Conscious Bacteria? The Secret New Science of Cellular Intelligence | Zach Bush : 1275

What if mitochondria weren't just energy engines — but conscious beings guiding your survival and evolution? In this episode, Dave Asprey sits down with Zach Bush, MD, to uncover a radical new science of cellular intelligence. Together, they reveal how your mitochondria, microbiome, and genetic memory do far more than support survival—they actively shape consciousness, drive healing, and accelerate human evolution. You'll discover why chronic disease, fatigue, brain fog, and emotional trauma often trace back to lost cellular communication—and how restoring that network can unlock radical resilience, deeper energy, and true longevity. Through the lens of soil health, vibrational biology, light frequencies, and ancient microbial wisdom, Zach Bush shows why the future of biohacking demands reconnection to the deeper intelligence already alive inside you. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • How mitochondria act as conscious messengers—not just energy factories—and why that changes everything about health and aging • Why rebuilding gut microbiome intelligence strengthens immune function, brain health, and emotional resilience • How disrupted cellular communication fuels chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, and premature aging • How emotional trauma imprints onto genetic expression and triggers mitochondrial collapse • Why viruses and bacteria serve as evolutionary partners—not enemies—and how they upgrade your biology • How “cellular safety” activates healing, regeneration, and peak human performance • How carbon cycles, soil health, and light frequencies repair DNA and extend human lifespan • Simple daily practices that rebuild cellular coherence, boost energy, and reconnect you to your innate intelligence This conversation will rewire how you think about health, disease, and human potential—giving you the tools to upgrade your biology at the deepest level. **Check out Zach's exclusive offer for The Human Upgrade listeners at https://intelligenceofnature.com/ and use code ‘DAVE10” for a discount!** SPONSORS - ARMRA | Go to https://tryarmra.com/ and use the code DAVE to get 15% off your first order. - Apollo Neuro | To get an Apollo wearable, go to https://apolloneuro.com/Dave and save 15%. The tables have turned as longtime friend, student and Television Producer, Lauren Gleason, interviews Ali about her body-based method, Personal Geometry® - a practice she developed to give the body a language that our cognitive minds can immediately access and understand.  Together, they explore how Personal Geometry® and body mapping techniques are used in therapeutic and clinical healing, particularly in addressing challenges related to the body, sexuality, and addiction. Ali shares how she refined her method while working in renowned rehab centres in Los Angeles, offering real-life examples of its impact and honoring the influence and her experience of Family Constellation Work. They discuss the power of mapping relational dynamics - how visualizing the roles we hold in family systems can illuminate unconscious patterns, especially in the context of addiction and trauma. Other topics explored include the common phenomenon of emotional incest, the challenges and call to work with perpetrators, sexual biases as a facilitator, and our universal need to belong. At its core, Personal Geometry® is a somatic practice that taps into the body's innate, felt-sense understanding of spatial relationships. By bypassing psychological defense mechanisms, it directly reveals how we unconsciously position ourselves in relation to others, environments, and internal conflicts. In this episode, Ali Mezey share the concept of 'Soma' as illuminated by Master Bodyworker and Author, Thomas Hanna, in his book The Body of Life. Thomas Hanna coined the term 'somatic' now used extensively by practitioners of many body-based disciplines - he is one of the grandfathers of body therapy practiced all over the world in infinite variation. in this episode, Ali reads  out of the introductory chapter which discussing the distinction between the physical body and the living, dynamic 'Soma' and dives into the broader context of human embodiment. Hanna's body of work, and this episode, offer a profound perspective on the interconnectedness, adaptability, and intrinsic intelligence of living systems. He was 61.Born November 21, 1928, in Waco, Texas, Hanna was the founder of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training in Novato, California and the editor of Somatics: Magazine-Journal of the Bodily Arts and Sciences. He also authored seven books, perhaps best know for Bodies