Teaching teachers how to teach yoga is a massive responsibility. (How many times am I going to write the word “teach” in this intro???) Many people who listen to this podcast either already are, or are hoping to be a teacher of teachers. I get asked all the time for advice on creating and leading a teacher training. I have created a very successful speciality training, The Science of the Private Lesson, and a big part of my business is mentoring yoga teachers. I have supported teachers in writing their own 200 hour teacher training, but I have never actually created or led my own foundational 200 hour teacher training. So to have this conversation I asked my Yoga Mama, and the ultimate Teacher of Teachers Cyndi Lee, to join me and walk us through how to create and lead a teacher training. In this episode you'll hear: how to decide what to cover in a teacher training since yoga is so vast and expansive what is most important to consider when you first start to write the manual or syllabus for your teacher training how to teach sequencing and class planning to future yoga teachers what Cyndi thinks about marketing a teacher training as a way to "deepen your practice" without an intention to teach how teacher trainers can stimulate creativity and confidence in their learners Learn More From Cyndi: Website SUBSTACK: Drip, Drip, Drip Instagram Facebook

During pregnancy, the physical changes come in fast, and sometimes, furious! A great way to tune into these changes and create more body awareness is through “yoga asanas”, which are movements and poses from the ancient Indian tradition that promote physical & mental wellbeing. Prenatal yoga is becoming more popular these days as research and science points to the immense benefits of healthy and safe movements for birthing individuals. Not only can it help pregnant people throughout each trimester, but it can also assist in a smoother birth as well!In the show today, we have Deb Flashenberg, the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. Deb advocates for how yoga poses can help create more balance in the body so that birth flows better and there is less obstruction for the baby. She talks about “mock contractions” in her yoga classes that help her clients prepare for 60-seconds of physical and mental challenge during labor and delivery.Along with being a prenatal yoga teacher, Deb is also a labor support doula, Lamaze childbirth educator, mother of two and self proclaimed "birth and anatomy geek”. Deb received her first vinyasa yoga certification with Shiva Rea and then added to her education by completing the OM Yoga advance yoga teacher training with Cyndi Lee. After the challenging birth of her first child, Deb became incredibly interested in pelvic health and has since earned her Pelvic Floor Yoga Certification with Leslie Howard. For the past 7 years, Deb has also greatly enjoyed being the host of the podcast, Yoga | Birth | Babies, where she speaks with some of the world's leading experts in pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenthood. Currently, Deb is knee deep in Dr. Sarah Duvall's Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist program and pursuing the Spinning Babies Parent Educator certification and loving every minute of it! Introduced to the basic principles of Hatha Yoga by his father while growing up in Little Italy, it wasn't until his mid-twenties that Frank Mauro began exploring asana postures and the philosophical underpinnings of the practice. In the 1990s, New York was in its heady day with studios opening across the city and giving birth to a new generation of conscious and creative yoga teachers, including a young Frank Mauro. His curiosity and interest in yoga ultimately led Frank to his first teacher training with the internationally recognized Sivananda Yoga Center and then eventually with many world-renowned teachers including Richard Freeman, Rodney Yee, Eric Schiffmann, Judith Lasater, and later in Manhattan with Cyndi Lee at the Om Yoga Center. Frank currently teaches at NY Loves Yoga Studio in the upper West Side of Manhattan. https://www.nylovesyoga.com.

Have the women in your audience ever wondered what they could accomplish with the time they spend worrying about their body or appearance? In a society overwhelmed with messages of how women should be and appear, it's easy for them to internalize these ideas and become their own harshest critics. It's time for a change. It's time to stop squashing women into painfully tight “should-be” boxes and celebrate their bodies for what they are—divine tools to reach our highest aspirations and experience the full fabulousness of life. In this book, women find a practical program for healing body image dissatisfaction using a unique blend of wisdom—from yoga to Buddhism and Taoism to shamanism and more. It's time for women to stop wasting time and energy hating their bodies and to start moving toward a life that celebrates their body's unique strengths and capabilities for experiencing health, happiness, and true radiance. In an interview on your program Erica can discuss: The challenges she has faced with her own body image issues How body image shapes mental health and wellness The power of healthy body image on physical fitness and strength The benefits of these sustainable lessons for maintaining a healthy body image What the biggest obstacles are in women's minds around loving their bodies Some of the tools she speaks about in this book How she brings her knowledge down to a practical level so every woman can understand and much more! “Your Body, Your Best Friend is the ultimate guide for how to feel amazing in your own skin. She makes radical acceptance accessible.” —Tasha Eichenseher, former brand director at Yoga Journal, and yoga teacher “This book is everything! For a start, Erica reminds us that we are not alone in our body confusion. She teaches us why this has happened with smarts and clarity that allow us to feel smart, too. Then she empowers us through meditations, journaling, and sensory awakenings that help us find our way home again—home to our own, good bodies that are just the right size to hold all the love and pain and beauty of real life. I'm giving this book to all my women friends.” —Cyndi Lee, founder of, OM Yoga, and author of Yoga Body, Buddha Mind, and May I Be Happy

