Filmmaker, critic, video essayist and author Scout Tafoya joins the show to discuss the work of undersung journeyman Bruce Beresford and his brilliant 1991 film 'Black Robe', a story of faith, the frontier, and the church as a pernicious vestige of the European colonial project. Set amidst the 17th Century French conquests of North America in modern-day Quebec, the film follows the titular Black Robe, Father Laforgue, a Jesuit Missionary tasked with bringing Christianity to the indigenous populations of the region. As he ventures deep into Huron territory with his company of Algonquin guides, the limits of his faith and reason are tested, as it becomes clear that his beliefs and the promises they supposedly carry can find no purchase with a people who have no need for them. Greenlit in the wake of the success of 'Dances With Wolves' and cashing in on an exceptional amount of goodwill Beresford had accrued after directing the Academy Award-winning 'Driving Miss Daisy', the film is a brilliant study of self-deception, and the profoundly human impulses of one's perceptions of the divine. We discuss Beresford as filmmaker, his history as a contemporary of Australian greats Peter Weir and George Miller, and why his work deserves an immediate and vast reappraisal. Then, we discuss 'Black Robe', its exacting observations of faith and imperialism, and its unusually sensitive and well-researched portrayals of indigenous American tribes. Finally, we talk about other films in the canon of great portrayals of faith and the frontier, including Michael Mann's gorgeous 'The Last of the Mohicans' and Martin Scorsese's late-period masterpiece 'Silence'. Robertson verzorgde een aantal filmscores, zoals van Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1982), The Color of Money (1987), Shutter Island (2010) en The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).

The Oscars countdown continues! On the thirteenth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by brothers, filmmaker Freddy Burgos and artist Bernardo Goya to talk about Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon! This episode is explicit and spoiler- filled. Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic crime drama film based on a true story depicted in the book by David Grann, about the betrayal of the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma. The film follows Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he returns from war to live with his uncle William “King” Hale (Robert DeNiro). Hale sets Ernest up to be a driver which leads him to meeting Molly Kyle (Lily Gladstone). Ernest and Molly fall in love but Ernest is “under Hale's spell” as they, with help from a few others, plot to kill her family in order to take their wealth. It's a heartbreaking, brutal story focused on this plot while also giving a voice to a story that has been hidden in history for decades. Killers of the Flower Moon marks the first time Scorsese directed his two muses, DeNiro and DiCaprio, in a film. The film also stars Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow. Just last week, Killers of the Flower Moon earned ten Oscar nominations, including the award for “Best Picture”. We are a little over a month away to learning if the film will take home a few Oscars! This episode is both Freddy and Bernardo's ATFT debut! We met on the set of our friend Craig Pedroza's upcoming film We Dream of Eden in 2022. They truly saved this episode. My original guest became unavailable so I was scrambling to find a guest. I asked Bernardo if he'd be interested and he was (!!) so he brought along his brother and the three of us had a great conversation! I learned early on this was a perfect film for us to discuss since they are big Martin Scorsese fans… and it shows in the episode! They have a joint YouTube channel called Fresh Lad Collective where they post, according to their bio, "cinematic shenanigans" which includes short films, vlogs, and compilations. Check out their channel by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/@freshladcollective/featured In this episode, Freddy, Bernardo, and I attempt to understand the complicated grey areas of the film such as the highly debated question, “Does Ernest really love Molly?”. Bernardo gave this film high praise, regarding it as Scorsese's “magnum opus”. Since Freddy and Bernardo are big fans of Scorsese, a lot of the episode focuses on him as they compare this film to previous films in Scorsese's filmography such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Departed. I spoke about the Scorsese film from the New Hollywood era that made me gain an even stronger respect for him. We also talked about the mafia- like parallel/ similarities, the dynamic between Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro, Lily Gladstone's powerful and moving performance, and much more! Tune in as Arthur brings back his friend Daxh Alanis for a discussion on Echo, the new MCU miniseries that's premiering on Disney+ (as well as Hulu) and bringing us back around to Maya Lopez, the street-level fighter and deaf amputee whom we had met back in 2021's Hawkeye. The