Finding the right marketing leadership position is difficult (to say the least). You must have alignment with the CEO and executive team from the get-go. And it's even better when you can follow them from one opportunity to the next. Now in her third opportunity with the same CEO, Helen Baptist from PathFactory discusses not only how to find the right leadership role, but also how to manage that change from within that so often required in a turnaround situation.Whether you're in the process of finding a new marketing leadership opportunity or putting out fires in your current one, Helen offers the following gems in this episode:•Positioning yourself correctly for the opportunity•What to do first in a turnaround situation•Rooting out toxicity• Buyer centricity to break down sales and marketing silosLet me know what you think! It's a pattern we're seeing out there, and some agency friends experience in their careers when they make the mistake of putting themselves in this situation. CEOs at young companies hire a marketing leader, usually a woman with substantial experience, and expect her to singled-handedly transform the fate of the organization. And being the "one woman army" is a really difficult position from which to generate success. In a meaningful discussion of recent experiences she's had as a marketing leader, Jenn Edwards takes us through the highs and lows of being the sole marketing pro at a young company, questions to ask and her point of view on whether or not it's a good idea to even take such a position. If you're thinking about a new CMO / head of marketing job and you think you'll be a OWA or OMA, this is probably a great episode to listen to.Let me know what you think! The old saying goes that men are from Mars, women are from Venus. And while that's not literally true, when it comes to marketing, men and women do seem like two different species. What resonates with a man is wildly different than what resonates with a woman. For instance, I love a good ingredients list and couldn't care less about how much lather I get from my body wash. A lot of men apparently feel the exact opposite. These are the kinds of things that all businesses need to think of when it comes to targeting and sending the right message. And it's a topic I went deep on in the episode of Up Next in Commerce with Matt Mullenax, the Co-Founder and CEO of Huron. Matt talked me through all the ways he had to test, poll, and iterate on his advertising to get his men's body care brand off the ground. But when he found the right formula, all of a sudden it was like striking gold. We're talking crazy click-through rates, plummeting CPAs, and a direct line into the messaging that men are aligned with. Do you want to know what it is? And are you interested in what other heavy lifts Matt is working on now for long-term payoffs? Find out on this episode!Main Takeaways:The Humanization of Brand: People used to be excited by the novelty of buying online. As the DTC world evolved, consumers have gotten smarter and these days, your brand has to resonate in ways beyond just having a good product available. Some of the aspects of humanizing the brand, such as building personal connections, will require a heavy lift upfront, but the long-term value. An Atypical CX Strategy: Historically, CX has been seen as reactive, but there are ways to be proactive and ensure an exceptional customer experience no matter the situation. You should not wait for a problem to arise to help a customer out. If you know there might be a delay in shipping or some other situation arises, by reaching out before the product is delayed, you build trust with your customer.Find Your Internal Cheat Codes: Whether you have a founder with deep connections in manufacturing or you're friends with an Instagram influencer, there are certain elements you bring to that table that you should tap into to give you a leg up in one way or another. For an in-depth look at this episode, check out the full transcript below. Welcome to the afternoon of day 30 of #29DaysofMagic! In today's episode I get to have a fascinating conversation with Andrea Opoku, Director of WiM and Africa Ambassador and managing director of GreenBean Marketing. We talk about her journey, going from marketing place to the next going up the ladder from one company to the next. We talk about how after she was a part of CIM, where WiM began, because of being a bit fed up with the same old type of events around marketing, with white men in formal suits she started working to bring more excitement to these kinds of events. We talk about how Andrea with WiM globally are working with the Unstereotype Alliance to change the narrative around advertising. “Well behaved women rarely make history.” -Eleanor Roosevelt, and Andrea's ask is that you don't play small.
