“You got your Oscar, which was an unfortunate night for everyone…” - Steve on Will Smith On this week's episode, we're kicking off a two-episode tribute to the legendary Gene Hackman with a convo about the better-than-you-remember surveillance thriller, Enemy of the State! First off, this ain't no sequel to The Conversation, let's get that straight! But you do have an amazingly cranky and paranoid Gene Hackman running around with a nearly never-better Will Smith as they dodge Jon Voight and his stable of late-90's Gen-X character actors! Why was the great Jason Robards uncredited? Same question for Philip Baker Hall! Why couldn't a rocket hit Jamie Kennedy and Seth Green's surveillance van? And how incredible is that effect shot with Jason Lee and the firetruck? PLUS: Brill interrogates the Peanuts Gang! Enemy of the State stars Will Smith, Jon Voight, Lisa Bonet, Regina King, Stuart Wilson, Barry Pepper, Ian Hart, Jake Busey, Scott Chan, Jason Lee, Gabriel Byrne, James Le Gros, Dan Butler, Jack Black, Jamie Kennedy, Bodhi Elfman, Anna Gunn, Lillo Brancato, John Capodice, Ivana Milicevic, Grant Heslov, Seth Green, Philip Baker Hall, Jason Robards, Tom Sizemore, and the late, forever great, Gene Hackman as Brill; directed by Tony Scott. I go back to 1994 for this week's review. Specifically the epic, action-packed Arnold Schwarzenegger spy thriller True Lies. This was James Cameron teaming up again with his Terminator for this big budget, eye-popping spectacle. Schwarzenegger plays Harry Tasker who has his wife and daughter convinced that he's just a dull to the bone computer salesman. In reality he's a spy for the covert Omega Sector hunting down and stopping threats. Things get dicey when he hears something that makes him think his wife is having an affair and he investigates. Some terrorists really end up spoiling his investigation, just to launch a nuclear attack plot on the United States. Schwarzenegger is joined by Jamie Lee Curtis as his wife, Eliza Dushku as his daughter, Tom Arnold as his partner and the late, great Bill Paxton as “super spy” Simon. If, amazingly you haven't seen this, is it worth checking out? Watch my retro review of True Lies to find out. True Lies co-stars Tia Carrere, Art Malik, Grant Heslov and Charlton Heston.Support the Show.Feel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

It's Die Hard in an action comedy spy romp! This week on the show, spymasters Phil and Liam have recruited special guest Bilge Ebiri - film critic for Vulture and New York magazine – to analyze TRUE LIES, aka “the American blockbuster riff on the French sex farce” (to quote Liam). In this bombastic action comedy, seemingly unassuming computer salesman Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is actually living a double life as an international superspy for the US government's mysterious ‘Omega Sector'. Harry has managed to keep this secret from his wife Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) and daughter Dana (Eliza Dushku) for 15 years, but due to circumstances beyond his control, this grand lie is finally exposed, thrusting Harry, Helen and Dana into grave danger at the hands of a ruthless terrorist organization known as ‘Crimson Jihad'.TRUE LIES was a box office behemoth in the golden summer of 1994, and the guys discuss their memories of its initial release, and their thoughts on how the film's politics have aged over the last three decades. As ever, this heart-warming story of an emotionally estranged husband and wife battling terrorists together contains a surprising high amount of ‘Die Hard DNA', and it turns out that this popcorn blockbuster actually touches on some deeper themes about the American nuclear family. The trio dig deep on the “reality distortion field” that allowed Arnold to convincingly play a “boring” everyman, sing the praises of the effervescent icon that is Jamie Lee Curtis, and discuss the respective merits of the stellar supporting cast, that includes Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Art Malik, Grant Heslov, Charlton Heston and Tia Carrere. There's also plenty of chat about the myriad talents of Mr. James Cameron: king of the world, king of the sequel, and king of the third act.The guys hop in their harrier jump jets and head over to the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to hand out some action movie awards, and as always the frivolity culminates with a delectable trivia quiz that makes you want to stand up and beg for buttermilk! TRUE LIES trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz45Y50ozxEAt the time of release, TRUE LIES is streaming on Hulu, Paramount +/Apple TV and Fubo.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

George Clooney explains how to be a Jedi to Ewan McGregor in director Grant Heslov's debut feature, satirical war movie THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS. Reporter Bob Wilton (McGregor) investigates the New Earth Army, a branch of the US military tasked with advancing America's interests by exploiting the paranormal and the psychic. A stellar cast and a smart Coen-lite script gives us some funny moments but the tone wavers between screwball and scathing and sometimes misses both targets. Think Fear and Loathing In Iraq or The Big Lebowsk-IED, whilst it never quite lives up to the potential of its premise this is a solidly entertaining and original comedy which once again features Kevin Spacey as an insufferable ar*ehole, a part he was apparently born to play.