badassery of both Maya and Alaqua Cox, Kingpin continuing to be enthralling as ever amongst the comic book villains out there, and the iffiness of that mindscape scene comprise a few of the talking points for this episode. Created by Marion Dayre, Echo stars Alaqua Cox, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, Cody Lightning, Graham Greene, Vincent D'Onofrio, Katarina Ziervogel, Charlie Cox, Julia Jones, Morningstar Angeline, Dannie McCallum, and Andrew Howard. Oil & Blood: Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon Take a listen as Mr. Chavez & I kick off the month of November with a series of films curated by your host and producer, Rick Ramos. We begin with a discussion of Martin Scorsese's newest film - currently in theaters - Killers of the Flower Moon, a beautifully realized adaptation of David Grann's 2017 non-fiction best seller, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. Featuring exceptional performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, new comer Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, Tantoo Cardinal, Brendan Fraser, and a powerfully restrained Robert DeNiro, Killers of the Flower Moon is a beautifully told and powerfully moving dramatization of the Osage murders of the early 1920s. Scorsese has crafted a nuanced and gripping film that only time will allow the revelation of its complete impact. It was a pleasure to begin November with this film. In Martin Scorsese's first movie since “The Irishman”, he brings us a true story of deception, treachery and murder all over money from oil discovered by the Osage Indians in “Killers Of The Flower Moon.” Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro and Lily Gladstone star. DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkhart, a WWI soldier who seeks to make a home in Oklahoma. DeNiro plays his uncle Bill “King” Hale who is known as a community leader and friend to the Osage. Gladstone plays Mollie, who is a part of a wealthy Osage family, who Bill convinces Ernest to woo and marry for her family's oil money. Bill is in no mood to just wait for this Osage family to die. He'd like to accelerate the process, and does. Is it worth checking out? Watch my spoiler-free review to find out. This also stars Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Cara Jade Meyers, Janae Collins, Jillian Dion, Jason Isbell, William Belleau, Louis Cancelmi, Scott Shepherd, Everett Waller, Talee Redcorn, Yancey Red Corn, Tatanka Means. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio is finally releasing in theatres in India on 20th October 2023. The film is based on the book by David Grann and narrates the true story of the murders of the Native American tribe, Osage Nation after oil was discovered on their land in the 1920s. It is among the several artistic works released over the years, focusing on the Osage Murders. Films such as the 1926 production Osage Hills and the 1959 film The FBI Story explore the pain and injustice suffered by the Osage Nation. Scorsese's chilling account of the atrocious events has already raked in rave reviews at Cannes this year. It features an ensemble cast of Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser along with lead star DiCaprio. So for today's Now You Know podcast we take a look at lesser-known facts about Killers of the Flower Moon.
Daniel, Shahbaz, & Anthony review Martin Scorsese's KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON based on the novel by David Grann. At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, with Jesse Plemons, Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser. Killers of the Flower Moon releases in theatres October 20, 2023, by Apple TV+ (under their Apple Original Films label) and Paramount Pictures with a streaming release on Apple TV+ coming at a later date. Good Saturday morning, or I guess Sunday for you, from Buena Park, California, where the Knott's Berry Farm rollercoaster shushes past every few minutes, accompanied by screaming. It's like being in a Jordan Peele movie! Being in Los Angeles reminds me of coming to Los Angeles, which reminds me of Tim and what, as a rural Oklahoma boy, he wanted with every meal, an item a New York City ate maybe twice a year, at the holidays, namely: Gravy. But not this kind! Cleaning out my mom's pantry earlier this year I found a can of this and, more as a science experiment, decided to see what might be done with it. After adding salt, pepper, a splash of sherry and some butter, my best solution was to pour the stuff down the drain, really, save yourself the trouble (and the money!) and make homemade, recipe in episode notes. As I relate in the episode, I met Tim Sampson on the PBS miniseries Roanoak, about the lost colony thereof. I am not sure whether this opening canoe scene is the same one I tell you about, the one where Tim saved me from drowning. But maybe!I mention here that, after Tim and I fell in love, I followed him out to California. I bought a used station wagon in upstate New York and slept in truck stops on my way west. My first stop was somewhere west of Pittsburgh. It was late, and the all-night diner