Neera Tanden — president and CEO of the Center for American Progress and a longtime Democratic policy hand — joins the Chuck Toddcast for an unusually candid reckoning with where the party went wrong and what it actually needs to do next. Tanden doesn't soften the verdict: Democrats' one job in 2024 was to keep Trump out of office, and they failed, in part because the establishment let the Biden campaign go on far too long and has consequently lost credibility it hasn't earned back. She argues that in an era where every election is close, Democrats shouldn't be satisfied chasing narrow wins — the actual goal should be a decisive Electoral College victory built around a genuine 60% coalition, especially now that even longtime Trump supporters are starting to break away. Tanden is refreshingly specific on policy: she defends incrementalism as the proven Democratic playbook (the ACA and Biden's Medicare drug price negotiations both succeeded that way, while Medicare for All keeps stalling because people are fundamentally change-averse), argues entrenched Washington interests can block even a clear majority's will, and wants Democrats to build their economic message explicitly around working-class anxieties. They discuss the sharp moral case for the estate tax while cautioning that a wealth tax is nearly impossible to administer fairly year to year and would almost certainly be struck down by this Supreme Court. The conversation turns to the internal Democratic civil war and the road to 2026 and beyond. Tanden argues there's no rise of the DSA without Trump's return, frames the Michigan Senate primary as the real petri-dish test for the left, and is blunt that Democrats in swing states need to remember they're in swing states. She calls for a real, honest autopsy of 2024, and lays out her vision for a Democratic trifecta in 2027: pass bills that directly address the cost of living, investigate the administration's corruption and recognize that Trump's entire contract with his base rests on the promise that he can never lose. With almost 100 days until the midterms, Chuck Todd delivers a data-driven check-in on a midterm race that's barely moved in months — except in one crucial direction: Trump's approval went permanently underwater on Liberation Day and has been steadily eroding ever since. He walks through the map in granular detail: Democrats are heavy favorites for the House, likely picking up 15-20 seats even after redistricting wars ultimately cut in Republicans' favor. On the Senate side, Democrats have had the better year, with the map expanding to make Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska genuinely gettable in a wave election, and forcing the GOP to spend big just to hold Texas. He notes presidential approval and even more so approval within a president's own party serving as the two biggest predictors of midterm outcomes. He warns that if the war further tanks the global economy, ordinary Americans will feel it directly, making Trump's own behavior the single biggest wildcard of the entire cycle. He then pivots to the newly passed Protect College Sports Act, walking through why nearly every stakeholder except the SEC and Big Ten support it, why it functions like a de facto collective bargaining agreement without an actual union. He closes with a trio of sharp items: the year's measles outbreak has already surpassed all of 2025's cases combined, with Chuck arguing nobody bears more responsibility for undermining the vaccine than RFK Jr.; Zohran Mamdani calling Netanyahu a war criminal while conceding he has no authority to arrest him, a comment that risks complicating the affordability-focused, "get shit done" movement Mamdani has actually been building; and a notable Oregon lawsuit challenging closed primaries on First Amendment grounds, arguing that voting shouldn't require joining a private club and that independents shouldn't be locked out of the process. Then, Neera Tanden — president and CEO of the Center for American Progress and a longtime Democratic policy hand — joins the Chuck Toddcast for an unusually candid reckoning with where the party went wrong and what it actually needs to do next. Tanden doesn't soften the verdict: Democrats' one job in 2024 was to keep Trump out of office, and they failed, in part because the establishment let the Biden campaign go on far too long and has consequently lost credibility it hasn't earned back. Finally, he presents his ToddCast Top 5 list of governor’s seats most likely to flip in the midterms, and answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment. The Washington Roundtable digs into the stunning collapse of Graham Platner's Senate campaign in Maine, and what it means for the Democratic Party's performance in the upcoming midterms. The hosts are joined by Neera Tanden, the president and C.E.O. of the Center for American Progress and a former adviser to President Joe Biden. The panel grapples with the pressing question of how the Party might resolve some of its ideological divisions and