Chicago's Connor Hudziak had never driven a real truck before. However, the young man loved playing "American Truck Simulator" after school and work. Connor never dreamed his passion for the computer game would help him win a trip to Western Star's Star Nation customer appreciation event in Bend, Oregon -- or that the professional truckers there would change his life forever.
In this episode of Set Lusting Bruce, host Jesse Jackson welcomes new guest Kathy, a 61-year-old school teacher from Northeastern Nevada. Kathy shares her unique journey of discovering Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band relatively late in life, thanks to Stevie Van Zant's Teach Rock initiative. Raised in a military family and having moved multiple times during her childhood, Kathy opens up about her connection to music, specifically how Bruce's songs like 'The River' and 'No Surrender' resonate deeply with her personal experiences. The conversation also delves into Kathy's background in education, her passion for teaching, and the transformative power of integrating music and arts into the classroom. Tune in to hear how Kathy found her 'church' in Bruce's music and how she continues to find joy and community in the Springsteen fandom. 00:00 Introduction and Patreon Shoutouts 01:19 Meet Kathy: A Journey from Utah to Nevada 03:05 Military Family Background 05:53 Growing Up with Music and Books 12:41 Discovering Bruce Springsteen 23:30 The Impact of COVID and Living for Today 28:01 The Crisis in Education 29:06 The Importance of Arts in Education 29:27 Personal Stories and Reflections 33:48 Favorite Bruce Springsteen Songs 35:40 The Impact of Stevie Van Zant 37:12 Connecting Through Music and Podcasts 43:56 Western Stars and Personal Memories 46:17 Final Thoughts and Farewell Learn more about your ad choices. It's back to the Dobson literature this episode and today we are talking about psychology and therapy! Jake and Brooke read through (an updated version of) Dobson's second-ever book. We see again how Dobson is not only a bad person, but he's also lazy and wrong as he takes us through his greatest "hits" of obviously-fake-stories. Wanna see Dobson 'in his lane'? That's what this book is.References:Coopersmith, S. (1967). The Antecedents of Self-Esteem. W. H. Freeman and Company.Dr. Becky Kennedy: https://www.goodinside.com/about/Dunn, J. (2018). For every story of difficulty expanding beyond a single truck with leased owner-operators, there's probably more than one tale of success. The latter's been the story the last several years for owner-operator Josh Rickards, whose Rickards Transportation Services business as of late November was up to a total of five owners leased on in addition to himself, still also behind the wheel much of the time. In something of a growth mode now for a time, Rickards has come to specialize in part in the entertainment industry, supporting concert tours and often enough working in tandem with larger entities for the larger tours. His owner-operator journey started back in his boyhood, with a particular mentor in an owner-operator he's long been happy to call his Uncle in Michael Paul Visbeek, out of Northern California and since passed on. Rickards tells the tale of a kid's inspiration grown in a Kenworth W9 with a Cat and an 18 speed, then a detour as a young man through hip-hop music promotion and marketing, and on to true trucking success. What's Rickards looking forward to for the new year? He just bought a brand-new Western Star you'll hear him talk about in this Overdrive Radio episode, and he's bringing on two more owner-operators as he continues on the goal of sustainable growth. As he told me last week, asked about any "New Year's Resolutions" for the business in 2025, “it's not just about growing in numbers,” he said. Anybody with good credit can buy a truck. For Rickards, his laser focus is on what he calls “the real challenge, … maintaining that growth while staying profitable.” Hear much more from him in the podcast episode, and find his fleet at the company website -- https://rickardsinc.com -- where he promotes values and goals of creating opportunity for leased owners through honesty and transparency in agreements, of sustainable growth and with a principal focus on entertainment hauling, of building a true team and, when he's partnered with bigger entities on larger-scale tours, being that integral part of the team that is any touring production. "We put ourselves out there as the Navy Seals, the Marines, of touring," he said. "We're a smaller outfit, but when you call us in you're getting the special forces that are coming in." As mentioned in the podcast, a promotional video DAT made in which Rickards discusses load board use tactics, strategy, today a small part of his business but more sizable in past: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcEwxBarEbE

Independent owner-operator Debbie Desiderato, long hauling with her authority as Walkabout Transport, probably needs no introduction to regular Overdrive readers. Her insight around customer relationships and so much more has featured in Overdrive multiple times through the years, and last year she was one of our Truckers of the Month in the Trucker of the Year program: https://www.overdriveonline.com/15541324 At the top of the podcast, Desiderato describes the seven years that have elapsed since she first met photographer/author Anne-Marie Michel. The owner-operator's one of 40 female truck drivers and owner-operators in America interviewed for the Britain-based Michel's “Sisters of the Road” book. Long in the making, as owner-operator Desiderato made clear, yet it's been out a couple of years now, and making something of a splash around the country right now with a photo-exhibit trailer being pulled behind Desiderato's Western Star. She's run with the exhibit clear across the country from an origin point in San Francisco to start Women's History Month on the way to the Mid-American Trucking Show, coming up here shortly, March 21-23 in Louisville, Kentucky. Preview MATS happenings, and access coverage in the aftermath, via this collection: https://www.overdriveonline.com/t/4372607 Overdrive Radio spoke with Debbie about the experience thus far on the tour, which to date has offered up no shortage of opportunity to school the uninitiated on the ins and outs, the struggles and triumphs, of truck drivers of all stripes. Plenty share-the-road talk, too. "The blind spots," Desiderato offered. "and how I've got a hood on this truck. They can see now if they're by my passenger steer tire how I couldn't see them if they're driving a small car. They got a big education." She was referring mostly to 100s of international and otherwise trucking-uninitiated attendees of FotoFest in Houston, where her Western Star was parked up with the exhibit trailer for plenty public interaction through Wednesday, March 13, this week. She's due to arrive in Louisville March 18 for MATS, with stops along the way in Arkansas at Uber Freight headquarters and Saturday, March 16, at the Idella Hansen Petro in Little Rock. All in all, she notes, the tour and her inclusion in the "Sisters of the Road" book has been an opportunity to sit right at the intersection between the business and work of trucking, and the wider U.S. and world cultures. On this episode of The Construction Record Podcast™, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with World of Concrete senior show manager Kevin Archibald about the history of the conference, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year in Las Vegas, as well as the many features of this year's event. Archibald said in 1974 the original conference was started by a small group of industry professionals with 71 exhibitors over 75,000 sq ft. and the event will tip its hat to the past with a “walk down memory lane” even as the current conference covers the breadth of the Las Vegas Convention Center with exhibits, educational sessions, large-scale product demos and a series of competitions. Archibald said a conference mainstay is the Bricklayer 500, also known as the “Superbowl of Concrete,” and there will be other features such as Get Tough challenge where attendees can drive Western Star trucks around obstacles and rock carvers from around the world situated throughout the conference practicing their craft. He added sustainability and aerated concrete are two of the major trends the conference sees both in exhibits on the show floor and educational interest, along with an emphasis on safety, noise reduction and the growing importance of data in driving company decisions. We'll be on the ground at the World of Concrete from Jan. 23 to Jan 25., so be sure to tune into The Construction Record and watch our Daily Commercial News, Journal of Commerce and Construction Record Linkedin sites along with the DCN, JOC and Construction Record Podcast Twitter accounts, as well as daily Reels on our Instagram feed. Adam Scott Aukerman squeak out an ep on Springo's nineteenth studio album, Western Stars—an album heavily influenced by 1970s SoCal pop music. But first, the Scotts gab about novelizations of movies, complimentary restaurant chips, and weird beards.
