew that money could help them grow much faster. Due to this struggle, she became an expert negotiator to adapt to their business lack of money. Using the Magic of “Unreasonable Requests” to Your Advantage She had to find a way to get the result she wanted with the tools she had. As an entrepreneur, you have to overcome uncomfortable situations. Be courageous to get the things that you want and need—use unreasonable requests. Using the magic of unreasonable requests, she was able to purchase, learn, and experience new things and knowledge. The process of unreasonable requests is reciprocity. You have to offer value in exchange for the request. There are two types of income. First is physical income, which is money. The other is psychic income, which is a nonmonetary reward like providing a network and contacts benefitting your company. The Mistakes Entrepreneurs Are Making Entrepreneurs are easily freaked out by their mistakes or doing the wrong thing. In business, there is no wrong step. There is only the next thing that informs you of the next move. You have to be courageous, move, and take action. Not getting started comes from a place of fear. Stephanie talked about the concept of The 18-40-60 rule. Listen to the full episode to get what it means and how you can use this type of mindset! The Best Advice She Received Howard Leonhard, an investor in Silicon Beach in LA, told her that a CEO only has two jobs: delegate, and not to delegate the delegating. As an entrepreneur, you have to hone your skills and recognize the strengths and weaknesses of your team. Then, build your business around it. On Overcoming Her Struggles and Becoming Successful It's essential to recognize the things that are holding you back to combat the mindset you have. For Stephanie, the feeling of not being worthy is the thing that held her back. Through the help of her fiance and friends, she overcame her lack of self-worth. You can practice arguing with yourself to clear your mindset. Things That Keep Stephanie Excited for the Future Stephanie is launching her new podcast for entrepreneurs called “The Top 3 For Entrepreneurs.” She is also working on the Chic Elite Program that offers business coaching and advice for financially unequipped entrepreneurs. Chris Nichols is the President and Executive Director of The Medicine Horse Project, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue of abused, abandoned, neglected, or displaced horses. She is certified in horse inspired growth healing and facilitates programs for veterans, women's empowerment, and at risk youth with her method of discovering resiliency through horsemanship. Chris also offers horsemanship workshops and clinics helping equestrians develop deeper connection and partnership with their horses. In this episode, Chris and I discuss: How humans and horses work together to learn and heal one another in a safe space. Dealing with and moving past fear through acknowledgement, vulnerability and building a network of support. Women’s empowerment and education through horsemanship activities to build trust, confidence, leadership and personal strength. Fear now as opposed to an anticipated fear. Meeting basic needs of both humans and horses: safety, nourishment, play and sex/ intimacy. Key Takeaways: Chris’s favorite self care practice being with the horses and getting to spend undemanding time with them. To spend time in their world and become a part of the herd. Chris’s advice for women is to make yourself a priority. To live and plan your life for you. If you don’t take care of yourself you can’t be your best self for you or anyone else. Have the courage to step back – it’s critical for your own self health. Follow 1 WIG (Wildly Important Goal) You can’t do 10 things well – do one in a wildly important way. Chris’s advice to develop their own personal power and courage comes to the basic 4 needs of humans and animals. Safety, nourishment, play and sex/intimacy. Defining what makes you safe and what actions you are taking to fulfill those things to build confidence, power and to chase your passion so all aspects of your life are fulfilling. Today's episode is a solo round featuring this essay I wrote about Heroism: Be Your Own Hero Have we lost sight of what it means to be a hero in the modern age? Do we even need heroes anymore? The native american culture portrayed in the book 'Black Elk Speaks' was heavily focused on bravery. We are as removed from that culture as from the culture of chivalry that the knights of the round table were known for. What we do have instead an inventive spirit and the belief that we can become what we set out to become (Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!) Heroes are now innovators, entertainers, teachers, creators, and healers among others. Because we as modern humans have climbed to the top Maslov’s hierarchy of needs, our battle is no longer physical, but rather who we can be for ourselves and others. We have the opportunity re-invent the definition of the hero for the modern human. The experience of becoming a hero is the essence of our humanity. Joseph Campbell saw that the same mythological tales are found in every culture - the story of an adventurer who answers the call to a great challenge, faces