was open. I sat at the serpentine counter and ordered a grilled cheese and watched the waitress pout coffee for a man in a Carhartt (or similar) jacket and watched them quietly talk, watched as she lingered holding the coffee pot. My impression was that there was intimacy here, maybe not a relationship so much as a conversation picked up each time he stopped in. Or maybe it was just this one time. Maybe this was her gift, her job. I am sure I had some sort of reading material that I ignored as I watched them.It was not until four years later that I wondered whether I always somehow knew the work I was headed for. By that time, the drive cross-country yielded what's below.Episode notes: “The neighbors at Curson Avenue in West Hollywood were mostly Armenian, including the dozen or so housedress-clad older women in the apartment complex next door, women who would verily ululate at our fence when they realized we were having another get-together for two hundred. On the other side was a two-story complex where my brother's friend Todd lived. Todd was a plumber who shared an apartment with his mother-in-law, an Armenian widow in black, and his SoCal, short-shorts-wearing wife. At twenty-four, Todd already had two kids, the first born blind. Todd spent every afternoon in our yard smoking pot, and that's where he was when his wife banged open the screen door and stood on their balcony. “TAHD!” she screamed, “I'M PREGNANT AGAIN!” “Cool,” Todd squeaked, trying not to exhale. - “Meet the Neighbors,” from Forty Bucks and a Dream, Stories of Los Angeles, by Nancy RommelmannDances With Wolves was a pretty massive cultural event, especially so for Native actors, as many more historical westerns were about to be made and provide employment. Many of these young actors started down to LA from the rez, some of whom wound up hanging at the home in Hollywood where Tim and I lived with our baby girl. These included Rodney Grant and the late Steve Reevis. Tantoo Cardinal had appeared in an earlier movie with Tim called War Party. Will Sampson talking about how all the Indian heroes for kids are dead. I've told the story (scroll down) of how my daughter Tafv wound up playing the part of “Gram” on Reservation Dogs. The below does not include her opening scene with Lily Gladstone:Tafv went on to set decorate an independent film called Fancy Dance, which also stars Lily, who also stars in another movie you might have heard of.You see this trailer, and her appearance in Rez Dogs, and it does not need to be explained that her acting is otherworldly. Writing about Josh Drum and all the other young Native actors who passed through our home and whom I cooked and cooked and happily cooked for, in 1990-1992. “Taking My Ex Back In (for His Own Good),” by Nancy Rommelmann (New York Times “Modern Love”)I cannot carve out the video of Tim going “Mmmm!” but it's here, scroll through. The second to last image is from our daughter's wedding day, when we knew Tim was terminal. Okay okay, let's make some gravy. It's flexible, just remember the ratios and up them depending on how much you want to make:2 tablespoons fat or meat drippings, 2 tablespoons flour, 2 CUPS stock or other liquids. (I accidentally said tablespoons in the audio.) You can play with this in any number of ways; add some wine or sherry or fresh-chopped herbs. It's super-easy and makes dinner festive!GravyAdd chicken fat or beef drippings to a frying pad. Heat over medium heat until bubbly. Using a rubberized whisk, add flour. Cook two minutes, stirring constantly, until flour takes on a bit of color. Add about a 1/4 cup of liquid and whisk, Mixture will seize up. Add another 1/4 cup and keep whisking until gravy loosens. Continue adding and whisking until you have a smooth gravy. Add salt and pepper to taste.Gravy is very flexible! Using cream for up to half your stock in a beef gravy is lovely. And please, I beg of you, send me your best biscuit recipes xx This is a public episode. On this episode, we celebrate Indigenous people breaking barriers and healing nations through the power of language and art. Brothers Hjalmer Wenstob and Timmy Masso are making Nuu-chah-nulth art in the midst of a pandemic to offer strength to their community and mark a significant moment in history. They recently shared an original song in a youtube video as a gift to all nations. Tantoo Cardinal is one of the most recognizable Indigenous actors in Canada and recently received the Governor General's lifetime artistic achievement award for her wide ranging work on the small and big screens. As a nod to her journey, we revisit a conversation she had with Rosanna Deerchild in 2018 in which she describes her absolute commitment to sticking with a career in the performing arts, even when she was one of the only Indigenous women in the room. Rassi Nashalik is a brand new inductee to the CBC News Hall of Fame - the first Inuk and Indigenous person to be recognized. We celebrate her many accomplishments, including her self-taught beginnings as a journalist and her skillful ability as a news host to translate English scripts into Inuktitut — live and in real time — for her audience.