Blake Morgan, CEO and Director of Western Star Resources (CSE: WSR), joins me for an introduction to this gold, silver, copper exploration company operating in British Columbia and the Yukon, in Canada. This is a fairly new company that just started trading in February of last year, and has groundwork planned for 3 different 100% owned exploration properties and drilling planned for 1 and possibly 2 of the projects this year Blake outlines the work that exploration team has planned for their flagship Western Star Property, following up on 8 mineral showings for gold, silver, copper, and lead over a 6km mineralized trend southeast of the Revelstoke mining district in British Columbia. After having the team hit the ground for more chip and channel samples, and then awaiting those assays, the plan is then to drill a grid of 30 holes to about 100 meters depth, for a 3,000 meter program to kick off in late April or early May. The drilling permits are already in hand. Next we discussed the Mount Anderson Project in Bennett Lake, Yukon, and focused on gold, silver, zinc, and copper where a prior operator outlined very high grade mineralization and did an IP survey revealing 9 drill target areas. The team at Western Star Resources is going to again do some of their own chip and channel samples to verify these showings, and then if the permits come back and the market cooperates, then they also plan on doing an initial drill program here later in the year after drilling the Western Star Property. We also quickly reviewed the Toad River iron ore and copper project in B.C., and that there will only be limited ground work completed on it this year, looking toward optionality on this project with other larger companies. Currently an $800,000 capital raise is underway, which will provide the funds to finish all the soil, chip, and channel sampling to further hone the exploration targets and get them drill ready at both projects. It is important to highlight the news from January 2nd, where the Company has secured a $5Million institutional equity capital facility from Crescita Capital LLC. This is the capital the Company will use and draw down and fund the majority of the exploration over a 3 year period, at their team's discretion, and in a better price environment. Another point that Blake reviews is the tight share structure the company has with over 20% management stake, a 45% stakeholding by close shareholders, leaving only a 35% retail float available for trading. If you have any questions for Blake regarding Western Star Resources, then please email me at Shad@kereport.com. Click here to learn more about Western Star Resources.
By the mid-late 1980s, when Jay Hosty was in his mid-20s, he'd been through three trucks -- a 1971 gas-powered International and then two cabovers bought used -- hauling containers for Brown Transport in and around New Orleans. He then made a move his elder container-pulling owner-operators in the Southeast told him was going to be a career killer in the out-and-back niche. It was 1987. "I never thought I'd own a new truck that soon," said Hosty, yet it was working out right -- the trade-in value on the old cabover he was pulling with, the cost of the 1987 International 9300 he was about to replace it with... "Associates Finance -- they were famous for doing commercial vehicles, they took me on in the very beginning" for the financing, he said, much to his surprise. His rate for revenue at the time, as he told: "72 cents a mile, loaded and empty." He was working with Brown and related companies with a lot of older men. They called him a kid. Owner-operators who've been around a long time may remember Brown for a kind of mascot that was the company's emblem. "They called him 'the Brownie,'" said Hosty. "He looked like a little Robin Hood or something, a little character." Those seasoned experts amongst the prior generations at Brown got one look at the kid's sharp new 9300 and "started asking me what my payments were," Hosty added -- $1,400 every month, for five years. "They said, 'You are never going to make it pulling these containers for 72 cents a mile. You're going to have to go over-the-road.'" What they meant: The young upstart owner-operator Jay Hosty would have to make that truck his life -- "to go out [OTR] and stay out," he said. His young wife wouldn't go for that, he knew, and for as much as he loved the work, he didn't want that sort of life, either. Besides, owner-operator Hosty had done the math, knew his costs back and forth, and was confident he could in fact make it work. "I can make it, and I will make it," he told himself. "And I did," he says today, telling the story as part of this week's special edition of Overdrive Radio, and proving wrong the naysayers in process. The tale showcases a quality held by many a successful owner -- willingness to think outside the box, to push the envelope to find just what's possible, for themselves. It's a quality Hosty made good on time and again throughout his 40-plus-year career at the helm of the Jaybyrd Express business he pilots behind the wheel of a Detroit Series 60-powered 2006 Western Star. That's among many reasons Hosty, we're happy to announce, is Overdrive''s Trucker of the Year and will sit at that pinnacle for the next 12 months. With a big congrats due to Hosty, we'll also invite you to put your business in the running for the 2024 award, which you can do via the form at this link: https://www.overdriveonline.com/page/toptrucker Owner-operators with up to three trucks are eligible, and if you've controlled costs and maintained revenues amidst inflation and freight-market difficulties in the last years, you're no