Susan”Lip” Orem began practicing yoga when the thrill of bench aerobics was gone. Her first teachers were Sharon Gannon, Dana Flynn and Cyndi Lee. Her checkered past as a dancer in Las Vegas revues, Off Broadway actress, Ringling Brothers clown and sign language interpreter left her no choice but to teach yoga. She was too old to be a cowgirl or an astronaut. She was first certified by Cyndi Lee before there was an OM Yoga. She has been a student of Rodney Yee since 1996 and continues to be inspired by his teaching. She is honored to be part of the teaching staff of Yoga Shanti NY. Here in NYC Genny Kapuler , Rodney Yee and Carrie Owerko keep Lip’s feet steady on the path. The most influential teachers have been all the students willing to take this trip with her. Susan “Lip” is grateful every day that what she does is what she loves. Learn more at heathenhillyoga.net

As Krisitn and I casually talked during the breaks of Prenatal Yoga Center's Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training, (which she was enrolled in) I started to realized how our personal paths mirrored one another and even intertwined at times. I loved hearing her open and honest experience of her two very different births and was delighted to “talk shop” about yoga “back in the day!” I discovered we even studied with the same teacher, Cyndi Lee at the former OM Yoga Center. This episode of Yoga|Birth|Babiescaptures a fun, honest, and open chat between two yogis, mothers and teachers. Kristen talks about the evolution of her yoga teaching and practice that has spanned more then two decades and how she manages life and 3 kids under 4 years old! Please enjoy! In this episode of “Yoga | Birth | Babies,” I take off my interviewer hat and become the guest speaker! For the past 17 years I have had the joy and honor of leading group yoga classes as well as teacher trainings. In this podcast, I breakdown the principles from which I teach and train other teachers. For those who are new to teaching or just students who want to better understand my methodology, I hope you enjoy! In this episode, I cover: The importance of seeing your students! Learning from your best teachers, your students. The pros and cons of demonstrating. Know your demographic: who you are teaching and how they best learn. Don’t be afraid to correct and adjust a student Hand on adjustments- does everyone need to be adjusted? Know why you are touching a student – your hands should be giving information as to how to stabilize or go deeper in a pose. Don’t ignore the student who needs the most attention because you are overwhelmed by their poses. My personal pet peeve- massage or little creepy adjustments. Teach! Don’t just recite memorized cues – or shout out poses. Intelligent sequencing – how do poses relate to one another. Using music- it should add to the underlying flow and drive of the rhythm About Deb : Deb is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory of Music with a degree in Musical Theater. She has spent most of her life performing and was introduced to yoga through a choreographer in 1997. After several years as a yoga student, she decided to continue her education and became certified as a Bikram Yoga instructor. In 2001 Deb headed out to Seattle to study with renowned prenatal yoga teacher Colette Crawford, R.N., at the Seattle Holistic Center. Deb has received certification for Vinyasa Yoga from Shiva Rea as well as completed the OM Yoga advanced teacher training with Cyndi Lee in 2004. Deb has also studied the Maternal Fitness Method with Julie Tupler. Deb currently studies with Cyndi Lee, Genevieve Kapular, and Carrie Owerko. After being witness to several “typical” hospital births, Deb felt it was important to move beyond the yoga room and be present in the birthing room. In 2003, Deb attended her first birth as a DONA certified labor support doula. In that short period of time, Deb has attended about 100 births. She is continuously in awe of the beauty and brilliance of birth. In 2006, Deb received her certification as a Lamaze® Certified Childbirth Educator. In September of 2007, Deb completed a Midwife Assistant Program with Ina May Gaskin, Pamela Hunt and many of the other Farm Midwives at The Farm Midwifery Center in Tennessee. Drawing on her experience as a prenatal yoga teacher, labor support doula, childbirth educator and mother, Deb looks to establish a safe, effective and empowering class for pregnancy and beyond. In April 2016, Deb had the honor of being a presenter at the Yoga Journal Live New York Conference. Deb is the proud (and tired!) mother of her son Shay and daughter Sage. I am so excited about today's episode because I get to bring you the wisdom of the founder of my own teaching lineage (OM Yoga) , Cyndi Lee! Cyndi is the first female Western yoga teacher to fully integrate yoga asana and Tibetan Buddhism in her practice and teaching. In 1998, she founded OM Yoga Center in NYC, and that is where I took my first YTT in 2005. Cyndi recently became a formally trained Buddhist Chaplain under the guidance of Roshi Joan Halifax and much of her work there centers around using yoga and meditation as resiliency practices. We talked about what it's like to find refuge in our bodies, no matter the circumstances, and how we can offer that kind of teaching to our students. In this episode we also talked about: how some teaching principles are universal, no matter what you are teaching Cyndi gives some advice for teachers who want to deepen their teaching skills what it takes to have confidence in your teaching having a growth mindset vs a fixed mindset taking refuge in a body that has a lot of pain Trainings, Retreats and Online Workshops with Cyndi: Cyndi's WebsiteVery Special Teachers Retreat in New MexicoOnline Restorative Teacher TrainingMeditation Teacher Training coming summer 2018