in Revolt: A Primer in Somatic Thinking (1970) and Somatics (1989).Hanna is survived by his wife, Eleanor Criswell, and three children, daughters Tad Hanna and Wendell Zitelman , and son Michael Hanna. As an undergraduate at Texas Christian University from which he received a bachelor's in 1949, Hanna initially thought about going into theology. He continued studies at the University of Chicago, later receiving a Bachelor of Divinity and then a doctorate in philosophy.Hanna taught in Europe and several colleges throughout the U.S. At his memorial service held, Aug. 12, several people referred to his popularity as a teacher. One speaker recalled an incident while Hanna was teaching at the University of Florida. He was having car trouble and was going to be late getting to his class. He called his secretary as asked her to notify the class that he would be there but would arrive late. When he did arrive an hour and a half late, the class of 700 yoga students was still waiting for him in the ROTC quadrangle where the class met. Truly he was an engaging teacher. His commitment and involvement with his material, as well as his skill at communicating it, inspired his students. In his early seminal books, he posed philosophical questions about humanity, i.e. what is it to be human, to be embodied, to be free? Those questions run like themes though his work. They were questions he never ceased exploring. In the early 1970's, after reading Bodies in Revolt, a well-known member of the bodywork world suggested he meet and study with Moshe Feldenkrais. As a result, Hanna studied with Feldenkrais in 1973 and 1974, and organized the first four-year Feldenkrais training program in the U.S. in 1975. He also founded the Novato Institute in 1975.Hanna considered himself a writer, philosopher and teacher, not a bodyworker. He called the hands-on work Clinical Somatic Education. It was his strong belief that real change can only occur from within and not be imposed on someone from the outside. It is the difference between working on someone and working with someone. The goal was not to change tissue but to restore awareness and voluntary control over the sensory-motor system. He believed that people were affected by a condition he termed sensory motor amnesia (SMA), and his work was designed to correct this. The concept of SMA is that if you lose your awareness of a part of your body, either through trauma or habituation, you lose your ability o move that part. Restoring awareness restores voluntary control. This can then be reinforced with simple movement patterns similar to Feldenkrais movement.Hanna often referred to F.M. Alexander and Feldenkrais as important teachers for him. According to Hanna, Feldenkrais has made a tremendously important discovery about body function, but hadn't fully explored the implications of that discovery himself. Hanna used the analogy that Feldenkrais had opened the door to a vast new territory, but had not gone inside to explore. Hanna had gone through the door and was exploring this new territory in light of recent development in neurophysiology, and the implications were breathtaking. Feldenkrais had said, and Hanna reiterated, that there is no limit what people can learn. In an editorial last fall/winter, Hanna wrote about human mortality, analogizing it with his flowers:“There was only one difference between the flowers and me: the impatiens affirmed the eternity of life, and I did not. The impatiens were pure in the way they lived, and I was sullied with contradiction…I realized that, all things considered, it was the impatiens who lived life to the fullest, whereas I was living my life, hamstrung. It was not I who was superior, but they…Is total affirmation of life and growth the highest good, or is it some kind of sinful ignorance? Should I live awaiting the end that I have envisaged, or should I live expecting only life and only future?“Who is wiser? I, or the impatiens? I think the impatiens are wiser. They assume only what they know and feel. They do not assume something they do not know and feel…“And so I water my impatiens this summer and into the autumn. And I gaze at their happy innocence. They are my teachers, just as my mother is my teacher. And the water sinks down into the soil, giving life. It is the same soil from which I sprang and my mother sprang. And it is the same soil that will receive us both.“If I trusted it to give us life at the beginning, I might just as well trust it to give us life at the end. In that way, I have joined in a wisdom that tells me that my mother, my flowers, and I myself are now together and somehow will always be.”- Victoria Carmona, a student of Hanna's, contributed to this report. From Massa...

