Tilray to buy 4 breweries from MolsonCoors.Big beer news this week (or is it Big Beer news?) with weed warrior Tilray buying 4 breweries from MolsonCoors. Included in that sale is our beloved Terrapin Beer Co. If my math is right this will bring 15 breweries under the Tilray brand, plus some distilleries and cideries. Per Brewbound, the move will make them the #4 largest craft brewery on the Brewers Association's ranking. On the flip side of that coin, Monster Beverage is doing terrible. They posted a nearly 32% sales decline YoY. As we've seen with their huge layoffs and changes at Cigar City, they haven't shown much skill in being brewery owners.Tough news for hop farmers in the Pacific Northwest as they announce a loss of acreage this year due to the declining craft beer market. They took a 12% loss last year as well. The domino effect of craft beer impacts so many more people and businesses than just brewers and breweries. Some fun news for our friends at Athletic Brewing as they announced a partnership with English football club Arsenal to be their official non-alcoholic beer partner, the first for Arsenal. Good for them.In the realm of Bro Science we discuss how ABV impacts hydration and what you can do to mitigate the negative effects. We won't stand by what we say though, Bro.Hope you have a great week and drink some great beers! Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Featuring: Terrapin Beer Co. and Canada Malting Co. Ryes and shine! We're exploring the intricacies of Rye Malt for brewers and distillers on this episode. (4:12) First, we're joined by Brian “Spike” Buckowski, Founder and VP of Brewing Development at Terrapin Beer Co. in Athens, Georgia. Spike tells us about their very first beer - a Rye Pale Ale, and the history of how it was discontinued, then brought back as a fan favorite. We discuss finding the perfect rye malt percentage and other challenges of brewing with rye. (26:54) Then, our resident-distilling expert, Geoff Fischer, stops by to address what rye looks like in the distilling world. What is American Rye Whiskey and what are the differences of distilling with rye versus other types of grains? (42:50) Finally, we close it out with Mac Remington, Canada Malting Co.'s Production Supervisor. From a maltster's insights, Mac shares how malting rye contrasts from barley throughout the malting process as well as the best varieties for rye malt.
Madame Web is Sony's latest vapid entry in their ever burgeoning catalogue of films centering around the villains of Spider-Man. And, yes, like Morbius, that hero is nowhere to be seen. In fact, since the film largely takes place in 2003, he hasn't even been born yet. Our heroine here is Cassandra Webb, an EMT born with powers she has yet to realize she's been given. The how and the why of that truly need to be seen to be believed. Webb (the eventual Madame Web) can see glimpses of the future. In doing so, she makes it her business to save three young girls who will most certainly die without her help. Anyway, the central antagonist, Ezekiel Sims, goes on this quest for vengeance for reasons; Webb's most effective form of combatting Sims—outside of clairvoyance, of course—is attempted vehicular homicide; and you will leave the theater wondering what circle of hell Sony has propelled you into. Madame Web is as bad as advertised. It is a film that need not exist. An origin of an origin, the three future Spider-Women don't even wear their costumes in the actual timeline of the film. Those appear solely in glimpses of a future we'll never see. I'd say the 12% is justified, but even that was probably too kind. Now, sit back, drown your sorrows with a Depth Perception Imperial IPA from Terrapin Beer Co., and watch out for that Pepsi sign! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are table dancing to Toxic at a roadside diner! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Her web connects them all! (00:00) Lingering Questions – Why does Sony continue to foist these turds upon us? (33:40) The "Great Power Will Come" Trivia Challenge – Chumpzilla challenges the field to trivia about the movie. (56:45) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We continue Super-Heroic Flops with a sequel that couldn't match its predecessor's success, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom! A couple weeks ago we took our fine selves down to Atlantic Station in beautiful Atlanta, GA for the Georgia Craft Brewers Fest. The event is sponsored by our friends at the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild and showcases over 60 of our state's awesome breweries. One of the highlights of the festival is the collaboration competition. Brewers team up with each other, or maybe with a local restaurant or charity, and brew a collaboration beer to be served at the event and judged by a panel of esteemed judges. In that spirit we focused on collaboration chat in this episode and, since one of the collabs was a malt liquor, we decided to chat a bit on that as well. In the first half of the show we sit down with John Doss and Jay Harris from Southern Brewing Co. who partnered up with Akademia Brewing for Eagle Fang malt liquor. We talk about why you collab, what you get out of it, and veer a bit into lager talk. (Spoiler: We'll be doing a deep dive lager episode in the future.)Next up we talk with Craig Mycoskie from Round Trip Brewing and Matt Curling from Variant Brewing Co. We've known Craig for a couple of years and we've known Matt from way back in our homebrewing days. We've brewed together a handful of times and went up against each other in homebrew comps. Matt's brewery is now one of the best in the state. Grab some Variant if you get the chance. We carry on with collab talk with Craig and Matt and get into some talk on Pilsner variations, overcoming language barriers, Rauch IPAs and Craig's brewing background.Free Spirit Charitable CollaborationOf all the collabs we talked about on the show, this one is the most special. The beer is brewed in memory of Britney Fox Watts as a collaboration between Small Dreams Foundation and Terrapin Beer Co. You should definitely head to the website and learn more. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Leah Keggi is the Marketing Director at Blue Ridge Spirits & Wine Marketing, a sales agency for premium wines and spirits. Leah has over eight years of experience in the marketing field, including as the Marketing Director for Terrapin Beer Co. Her expertise lies in both social media and brand strategy that she leverages to run effective and creative digital marketing campaigns. She received her degree in marketing communications from Wake Forest University. In this episode… There's a lot that goes into marketing alcohol. Whether it's promotions or packaging or social media, alcohol requires a lot of creative strategy with a low guarantee for success. The next trend in wine and spirits is hard to predict and many brands come and go in just a couple of years. Marketing is not only about getting the beverage in front of people but keeping it in their minds afterward. So, what's the best way to market your drink? Many people claim to know the answer, but Leah Keggi has the pedigree to back it up. She has over eight years in marketing for alcohol, and even longer in general marketing. She has extensive knowledge in social media and brand strategies that she utilizes for multiple popular wine and spirits brands. If anyone knows how to market a beverage creatively and effectively, it's Leah. Darren Fox sits down with Leah Keggi, the Marketing Director at Blue Ridge Spirits & Wine Marketing, to learn the right way to market your alcoholic beverage. They talk about the fundamental differences between traditional marketing and marketing for premium spirits. They also dive into specific topics such as international campaigns, the best channels for your brand, and the three-tier system. Hear it all on this episode of the Pitcher This! podcast! 39rndyr2

Walking Tall is a remake of 1973 film starring Joe Don Baker. It's also "inspired" by a real-life sheriff, Buford Pusser, who patrolled the crime-laden streets of McNairy County, Tennessee, with a crudely fashioned cudgel. That's essentially the movie. The Rock walks softly and carries a big stick. As a conceit, that sounds like it could be pretty badass. Walking Tall is just executed poorly. It's hokey and feels far more like straight-to-DVD fare than an action showcase for its star. Worse, the fisticuffs and fireworks just can't sustain the silly plot that surround them. There's an entire shootout where the Rock's paramour just wears her bra because ... reasons. It's a dumb movie, folks. So, not shockingly, critics hated it. It's 26% on Rotten Tomatoes with 126 reviews. At the box office, it bombed, as well. It earned just over $57 million on a budget of $46. That's a far cry from the $40 million the 1973 version grossed on a cost of just $500,000. There's no amount of corny courtroom speeches to redeem that. So sit back, club open a Luau Krunkles POG IPA from Terrapin Beer Co. with a 4x4, and don't roll those loaded dice! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Mayor McCheese are administering street justice with our Pusser Sticks! UpCountry Brewing's John Cochran has a long brewing history UpCountry Brewing is one of Asheville's newer breweries but it's not the first brewing rodeo for founder John Cochran. Cochran got his start at Marthasville Brewing, one of Georgia's first and, unfortunately, short lived. Way back in the dark ages (the mid-1990s) there wasn't much craft beer to be had in Georgia. The US was feeling the effects of the 90s brewery bust and this little southern state was behind the times to begin with. After departing Marthasville Cochran worked at Atlanta Brewing Co. where he met "Spike" Buckowski, the pair would eventually partner to open Terrapin Beer Co. Many years were spent working around the harsh Georgia alcohol laws to build Terrapin into one of the most popular breweries in the Southeast. In 2016 MillerCoors took a "majority stake" in Terrapin. Buckowski chose to stay with the company while Cochran departed to start UpCountry. This week, we talk about those early days of Georgia beer, the importance of diversifying your beverage portfolio, pickle beers, working with distributors vs. self-distribution, and a few other odds and ends. Episode 211 - Hangovers Are A Witch We have pretty refined tastes here at The Buzzed Kill Podcast. We love classical music, or a night out at the ballet. Do we speak French? Oui Oui. However, we're also known to cut loose from time to time. Don't be surprised if you find us having a little too much wine every once in a while, and sure you might catch us crawling through weirdly lit rooms filled with bundles of unwound wire for no good reason. It's not even below us to occasionally summon the corporeal form of death itself and explode a bunch of naked people's heads. What can we say, we like to party. In this episode, Matt talks to Spike Buckowski, Head brewer at Terrapin Beer Company. Terrapin Beer Co. began as a daydream between founders John Cochran and Spike Buckowski, who met while working for a microbrewery in Atlanta. The two recognized that they had something to contribute to the brewing industry in the Southeast, and began crafting recipes. In April of 2002, Rye Pale Ale made its first appearance in Athens, GA. Only a short six months later, Rye made it to Denver for GABF, where John and Spike took home a Gold Medal for the beer in the American Pale Ale Category.