After spending seven years in the Bay Area dancing and teaching dance, Margi began to practice yoga. The union of movement with spirituality piqued her curiosity. From the Bay area, Margi moved to New York City to attend New York University's TISCH, earning her MFA in Dance and Choreography. For a respite from the fierce dance world, she practiced yoga in the smoky incense of Jivamukti, offering her a quiet within the bustle. Over time it became clear that she was much happier on her thin blue yoga mat than in the mirrored dance studio. She soon discovered Cyndi Lee’s OM Yoga Center, where Iyengar alignment meshed with vinyasa flow and Buddhist principles, and attended a teacher training in 2001. Raghu is joined once again by musician, author, and teacher, David Nichtern. David chats with Raghu about his new book, “Awakening from the Daydream,” which reimagines the ancient Buddhist parables of the Wheel of Life and Samsara. David describes a few of the realms of Samsara and where we see them playing out in our world today. He also gives us practices to overcome these obstacles to our inner balance. This conversation about Buddhism is not one to be missed. Everyone can learn something, as David relates the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in a way that is accessible to anyone. “In each of these realms, the peace that you are talking about has been mistaken. You think the peace is, ‘ If I keep competing and keep getting to the top, then I will have peace.’ In The Hungry Ghost realm,’ If I keep consuming if I keep craving things that act will bring me peace.’ But it is exactly that act which keeps you from having peace.” – David Nichtern,Awakening from the Daydream: Reimagining the Buddha’s Wheel of Life More About David David Nichtern is a senior teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. "Devotion is part of our nature, we love to be involved, we love to connect. This is the deepest connection a heart can make, this connection to deep devotion and unconditional love…” -Krishna Das Krishna Das and David Nichtern sit down for an interactive discussion on devotion, tapping into their experiences with both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, respectively. When it comes to devotion these two spiritual paths overlap is in the Vajrayana form, or tantric style of Buddhism, when a teacher appears in the form of a master/guru. This is seen to be extremely special as a focal point in practice, because they have accomplished what you yourself would like to accomplish. For even in the three refuges of Buddhism—the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha—the guru is considered the forth refuge. Krishna Das recounts how life-changing it was to experience the unconditional love that radiated from his guru, Neem Karoli Baba aka Maharaji, in India, and how slowly through just hanging out, Maharaji's presence opened their hearts. For some spiritual seekers who have had this physical experience of the guru, it’s an inspiration to see the possibility of someone exhibiting that kind of love, clarity, and timelessness, in person. David recounts his own experiences while pursuing the Buddhist path under the tutelage of Chogyam Trumpa Rinpoche, and the incredible lineage he's a part via his own personal practice. “The ring of devotion hitting the hook of the guru, the link you have to that being, in our tradition, is practice, therefore it is very, very important…the practice is the connection for us to individually continue to connect in that way, when we don’t have the luxury of knowing that kind of being in person…” At the end of this podcast, there’s a Q&A covering the following topics: -Does the spiritual path need a stage of darkness in order to attain a level of depth? -Not feeling an unconditional love connection with spiritual teacher/lineage. -The role devotion has played in Krishna Das’ singing. -Has Krishna Das found a way to love everyone, the way Neem Karoli Baba does? -The role of grace in Krishna Das’ spiritual life and how it has helped him to cultivate devotion.
