The Marvel Cinematic Universe accomplished an unprecedented track record of box office earnings, followed by an uneven phase that included a few box office miscues and a mixed reactions to its span of Disney+ streaming series. In this episode of Hyperspace Theories, Tricia Barr and B.J. Priester discuss two MCU series that had lower profiles in fan attention and viewership, but much to consider in what they got right in their storytelling: the binge-dropped live-action series Echo and the animated series What If? released weekly in its second season. Most significantly, both series featured stories with female leads that drew heavily upon elements of Heroine's Journey stories rather than repeating the long-familiar tropes of male-centered superhero tales. More than a decade ago, prior to the release of the first film in The Hunger Games series, producer Nina Jacobson highlighted a core aspect of the story of Katniss Everdeen: that she is a nurturing heroine rather than a conquering hero. In a similar vein, Captain Carter and Kahhori are heroes motivated by protection rather than power, and Hela and Gamora shift from conquering to nurturing motivations. In Echo, Maya begins the story seeking revenge and power, and ends it dedicated to protecting her family and community. Similarly, the Campbellian Hero's Journey traditionally focuses on a solo hero (who may have some allies), while contemporary Heroine's Journey stories portray her as the center of a team, rejecting savior tropes in favor of collective action and shared success. Captain Carter leads teams of supers in both seasons of What If? and Maya's story progresses from a solo vengeful quest spawned by men who kept her isolated from her family into a finale in which she prevails with a team of allies who help her restore bonds of family. We also note similar themes with Omega and her brothers in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Outside the parameters of the stories themselves, What If? and Echo also provide lessons for Star Wars and other franchises. For one, they reinforce the importance of who creates or writes the story. What If? and The Bad Batch were led by women showrunners, while Echo had two women as head writers, other women on the writing staff, and five episodes directed by women, including four by Sydney Freeland, a Navajo filmmaker. Their perspectives bring a voice and authenticity that comes through in the storytelling. In addition, both series also serve as a reminder that lore and source material only go so far: telling the best story is what matters. The alternate-universe multiverse of What If? demonstrates clearly how departing from the MCU's “Sacred Timeline” can generate compelling and impactful stories that would be impossible within a single continuity – even going so far as to create a new character, Kahhori, who had not existed anywhere in the thousands of pages across decades of Marvel Comics. And although Maya Lopez originated in the comics, the Echo heroine we watch in Echo is changed in significant ways from that version of the character, reframing her characterization to increase the importance of her matrilineal ancestors and her powers to a more protective and defensive rather than combative emphasis – making her far more interesting as a comparison and contrast to the prior heroes in the MCU. Echo continues the journey of Maya Lopez, a skilled fighter who was first seen in the Marvel series, Hawkeye. After the death of her father, Maya escapes Kingpin's gang by returning to her Choctaw Nation home in Oklahoma. It's the first Marvel series to feature a Native American character and explore indigenous culture and history. As Maya Lopez, Echo star Alaqua Cox breaks barriers as a deaf, indigenous amputee. Cinematographer Kira Kelly, ASC enjoyed crafting a Marvel story that didn't require a rigorous backstory from previous Marvel movies or shows. The script included depictions of the history of the Choctaw, including the Choctaw creation myth. “What starts the pilot is the creation myth of the Choctaw people, which had never been shown before,” says Kira. “Sydney Freeland, our director, made sure we did it in a very respectful way, and a way that was authentic to (the Choctaw.) Being able to be part of that visual storytelling is not something that you get to do every day.” Different parts of Echo are separated by a specific look and feel. Most of the series was shot using anamorphic lenses, but Kira chose 12 and 20 mm spherical lenses to depict the beginning of the Choctaw nation at the dawn of time. For Maya's world in New York, Kira used darker and more desaturated lighting. She and director Sydney Freeland agreed that once Maya goes back home to her roots in Oklahoma, deeper, more saturated colors should be part of the visual story. Kira enjoys lighting, and a big part of it is speaking with the production and set designers about what can be built in naturally for success later. She purposefully changed the treatment of the light between the characters of Fisk (Kingpin) and Maya. For Fisk, she played with a direct, single source side light on his face that created more falloff and emphasized shadows to question his loyalties and motivations. Echo