Thoroughly Equipped Season 2 Episode 37 Be the Bridge Ministry has it's white bridge builders start with teaching them about their whiteness; hoping to help them learn humility and grow in racial righteousness. The Be The Bridge 101 Guide: Foundational Principals Every White Bridge Builder Needs to Know helps gives white people 4 steps to addressing their whiteness; White Identity, White Privilege, White Fragility, and White Supremacy. We have addressed the first 2 in the last episode and are going to talk about the 3 foundational principle in this one: White Fragility. We will ask questions about white fragility to help us see what's behind the idea. Topics Include: What is white fragility? What spurs it on? What cultural ideas ignite white fragility in white people? Are they ideas worth being challenged and cast aside? What are the presuppositions behind white fragility? Is teaching white people to over come white fragility a good or bad thing? Does overcoming it, as we are instructed in Be The Bridge 101, actually bring unity to God's people? White fragility and real racism How do we as Christians REALLY become humble and fight ethnic hatred and false bias? May this episode bless you and bring glory to God! REWIND: In honor of Black history month, and this year's theme of resistance, we are revisiting past conversations with guests committed to the active and everyday work of resisting racism and the false ideology of white supremacy. Anti-racism work is daily; it's a choice to embrace discomfort, the uncertainty of how folks around you will react, and a commitment to unapologetic truth telling. This week's guest, writer (founder of the blog, Some Thoughts From Your Black Friend), anti-racism activist / educator, and co-host of the Upside Down podcast, Patricia A. Taylor is on the journey. We have long admired her work, and this conversation is full of thoughtful insights, we delved into: - Patricia's journey aligning her writing with social justice and listening to the call from God to move into anti-racism work. - Why proximity to BIPOC communities doesn't absolve churches and individuals from doing the work of anti-racism. - How she embraces care for her mind, body and spirit, rooted in scripture from Jeremiah to the Psalms, and 2 Corinthians 3: 3-5. - The necessity of lament and repentance for the church as it relates to racial and social justice. - Why spiritual bypassing is dangerous, and why being vulnerable around safe people (particularly for those in BIPOC communities) about what we're feeling is a form of self care. - What Patricia hopes those in her community take away from her work: questions that guide them toward action, and keep them rooted in compassion. More about Patricia A. Taylor: Patricia Taylor is a wife, mom and California native. She believes in Jesus, truth-telling, loving all of our neighbors, and having critical conversations around racial justice with grace and honesty. Her work is rooted in anti-racism education, and she serves as the BIPOC Educator for Be The Bridge. Today we're talking about the tragic death of Tyre Nichols and the aftermath, which included riots and calls for social justice, many claiming that the killing was due to "systemic whiteness," despite the cops who killed him all being black. It's a very good thing that the officers are being held accountable, yet it's incredibly sad to see the reaction immediately shift to race. What really constitutes justice in this case? We look at how the officers involved were hired due to lowered department standards and the lie that law enforcement is rooted in white supremacy. Then, we look at Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic's win at the 2023 Australian Open. He is said to be the best tennis player in the world, but was left unable to compete in the 2022 Australian Open after he was deported because he chose to remain unvaccinated. We take a look at his big win and how much sweeter it is after he stuck to his guns. In contrast, we look at a Finnish transgender farmer turned ice skater who was allowed to skate at the European Figure Skating Championships despite being ... not good. We finish off with a look at progressivism and the destruction of beauty that comes from it. --- Timecodes: (00:57) Tyre Nichols (34:00) Novak Djokavic (28:30) Finnish "ice princess" (44:20) Progressive ugliness --- Today's Sponsors: Birch Gold — protect your future with gold. Hey friends! Chris and I have been a part of an amazing small group at our church this past year. We discussed a book called "Be The Bridge," by Latasha Morrison. In this episode, I interview my small group leaders Daniel and Tiffany Stephens about why they chose this topic for our small group and why it's important for the US church to be talking about it as well. We had some incredible discussions and made some awesome friends along the journey. Hope you will tune in and be encouraged! Thanks for listening! I believe we are in a