It's no secret that wellness programs like neurosomatic intelligence coaching often lack accessibility in marginalized communities, where populations most in need of such services are usually underserved and underprivileged. Unfortunately, these programs are often not tailored to meet the specific needs of these communities. Hence, there's a pressing need to rethink our approach and become more innovative in how we deliver them. Today, we're joined by Martin Simms, one of our NSI coaches, who has exemplified this innovative approach. Martin has pioneered a sports-based youth development program called D.O.P.E., which utilizes sports and movement to support youth and adolescents in underserved communities, helping them overcome trauma and fostering life skills they might otherwise lack access to. In this episode, Martin shares his personal journey with neurosomatic intelligence coaching, detailing how it transformed his life. He discusses overcoming his own dissociative behaviors and the profound impact it had on his relationships, both with his wife and in raising his son. Additionally, Martin delves into the creative and effective methods employed in his program, illustrating how they've positively impacted lives within his community. SYNOPSIS:Following the enthusiastic feedback from Philip's inaugural appearance on the podcast with his episode "Embodied Intelligence: Wholeness, Sensitivity, and the Pelvic Bowl," we knew we had to bring him back! If you haven't listened to his episode yet, we highly recommend you do! In this recorded version of our live Q&A event, step into the world of the body's intelligence – delve deep into the intricacies of embodiment where our audience had the opportunity to interact directly with Philip and Ali. Enjoy a grounding meditation to start it off, offered up by Phlip as a unifying and grounding exercise as well as a basis for questions to arise. Some of the questions posed: How do you experience the thought or the mind of the body?Could you discuss the difference between our conventional understanding of vigilance and the vigilance of the present moment, and how we might underestimate its potential significance in our lives? What does it mean if we open ourselves to the information that's available and we think with all of our senses, not just our brain? Please talk about how you understand that. What is the fear or resistance to just turn ourselves over to the body as the medium for knowing the world?Philip, where are you mapping the body, considering the balance between conscious and unconscious processes? How can we navigate our conscious mind to avoid potential pitfalls? Can you elaborate on mastering the mind within the broader context, where the heart houses the mind?I felt comfortable and truthful when I was in my head, but descending to my heart felt like entering a dogfight. There's a constant tug of war between being present and feeling pulled away by a powerful force that insists I shouldn't be here. It's a struggle filled with violence as I try to stay grounded. While there's relief in being in my body, it feels temporary, like I can't stay for long. How can I navigate this internal conflict and find a sense of home within myself? What can you say of the differences or advantages of spending time relating with people living from their head and those who are living from a greater sense of  wholeness and embodiment? How do we be with others from that perspective?I'm curious about your perspective on the phenomenon of projection. After spending time with someone, I often find myself experiencing emotions that I don't believe are my own. For instance, if I'm with someone who appears sad, I might leave the interaction feeling sad myself. This seems to blur the line between feeling and thinking, as I'm left questioning why I'm experiencing certain emotions. How do you understand and navigate this process of projection? How do you approach or reconcile this heightened awareness of the Earth's pain as you become more connected to your body and the Earth itself?Regarding the concept of wholeness, groundedness, and centeredness. During the exercise, as we delved deeper towards the pelvic bowl, there was a profound sense of resonance and silence that felt ancient and powerful. Can you speak to the significance of this resonance and the profound silence experienced in that moment, where it felt like one unified body rather than individual bodiesTo be an angel to the podcast, click here: To read more about the podcast, click here: MORE ALI MEZEY:Website:  https://www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films: FOR MORE PHILIP SHEPHERD: https://embodiedpresent.comBIO: Philip Shepherd is recognized as a leader in the global embodiment movement. We've provided a stand-alone version of the mediation for those of you who want to use it on a regular basis. This meditation offers a practice to explore the body's intelligence and challenge cultural beliefs about the supremacy of the mind over the body. By focusing on our centre of awareness, and connecting with the fluidity of the body's inner ocean, the meditation guides participants to center themselves first in the head, then in the heart, in the tanden and finally on the pelvic floor. Each centering allows for a unique experience and awareness of the world from that altered perspective. Participants are encouraged to soften into each experience, notice how it feels, and label it with a word to aid in remembrance. This practice offers an opportunity to ground oneself, explore different centers of awareness within the body, and