doubt a worthy contender. Episode #088:Well folks it is Halloween and here they go again! The only holiday probably more suited for these two than this one must be April Fool's Day. For the two of them to just have one of those “normal conversations” that you hear people talk about, is highly unlikely to ever happen. So please do not hold your breath waiting for it to happen.Today once they get down to brass tactics, they are loopdy-dooping about how the look of semi-trucks have changed. They do not seem to be able to just have a conversation without going off into left field. There is talk about “The best of the best of the best, Sir”, (Men in Black) Taco Bell, Taco Tuesday, “Swing Batter Batter” (Ferris Buehler's' Day Off) and just their normal everyday goofiness. But it by no means defines their knowledge or abilities. Especially in the Trucking Industry! They go through the evolution of the aerodynamics of both the truck and the trailer. When it comes to the looks of the Rig, it is not necessarily the best looking, in their opinions. However, the direction that Rigs are going is definitely better for fuel economy and aerodynamics. For looks, they both seem to like those classic long flat nose Big Rigs looked. Like the Classic Freightliners, Peterbilt's, Western Star's and all the other Beautiful Rigs of the past. By past they both seem to feel that means pre-Y2K.From there they start talking about the attachments on the rear of trailers. Some of the rese arch that Janet did sounds very amusing in an accident-causing sort of way! Like large, long balloon-cones that inflate with movement and deflate when the trailer stops moving. And there lies the problem as they say. Something about dragging a Volkswagen for a few hundred miles that got caught in the balloon. Or being caught going through the tollbooths on major highways. And the discussion and comparison goes on with talk about apples and watermelons being the same as some of the Rigs out there. No matter how you stack it up, these two have their moments where they talk facts “just the facts Ma'am” (Dragnet, basically). But it is rare that they just talk numbers, usually they keep things lively, upbeat, and entertaining. And let's not get them going about the weight of electric trucks, weight, ruts in the road, and more! So, if you like this episode and have your own story to tell, then don't forget to go to Formerly known as twitter to continue the conversation!Full podcast show notes available here: https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e88Southwest Truck Driver TrainingSHIFT YOUR CAREER INTO HIGH GEARTRUCK DRIVER & CDL TRAININGLifetime job placement assistance.Individualized truck driver training.Financial aid for CDL training programs. You choose training in manual or automatic shifting trucks!! This week on Overdrive Radio, we reintroduce June's Trucker of the Month, Debbie Desiderato, in conversation with our own Overdrive News Editor Matt Cole. Cole's story about Desiderato's long trucking career is live as of earlier this week at the website: https://www.overdriveonline.com/trucker-of-the-year/article/15541324/independent-debbie-desideratos-keys-to-trucking-success Today, we'll hear parts of that in Desiderato's own words. She's built considerable value with the do-it-yourself approach to business throughout her well more than two decades as an independent owner-operator. If Debbie's name sounds familiar, that's because she's been here on the podcast before – likewise in our coproduction with PRX's Radiotopia network of the Over the Road series, which originally aired in 2020: https://www.overdriveonline.com/t/4405867 Active with the Make a Wish foundation's Mother's Day convoy events, the Real Women in Trucking advocacy group and other organizations, too, she's made a name for herself as an independent not afraid to tell it like it is -- nor to give back in the form of advice for those coming up. Tools and business processes she's built for herself through the years she readily shares with others as a familiar face at truck shows around the nation, online and elsewhere. Her designation as Trucker of the Month for June, though, is as much a testament to her perseverance through the tumult of the last two decades as an independent with authority -- she attributes a lot of her success to that do-it-yourself spirit, particularly in the mechanical realm. Her growth as owner hasn't always been easy, though, as she described the early years learning by trial and error that, depending on the destination, sometimes you've got to take your backhaul with you in the headhaul rate, as it were, among many other things of course. Through it all, you really get the sense that there's another title in Debbie Desiderato's future. Listen on to drop right in with owner-operator, mechanic, salesperson, app developer, Overdrive June Trucker of the Month and veritable author Debbie Desiderato, writing the book on trucking as an independent. As mentioned in the podcast, the story of Debbie Desiderato's return to car hauling, of a fashion, in 2020 in a hotshot as pandemic refuge: http://overdriveonline.com/14897956 Her 2017 Western Star interior's custom reno as part of the Tranfix digital brokerage's Transfix My Rig sweepstakes in 2021, conducted by "Secret Celebrity Renovations" star Jason Cameron: http://overdriveonline.com/15115013 Nominations remain open for Overdrive's 2023 Trucker of the Year award, open to owner-operators with up to three trucks via the form at this link: https://www.overdriveonline.com/page/toptrucker
The new owners of the former Western Star building explain how they've tapped into the past to shape the sites future'.
