Spanish-American singer-songwriter Victoria Canal first began using her voice as a way to process grief… and she gained some serious fans in the process. Coldplay’s Chris Martin is quoted as saying, “one of the best songs ever written” about Canal’s exploration of the topic — “swan song.” She offers a wider range of subject matter on her freshly released album Slowly, It Dawns, and her band’s sharp spin on Adult Contemporary pop provides an excellent vessel for unpacking relationship dynamics. Hear it all play out for yourself by grabbing today's free download of “Talk.”

Happy 4th of July! Happy Freedom Day! There are many things that keep us from being free. Some are out of our control, yet many are actually in our control. We often get in the way of freedom, both for us as well as for others. Her newest EP, Victoria, released on August 28th, represents a giant step forward for Canal as a writer and producer, and the resulting tracks convey a maturity far beyond her 22 years. In March 2020, just as the world was closing under the advancing cloud of Covid 19, I spoke to a handful of musician friends from around the world to hear how they were doing and to explore some of the pressing questions around the shutdown and the arts. One year later, I check in with (almost) all of them to hear what the last year has been like for them, what were the challenges and opportunities of the first Covid year, and how they see the future. Italian singer Gege Telesforo, saxophonist John Ellis, bassist Joe Dart (sort of), guitarist Adam Levy, trombonist Ryan Keberle, artist manager Andrew Leib, singer songwriter Victoria Canal, artist and advocate Ari Herstand, guitarist Lage Lund, mud trudging songwriter Joy Dragland and funk magician Charlie Hunter (in his way) all weigh in. Thanks for listening. If you enjoyed it, please leave a review on iTunes and consider supporting the podcast on Patreon and following the podcast on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

My guest today is a my good friend Victoria Canal. She is a 22-year-old artist, singer, songwriter, and now producer based all over the world. She was based in Los Angeles, but when the coronavirus shutdown hit, she moved to Amsterdam where her parents live.Victoria and I discuss how she's been handling the last six months. This was supposed to be her breakout year. She had two massive tours scheduled. She had just finished one supporting the band Tall Heights. Then she leveled up to an even bigger tour supporting Leslie Odom Jr. She also just came out with her EP, 'Victoria,' and as you can imagine, the release strategy changed quite a bit. So we talked about that. I had Victoria's manager, Andrew Leib, on the show a few months back. You can get the other side of Victoria's career. He talks about why he wanted to sign Victoria and what it has been like working her so far. Victoria Canal is a 21-year old Spanish-American, LGBTQ, differently-abled, singer-songwriter with a massively powerful message of diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Everything about Victoria is completely exceptional - from her life experience to her demeanor and her talent - and at the same time maybe her greatest gift is her empathic, generous spirit. She’s just a good listener and incredibly seems to make people comfortable to be who they are. She released an EP in 2016 called Into The Pull and a series of singles since then that have racked up millions of Spotify streams. She’s set to release her next EP later year but already has put out two singles from the project. The first, “Drama” came out late in 2019, and the second called “Second” came out last week. Her writing is direct, catchy and compelling. Talking to Victoria, one gets the sense that she spent so much time as an outsider in her life - moving from country to country, school to school, with a different kind of childhood, and a different kind of body, and a different kind of talent - that the outside became a kind of inside for her. And she has a way of making you feel like an insider when you’re around her. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast https://www.victoriacanal.com/

Victoria Canal is one of those amazing 20 year olds with a very old soul. You hear that immediately in her voice. She was born to sing and be a songwriter and producer, there's no doubt in her mind. Some people find their purpose early in life, and yet in her youth, Victoria has fresh wisdom for us all. She's already touched so many people, so deeply, and she's still doing her 10,000 hours of learning how to perform on big stages. Catch her while you can! https://www.victoriacanal.com/home https://www.instagram.com/victoriacanal
In 2000, Michael Franti & Spearhead released their seminal "Stay Human" album, reflecting on the unjust nature of the death penalty among other themes to make sense of our common humanity in juxtaposition to near constant violations of human rights. Now, he and the band have returned with "Stay Human Vol. II." The writing on the album—which is co-produced by Franti alongside Ben Simonetti, Niko Moon, Kevin Bard and others—was heavily influenced by Franti’s work on his new award-winning self-directed documentary, "Stay Human." Franti took the BUILD stage to discuss the new LP and play a few songs for the audience. After you watch the BUILD, listen to the album on Apple Music.
Victoria Canal is with us on today's show. She is currently on tour with Michael Franti. Victoria was born in without her right forearm due to amniotic band syndrome. Noone or nothing can stop Victoria. Her sheer will and determination will prove that her musical talent as a songwriter, singer and keyboardist will carry her to the top and stay there for years to come. Victoria has lived all around the world, including Dubai, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Amsterdam. She's a mix of Cuban and American descent but refers to herself as Spanish-American because Spain is where she was raised most of her life. She began playing piano as early as 6 years old and now, at 20 she's a force to be reckoned with. She's been on tour with Michael Franti and was generous to give us a live interview. So we're on the bus chatting it up. I just love what she says about life: "In life what I found to be crucial is to have direction and it doesn't matter how many times you change direction just as long as you're not floating. So if you know you're going somewhere and if you don't know where you're going, you're not going to go anywhere at all, but if you decide where to go, even if it takes you unexpected ways and you end up somewhere else, at least you went somewhere!" Today Victoria discusses: How she started taking piano lessons at age 6 with her grandma. How she has lived in over 100 places around the globe. How she decided to go to school online rather than a brick and mortar school. Manifestation and the reality of it. Her method of writing her songs and music. And so much more, so get your headphones out and check out Victoria Canal's interview. Here's a bit of footage from her live show at the Jannus Live: Victoria Live in Action Want to play keyboards?