pivotal moment in history: we are at a place where our broken systems and our cultural failings are at the forefront and it's super dang uncomfortable. Our culture has been toxic for a while and I think we've hit a point where it's showing in so many aspects of life from “health care” to education, our financial and political systems, our media - all the way to our communities and the way we interact with each other, online and offline. I know I'm not the only one that sees this and feels this. Today's episode is a little different: it's an extraction from an Instagram live I recorded a few months ago. I cannot overstate how scared I was to record this, and to even speak up in the slightest, for fear of disappointing people, for fear of losing friendships, or making people mad, even though most of what I share in this episode is not, in fact, controversial. If you've been struggling with HOW to start to heal the divide and how to reconnect with others, this is for you and these are my thoughts. If you've been wondering how you can start to speak up on ANY topic that feels “divisive” and help to BE THE BRIDGE, I see you and we NEED YOU! Show Notes: http://www.lisamichaud.com/podcast/65
That's right: Facebook decided that this episode was "inciting violence." We showed a campaign video (a very funny one) and talked about Be The Bridge and the themes of CRT that run through this organization's approach to racial reconciliation. Listen before some other platform tries to remove it!
In this episode, Host Bethaney Wilkinson interviews Sean Watkins, the Director of Training and Strategy at Be The Bridge, a faith-based nonprofit that exists to empower people and culture toward racial healing, equity, and reconciliation. In this conversation, they process the tragic anti-black, racist incident in Buffalo, NY. They also discuss the rich and emergent diversity present in Black identity, the importance of history, and of the ongoing tensions between progress and hopeless peace. About Sean: Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Sean came to the University of Texas at Austin for his education but found Jesus and a lifelong passion for ethnical and cultural diversity. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in African-American Studies and History, a Masters of Divinity, and is a PhD student in Intercultural Studies at Fuller Seminary. Welcome to The Gospel Changes Everything Podcast! In this episode, Alisha Illian teams up with Marcie Morris to tackle an important issue - false teaching. This episode will probably challenge your thinking, and it may step on your toes. Our advice? Do your best to listen (to the whole thing!) with an open mind and a teachable spirit. While the IF:Gathering is specifically discussed, this episode goes beyond simply targeting one source of false teaching. Alisha and Marcie provide a biblical basis for WHY and HOW false gospels should be called out. Additionally, you'll be encouraged to study and research for yourself. As mentioned in this episode, every Christian is empowered by the Holy Spirit and equipped through the Word of God to develop discernment regarding what we are taught. Resources mentioned in this episode: Scripture support for "naming names" when discussing false teachers/teaching: 2 Timothy 4:10 — "Demas: in love with this present world", 2 Timothy 1:15 — "Phygelus and Hermogenes (turned away)", 1 Tim 1:19-20 —"some have shipwrecked their faith among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn", 2 Tim 2:17 — "their talk will spread like gangrene — among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus", 3 John 3 — "I have written to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first..." In this episode Devin and I talk about how to find motivation, inspiration, and how to uplift yourself daily. He brings up an amazing point about how people are mirrors that reflect back to us and remind ourselves of who we are when we feel lost. God brings people into our lives who hold a piece of us that we have forgotten if we take the time to look up and around we will be reminded of ourselves and all the amazing things this life has to offer. We are all human, just being human with unique perspectives and here to help one another on this journey. Making the choice of what you focus on and seeing the beauty in opportunity. We talk about how followers are not just numbers but souls and people who are engaging with your content and how we all should take time to connect. We talk about how social media is not a measurement of your value- it's a tool to connect- not just about numbers but more about human lives/ connection. Devin shares his beautiful background about how being biracial has allowed him to be the middle ground to bring both sides together and how to meet in the middle and have conversations with people with different perspectives. He shares his experience and creates a space to share, educate, and "Be The Bridge".