position itself to attract voters looking for an alternative to Donald Trump. Across the board, Americans are seeking a break from the status quo, Tanden argues—regardless of where a given candidate falls on the political spectrum. “People want action,” she says. “It's not ideological as much as people are hungry for ideas.” This week's reading: “Graham Platner's Point of No Return,” by Jon Allsop “Michigan Is the Next Big Test for the Democratic Party,” by Jason Zengerle “Trump and NATO Court Erdoğan, Turkey's Strongman,” by Ishaan Tharoor “How Political Is This Supreme Court?,” by Isaac Chotiner Tune in to The Political Scene wherever you get your podcasts. In the name of consumer protection, a slew of U.S. federal agencies are working to make it easier for Americans to click the unsubscribe button for unwanted memberships and recurring payment services. A broad new government initiative, dubbed “Time Is Money,” includes a rollout of new regulations and the promise of more for industries spanning from healthcare and fitness memberships to media subscriptions. “The administration is cracking down on all the ways that companies, through paperwork, hold times, and general aggravation waste people's money and waste people's time and really hold onto their money,” Neera Tanden, White House domestic policy adviser, told reporters in advance of the announcement. “Essentially in all of these practices, companies are delaying services to you or really trying to make it so difficult for you to cancel the service that they get to hold onto your money for longer and longer,” Tanden said. “These seemingly small inconveniences don't happen by accident—they have huge financial consequences.” Efforts being rolled out include a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) inquiry into whether to impose requirements on communications companies that would make it as easy to cancel a subscription or service as it was to sign up for one. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in March 2023 initiated a “click to cancel” rulemaking requiring companies to let customers end subscriptions as easily as they started them. The government already has launched several initiatives aimed at improving the consumer experience. In June, the Justice Department, referred by the FTC, filed a lawsuit against software maker Adobe and two of its executives, Maninder Sawhney and David Wadhwani, for allegedly pushing consumers toward the firm's “annual paid monthly” subscription without properly disclosing that canceling the plan in the first year could cost hundreds of dollars. Dana Rao, Adobe's general counsel, said in an emailed statement that Adobe disagrees with the lawsuit's characterization of its business and “we will refute the FTC's claims in court.” “The early termination fees equate to minimal impact to our revenue, accounting for less than half a percent of our total revenue globally, but is an important part of our ability to offer customers a choice in plans that balance cost and commitment,” Rao said. SYNOPSIS:Following the enthusiastic feedback from Philip's inaugural appearance on the podcast with his episode "Embodied Intelligence: Wholeness, Sensitivity, and the Pelvic Bowl," we knew we had to bring him back! If you haven't listened to his episode yet, we highly recommend you do! In this recorded version of our live Q&A event, step into the world of the body's intelligence – delve deep into the intricacies of embodiment where our audience had the opportunity to interact directly with Philip and Ali. Enjoy a grounding meditation to start it off, offered up by Phlip as a unifying and grounding exercise as well as a basis for questions to arise. Some of the questions posed: How do you experience the thought or the mind of the body?Could you discuss the difference between our conventional understanding of vigilance and the vigilance of the present moment, and how we might underestimate its potential significance in our lives? What does it mean if we open ourselves to the information that's available and we think with all of our senses, not just our brain? Please talk about how you understand that. What is the fear or resistance to just turn ourselves over to the body as the medium for knowing the world?Philip, where are you mapping the body, considering the balance between conscious and unconscious processes? How can we navigate our conscious mind to avoid potential pitfalls? Can you elaborate on mastering the mind within the broader context, where the heart houses the mind?I felt comfortable and truthful when I was in my head, but descending to my heart felt like entering a dogfight. There's a constant tug of war between being present and feeling pulled away by a powerful force that insists I shouldn't be here. It's a struggle filled with violence as I try to stay grounded. While there's relief in being in my body, it feels temporary, like I can't stay for long. How can I navigate this internal conflict and find a sense of home within myself? What can you say of the differences