When most people outside of Europe think of diesel performance, Cummins, Chev, or Ford probably come to mind. As this week's Tuned In podcast guest tells us, however, there's a lot more to the performance diesel world than the big 6BTs and 6.0 Powerstrokes.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inOriginally hailing from France and now based in Nashville, Tennesse, Grégoire Blachon has built his business, Boxeer, off the back of Volkswagen Audi Group's impressive family of TDi four-cylinder diesel engines. Boxeer's journey began with TDi conversion packages for VW's Vanagon overland vehicles, and having always had an interest in motorsport, Grégoire always felt the urge to start pushing these stout engines in a motorsport environment — specifically hill climbing. Podcast host Andre Simon and Grégoire get stuck into exactly what makes these little TDis so good, and how he gets the absolute most out of them utilising obscure standalone ECUs, triple compound turbo induction, in-cylinder combustion pressure monitoring, and more. Grégoire goes on to break down the TDi-powered build he's best known for — his tube-frame Beetle hillclimber — which he's used in the last few years to come tantalisingly close to clinching the diesel win at Pikes Peak. After breaking the Bug down, Grégoire talks Andre through his new build, which he hopes will absolutely smash the diesel record at this month's 100th running of the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. Based on a Radical chassis, the new car runs the same triple turbo TDi setup (with some extra added spice) and the same Porsche PDK gearbox, but with a considerable drop in weight and aerodynamic drag, as well as far superior handling and braking. The European diesel world isn't one that we've discussed much — if at all — on this podcast, so this conversation with Grégoire is a really interesting look at what makes these platforms tick, and how builders like Boxeer are getting serious performance out of them.

Volkswagen has taken the unusual step of going after the firm's former board members involved in the diesel emissions scandal. Several key figures, led by former chief executive Martin Winterkorn, will pay millions of euros to Volkswagen to settle claims around their involvement in the emissions cheating scheme. Volkswagen's insurer will take the biggest hit, over €270 million. In an aviation first, a Boeing MQ – 25 Stingray drone has operated in an air-to-air refuelling role, offloading fuel to a manned F/A-18 Hornet. The buddy tanking procedure used standard Navy equipment and the transfer was made at what Boeing calls “operationally relevant altitudes and speeds”. The on-again, off-again Keystone XL pipeline project, intended to carry Canadian oil sands derived crude to American refineries, has been officially cancelled by the Canadian firm spearheading the project. The formal cancellation comes after the January revocation of Pres. Biden's presidential permit, reversing Pres. Trump's prior reversal of Pres. Obama's 2016 cancellation. Is Keystone dead? It would appear so, but the project has been through this before. Cooperatives in North Carolina are getting $700,000 for charging as part of the VW Diesel-gate settlement. Small-town America needs more projects like this but not all state agencies see it that way.

Some Garage Hours are put together in breweries, others in garages, a few at gun stores, some more in the studio, but when was the last time you got to hear a broadcast from a covert black-ops and first-names-only three-letter training range in backcountry San Diego? Yeah, try to contain your 2A jealousy. The Garage Hour goons - with sometime cohorts and full-time shooters Matt Klier of Active Shooter Defense School (as well as ASDPink) and Smog Mike - made their way to this excellent spot in San Diego's remarkably rural backcountry for a day of tactical thinking, paramilitary designation, handgun drills and reaching out with the long guns. Grab the podcast - Hostus Maximus Justin Fort needed something to do when he ran out of bullets - and have yourself some. Fighting the distraction of endless range time and chats with the shooters that be, Justin also delves into a few ditties about ballistics (the little he knows), traffic and newbie drivers for fun and liability, bike lanes and the new victim status that is pedal power, local off-roading, lone-wolf terrorism's asymmetrical threat to America. Then the lethal amigos track back to gearhead - VWs ongoing battle with the auto workers' union and the Kardashian administration, the wonder that is efficient diesel power (don't let the fools on the news trick you - VW's getting the Obama treatment), and why Volvo people are a different kind of people. In our last episode, “Sleep,” senior editor Andrew Del Colle reviewed an Audi diesel car. Shortly after posting that episode, news broke of Volkswagen’s cheating during diesel fuel emissions tests. In this special episode Andrew returns to discuss the VW scandal and its implications.
Ryan Turner has been focused on the VW industry for over 13 years. His obsession started with the purchase a '72 VW Beetle in high school and has since spiraled out of control and consumed all aspects his life. Three years ago, he made the big leap: He quit his job as a government contractor to start his own business, Krauthouse Motorsports. With no formal training and little investment capitol, he has since expanded his portfolio to include a VW-themed t-shirt sales site and has most recently acquiredVWDiesel.net, an online community of enthusiast committed to all things Volkswagen diesel related. With the support of his wife, he is working to build and expand the site to include a blog, podcast, custom builds, and more to help fuel VW enthusiasts worldwide.