attune to the world within and around them.To be an angel to the podcast, click here: To read more about the podcast, click here: MORE ALI MEZEY:Website:  https://www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films: FOR MORE PHILIP SHEPHERD: https://embodiedpresent.comBIO: Philip Shepherd is recognized as a leader in the global embodiment movement. Together, Ali and Philip explore countercultural aspects of embodiment, the importance of challenging societal norms, and the need to advocate for a shift towards present-centered awareness.Central to the conversation is the profound impact of the pelvic bowl, a core element of Philip's teachings. Drawing inspiration from cultures that value the body differently, Philip highlights the concept of Hara in Japanese Noh theater. He traces the historical shift in Western culture from the belly as the thinking center to the current emphasis on the head, revealing a narrative of mistrust in the body.Sensitivity emerges as a core theme of the conversation, which Philip positions as the foundation of intelligence. Ali and Philip delve into the subtleties of staying “dropped in” to the pelvic floor, stressing the gentle and patient approach required for restoring sensitivity, especially in individuals who have experienced trauma. Throughout the episode, the exploration of embodiment, cultural shifts, and the profound connection between the body and the world converges into a call to action. The duo inspires listeners to nurture sensitivity, embrace radical wholeness, and reclaim their true intelligence, fostering the evolution of both individual and collective consciousness.EXPLORATION POINTS:Ali and Philip discuss the geography of intelligence and the significance of the pelvic bowl as the base of experiencing our wholeness.Philip traces the d/evolution of Western culture from valuing the belly as the center to the current emphasis on the head and mistrust of the body. They discuss sensitivity as the foundation of intelligence and explore the nuances of restoring sensitivity, particularly in trauma survivors.Philip unpacks the fallacy of independence, and vividly describes the self as being in constant felt-relationship with the world. The conversation ultimately advocates that we recognize and learn to live from our full intelligence as a key to cultural evolution. FOR MORE PHILIP SHEPHERD:BIO: Philip Shepherd is recognized as a leader in the global embodiment movement. He is the creator of The Embodied Present Process™ (TEPP), which provides both potent insights into how our culture desensitizes the body, and a series of over 150 practices to help people renew their sensitivity to the world and reclaim their calm, centred presence in it. He shares TEPP worldwide through in-person workshops and Facilitators Trainings, and has articulated the need for a new, more embodied way of being in two books: Radical Wholeness and New Self, New World. Both books identify the causes, perils and challenges of our culture's disembodiment. Philip's personal path to embodiment includes a two-year journey as a teenager, during which he traveled alone by bicycle through Europe, the Middle East, Iran, India and Japan. He has also studied classical Japanese Noh Theater; co-founded an interdisciplinary theatre company; written two internationally produced plays and a television documentary; designed and built several houses; co-founded an arts magazine called Onion; played lead roles on stages in London, New York, Chicago and Toronto; and earned a reputation as a coach, both with individual clients seeking a deeper experience of embodiment, and for corporate clients seeking to improve their presentation skills. It's Halloween! What better time to talk about FEAR!!!??? Many think fear is the great motivator, but it can also be the great debilitator.  Fear prevents lawyers from "going for it" at sentencing and making the extraordinary ask on behalf of their clients.  Fear also prevents those clients from communicating their own truth on the big day.   Therefore, helping us get Set For Sentencing is Prof. Heidi K. Brown, author of “Untangling Fear in Lawyering”.  She's here to tell us how to let go of fear and help our clients do the same.  Prof. Brown teaches legal writing at New York Law School, she's an acclaimed author, speaker, avid boxer and rabid U2 fan.   IN THIS EPISODE:   Prof. Brown's 4-step process for "untangling fear"; Understanding "somatic intelligence" how our bodies react to fear; Tips for physically preparing for a stressful interaction (like a court appearance); Tips for helping client's prepare for stressful moments in their case; How the “sweet science” of boxing can save your soul; The connection between fear and creativity; Lawyer wellness; How fear impacts non-verbal communication.   