The Project Director of the Western Star and Emerald offshore wind projects in Clare and Cork has claimed the recent government policy U-turn will not negatively affect the projects. It comes as the Simply Blue group and EDF Renewables have agreed have agreed a multi-billion euro partnership to develop the projects pending merger clearance. The Western Star floating wind project hit a stumbling block last year, when Shell pulled out of the joint venture, and the future of the project has further been brought into question by the government's recent policy U-turn which prevents developers from choosing their own sites for offshore wind farms. However, Project Director of the Western Star and Emerald projects, Val Cummins is confident that planning permission will be acquired and the projects will go ahead as planned.
A natural inclination for frugality is a winning quality for most anybody in the world today, and no doubt for an owner-operator. That's one of the central qualities Jay Hosty, our Trucker of the Month for April, put dead center of his now 41-year-long history of success as an owner-operator in trucking. As Overdrive News Editor Matt Cole wrote in our profile of owner-operator Hosty last week, he got his start in trucking as an owner pulling containers around New Orleans, Louisiana, at the young age of 19 in 1981: https://www.overdriveonline.com/trucker-of-the-year/article/15383689/frugality-focus-on-costs-pays-off-for-owneroperator-jay-hosty Frugality's certainly served him well during the last year and a half's rising costs, yet it only goes so far after a couple of years' worth of getting used to $4/mile freight. The squeeze is on, coming from both sides of the profit equation. "it's hard to come back to the reality of $2/mile freight," Hosty said, and thus far in 2023 he's a bit behind in net income where he was this time last year. In part, it's the luxury of being freight-choosy at work there. He's spent more time sitting at the house in Diamondhead, Mississippi, this year, waiting on profitable loads from one of couple of nearby Landstar agents he works with regularly to take him outbound. Hosty's been leased to Landstar now for most of the last two decades, pulling today in a 2006 Western Star that replaced a 2000 model, after the truck was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, when he and wife, Katt, were living in Gulfport, Mississippi. They lost their house there, too, with the direct hit, and the comeback from that disaster is made all the more remarkable by the family the Hostys have fostered throughout their entire four decades together. We'll hear much more about that in today's edition, likewise a 2022 Western Star daycab Hosty's been sitting on for a year with plans to outfit the rig with a custom sleeper built to his needs, as he'd done with the 2000 that Katrina sent to the graveyard. That frugal nature he mentioned has kept him from moving forward with it to date, given pricing he's gotten from some of the big sleeper manufacturers. For the builders in the audience, he put out a call, too: "If there's anybody out there who can point me in a good direction of getting a custom sleeper built" without sacrificing an '"arm and a leg" on the build, as it were, he said. "I'm looking to find somebody." Hosty's Trucker of the Month designation puts him in the running or Overdrive's 2023 Trucker of the Year award. You can enter your own business or put forward another 1-3-truck owner-operator via this link: https://www.overdriveonline.com/page/toptrucker Also in the podcast: Heads-up on an online seminar upcoming on Tuesday, May 23, part of a series sponsored by the Bestpass company — it will dive into the topic of work-life balance over the road as an owner-operator, particularly in a down market like the present, and features two men who've been in those shoes over the decades. You can register to attend it live at 1 p.m. Central, May 23, via this link.. What we aim to deliver are tactics, strategies to gauge and achieve balance to improve quality of life for yourself -- and/or your operators if you're managing a small fleet. That's whether you're a one-truck owner leased to a carrier or with authority, or a small fleet owner hoping to deliver better balance to drivers and, ultimately, to yourself. The two presenters regular Overdrive Radio listeners have heard here on the podcast before: Innovative Logistics Group founder and managing director Adam Wingfield and Overdrive's 2021 Small Fleet Champ Jason Cowan, founder and leader of Silver Creek Transportation out of Henderson, Kentucky. One of the other podcasts I do is a pop culture review show with Lou @LouWSytsma and Karen @aleveria. Each week, we are watching Babylon 5 in chronological order and discussing them. We also take turns picking other movies, books or series to review. It was my turn so I picked Bruce's Western Star movie to help celebrate the podcast hitting 1000 episodes.