Description: This episode brings together Be the Bridge founder Latasha Morrison with Pastor, Author, and thought leader Rich Villodas. Rich is the Brooklyn-born lead pastor of New Life Fellowship Church, which happens to be a large multiracial church with more than seventy-five countries represented in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, New York. In this episode, the conversations will center around the topic of Racial Reconciliation through the lens of Diversity. As our country grows more diverse it has become a reflection of the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural community groups that we call churches. Latasha's discussion with Rich will guide us through what true diversity looks like in The Body of Christ, and the intersectionality of Christianity and race here in the American Church. Description: This episode brings together Be the Bridge founder Latasha Morrison and bestselling author, evangelist, and Bible teacher Beth Moore as they talk about racial reconciliation in the Christian faith. Beth details her own experiences speaking against injustice, dealing with the backlash, and waking up to her responsibilities as a faith leader. She also gives some insight into how Christians can become bold reconcilers who move beyond a head knowledge of Christ into heart knowledge and action. Host & Executive Producer - Latasha Morrison Senior Producer - Lauren C. Brown Producer, Editor & Music By - Travon Potts Transcriber - Brittany Prescott Quotes: “The point of Bible study is to actually love Jesus and not just get a head full of knowledge. So there's got to be a collision there of heart and mind, or it doesn't mean anything.” -Beth Moore “We read the Bible through our cultural lens.” -Latasha Morrison “There was not a single time that I've been really outspoken that I would have told you that I was going back on whether or not I should say it. It would have been that I could not have kept from it. And if that's the case, then I can be at peace there.” -Beth Moore “Politics has not been my big thing. My big thing is the Church. But when it comes to Church, then I'm going to start reacting.” -Beth Moore “This Jesus thing is life to me….my bread and my meat and my drink is that I am praying so hard to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Because he has that capacity for compassion as well as just being able to spit out what is true. And one of the things that I'm always asking him for, whether it's in this exact wording or not, is that the fire on my tongue would not exceed the fire in my heart.” -Beth Moore “Our mouth cannot overshoot our heart or our duplicity is going to be exposed.” -Beth Moore LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE Podcast link: https://podlink.to/BeTheBridgeSocial handles/links: Instagram: @LatashaMorrisonTwitter: @LatashaMorrisonFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/LatashaMMorrison/Official Hashtag: #bethebridge Thank you to our sponsors! Today's episode was birthed from an idea that I had several months ago. So Cha, Lettie, Marcie, and Patricia all said yes to speaking about the power of being a Black woman and some of what we deal with on a regular basis. I wanted to utilize the month of August to talk to feature all of us together. This episode is more than I could have dreamed. They represent healing, love, courage, authenticity, and truth. Listening to the convo made me proud to be in community with them and this wasn't just a podcast recording— it was Black Woman power being exemplified. Here are just a few of the questions that I asked them: 1. What will you no longer return to? 2. What will you no longer accept from others? 3. How are you honoring your Blackness from the perspective of self-care? 4. How is pleasure incorporated into your lives? What give you pleasure? 5. What have you learned about love? Marcie Alvis-Walker is a writer and the creator of the blog and Instagram feed, Black Coffee with White Friends and Mockingbird History Lessons. She is passionate about what it means to embrace intersectionality, diversity and inclusion in our daily lives. As a history enthusiast, she believes that learning our comprehensive history from diverse narratives is not only racially healing but also radically anti- racist. She recently moved to Chicago, Illinois with her husband, daughter, and their dog Evie where she reads a lot of books, watches a lot of movies, and drinks a lot of tea and coffee. Lettie Shumate is a historian, educator, and facilitator in Wilmington, NC. She is also the host and owner of her podcast “History Shows Us” where she educates about history and bridges the past to the present, she discusses racial and social issues, and she doesn't hold back the truth. Her gift and ability to “connect the dots” is something that is critical to learning from the past. The love she has for history is evident! Lettie received her M.A. in History in 2015 where she focused on American history and specialized in Black history and