LINKS:   https://www.theflourishinglawyer.org/ Heidi K. What happens when we allow ourselves to learn to dance with the deep, gritty, dirty parts of ourselves? What does it mean to claim that we are artists of our own lives? How do we work with the sensations of our bodies to honor the full range of our humanity? In this deeply electric conversation, my guest is Madison Nees. I met Madison when Madison gave a rich, powerful talk about cultivating a relationship of inquiry and curiosity with the body - and I instantly knew I wanted to work with Madison. Our conversation is centered around Madison's practice and upcoming offering, Katabasis. We discussed what it means to be an artist, the connection between creation and destruction, how somatics are innate to us as human beings, and how diving into our inner underworld can help us find our own leadership. We also spoke about what ancestors meant to Madison and how Madison's ancestral practice has been shifting. Madison's reflections are poignant and deeply rooted in both Madison's personal and professional practices. The spaces Madison holds reflect a sincere commitment to the non-expert model. They inspire participants to explore their own autonomy and interconnection. I'm honored to share this space and this conversation with Madison. Here's Madison's bio:Madison Nees is a human, counselor, artist, and guide. My practice focuses on the intersection of ecology, ritual and somatics. I have worked in the addiction and trauma treatment industry since 2015. My own journey includes healing from substance use, anorexia nervosa, loss of culture and self. When I began my journey, I did not understand that the pull to somatics was a call of my ancestors. I was being pulled to heal all the things my mother could not and ultimately lost her life avoiding. I was being pulled to feel the things my Grandmother had no language for.My body knew the language however, and it spoke in illness, pains, aches and rage. It also spoke the language of held grief and aloneness. During this process, I discovered gifts hidden beneath these repressed emotions. These gifts were the sensations. The gifts were the rivers of grief leading me home to myself. They were also the intuition and creativity of my lineage. I always tried to “do” something with the emotions but my healing progressed the more I simply sat with them. Instead of trying to push them away, I wondered what would happen if I let them grow. They grew into my practice today. You can sign up for Madison's newsletter on Madison's website, and follow Madison's work on Instagram @ritual_body.  Check out Madison's exciting new six-month journey, Katabasis, which will begin on Sep 18, 2022. You can set up a call with Madison if you're curious here. Madison will also be hosting a group ritual on Thursday, Aug 18, 2022 called Pleasure is Holy. Join me and Britten LaRue in a year-long astrological learning container, Astrology as Praxis! Our curriculum explores various portals to approaching and integrating astrology into our lives - as a practice for unlocking creativity, questioning consensus reality, and remembering our participation in the cosmic body. We begin our journey on Sep 10, 2022, and registration will open on Aug 26-28, 2022.This podcast is hosted, produced, and edited by Jonathan Koe. Theme music is also composed by me! In the professional world, interactions take place predominantly on the verbal and intellectual level. An assumption underlying this circumstance seems to be that language and intellectual exchange is somehow objective and universal while physical or emotional exchange is not. The notion of Somatic Intelligence suggests that even subtle physical exchange can serve as a much more direct tool to communicate and to identify unconscious behaviours, patterns, and projections affecting verbal discourse. In this roundtable we want to discuss ideas around the supposed objectivity of language and how insights from body work and movement can help establish a more complex, truthful, and clear exchange and understanding within a group. Naturally, the session will begin with a handful of playful physical exercises to illustrate this argument and to create a common point of departure.

“MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE THINKING TOO MUCH AND FEELING ENOUGH.” There is a certain art that I feel had been lost over the years in this country, and you may have noticed it too. It’s the art of seduction. Let me make one thing clear, when I say seduction I don’t mean unwanted flirting. I don’t mean trying to manipulate someone. True seduction is a lore more than that. Seduction is about selflessly making other people feel good about themselves. Their bodies, their personalities, and everything about them. It’s also about being aware of your own body. Owning it, being proud of it, and listening to it. In America we spend so much time on our phones, we’ve lost that seduction between each other. This is a topic that my guest today, Chen Lizra, is an expert on. Chen Lizra had a wildly successful Ted Talk on the power of seduction. She’s also an award winning entrepreneur, best-selling author, and a professional dancer. She learned all about the power of seduction while living in Cuba, where she was deeply inspired by the culture of body confidence there. She was able to see how people were able to really connect with each other, lift each other up, and make a true connection with their bodies. As a result, she has developed a powerful method of teaching body-awareness called somatic intelligence. I was fascinated during this conversation as she explained (and demonstrated) these principles and how they impact our relationships, our opportunities, and our self-confidence. Learn all about the power of seduction in our everyday lives, on Episode 628. Some Questions I Ask: In your Ted Talk you mention children are taught in America to be more closed off, is that right? (5:20) What career were you in before this? (9:10) How long were you an animator for? (11:12) When did your vision come together? (21:51) How long were you in Cuba? (25:03) What happens when we rediscover our natural sensuality? (26:48) How do you use seduction without crossing people’s boundaries? (35:16) How do we know if we’ve disconnected from our body? (45:04) What’s the difference between sexuality and sensuality? (49:42) How do we cultivate charm? (51:44) How do we balance masculinity and femininity? (59:38) Are you in a relationship now? (1:06:24) In This Episode You Will Learn: The common misconception about seduction (7:35) What Chen decided to do after her awakening (10:24) How she learned about seduction in Cuba (18:12) What Cuba has in their culture that allowed her to free herself from trauma (22:41) When and why we started to lose the connection with our bodies (25:16) How having elegance calms nerves (30:12) How men can connect more without crossing boundaries (41:47) How we can learn to listen to our bodies (45:58) How a man be more sensual to attract a female partner (50:47) What Chen has to say to people that feel vulnerability and sensuality is weakness (56:18) How her arm injury was a result of not opening up emotionally (1:07:42) Plus much, much more