This week's Throwback Thursday episode we review Smoke Signals! Starring Adam Beach, Eva Adams, Irene Bedard, Tantoo Cardinal, and Gary Farmer.

Hiiii, it’s Kiiim! We are just pleased as punch to have Kimberly Norris Guerrero on the show today. You Might Know Her From The Wilds, The Cherokee Word for Water, The Glorias, Son of the Morning Star, Seinfeld, Naturally Native, and the original Broadway production of August: Osage County. Kimberly was kind enough to indulge our questions about playing Martha’s mom Bernice on our current obsession, The Wilds, playing real life icon and activist Wilma Mankiller (twice!), and getting to imbue her character Johnna in August: Osage County with the varied stories of the real Native women in her life. This impressive sequel is even more dramatic on audio. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Emily Connelly recommend Margaret Atwood’s sequel to her dystopian classic, THE HANDMAID’S TALE. Set fifteen years after Offred fled Gilead, the story focuses on the lives of Aunts, Wives, and children in that society. The imposing Aunt Lydia is a central player in Gilead, and her secretive diary entries are narrated by Ann Dowd, known for her role as Aunt Lydia on the television adaptation. Witness testimonies are narrated by Bryce Dallas Howard and Mae Whitman, whose voices reflect the divergent lives they live as children in Gilead and Canada. Published by Random House Audio. Tantoo Cardinal sits down with David Moses for a chat.
On this episode of the podcast, I talk with Oakland-based artist Katie Dorame. Dorame primarily works in painting and drawing to weave together elements from classic and camp Hollywood movies, genre fiction, and archival research to create narratives that explore colonialism and Native American pop-culture representations, leavened with moments of humor. Her work complicates this season’s theme of “movement,” challenging us to remember that movement is defined by the places moved through or into; that the power to enter in to a space is not the same as being welcomed in; and that the narratives that shape our knowledge of those journeys are a potential site to reclaim agency. In one of her signature series, Alien Apostles, Franciscan priests are depicted as invading outer space entities, terrorizing California’s Native peoples and facing staunch resistance. In Pirates & Sea Ghouls, she populates scenes from swashbuckling pirate cinema with Native American actors including Irene Bedard, Wes Studi, and Tantoo Cardinal, reimagining those oceanic Western fictions as a site for indigenous centered adventure. In our conversation we discuss the sources of her work; the compression of past, present, and future; and how painting suits her need for a reclusive practice. Katie Dorame is a visual artist, primarily working in painting, born in Los Angeles, currently living and working in Oakland. Dorame’s work has been exhibited at Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles, Southern Exposure, Galería de la Raza, Incline Gallery, and the Thacher Gallery in San Francisco as well as the Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College in New York. She received her MFA from the California College of the Arts and her BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is an Indigenous artist of mixed descent, and member of the Gabrielino/Tongva tribe of California. --- Subscribe to Art Practical on iTunes to catch (un)making as soon as it publishes, or look for it here every other Wednesday! Set in a dystopian future (never, never utopian!) where there are no apples and only the bad guys have shoes, Renton (no not that Renton) a well groomed engineer/underwear model is stuck in a Groundhog Dog style loop which has something (or nothing) in connection with a mysterious energy source. Neither taut nor thrilling this sci-fi misfire had some interesting ideas but was let down by the cheap sets, unconvincing acting, incoherent plot and unintentional moments of comedy. Despite its short running time of 89 minute the film was a bit of a slog for all to watch and reminded everyone of much better time looping films than this (Groundhog Day, Source Code, Edge of Tomorrow). There was so, so much love for the far superior Edge of Tomorrow from everyone, maybe watch that instead (crosses fingers Netflix will have it soon...)