race studies. She also completed her M.A. in Conflict Management & Resolution in May 2020 which equipped her with skills to incorporate effective communication with hard topics and how to navigate these situations, mediation and facilitation knowledge, and this MA contributed greatly to her work as both a historian and antiracism educator. Lettie's story and journey is filled with strength and resilience, receiving “noes” and continuing to have faith and be obedient, regardless, and learning what it means to truly choose and cultivate joy while growing and healing. Patricia Taylor is a wife, mom and California native turned Georgia peach. She believes in Jesus, loving all our neighbors, and having critical conversations around racial justice with grace and honesty. Description If you use terminology like “colorblind” to show your racial and cultural compassion and understanding, this episode is tailored for you. Many people outside of the BIPOC communities are lost as it relates to how to communicate and implement a culture of color and cultural caring and sensitivity in such volatile times. This is the wheelhouse of the Be The Bridge training team. This episode’s discussion is centered around cultivating and curating safe spaces for the purpose of building cohesion through anti-racism. Once again the listener is given a glimpse behind the scenes of our training team’s process and execution as well as a look at the results with the organizations we’ve worked with. Often discussions on race in America are limited to a black and white binary. Since the rise of the Covid-19 virus, hate crimes have been on the rise against the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) community. If you truly understand the heart and calling of the Be The Bridge organization then you understand that bridge-building doesn’t stop with two groups. Today’s guest Vivian Mabuni helps us unpack the tensions, opportunities, and solutions for bridge-building, especially as it relates to those in and outside of the AAPI family and or body politic. “...and in the same way, you and I, as women of color, we can't walk away from the conversation, because it is our lived experience day in and day out.” - Vivian Mabuni “ When leaders don't use proper terminology, like COVID, and instead use a term like Chinese virus or Kung Flu, that hurts my community.” -Vivian Mabuni “ I, of course, have felt silenced, you know, all along. And what's interesting is my culture, the foundation of a lot of Asian culture is based in Confucian teaching.” - Vivian Mabuni “ I am so grateful for the leadership of the black community in civil rights that have made way for injustices to be exposed, that Asian Americans AAPI, people can have a different life because we stand on the shoulders of the leadership of the black community.” - Vivian Mabuni LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE Podcast link: https://podlink.to/BeTheBridgeSocial handles/links: Instagram: @LatashaMorrisonTwitter: @LatashaMorrisonFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/LatashaMMorrison/Official Hashtag: #bethebridge --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Part 2 Is Spiritual Warfare Real? Many people stay focused on the warfare portion and don't really get to the root of the issue. The root of the issue is a decision has been made by somebody.
"Mixedish" Episode 204 had me "Living on a Prayer." Rainbow decides to explore the Christian faith and the writers take liberties to explore the skeptic's perspective and those of good faith in the church. It warms our hearts to see Bow love the experience of the church and the Bible so much. In the end, Bow decides she will explore all faiths, being the inclusive, biracial-type A she is. Meanwhile, Alicia finds that she didn’t realize how much she had been missing her childhood church and decides it’s time for her to start attending again. Paul is concerned but still supportive. Harrison is the 'doubting Catholic' who shows he’s more about the culture of Catholicism than he is about the faith and Denise uses the opportunity to show off her fashion sense. If you are seeking some advice on how to navigate race relations and the Christian faith, I would encourage you to explore the Be The Bridge and The Witness - Pass the Mic podcast's and ministries', where leaders, Latasha Morrison and Jemar Tisby, among others, lay down some facts for you all to ponder on and maybe even help restore your faith. In this episode of The Gospel Changes Everything, Alisha dives into a hot topic - racial reconciliation and Biblical justice. Though this may seem like a cultural issue, it's actually a spiritual one The problems in our culture are real. The sin of racism is real. However, the answers are not found in the world's proposed solution of Critical Race Theory (CRT). In this episode, Alisha will define terms and explain the worldview behind this framework. As always, this episode will point back to the truth of the gospel. The key to Biblical unity within the