was Kira's first experience shooting extensive action sequences and working with a large second unit. She particularly enjoyed recreating the Choctaw Powwow in Oklahoma for the final sequence at the conclusion of the series. The crew had visited the real powwow on a scout, and some of the dancers were hired to perform for the show. “It was a really emotional sequence because we got to be a part of this thing that people who aren't Native American never get to experience. We had created this space for it and the people who are a part of it came up and said, 'This is like a real powwow. You guys created a powwow.' And so it was an honor to be part of something that was visually fulfilling and a great challenge.” Kira is partnering again with director Sydney Freeland for her film, Rez Ball, coming this fall. Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 14 was written by Richard Naing & David Johnson, and directed by Sydney Freeland. We start with a discussion of the last episode… that also discusses this one… again Kyle missed last week’s episode, so we began with his feedback on S5E13 Leave What You Don’t. We also got feedback from Todd and Aaron. recommendation this time out to listen to it to pick up some insights on Leave What You Don’t. Discussion about this episode, in particular, begins at 22 minutes 38 seconds into the episode. The link to the article in DeEtta’s feedback I wanted to highlight the link to the Forbes article mentioned for DeEtta’s feedback. Overall, this one was a mixed bag. It wasn’t a bad episode, with not nearly as many things to point out as the last episode had, but still not up to the quality we expect from this show. There’s a discussion about Ginny in the News, Ratings and Info section… There’s a story point about Virginia/Ginny from an AMC article that we elude to several times during the podcast that we finally discuss during the News, Ratings and Info section. It describes her as an efficiency expert, a cost-cutter or re-organizer that explains a lot about this character that you may not have seen up until now. We also talk about the Talking Dead Twitter backlash, which you can find out about here. Send in your feedback! Please leave your feedback! Front and center in the world of theatrical distribution is the Netflix issue. It felt like a topic that needed addressed right away since this distribution platform is robbing film fanatics of the Theatrical Experience. On this episode we discuss the need for a theatrical release so that a film can officially enter the public consciousnes. Without a theatrical release, great films like Tramps (dir. Adam Leon), Deirdra & Laney Rob a Train (dir. Sydney Freeland) and Win it All (dir. Joe Swanberg) are almost entirely missing from the "Best of 2017" conversations - even though they are available to millions of Netflix customers.
Sydney Freeland: Working with Netflix & Maintain Creative FreedomSPECIAL SUNDANCE EDITION of the Indie Film Hustle PodcastI ran into many filmmakers while fighting the blizzard at this year's Sundance Film Festival but one of the most impressive of the bunch was director Sydney Freeland. Sydney has had a challenging journey to become a director and her story is inspiring, to say the least.Prior to making her first feature-length film, Sundance darling Drunktown's Finest, Sydney Freeland previously worked as a production assistant, as a writer, and as a camera intern. Freeland worked in a number of areas, including; National Geographic, Walt Disney, The Food Network and Comedy Central. Freeland garnered her first taste of success with the six-minute short film, Hoverboard, utilizing Kickstarter to help fund the short. The film was inspired by her love of Back to the Future Part II.Drunktown's Finest is her second venture into filmmaking. The 95-minute long film is a coming-of-age story about the complex issues surrounding identity and the struggles faced by Native American people. The film's name is inspired by a controversial 20/20 segment on ABC News, which branded the town of Gallup, New Mexico as "Drunk Town, USA", after the increase of instances of alcoholism on the border of the Navajo Nation.Freeland wrote, directed Drunktown's Finest as means to combat the negative stereotype of her home community. Sydney Freeland, who is herself a transgender woman, is also directing a digital series about queer and trans women called Her Story.Photo by: NetflixAt this year's Sundance Film Festival Sydney Freeland is premiering her latest film Deidra & Laney Rob a Train, which was financed completely by Netflix. Two teenage sisters start robbing trains to make ends meet after their single mother's emotional meltdown in an electronics store lands her in jail. Coming to Netflix March 17. Here's the trailer. We sit down and discuss how it was like to work with Netflix, if the rumors of creative freedom are true and what Sundance has done for her career. All of these Sundance Series episodes will be co-hosted by Sebastian Twardosz from Circus Road Films and a co-production with Media Circus.Right click here to download the MP3Download on iTunes DirectBTW, Here's a trailer to Sydney Freeland's first Sundance Film Festival film, Drunktown's Finest.