Leaders Of Transformation | Leadership Development | Conscious Business | Global Transformation

How do we connect to our true nature? Chen Lizra is a TED Speaker, award winning social entrepreneur, Somatic Intelligence life coach, best-selling author and professional dancer. At the age of 20, Chen embarked on a quest for inner healing that spanned many continents and countries. Along the way, she discovered unique tools and insights that she later developed into the Power of Somatic Intelligence. Today, Chen uses her proprietary methodology to help people come back to their true nature. She specializes in transforming people's lives by changing behavioral patterns for the better, through bodywork and experiencing. She offers Somatic Intelligence workshops, one on one coaching sessions, training programs and keynote speeches, in order to cause deep transformation within individuals and organizations. In our conversation with Chen, she shares her personal transformation story and how the 5 elements of the Power of Somatic Intelligence helped her heal the childhood hurts that plagued her and return to her true nature. We explore body language, the magic of Cuba, the art of femininity, and the power of emotional intelligence through the body (Somatic Intelligence). Chen further describes how these insights and tools have impacted her clients' relationships and overall enjoyment of life, as well as their ability to lead and be more accurate in their decisions. Whether you are looking to lead more effectively, connect with yourself and others more deeply, or you simply desire to live life more fully, Chen will give you the practical understanding you need to experience it in reality. Key Takeaways 1) Somatic intelligence is emotional intelligence through the body, which helps us connect to our true nature. 2) There are 5 elements of Somatic Intelligence – Elegance, Intention, Tempo, Sabrosura and Mystery. Each are connected to a different aspect of our nature. See image for details. 3) When we hear something, we don't get it as much as when we feel it through the body. 4) There has been a shift in culture, where now women in leadership can be in their full power and soft at the same time. This is one of the most powerful states for a woman to be. 5) If a man is a gentleman, he will not take something forcefully from a woman. 6) A woman's edge in business is their communication skills and collaboration. 7) If you're not enjoying yourself, you're missing life as you are living it. Somatic Intelligence innovator and expert Chen Lizra knows that there is something missing in a culture that is addicted to the "pace of the race," as she calls it, spending too much time in our heads and not enough time in our bodies.  Why is this important? Well, to live a fulfilled life, Chen offers, we need to balance the drive we have for success in the material realm, with fulfillment in other realms. The body is a concrete, experiential tool for connecting to these other realms - connections that are all too often lost in our race to the top.  That's not all - Chen teaches us that if we learn to move and experience our bodies in certain ways, we can actually deliberately release endorphins, dopamine and oxytocin, the endogenous feel-good chemicals of the body.  This puts the power back into our own hands, to experience pleasure, happiness, and contentment with the most convenient tool we have access to - our own bodies.  And best of all - connecting to ourselves in this way also helps us connect more deeply with others. How many of us are feeling alone in this modern world? Too many!!  Just some of what we talk about in this podcast includes:  - How body image is formed and why it is absolutely critical to understand those key moments when our keystone beliefs about ourselves were formed.  - The role of a loving family and home in the development of positive body image and confidence in youths.  - What's pride got to do with it? How can families instill a healthy sense of pride from an early age, creating a sense of confidence that is not based on external factors and instead radiates from within?  - What can we learn from other cultures about women's body image when it's healthy, self-validating and not informed by media and advertising?  - Some simple practices that can get us starting every day full of excitement, joy and inspiration for life.  - Other tips for feeling embodied and empowered! .... And so much more!! You won't want to miss this episode with the soulful, full-of-life Chen Lizra. Let some of her exuberance and zest rub off on you! The body holds the key to your freedom. Unlike the spirit that can travel anywhere anytime, the mind which travels to the past and to the future, the body is always in the now.