It has been argued that there is no such thing as a “perfect” film. On this week's episode of Not A Bomb, we put that theory to the test as Troy and Brad discuss 1995's talking gorilla film - Congo. The guys cannot tackle such a film as Congo without help, so they welcome Charlie back to the show but also The Twisted Kid Matt - host of The Mix Tape Podcast makes his Not A Bomb debut. The podcast quickly devolves into juvenile human/gorilla relationship jokes, turning Dylan Walsh into a human punching bag, and praising what should have been Delroy Lindo's Academy Award Winning performance. *** Just a warning, this episode is NSFW so DO NOT listen in your car with your kids! Dwayne Johnson's 2002 debut feature film is a D&D game set to a heavy metal soundtrack and if you are a 14-year-old boy, or simply have a taste for the simple yet earnest cultural products that might appeal to a 14-year-old boy, then The Scorpion King may be for you. After watching The Scorpion King, Hemal and Brian (the co-hosts of Ten Movies) both agreed that, whatever its faults, the movie was a romp. Those faults include the movie's dismissive treatment of its (lone) woman character, though we could not, in good conscience, object her to skimpy costume, as no one is wearing a whole lot in this movie. The Scorpion King was directed by Chuck Russell, and stars Steven Brand, Kelly Hu, Grant Heslov, and the late Michael Clarke Duncan, in addition to Dwayne Johnson. Also, spoiler alert, The Rock has a full head of hair in this movie, so if you are used to thinking of him as canonically bald, as we are, it's a bit of a shock.

From never being on a TV staff, to becoming the creator and showrunner of “House of Cards,” Netflix's original foray into dramatic television and the corrupted world of politics… this week's interview with screenwriter, painter, and playwright Beau Willimon is sure to inspire you! Beau Willimon is a screenwriter, playwright, producer and most recently, an executive producer, showrunner and creator of Netflix's original series “House of Cards,” a wicked one-hour drama, from Media Rights Capital, that slithers behind the curtain of power, sex, ambition, love, greed and corruption in modern Washington D.C. His play “Farragut North,” became the basis for the motion picture screenplay “Ides of March,” which he co-wrote with George Clooney and Grant Heslov. “Ides of March” earned Willimon Academy Award®, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, and it won The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Award for Best Screenplay. Other plays include “Lower Ninth” (Flea Theater, 2008; UK premiere, Donmar Warehouse, 2010), and “Spirit Control” (Manhattan Theatre Club, 2010). Subsequent productions of his plays have been mounted across the U.S. and overseas. Willimon was a recipient of the Lila Acheson Wallace Juilliard Playwriting Fellowship, named 2008 Playwright-in-Residence at the Donmar Warehouse, and he is a two-time winner of the Lincoln Center Le Comte du Nouy Award. Current theater commissions include works for the National Theatre of Great Britain, South Coast Rep, and the Flea Theater. His most recent play, “The Parisian Woman,” premieres at South Coast Repertory in the spring and will star Dana Delany, Steven Culp, Linda Gehringer and Rebecca Mozo. The play was inspired by Henri Becque's “La Parisienne.” Recently Willimon co-founded Westward Productions, a film and television production company, with co-founder Jordan Tappis. Among Westward Production's current projects is the forthcoming “Wally and Andre Shoot Ibsen” – a film adaption of Ibsen's play “Master Builder” developed by Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, directed by Jonathan Demme. Willimon is an Executive Producer on the film. Other projects in development include a documentary about adventure traveler Karl Bushby's quest to circumnavigate the globe on foot over the course of two decades, and a documentary about Westerly Windina, a transgender Australian woman formerly known as legendary pro-surfer Peter Drouyn. In addition to his career as a writer and producer, Willimon served on a number of political campaigns, including Chuck Schumer's 1998 senate race, Bill Bradley's 2000 presidential race, Hillary Clinton's 2000 senate race and Howard Dean's 2004 presidential race. Willimon graduated with a B.A. from Columbia University in 1999 and an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Columbia University's School of the Arts in 2003. A St. Louis native, he now resides in Brooklyn, NY. Welcome, hello, G’Day, hi, we are glad to announce the latest episode from Nerds Amalgamated is here. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording it for you. Also as Supanova Brisbane has now happened we have to say thank you to all those who stopped by the booth, it was fantastic to meet you all. We hope everyone enjoyed the week end and have lots of photos to remember how cool it was. It was awesome seeing so many amazing cosplayers and catching up with our friends from Comics2Movies, the Sons of Obiwan, Jamie Johnson, Super Tee, Cyanide Pop Press among so many others. First up this week we have facial recognition drones being utilised by Police Scotland to help find people who get lost. That’s right folks, AI drones using facial recognition to find individuals. Now, we know what you are thinking, hang on, this is a problem, next we know it will be used for… You will need to listen in to find out more. But we are sure you will enjoy it and have a laugh. Second, we have news that is promising for game developers and gamers all over the world. Yep, that is a bold claim, but we are sure you will agree when you hear it. Those legends at Take Two have discussed the future of gaming and the expectations of a drop in the costs of game development. What is suggested is great and worth looking forward to. We have some fun on this topic and really get into it. Our third topic for the week is about Stargate Command. No, the Goa'uld aren’t attacking, and the Wraith haven’t found the way through the Stargate to our universe. No, it is sad news, but possibly good news also. That’s right, a little bit of good news to look forward to that off sets the bad news. Now for the fans of Stargate this news is pretty big, and for those who need to evolve their appreciation then you better hurry up. The Professor and Buck are now contemplating a marathon viewing based on this news. Want to know what this news is you know what to do. As normal we have the shout outs, birthdays, remembrances, and special events. As always, thank you for listening, take care of yourselve’s, look out for each other and stay hydrated.Facial Recognition Drones - https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-50262650Take Two’s hot take on Next gen - https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2019-09-19-next-gen-wont-see-dev-costs-spike-take-twoMGM shutting down Stargate Command - https://boundingintocomics.com/2019/11/01/mgm-shuts-down-stargate-command/Games currently playingBuck– Call OF Duty WW2 - https://store.steampowered.com/app/476600/Call_of_Duty_WWII/Prof– Call Of Duty WW2 - https://store.steampowered.com/app/476600/Call_of_Duty_WWII/DJ- Did Not PlayOther topics discussedDrone Interrupts soccer match- https://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/oct/15/albania-charged-uefa-serbiaChinese police anti drone guns- https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2079045/chinese-police-force-equipped-anti-drone-gunsHong Kong bans make up- https://boingboing.net/2019/10/05/facially-absurd.htmlHong Kong ban masks- https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/10/hong-kong-protesters-rally-ban-wearing-masks-191004144726630.htmlDutch police use eagles to hunt drones- https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/12/16767000/police-netherlands-eagles-rogue-drones‘Missing’ Icelandic tourist- https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/missing-icelandic-tourist-goes-in-search-of-herself-8096831.htmlAn Aspie Life (PC Game)- https://store.steampowered.com/app/786410/An_Aspie_Life/Joseph Mallozzi’s blog post on the future of Stargate Command site- https://josephmallozzi.com/2019/10/31/october-31-2019-stargate-command-and-the-future-of-stargate/New Melbourne Brown Coats (Firefly & Serenity fan club in Melbourne Victoria)- https://www.facebook.com/newmelbournebrowncoats/Drostand Hynd (Call of Duty : WWII Character voiced by David Tennent)- https://callofduty.fandom.com/wiki/Drostan_HyndThe Monuments Men (2014 war film directed by George Clooney, and written and produced by Clooney and Grant Heslov.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monuments_MenCanadarm (also known as Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS))- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CanadarmChicken Run 2- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_Run_2Hulk (2003 American superhero film directed by Ang Lee based on the fictionalMarvel Comicscharacter of the same name.