Click here to read the episode show notes. You will also find an AI-generated transcript in the show notes.  00:00 Introduction 01:05 Why are we discussing Indigenous films at Sundance? 14:11 Fancy Dance is our favourite Indigenous film at Sundance 14:54 Murder in Big Horn 31:00 Twice Colonized 41:13 Bad Press 49:26 The trend of an Indigenous filmmaker and a settler filmmaker co-directing 57:58 Indigenous films at Sundance set outside of North America: Heroic, Sorcery, Against the Tide More about the episode In this episode, we discuss Indigenous Films at Sundance: films directed or co-directed by Indigenous people as well as a couple of films about Indigenous people but directed by settlers. We kick off with our favourite Indigenous film at the festival, Fancy Dance, about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) which we already went deep on in episode 3. We then dig into the disappointing documentary miniseries Murder in Big Horn (dir. Razelle Benally who is Oglala Lakota/Diné and Matthew Galkin), which looks at MMIWG in the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Nations. The Sundance miniseries Murder in Big Horn is told through the lens of an Indigenous investigative journalist looking into the case and uses the tropes of true crime. We talk about the often thoughtful but inchoate Twice Colonized, which was directed by a settler The film Twice Colonized follows the wonderful Inuk lawyer Aaju Peter (who also appears in Angry Inuk). Next, we talk briefly about another disappointing Sundance US Indigenous film, a documentary co-directed by an Indigenous director, Bad Press (dir. Muscogee filmmaker Rebecca Landsberry-Baker and Joe Peeler), about the Mvskoke Media in the Muscogee Creek Nation navigating gaining and then losing and then trying to regain their status as free press. We also touch briefly on Fox Maxy's New Frontiers experimental film. Finally, we briefly discuss Heroic, a World Dramatic Competition film about an Indigenous character and mention the other World Cinema films that are about (but not made by) Indigenous people. Highly-regarded Australian actor Richard Roxburgh joins the latest episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast. To say the recording of this Podcast episode was a bit of fun would be an understatement. It's not every day you get to shoot the breeze with an actor of Richard Roxburgh's calibre. That was the case for me while I was attending CinefestOZ Film Festival in Busselton, Western Australia which Richard was also attending as the Jury Chair, responsible alongside other jury members for awarding the festival's $100,000 Film Prize for Best Film. I had spoken to Richard during an Opening Night Red Carpet interview, and we also shared a bit of banter at one or two afterparties. But I really wasn't expecting to get Richard on an episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast while I was at the festival. On the Thursday morning I received a phone call saying that Richard was at my hotel and available for a half hour interview. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity, even though I was totally unprepared as far as questions go. Regardless, I managed to get quite a lot out Richard during our interview. We discussed topics from his early beginnings as an actor, working with the likes of Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible II, his adoration for Baz Luhrmann, his desire to work with Warwick Thornton, his latest role in the Stan series Bali 2002, and whether he will ever direct again following his experiences on Romulus, My Father. Do I really need to introduce Richard here? Probably not, but it's worth mentioning that Richard is one of Australian busiest and most respected actors, having graced our screens in television shows like Blue Murder, Hawke and of course Rake, and in films like Oscar and Lucinda, Mission: Impossible II, Moulin Rouge!, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Van Helsing, Looking for Grace, Hacksaw Ridge and H is for Happiness. It's worth mentioning that this interview was recorded in a pub. The venue was open to the public and there was a lot of activity happening in the background with CinefestOZ events, coffee being poured and drinks being served so please excuse the background noise. Anyway… enjoy.

United States v Billie Holiday + Demi Lovato - Dancing with the Devil We review these two queer popstar survival stories and hype three surviving cinema events. Static Vision have announced their film festival Dreamscapes: A Static Vision Film Festivaland it will run from May 14th to 16th. Satoshi Kon's Paprika looks like a highlight and low key Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street is going to give the festival an exciting throwback. New Jersey DJ UNiiQU3 is opening the festival. Personally I'm most excited for Blue Honda Civic by Jussie Eerola which calls itself a minimalist road movie about emotional landscapes. I could talk about this lineup all day - In The Air Tonight as well, and Sun Dog! Cinema Reborn is happening from April 29th till May 2nd and we highly recommend you check out the section Films From the CENTRAL AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL MEDIA ASSOCIATION (CAAMA) featuring 4 films from CAMMA. Since launching in Alice Springs in 1988 CAAMA has become the largest Indigenous production house in Australia and basically the pre-eminent video unit of Indigenous filmmaking in Australian Aboriginal media. The films being shown are MY COLOUR, YOUR KIND (1998 | Dir. Danielle MacLean), WILLABERTA JACK (2007 | Dir. David Tranter), EIGHT LADIES (2010 | Dir. Dena Curtis), GREEN BUSH  (2005 | Dir. Warwick Thornton).   Garden Reflexxx: 4 will be at Pink Flamingo Cinema in Marrickville on May 7. Huge, considered and pumped up line-up featuring Stelly G and Chiara Garrett-Saladrau and their experience of the first ever Sneaker Category in the Southern Hemisphere at the recent West Ball. Australia's most important video artist Destiny Deacon, the much-loved LOVEDAVID, our queen, mother of the masses and Darwin's new hero Bhenji Ra, cross-country heartthrob Grace Barr, the inventor of inflatable art, world renowned performance and fabric artist Evelyn Roth, a new film from Sydney's hottest filmmaker E. O. Gill starring people you saw across the room at First Draft Athena Thebus and Chloe Candlelyte who, as Xnorpowka will also be debuting a new film: White Dress and finally, to cap it all off there will be a meditative trip into the underworld performed by the newest, most macabre sound artist around Weyon inside a giant inflatable chicken brought to Sydney by Evelyn Roth in person.  May 7, Pink Flamingo Cinema, doors at 7, films at 8, tickets $10 - $15 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When I started out covering Australian cinema and interviewing those behind the films that I love, I had one name at the top of my list as to who I'd love to interview - Warwick Thornton. The director of the highly acclaimed Samson & Delilah, and the cinematographer behind films like Radiance and The Sapphires, Warwick Thornton is one of Australia's most talented filmmakers. With the arrival of his latest, (and arguably one of the great Australian films around), film Sweet Country, I was able to tick off that 'wishlist interview' and sit down with the man himself for a chat about what goes into his craft.