down his demons and comes back to society as a changed individual. So, how can you be a hero? *** Find your Cause The hero is called into action for many reasons - to defend their country, to save his family, to provide some service to a group of people. The greatest athletes have been found to be driven by a belief in something greater - it is usually either god or their own abilities. Stephanie Burns of ChicCEO once told me in an interview about ‘Unreasonable Requests' that she found it easy to ask for huge things such as $10,000 of free event space when she was doing it in service of her favorite charity. My own cause that allows me to put for a great effort is to enable people to unlock their fullest human potential by changing the story about themselves (Hero-ification), so that they may contribute to the world in a way that fulfills them and gives them purpose. Determine your Noble Principles Ben Franklin was known for his 10 virtues which he attempted to embody every day. He would track this by putting an X each night next to the ones he was able to fulfill for the day. While many religions give us a series of commandments or qualities to live up to, it is up to us to come up with our own virtues and code of conduct based on what is most important to us. What do you admire in other people? How do you want to feel? What way of being would make you proud of yourself? These are some questions to guide you in making your list. As an example, I have declared the theme for 2016 as ‘the year of living boldly’, so in addition to my other values, I will filter action through the lens “is this action big and bold enough?" Take Courageous Action What are you not satisfied with in your life? What problems do you see in the world? What do people need from you? What do you find yourself thinking about over and over? You Epic Adventure will keep calling and calling, and it is up to you to answer the call and embark on your quest. Heroes are know for their actions and feats, which are impossible to achieve without taking the first step. In the middle of your journey, you will face challenge that is much greater than you anticipated (10 times harder, according to my calculations) and will take all your effort or concentration. In addition, it takes courage to start a new quest, especially when one has little or no experience. Bravery in the face of the unknown defines the hero. Paolo Coelho tells us that making decisions is our god given right as humans and we must embrace this power. Taking action is heroic because by saying yes you are also closing the door on other options because you believe you are fighting the good fight. In my own quest to go to all 50 US states before I turned 30 or become a professional cyclist, I was saying no to regular weekends at the lake with friends.

What if you had the ability to make big things magically happen? What if you could make people's (including your own) wildest dreams come true? My guest today on the Art of Adventure has a secret process for learning how to ask from something and get a YES, when you would normally expect to get a NO - AKA the Unreasonable Request. Stehpanie Burns is the founder and CEO of Chic CEO. She has been a speaker at SXSW, TEDx, SD Entrepreneur Summit, Female Entrepreneur: The Gender Advantage... and more. Some of her big unreasonable requests wins are free or heavily discounted venue space for her favorite charity and an all expenses paid Ruby on Rails coding course and vacation in Bali. Stephanie has coached me in making unreasonable requests as well: Some of the things that I have gotten in the last few months as a result of using the unreasonable requests process are: a free scenic train tour of New Zealand, free concert tickets, a party thrown for my birthday for my favorite local charity, a week-long luxury retreat, and free mentorship, to name a few. I think you will find this a fascinating look at our own beliefs, and how we can harness the power of continual challenge. This is the episode for you if you have wild dreams and want to turn them into reality, or if there is anything you really want that could help your life or business, but you aren't sure how you can make it happen. A mid westerner at heart, Stephanie landed in San Diego after college when a friend convinced her that it was the place to be. Having never been to California this may seem like a bold move, but for Stephanie it was exactly where she needed to be. After gaining two bachelors degrees, one in marketing, she went on to obtain her MBA in business. What she quickly found out was that there were few resources for women who wanted to start a business, and her friends were looking to her to find the answers. She worked for other companies until in 2009 she was laid off, it was now or never. She took the entire year of 2010 to research starting a company for women and in 2011 she launched Chic-CEO.com, a site devoted to helping women launch their dreams, without all the overwhelm. Todays podcast will teach you to stretch yourself, learn to take risks, trust your gut and stop all that planning. She'll also offer up three of her top tips to opening and starting a business, something every woman should hear! Find out more about Stephanie and her company here.