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulk_(film)Lou Ferrigno (American actor, fitness trainer, fitness consultant and retired professional bodybuilder)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_FerrignoThe Incredible Hulk (2008 American superhero film directed by Louis Leterrier based on the Marvel Comics character the Hulk, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Universal Pictures)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Incredible_Hulk_(film)Shoutouts4 Nov 1922 – In Egypt, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his men find the entrance to Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings. How did it get to be that the obvious gift for all of these people is... a Dr. Seuss book? And then: Vulture, this week, published a click-bait listicle ranking all the HBO shows ever. The Nose took the bait and clicked. And... Six Feet Under didn't make the top ten? Girls isn't in the top 25? John from Cincinnati made the top 30? Did anybody even understand that show? And speaking of shows, George Clooney and Grant Heslov's new Hulu miniseries is a four-and-a-half-hour, six-episode adaption of Joseph Heller's Catch-22. Is that what the world needed right now?Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
2017 was a rough year for Paramount and their awards slate, but none of their films bombed as hard as George Clooney’s Suburbicon. Retooled by Clooney and his writing partner Grant Heslov from a Coen Brothers’ script that sat unproduced for 30 years, the Coens’ brand of misanthropic crime saga is infused with a very … Continue reading "039 – Suburbicon"
In this episode, Kelle teaches us about Remote Viewing...or the ability to bi-locate your consciousness to allow you to “see” a place outside of your normal view. Kelle talks about what remote viewing is, how it works, and some ways to get started doing. Like many other psychic abilities with low danger levels, she encourages listeners to “play with it” in order to see how strong you are in it. Kelle also talks about some plans she has for future episodes of Spirit Sherpa to include actual listeners of the show sharing their stories and their spiritual journeys with others. If you’re interested in participating (and why wouldn’t you be??), email Kelle at kelle@kellesparta.com. Kelle also introduces her Permanent Stress Reduction course (link in references below).References:-For more information about Kelle Sparta: www.kellesparta.comTo contact Kelle email: kelle@kellesparta.com-Driveabout (Spirit Sherpa Theme): Driveabout (Full Version)Written by: Kelle SpartaPerformed by: Kelle Sparta and Daniel SingerProduced by: Daniel Singer-The Men Who Stare at Goats - book by Jon Ronson, published by Picador and Simon & Schuster, 2004-The Men Who Stare at Goats - directed by Grant Heslov, produced by Smoke House Pictures and BBC Films, 2009- Kelle’s Permanent Stress Reduction Course - http://permanentstressreduction.comKeywords:Kelle Sparta, The Spirit Doctor, Spirit Sherpa, Spirit, Spiritual Life, Manifestation, Magick, Realms, Shaman, Shamanism, Wicca, Paganism, Life Transformation, Personal Journey, Personal Growth, Remote Viewing, The Men Who Stare At Goats, Astral Projection, Permanent Stress ReductionCredits and Licensing:“Spirit Sherpa” is the sole property of Kelle Sparta Enterprises and is distributed under a Creative Commons: BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. Hollister and O’Toole cast their ballots on Our Brand Is Crisis, inspired by Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary of the same name. One thinks it’s the best of Sandra Bullock to date; the other thinks the screenplay (written by Oscar nominee Peter Straughan, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) hit an Act II speed bump. Starring Sandra Bullock, Billy Bob Thornton, Ann Dowd, Anthony Mackie, Joaquim de Almeida, and Zoe Kazan. Produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov (who brought us the Oscar-winning Argo). Incidentally, Happy Election Day. Don’t forget to vote.

Tate Donovan, currently starring in the Oscar nominated Argo, and Deception on the small screen joins host Robin Milling. Some might remember Tate as Joshua, Jennifer Aniston's on and off again boyfriend on Friends, the concerned parent from The O.C., or Glenn Close's loyal law partner on Damages. Deception is the Monday night guilty pleasure which has everyone wondering whether Tate's character murdered his sister. Tate tells Robin how his college days at USC rooming with Grant Heslov, who went on to become production partners with George Clooney, gave him a leg up casting him in Good Night and Good Luck and now Argo. Donovan is rooting for his buddy Grant whose film is sweeping the awards circuit, including director Ben Affleck who Tate says taught him a thing or two about directing. Tate got his break behind the camera with the California based television series The O.C. taking advantage of his free time between takes to shadow the director. Most recently he directed an episode of Deception which brought him back to the scene of his childhood. He says staging a shoot-out at the Bronx bakery where his family frequented from New Jersey with six siblings in tow was a big thrill especially having his mother there on the set.