or advantages of spending time relating with people living from their head and those who are living from a greater sense of wholeness and embodiment? How do we be with others from that perspective?I'm curious about your perspective on the phenomenon of projection. After spending time with someone, I often find myself experiencing emotions that I don't believe are my own. For instance, if I'm with someone who appears sad, I might leave the interaction feeling sad myself. This seems to blur the line between feeling and thinking, as I'm left questioning why I'm experiencing certain emotions. How do you understand and navigate this process of projection? How do you approach or reconcile this heightened awareness of the Earth's pain as you become more connected to your body and the Earth itself?Regarding the concept of wholeness, groundedness, and centeredness. During the exercise, as we delved deeper towards the pelvic bowl, there was a profound sense of resonance and silence that felt ancient and powerful. Can you speak to the significance of this resonance and the profound silence experienced in that moment, where it felt like one unified body rather than individual bodiesTo be an angel to the podcast, click here: To read more about the podcast, click here: MORE ALI MEZEY:Website: https://www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films: FOR MORE PHILIP SHEPHERD: https://embodiedpresent.comBIO: Philip Shepherd is recognized as a leader in the global embodiment movement. Enjoy a profound meditation gifted by Philip Shepherd at the beginning of our recent live Q&A event as a grounding exercise and basis for profound state-shifts through the geography of the body. We've provided a stand-alone version of the mediation for those of you who want to use it on a regular basis. This meditation offers a practice to explore the body's intelligence and challenge cultural beliefs about the supremacy of the mind over the body. By focusing on our centre of awareness, and connecting with the fluidity of the body's inner ocean, the meditation guides participants to center themselves first in the head, then in the heart, in the tanden and finally on the pelvic floor. Each centering allows for a unique experience and awareness of the world from that altered perspective. Participants are encouraged to soften into each experience, notice how it feels, and label it with a word to aid in remembrance. This practice offers an opportunity to ground oneself, explore different centers of awareness within the body, and attune to the world within and around them.To be an angel to the podcast, click here: To read more about the podcast, click here: MORE ALI MEZEY:Website: https://www.alimezey.comPersonal Geometry® and the Magic of Mat Work Course information:Transgenerational Healing Films: FOR MORE PHILIP SHEPHERD: https://embodiedpresent.comBIO: Philip Shepherd is recognized as a leader in the global embodiment movement.

A run-of-the-mill, one-day news story about a billionaire holding a city hostage over a sports team and a new stadium buried the lede on the dark underbelly of Native American relations with the U.S. government. New York State agreed to finance a significant chunk of the $1.4 billion stadium for the Buffalo Bills, an NFL team owned by a billionaire worth 5.5x that amount. The Healthy + Happy Podcast Episode 16: Breathe On this episode of the Healthy + Happy Podcast, Tanden and Dr. Slade discuss how healthy breathing and proper movement benefit our health in many aspects, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually—it's about much more than just fitness! Many of us might be aware that breathing can help reduce emotional pain (anxiety, etc), but did you know it can also help with physical pain? It might seem strange, since breathing is one of the most natural things that we do, but many of us have been breathing incorrectly for the majority of our lives. Breathing correctly can help us be stronger and happier! So how do you know how to breathe correctly? Tanden Bell Degrees/Certifications: B.S. Physical Education and Human Performance ACSM Exercise Physiologist Russian Kettlebell Certification Level 1 Neuro-Kinetic Therapy Level 3 A life-long love of play, combined with the ailments of aging, has lead Tanden on a quest for pain-free movement. This quest has not only taught him how to play longer, but how to help others do the same. Teaching others how to move and live with less pain has become a fun and rewarding career for Tanden. It has also led him down many courses of study, including advanced anatomy, biomechanics, motor programing, and a deeper understanding of psychology and motivation. In Tanden's words, “I will always consider myself a student.”
Welcome to 'women have it harder in politics' Part Deux. Nominees from Neera Tanden to former Gov. Jennifer Granholm have their qualifications questioned and their histories judged in ways that just don't match up with their male colleagues. UPDATE: Ms. Tanden has withdrawn her nomination to head the OMB.