One of Jesse @jessejacksondFW other podcasts is Set Lusting Bruce: A Bruce Springsteen Fan Podcast. He is hitting his 1000 show in April. To help celebrate he asked Lou @LouWSytsma, Karen @aleveria to watch the 2019 film staring and co-directed by Bruce Springsteen Western Stars. The results were mixed but I think you will enjoy the conversation.
In 2019 Bruce Springsteen released his long talked about "solo" record that had been sitting around waiting for a release. That album was 'Western Stars' Listen in as I discuss this album and end up sharing a lot of stories about how this album affected me! www.apodcastandacd.com @APodcastandaCD
Tonight, we'll read “The Million Dollar Bond Robbery”, a short story written by Agatha Christie and published in 1924 as part of her “Poirot Investigates” series. In this story, a million dollars of bonds disappear from under a young man's nose and he is being held accountable. If you enjoy this episode, be sure to listen to our first Poirot story, “The Western Star” which aired in June of 2022 and “The Cheap Flat” which aired in August . By the way, a “portmanteau” has two meanings. One is the way it is used in this story- a large suitcase or trunk that opens into two equal parts. The other way is as a word that blends the sounds and combining the meanings of two others, for example motel which combines ‘motor' and ‘hotel', podcast which combines ‘iPod' with ‘broadcast' or of course, Snoozecast which contains ‘getting cozy' with bedtime. read by -N- Learn more about your ad choices. Tonight, we'll read the second half to “The Adventure of ‘The Western Star,'” a short story written by Agatha Christie, published in 1912 as part of her “Poirot Investigates” series. We read the opening half to this story last week.In the first episode, Hercule Poirot receives a visit from Miss Mary Marvell, the famous American film star on her visit to London. She has received three letters, handed to her by a Chinese man, which warn her to return her fabulous diamond jewel, the "Western Star", to where it came from – the left eye of an idol – before the next full moon. Her husband, Gregory Rolf had bought the jewel from a Chinese man in San Francisco three years ago and had given it to her. Poirot asks Mary Marvell to leave the jewel with him but she declines. She is going to stay at Yardly Chase, the home of Lord and Lady Yardly next Friday to discuss the making of a film there and Mary is determined to wear her diamond there. Next Friday happens to be the next full moon.— read by N — Listen Ad-Free on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Well, I've been holding onto this episode with the hopes that I'd be able to include a main topic, but that's still in the works. So I guess there's no logical reason to keep hanging onto all this old news. Some of it isn't all that relevant anymore, like the whole Canadian border thing and Covid news. But there's also some more relevant topics here, including all the typical stuff like recalls, more safety blitzes (not the NFL version), moving forward with both the infrastructure plan and futuristic trucks, drug and health updates, and of course, all the things our government is up to. Additionally, Scott Gunter a.k.a. Killjoy gives me a chance to drool all over his submission for the Trucker Grub segment. This time around, most of the listener feedback segment consists of new drivers wanting to join the Trucker Dump Slack group, but two long-time listeners also pipe in on mechanical woes and YouTube videos.