church is not to overturn societal structures, but for the Lord to transform our hearts and minds. Welcome to the GRIT podcast - Getting Real; Immersed in Truth. We're continuing our 5-part series titled Coversations in Black & White. In episode 2, I talk to Tate, Missy's oldest son, about how his relationship with his adopted sister from Africa, led him to become an ally, advocate, and activist for people of color. After show resources: There are groups forming on Social Media and locally that are committed to continuing the conversation on race and racial reconciliation. Participating in one that has people of color in them provides for a well-rounded discussion. I've listed suggested authors to read. Tate recommends anything by the following authors: W.E.B. Dubois The book I'm currently listening to is https://www.amazon.com/Souls-Black-Folk-B-Bois/dp/1505223377/ref=sr_1_2?crid=29QV3J1IYR5SA&dchild=1&keywords=the+soul+of+black+folk&qid=1597153318&sprefix=The+sould%2Caps%2C199&sr=8-2 (The Soul Of Black Folk). Although published in 1903, it is relevant to today's observations on race and American History. I mentioned how this is the first time I haven't been able to publish a podcast episode, as I usually would, every Monday for the past four months. With the recent racial injustices occurring, culminating with the murder of George Floyd, I just couldn't move on with 'life as usual.' I needed to have a conversation. I needed all my brothers and sisters to know that up until this episode, my silence does not mean I agree!I hope you will dive into this conversation I had with Ashleigh Hargrave. In it, she challenges you to look at your own belief system and take on areas that don't measure up by educating yourself to the realities of what black America is facing and how it is not a new problem but one that needs an effective solution. I believe that solution is not one that happens overnight, but is one that starts in our home, at our dinner table, and has it's biggest impact when we, as Mama, set the example. Let's educate ourselves, welcome the hard conversations, and guide our children by emboldening them to stand up for what's right. No matter what your race, this episode is for you. Two sisters with differing backgrounds coming together to implore you to be an advocate for change. To sum it up, all Mamas everywhere, BE THE BRIDGE!*After you've listened to this episode, be sure to check out Ashleigh's podcast - My Big Sister Said - to hear us continue the conversation from a Big Sister point of view.@mbss_apodcast@goodnewsmamaswww.bethebridge.com
This is the first episode of a 2-part series on White Privilege. In this episode, we look at the concept of white privilege. Using resources from Be The Bridge, as well as Peggy McIntosh's “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” we'll explain white privilege — what it really is, who has it, and what we can do with it.
Sam Collier interviews the founder of Be The Bridge, Latasha Morrison! Latasha and her work in racial reconciliation have been featured in FORBES, Christianity Today, Facebook Community Leadership Program and The IF Gathering. www.latashamorrison.com
In this episode Maggie chats with Michael Thornhill, Associate Director of Cross-Cultural Ministry at the Coalition for Christian Outreach, about his work navigating race, class, cultural and generational dynamics.Michael and Maggie talk about Latasha Morrison's Be the Bridge foundation, which empower people and culture towards racial conciliation and unity. Morrison at the IF:Gathering this past weekend mentioned four things that someone can do as they begin to engage in conversations around racial reconciliation: 1. Start with educating yourself. Research and study history, and read. 2. Listening to others, being in proximity to those who are different than you. 3. Lamenting: carrying each others sorrows and burdens4. Leveraging your privilege and using your voice to come alongside. Michael talks about how lamenting helps us as a culture to move forward. Despair is rich with disbelief, but lamenting is rich with belief and hope. We also discuss Black History Month and why Black History needs to be a conversation all year long. Black history is American History, and Black History Month is really meant to highlight Black History but instead it's become the only time of year that it's talked about. We need to talk about both the trauma and the glory. Michael believes that these conversations are not exclusively for people of color but he asks us how can we be inviting white people to engage their own stories. "You have to be curious about your own story, not just about the story of the person of color you know." "Curiosity invites us to ask questions without judgement."Discussion about the Superbowl halftime show, acknowledging outrage as well as the beauty. There was entertainment/performance, cultural expression, political statements... Michael thinks there is a lack of how male culture navigates their own arousal structures.
